We enjoyed our stay at this lovely establishment. The staff was very attentive and kind. The restaurant was very good and we appreciate the fact that they source organically and locally. The premises and accommodations themselves were what attracted us in the first place, as you feel you are in a different era, being constructed in a beautiful historical style. Very special vibe! Amazing Building, Fantastic Staff

I had a really great stay here. First, the building is amazing. Staying in a beautiful setting like this really added to my experience in Kathmandu. Second, the staff is great. From thoroughly cleaning my room each day (more than is typical at a hotel) to making sure my bed was heated at night, they were attentive to all my needs. Third, the breakfast buffet was great. They also augmented it with some Nepali cuisine cooked to order. The only negative is that I seemed to have an allergic reaction to something in the room that caused me to sneeze quite a bit.

Kantipur Temple House is a hidden gem in the Thames district of Kathmandu. Painstakingly reproduced Nepalese architecture from a bygone era. Hugely spacious and comfortable rooms. Many small alcoves to enjoy delicious Chai Masala. The food is organic and exquisite. Yoga on the rooftop. The staff goes above and beyond every expectation that I had. Unexpectedly, I met the owner one day at the front door - and we shared stories for nearly an hour. Forget the higher priced places. Kantipur Temple House is far better at half the price. When I return to Kathmandu, the only place I will consider staying is Kantipur Temple House. A big thank you from me to everyone at Kantiour the made my stay so enjoyable

Kantipur Temple House is a great place to base yourselves when exploring Kathmandu. The staff are very accommodating and the rooms are spacious. The city is dusty and noisy but only a little of both finds it’s way into the rooms. Good breakfast and we would commend this hotel for all that they are doing to minimise plastics etc. Hot water bottles in your beds in the evening is a very welcoming start to a good nights sleep.

I’m really in two minds about my recent stay.
Great location and character filled building, great staff, lots of little nice touches.

This hotel is really beautiful. If you’re looking for that perfect Instagram pic you’ll definitely get it here. Great location, helpful staff. However, a few things you need to know. It’s an “eco” hotel- there’s no AC or heat. No TV. And it’s dark. Like, you can’t get ready or see in your room at night. The bulbs in the room were 5 watts- we literally almost went out and bought new light bulbs when we stayed here. It’s just... odd. The bathrooms are also pretty spartan but whatever- you’re in Nepal. Overall a beautiful property but a few small tweaks would really push it over the top and make it fabulous instead of just okay.

Kindness and comfort at Kantipur Temple Hotel

If you are looking for a unique small hotel with a lot of charm, and can live with no pool or cable tv, then Kantipur Temple is well worth a try. I can honestly say that it is one of my favorite boutique hotels anywhere. The architecture is dedicated to preserving the 16th century brick and ornate wood traditional style and the owner/ staff are committed to being organic and green. The garden is lovely and the restaurant is very nice. The location is fabulous because it is just 2 little black class from a main Thamel street but it offers a peaceful setting hidden from the madness:) The WiFi is basically good, the rooms tend to be dark, but that saves electricity. I was a little sick and they had an electric blanket ready for me. Nights can be very cold!! This seems to be a favorite spot for hundreds of European trekkers. Friendly, warm and helpful staff. I was very happy there.huge luxury hotels could learn a lot from Kantipur Temple house.

The place is beautiful, charming and well located, but is really cold and dark, they give you electric blankets and electric heaters or hot water bags that in my case make me feel some ill because that only warm a little area and the rest remains cold very cold. In fact, I had the booked another hotel for the second night (It was already paid) in order to prevent getting more sick before I go trekking,
That and the noise made by the machines they are using in remodelatiions in the front area (I had to asked to be changed to a rooms in the back) made my stay in this hotel not good.Maybe it was just bad luck

We realised that 3 days is simply not long enough to see Kathmandu & must one day return to also go beyond Kathmandu. I loved being close to the tourist shopping area but did not appreciate the environmentally friendly chill of the hotel. They try to compensate with electric blankets, hot water bottles and smelly gas cylinder heaters in the bedrooms but the public areas are still very cold in February.

An oasis of calm in Thamel - a rare find

Kantipur Temple House Hotel was an oasis of calm in the craziness that is Thamel. Beautiful architecture, nicely furnished rooms and very friendly and helpful staff. The hotel has a green ethos and provides clean water without encasing it in plastic, cloth bags for shopping and solar panels provide wonderfully hot water to the showers. Even free yoga each morning in the garden at 8am, perfect for when you’ve just come down from the mountains!!

Great potential but falls short in many ways.

This hotel didn't quite deliver what we had expected, it was an interesting building displaying the local architecture and building skills to their best but the hotel was let down by some very dark rooms with virtually no daylight and poor artificial lighting. Also, the promised toiletries actually comprised 2 small soap bars for our 4 night stay, similarly the hair dryers and ceiling fans didn't exist, contrary to the hotel description. The staff were good, especially the lady on reception and the hotel's airport pick up ($10) was reliable. The included breakfast was OK but unchanging over our time there and not replenished very quickly, if at all, towards the end on the breakfast period.
In conclusion the hotel is well located and its construction interesting but the nightly rate is quite expensive and we felt it didn't really represent good value given the deficiencies described above.

The opposite of a cookie-cutter hotel, Kantipur Temple House offers an authentic Nepalese experience. Beautiful carvings, stonework, flowering gardens abound, and the morning yoga on the lawn was a treat. Great location in Thamel, but on a secluded alleyway. We loved our stay!

A quiet, welcoming inn out of the bustle

On a cold night, the staff had turned on an electric blanket below our bottom sheet, and the bed was toasty and wonderful. Kathmandu was fascinating, but busy, noisy and SO polluted...somehow this inn helped us detox; even the air quality was healing. Good job, Kantipur Temple House.

Kudos also to the hotel for going green and solar without compromising comfort. And the daily yoga class in the garden adds a nice friendly touch. -tiny, dark bathroom with stained tiles and grouting.

Good location in Thamel but out of the main bustle

This is a new hotel designed to look like a very old one. This is a very beautiful hotel in a garden setting, close to the dirt and noise of the main streets in Thamel. So a perfect combination. Everything in the hotel is designed carefully to look traditional and beautiful, including the breakfast settings. But no a/c, no tv, and definitely no plastics. So could be a bit of an adjustment, but in the spirit of the old and sadly mostly lost Kathmandu.

An oasis of calm in chaotic Kathmandu

My second stay in this central hotel did not disappoint. Built in traditional Newari style, there are plenty of architectural features to feast the eyes on including carved wood, a fountain and statues. The quiet courtyard and garden are great for relaxing in while taking a break from browsing the shops in nearby Thamel. Good restaurant with plenty of regional choice (Nepali, Indian, Chinese). The owner is making a huge effort to be eco-friendly in one of the world's most difficult cities in which to be green. Organic vegetables. Home-made apple jam at breakfast. No plastic bags ... you can borrow fabric ones. No individual plastic water bottles are sold here ... but filtered drinking water is provided free every day in the bedrooms and restaurant. My room was spacious and kept very clean. Plenty of hot water for showering. An hour of yoga and meditation offered every morning. Staff attentive, friendly and helpful.

Fabulous location, amazing restaurant

We arrived at the Kantipur Temple after having roughed it for a week, and were greeted by an incredibly warm and professional staff and an architecturally exquisite building and grounds. The rooms vary greatly in size and detail, so ask for one facing the inner courtyard. Fast internet, warm (hot) showers, nightly turn-down service complete with water bottles, electric matress pad covers, and darling brass water pitchers with matching (very local) cups next to the beds. And on top of everything else, the restaurant is spectacular. Seriously, the food is first class. Don't even bother going out to find something \"local\" because the hotel restaurant is 5-star, Newali food at incrediblly low prices. In every aspect, this hotel is an oasis in crazy Kathmandu. It's a gem.

Nice guest house in Thamel district

A very nice guest house in the Thamel district. The neighborhood is quiet and (it seemed to me) very safe. Totally quiet at night, with a sanctuary type of atmosphere due to fact it's walled in with a garden. About a 10-minute walk from all the restaurants and bars in Thamel. And there are plenty of souvenir shops in the immediate vicinity. There's an excellent coffee shop nearby called Java. Best coffee in Katmandu. They roast their own coffee and make great espresso drinks. A good place to sip a latte while planning your day.

The hotel has the feeling of a traditional guest house. The restaurant serves a good variety of dishes and is worth visiting in its own right. They also have a yoga class in the morning. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. I like that they are environmentally conscious and that they try to keep waste to a minimum. I found myself being very careful with water and electricity, because I was aware that these resources aren't things you take for granted in Katmandu. There are scheduled \"brown-outs\" every day (as everywhere in Katmandu), but the hotel has got back-ups so there weren't any significant interruptions to hot water or electricity. I didn't bring any devices so I can't comment on wi-fi, but they let me use the computer in the office to check my email. Overall, the KGH is somewhat modest, not a luxury hotel by any means, but perfectly clean, welcoming, and well situated.

Wonderful Home away from Home!

We have had such a wonderful stay at the hotel! The building itself is a work of art. So much thought was put into the design to really replicate the best of Nepalese architecture and culture. It really pleasantly tricks you into thinking you are in a historic site.
The staf is so helpful and lovely. Quite and unassuming but so incredibly helpful and accommodating.

Beautifully designed and handcrafted hotel set in a quiet garden in the midst of the mayhem of Thamel.
Very attentive staff and management, and spotlessly clean.
Rooms are big and either overlook the garden or the inner courtyard, through finely detailed timber screens.
The beautiful brickwork and timber detailing extends throughout the whole building (not just the foyer) making this one of the most beautiful hotels at which I have stayed.

Beautiful artisan crafted hotel near Thamel

Have stayed at the Kantipur Temple House a couple of times in the last 10 years (most recently last week). (I've also stayed at other hotels in the Valley.) It was built to resemble the historic houses/palaces of Kathmandu, with artisanal crafted touches everywhere, from its stunning courtyard, to wood and stone carvings everywhere (a pair of lions greet you at the entrance), and more. Dwarika's is the only other hotel I can think of like this, and it's 4 times the price, and not 1/2 so convenient location wise. The staff is great, to a person very friendly and helpful, food is also very good. In building the hotel they tried to locally source as much as possible - from all the amazing woodworking and stonework, to the dishware they use, as well as signs, menus, hotel book, etc. which are all made with locally sourced paper. They also try to be environmentally conscious (most hotels pay at least lip service to this). It's a 10-15 minute walk to Durbar Square in Kathmandu, and less to the center of Thamel, yet the hotel itself is a quiet haven, with a beautiful garden, with a fountain (not on during the drought), pond, and grassy lawn where yoga classes are given on demand.

Wonderful Eco Friendly Hotel

We loved our stay. We also loved their policy of no plastic water bottles. There was a big water dispenser that guests could fill our containers from before venturing out.

All the staff was very helpful. Even during the Earthquake they tended to the needs of the guest.

The hotel is centrally located. Within walking distance to a lot of things. Would definitely stay there again if we visit Nepal again.

Earthquake didn't stop them from being gracious

We really enjoyed our stay at the Kantipur Temple Hotel. We were in Nepal when the earthquake struck. The owner Bharat ensured that we were well looked after. Since the hotel sustained some damage due to liability, we could not stay in our rooms. But they provided us with food and bedding and we had to remain in the grounds.

Also a skeleton staff was left to take care of our needs.

Ram the manager's house was damaged but he put our comfort and those of the other guest before his family. Also the Chef's house was completely destroyed, but he stayed to make us tea and a delicious meal of fried rice before apologizing for having to go home and take care of his family.

During the night a Security Guard, a Housekeeping person and two others were left to take care of the few remaining guest and ensure the safety of the Hotel.

Many thanks to the owner Bharat. They gave us free food during this time.

Our prayers and well wishes to the people of Nepal. It was really sad to witness the devastation.

It was very aesthetically pleasing in Kantipur Temple. Absolutely gorgeous. But the road to it is a bit rough (few minutes walk or drive). Also there are no elevators so get a room on the lower floors. And it is fine in the cooler weather but I don't know if they have an AC. Truly beautiful hotel.

Nice and quiet place to stay

This is a great place to stay away from the dust and chaos of Kathmandu. The walled garden is a sanctuary. As with all the other places there are regular power cuts so you have to organise your hot showers for time when the power is on. They provided an electricity schedule for you. It is cold at night but they provide a heater and hot water bottles so it makes it very cosy. There is a back up lighting system run by generator when the power is out. The staff very friend and helpful. They recommended a taxi driver called Ari who lives nearby to tour us about. I would really recommend Ari for his knowledge and language skills - very professional.

Stayed 1 night. It's located in a quiet pocket of Thamel. As the name implies, the hotel looks like temple and have a very Nepalese feel and culture to it. Hotel is huge and has a spacious courtyard. For you luggage haulers, this hotel has no elevators so you'll have to carry many flights of stairs. The room we had was spacious and clean with a large bathtub, and what had us so impressed was their thoughtfulness of providing us a hot water bag in our beds. Front desk staff was ok. Breakfast was not complimentary with your stay nor is shuttle service to airport. Overall nice hotel.

Phenomenal Stay

This was the best hotel in an area full of tourist accommodation. Sure, you could find plenty of $5 beds in Kathmandu, but this hotel was 100% worth the price. It has a full enclosure with a wrap around garden, complete with lawn, fountains and gorgeous stone figures. With the hustle and bustle of Thamel just outside, it's an oasis. The rooms were low key, just as we like it. The beds were soft and the window into the courtyard gave it just enough natural light. My eco-side appreciated the establishment's efforts to conserve energy and resources. My partner and I were so grateful for their \"all-you-can-drink\" mineral water. We were attending a local wedding and the staff was kind enough to assist me with my sari. AND it looks exactly like the true temples you see at Kathmandu Durbar Square! We stayed for a week and I'd recommend this hotel to anyone - hands down.

Like stepping back in time

The hotel is worth staying at just to enjoy the amazing architecture! It felt a bit cold (literally and figuratively) when we first arrived, but was great the next morning in the warm sun. Our Expedia discount room didn't include a TV or breakfast (buffet for $10 or ala cart available), but had a heater (the cheaper hotels in Thamel don't usually include one) and warm water. I think the generator is only a partial backup as we had problems with the wifi when it was working, but there were still a few lights working and hot water. Very close to the main busy spots of Thamel, though I must admit that coming originally from South Africa I felt a bit nervous walking down the smaller backroads to get to the hotel as there was a lot of construction and empty plots along the way…but taxis are easily available if you don't feel comfortable…and there is a security guard on duty outside 24/7.

Except breakfast everything is just 10/10.
Superb staff....especially Mr Ram at the reception.

The passage lane to hotel may not be likable but its the same with almost all lanes in Nepal.
But the moment you enter the hotel rejuvenation of mood will start.

The watchman was also very jolly and always smiling.

Excellent location, good service, comfortable stay

My friend and I stayed for a night at Kantipur and we were quite satisfied with our stay there. The hotel's good location (footsteps away from all the action in Thamel), unique architecture and value for money were the main reasons why we chose the hotel. We were also pleasantly surprised by the rather good food for lunch. Staff were relatively friendly and helpful too. Do note though, that the hotel rooms do not have air con. We had to open our windows to keep the room cool, and would appreciate if the hotel also provides mosquito coils. Overall good experience.

Loved every bit of it. Stay at Kathmandu would have been incomplete without the Kantipur Temple house experience. Personalized services, quite and peaceful environment, temple ambiance made the stay pleasurable.

I should have read the reviews before I booked the rooms...1st - there are no AC, just a fan. 2nd - the location is one block further from main street, and you have to walk in a very messy street... 3rd the brunch in the morning was ridicules - they count every piece you take: how many omelets, how many pieces of chees, bread, juice, coffee... I have never seen that kind of brunch before... So after we have got the checks I understood, why the waiters are looking at your morning table like at the piece of gold - they are counting everything lol!!!! Even in their brochure there is one price for everything.

Oasis in the middle of Jyatha.

Incredible Newari architecture and wood carvings. Room 104 was courtyard-facing and everything in fine working order. Mineral water always available in the brass jugs. Wifi connection excellent wherever you are on hotel grounds. Best part about hotel was the restaurant--super inspired to recreate their shikarni, as well as the fried potatoes and wild boar. Totally recommend. Staff was also quite wonderful and accommodating.

Beautiful hotel in Thamel

The Kantipur Temple house is a lovely hotel. Unfortunately they don't have any double beds in std rooms, so you need to sleep in a twin bed if you get a std room, but the room itself is of no lesser quality than the deluxe rooms having seen both.

They don't run power during the load shedding, so that's something to note, and there is no AC, just fans, though I found it to be fine.

I really like that they don't have bottled water, they provide filtered water in copper vessels or you can fill your own water bottle.

The hotel is clean, the facilities are good, beds are pretty comfortable and the shower is contained.
The food is actually excellent, at least the Nepali and Thai dishes they serve.

Beautiful Hotel

We stayed here twice. Beautiful rooms, we felt we were back in the times of the Rajas or the Arabian Nights. The garden is a welcome refuge of peace after being on the crazy streets of Kathmandu all day. Restaurant was good, especially loved the chicken tikka masala. Friendly and helpful staff. A bit on the expensive side so this is not a backpacker's hotel.

A Newari oasis in the middle of Kathmandu

Although this month of February they were in restoration the place is relaxing and allows to enjoy the style of local architecture. It is located at the edge of Thamel, just two blocks of nice walking and you are in the middle of the area of bars and restaurants. The service is fine and polite, Wi-Fi along all the hotel and a nice terrace that is enlighten with candles every night, We stayed for 4 nights in a Deluxe Room, I guess that the Standard rooms could be good enough, these Deluxe are larger, but the toilets still need some works and improve some amenities on them.

2nd stay at Kantipur

Hotel was great. Service was amazing. The only difference this time was that the shower was luke warm to cold for our 2 night stay. We were told that it was probably related to the location of the room. We stayed at Kantipur before and did not have a problem with hot water. I would still stay at Kantipur again if I am in Kathmandu.

Hotel with lots of character!

Nice hotel in the Thamel area. It is on a small street and a little difficult to find at first. The staff is nice and helpful. The hotel has lots of character with detailing at every corner. The only drawback is that there are scheduled blackouts but we just planned ahead. Showers are hot which is what you want. Turndown service includes electric blankets and hot water bottles. Hotel is a short walk to the tourist bus meeting point to Chitwan or Pokhara.

Best Place in Kathmandu

Loved our stay at the Kantipur Temple House. The service, the location, the cleanliness were all very good. I've stayed elsewhere and this was the best. On top of that they are environmentally aware and provide several options for helping the environment; from not overly washing towels to minimizing water waist.

Dark and Depressing

We chose this place because of the proximity to Thamel and the look of the hotel as it's style was very \"Nepal\". Problems were our room was on the 1st floor so it was very dark the entire day...and we'll as cold. If you do book here demand a high room with lots of sunlight. Not much hot water, it was always cold for us. The lunch and dinner we had wasn't that great. We highly recommend heading to Gioa which is about a 5min walk. Awesome food and drinks and cheap! Overall it was more expensive than others in the area, but you are paying for the architecture of the building...and again, if you stay here, stay on a higher floor otherwise you will be as depressed in your room as we were.

Great Nepali Style Hotel

If you want to get more out of your visit to Kathmandu and avoid the all around the world, plastic look a-likes of the international chain hotels stay here! It is truly Nepali with local Nawari craftsmen carving the many balconies (6 floors worth) facing the inner court yard and front of the hotel. The yard is great for sitting and for having meals. It is not for the comfort needy like my wife who has stayed here even so. There is no elevator (but there are bell men), and the bathrooms are quite small with old fixtures.

The building itself is exotic and lovely. Pick up from airport went well.
But the lack of basic conveniences takes away the charm.In the name of eco friendliness there's no airconditioning, theres a standing fan instead. As such the room is stuffy and we sometimes left the door open for air movement. When we removed the quilts and folded them away since the room was not cool, each day we would return to find the quilts piled on again.
Your daily water supply is a brass jug of water. The brass tumbler had rust inside. Since you cant bring the brass jug out, the hotel loans water bottles for guests to bring along when u go out. However, I dislike the idea of using a bottle used by dozens of strangers.
The reception staff are indifferent. Altogether not a very pleasant experience. Price wise there are cheaper and better places. When we went to Ambassador Garden Home it was a much better.

Hidden paradise in Kathmandu

The hotel is AMAZING. It has beautiful rooms, beautiful decoration. The patio's amazing and it's really peaceful. The staff is always good to you, they are so friendly and gentle. The food is also really good! I will definitely recommend this hotel for many reasons!
