Manager is amazing!!! Indeed he’s undoubtedly the best thing about the hotel and it was lovely to meet him. He worked tirelessly to ensure everyone had everything they needed from reception to bar to maintenance! Great sense of humor, a real asset! However the hotel itself is in dire need of updating!
The food was good and the atmosphere lovely. But the shower was very frugal with the water, the bathroom tiny and the room compact. It just needs a bit of tlc and money spent on it to turn it into a true gem.

Dated decor. No plug for sink! No radiator control as TRV broken off some time ago as the dust shows. So the room was cold as the stop valve was screwed shut. TV doesn’t work. No water pressure to shower though sink was fine at taps. Poor quality mattress.

Amazing location, unbeatable loch views. Onky downside we had was promised breakfast in bar so we could have dog with us, this wasnt set up. When i approaches staff they said they would get this sorted asap but forgot about us. We ended up putting dog in car and having breakfast in main dinning room, but by this point bread, juice and cereal was limited. Felt this put a but of a dampner on the stay. Perhaps two servers on at breakfast woukd have been helpful.

A wonderful time!

My friend and I stayed at Loch Maree Hotel for a night before we went over to the Isle of Skye and our experience was amazing! Duncan was so sweet and funny and made the stay memorable. The views of the lake are beautiful and everyone else staying at the hotel were friendly and loved to chat. The food was delicious, we had dinner and breakfast - both great. I wish we could have stayed longer! Next time I'll have to bring a boat that's not filled with water to explore the lake.

A great place to escape a storm

It was a last minute booking for us to escape storm Floris and we're so pleased we found this place. Wonderful views from the room and fantastic food. We had haggis to start (which wasn't on the menu but they did it for us anyway) and Sea Bass and Lamb Shank which were both excellent.

A beautiful hotel with grand high ceilings and an eccentric historical townhouse charm. Perfectly located right on the shore of Loch Maree, with private lake access. Our room was peaceful and quiet, offering breathtaking views of the lake. The host was exceptionally friendly, warm and accommodating, adding a welcoming atmosphere to both the hotel and its cosy bar. He went out of his way to meet our requests, making us feel truly cared for. Easily our best experience on the NC500.

It was way overpriced, everything felt & appeared run down. On entering the room the bed appeared unmade, the towels were worn out and ripped as soon as used. There was a strong smell of cigarettes through the evening coming in the room. We left the room at 6.30am the next morning because we just had to get out.
One positive which didn't make up for the negatives was the view of the Loch from the room - through filthy windows !

Worth it for the views

Loch Maree was a fabulous location. Staff were helpful breakfast was good. Dining room had limited space. Views were amazing. This hotel needed a few more staff and some updating. It was though quite remote and this would be a challenge. In all though nice place to stay.

Fabulous, historic, and beautiful hotel!

The hotel had such charm and I am amazed with the three staff members we chatted with that was keeping up the whole place. This hotel cannot be compared to modern hotels these days; and I wouldn't want to. The Lock Maree has a bar and restaurant on site; which I would highly recommend having dinner and breakfast. The staff was so nice and helpful. We walked the grounds in the afternoon and had such a lovely, quiet, peaceful time at the hotel. Highly recommend and I can't say much more about this place except you have to stay a night or two at least.

The welcome was fantastic

We have travelled and stayed in too many hotels to count. There have so far been 2 that have stood out in our minds as giving excellent service. The Loch Maree has jumped to number one. Duncan who welcomed us, was fantastic. He surpassed any previous number ones! He could not do enough to help and make sure that we were comfortable and had all that we needed. When the Callan, came back from his holiday, he again was lovely, helpful and kind, but Duncan had already taken the top spot. The food was very good. We noticed that some people complained about the lack of choice. It is the end of the season and hotels are closing down, so naturally the choice will be a bit less. Each night there was a couple of different choices, from the night before. Had absolutely no complaint about the food, presentation and flavours.

Very old, dated hotel. WAY overpriced. Cold, terrible water pressure and temperature. Room was TINY, bed saggy, pillows hard as a rock. Food was bland and uninteresting. Unfortunately for us the hotel is under recently appointed new management and there is a lot to work on in terms of general hospitality skills and in particular the dining experience . Dinner menu very limited - appear to be aiming for fine dining but i would argue that most NC500 travellers are not looking for this. Service was very slow to the point of embarassing. Breakfast menu was better but cooked food for 1 of us was cold and therefore not eaten .

Excellent attentive and helpful staff, breakfast was high quality and with plenty of choice. The location on the side of the loch with some incredible views was fantastic. However the hotel has some issues, namely limited or no water pressure. This is recognised by the hotel but does mean that showers are a dribble and don’t bother trying to run a bath. We had a great experience Sea Kayaking but got back to the hotel wet and cold unable to shower properly. We stayed in room 6 and the bathroom is in dire need of an upgrade with the floor Lino lifting in places, the radiator thermostat trapped against the wall and a glass shelf missing above the sink. The old thermostat on the radiator in the bedroom was not attached properly and fell off when adjusted. Both rooms were very clean. The other issue for us was dinner. We were not expecting or informed about the menu until we sat down late evening. Very expensive and limited choice. Fine Dining. It was high quality, well presented but not really for us.

Brown water!!

The best part of this hotel was the view over the Loch
The hotel seemed to be run by only two people one was the chef and the other man was in charge of the reception, bar and served dinner and for all I know probably cleaned the rooms.! he was however very friendly and helpful.
The problems I found with this hotel were that the room was expensive for what you got,I guess you pay extra for the view and also £6 for a bottle of beer is excessive.
One of our main complaints was that the water coming out of the taps was brown and on querying it with the man of many jobs we were told that it came from the Loch and went through filters and was safe for us.Needless to say we did not wash that night. For these reasons I would not recommend using this hotel

We were in a top floor room, basically the attic, on a hot day and warm evening. No fans. No airconditioning. It was very uncomfortable. Halfway through the night we found the bathroom heater on, with no way to turn it off, which had made matters worse. We opened the window to let in some cooler air - a blowfly flew in and buzzed around in the night (no fly screens, no fly spray). The bed creaked, which woke me when I turned over - I ended up putting the mattress on the floor. So I had a pretty poor night's sleep.
The 'shower' was woeful - very little pressure and what looked like tiny shavings of metal (?) came out. I ended up part filling the bath and kneeling to get a full wash.
The hotel says Queen Victoria slept there - what may have been ok in her day is not ok now.
On the plus side, hotel management was polite and welcoming. The evening meal was good, if a little expensive (over 50 pounds for two pastas, one glass of wine and a smoked salmon starter). And the location is excellent. But I would not stay there again.

Having traveled around England and Scotland, we found the staff to be friendly and willing to answer questions with patience and a friendly smil for a foreigner. Not so here.

The bathroom was not very nice. With a tub, handheld shower and a note to only use shower for hair washing. My husband cannot sit in a tub, so that meant no washing for him. The hose and shower head did not look very clean, so none for me either.

The toilet handle was ready to fall off and wouldn’t stop running when flushed. My husband did get it to shut off.

The breakfast was included, but had very little. So different than other places.

So far in our trip, this is the worst place we stayed.
Very disappointed.

On the NC500 which probably keeps it going.

I didn’t find the owners to be very friendly. They had rules & an unusual way of running the hotel. The dining room was locked when not serving and it was the only room with a view of the loch ( unless you had a room with a view). No shower, only a bath. Limited WiFi but that was ok’ish. Food was limited & average. The breakfast was just ok. No choice of egg, fried and oily.

Great place--only wish I stayed longer

This is place is a gem in a rather remote area. It's right on the lake, so, depending on the room, you can have a tremendous view right out of your window. It's well-located to nature and the best hiking in Scotland. The married couple that runs the place is very helpful and makes a very tasty breakfast. The hotel is a bit dated, especially in the bathroom, but that's also part of its charm--it's an old-timey hotel in a very scenic area.

The hotel is in a wondeful location, overlooking the water, but thats where its stops. The whole hotel is very dated and needs alot of love to utilse its unique location.
Our room was ok, bathroom was terrible, acturally looked unfinished with parts falling apart and we had no shower. The dining room tables were sticky. The breakfast food is edible, where as the evening food is very poor, with the prices of the main meals one would expect a better quality of meal.

Good sized room overlooking the loch. Nice decor. Dining room overlooks the loch but needs something to create atmosphere e.g. candle and/or plant on the table. Otherwise seems quite plain. Staff very friendly.
Wi-fi is only available in the downstairs common areas but not in bedrooms which is a negative. I had to stand on the landing to get a signal. Bathroom would benefit from a shower curtain.

2 night stay

Fabulous location and hotel spotless & beautifully decorated. The big downside was that we had to eat between 6 and 7 in the evening which is very early if out and about during the day. Also there was little to do afterwards (no games/cards). Drinks were available in reception but bar was closed. This all seemed to be due to Covid precautions so hopefully different when back to normal.

Pleasant Hotel with plenty of character!

Friendly owners running a very pleasant Hotel filled with lots of character. We had a very tasty freshly made evening meal but you do need to pre order on arrival to eat between 6-7 but no big deal for us. Great breakfast in the morning and easy check out. Off road parking excellent.

Honestly, do not book this place!

Unclean, really unclean! In this Covid era, it makes you worry, what has been cleaned - am I safe here? Slept so badly as a result!
Pubic hair on the floor of bathroom and smears on all the tiles... gross!

Not as described at all...

There was no shower in the ensuite (only a bath with a hand held shower) which you were told was only for hair washing, so no shower curtain provided - if you did want to risk it, you couldn't get hot and cold water mixed, so could choose only hot or cold water. Water not available at certain times, if everyone used the water.

WIFI available in downstairs area only (not in the room) the communal areas were really uncomfortable and not somewhere I would spend time, so just read my book in the dirty room.

Staff attitude is focused on their needs, not yours - if you want dinner, you have to choose and pre order (I had not seen a menu) and it is only served between 6-7pm. We checked in at 5.55pm. Breakfast has to be pre- ordered, everything has to be settled by 10pm. This is fine for smaller establishments, but you really felt like a cash cow - there to deliver only one thing, rent!

Honestly avoid!

I will be asking for a refund for my £125!

Overnight stay as part of our cycle ride

Our stay was just what was needed as part of our Scotland 500 cycle ride. Nice evening meal and a good breakfast, just the fuel needed for our cycle. Room was comfortable and staff friendly. The Hotel is a grand old building which always comes with its quirks but that is part of the charm.

Fantastic

Great views over loch maree, and easy access to the loch for some paddle boarding (if you’ve got your own equipment)

Room was nice and had everything needed. Don’t expect amazing plumbing in this part of the world though

Old fashioned but friendly

Pros:

- The setting is stunning, right on the banks of the loch.
- The staff were very friendly and helpful especially the waiting staff.
- The food was very tasty.

Cons:

- No wi-fi in the rooms, it's 2021 so you'd think this would be fairly standard
- The decor is old and tired
- The shower randomly jumps from blistering hot to ice cold

Overall it's decent enough, but would be amazing with a bit of a touch up.

NC500, last b&b, arrived at 5:45pm lady made us eat at 6pm(no other restaurants for miles) and order our breakfast! Wifi in public areas only. No shower. Flickering room lights. Land lady was miserable but the Mr was 👌. Food was okish… would not recommend this place… just drive to Inverness!

Outstanding Location

The stunning location and character of the hotel lift the rating. The current guest experience is definitely not maximised. Our room was quite basic (room 1) but cosy. It has a comfortable bed but being the only room above the kitchen extractor fan probably makes it the noisiest. If you can deal with the distraction, the view is second to none.
Would recommend as an overnight stop on the NC500, just to take in this amazing Highland location.

a few days in the west of Scotland at Beinn Eighe

Great view of the Loch and Mountains from the room, but there are front rooms as well that will not have the view. Room was comfortable and relatively modern in style. The whole hotel appeared to have relatively new double glazing installed. We enjoyed the four days, but day time was spent mostly out and about. Internet only in public areas, and TV was a but snowy, but you are in the middle of the Mountains on all sides, and if TV is what you want, then do not go! It is the last thing you need with light until 11pm. Queen Victoria stayed here a few years ago :)

We stayed June/July 2021 and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Loch Maree. Luckily we didn't see the negative reviews until we were on our way to the hotel, otherwise, we may not have booked a stay.

When we arrived we received a nice welcome from the owner, and to our surprise, an upgrade to a double bed, as one of the rooms had just come available. (Originally booked 2 twin beds)

The room was gorgeous and overlooking the loch.

The setting of this hotel is perfect if you want to completely switch off, we enjoyed having a morning coffee and an evening whisky on the seats in front of the loch.

Positives
Location - Breathtaking views
Food - Breakfast and dinner was nice
Room - A really good size

Negatives/Improvements
- Wifi - It is only available in the reception or bar area
- Check-in ends at 6 - Considering you are travelling around the highlands, ending your day at 6 pm seems a waste. If you miss 6 pm, then you may miss dinner, as you have to order before 6 pm

If we were to return to the area, then we would definitely look to stay again, I imagine it will be an even better stay if there are more staff and the bar is open

I booked this hotel because of its location (room booked was ‘Loch view’) and it’s gothic look. The whole place feels rather tired and in need of some rejuvenation and as a result didn’t feel like value for money. Our room at the top of the building had a huge bathroom most of which was unused. The space would have easily accommodated a shower (water saving) as an alternative to the bath which took 20 minutes to half fill with water that was then brown in colour. The breakfast was plentiful and well cooked and the dining room well appointed with lovely views over the Loch. The 2 owners seemed to be the only staff and as a result came across as a little harried. Drinks bills had to be settled at the time of purchase and room bills the day before leaving which all meant that it wasnt as relaxing a stay as I had hoped. The hotel is in a good location and could offer a great highland experience but i feel new investment and fresh ideas would be needed to do this.

Nice.

The hotel itself was nice enough, a little dated but ok. The hotel has like many places been closed for most of the past year and is obviously trying to recoup some money but I felt that the room rate was far too high, giving that my room did not have a shower, internet, or a working tv. Food was very good though.Friendly owners.

Need more interaction

It was ok but found no interaction with guests. After a long day travelling we were not greeted with a warm welcome if you said 'welcome and hope you enjoy your stay' it was more 'choose your evening meal then choose your breakfast and time'. Then can you pay as we are short-staffed. Not even a good morning at breakfast as the lady was speaking to someone else so she pointed to our seat. Just put plates in front of us and never asked if we wanted more eg coffee. What are your plans today? We just left the hotel without seeing them. I would have been interested in the history, the photos on the wall, the deer in the garden and the water from the hills. A little bit of friendliness would be good. This was our 5th hotel in 5 days so interesting how first impressions count. We had a problem with our light which was promptly attended to.

Had a 4 night stay, in July, ended up being a great choice.

The owners Raymond & Caroline are really friendly. Their staff are great too, especially Ruth, who was friendly and approachable (which helped as she was at the bar).

Rooms are more than adequate, and comfortable enough. I did have a bit of a struggle finding my room at first, but got there in the end :).

The meals are what makes this place stand out. The food, which was cooked by Raymond and his grandson Jack, was amazing! Have to say, Jack's Haggis was a clear winner, sorry Raymond :).

There is only one downside. Those darn midges out the back! It is next to a Loch though! Actually wasn't too bad, but I did have a repellent. Sitting outside with a pint, and the view you get, cant complain.

If up that way again, I will definitely consider staying here. I would highly recommend it.

I know it's the Highlands before anyone bangs on about that, but it's 2019 and people in Iraq can get decent WiFi so a hotel in Scotland should be able to, and theirs is absolutely terrible. Only works slowly in the bar itself. It's it a ploy to stop people going to their room to use it and not buying drinks? Please don't blame mountains because I think, I THINK, Switzerland has bigger ones and still had WiFi. Also 'evening' meal from 18.00 - 19.15! Get a grip! Who eats that early? Not many apparently and the atmosphere therefore was dead! I felt like I was in The Shining. Could be sooo much better!

Service is awful, not accommodating or friendly. Seemed annoyed to have to be “dealing” with us. They tout their Wi-Fi but it’s questionable at best. Rooms are archaic and outdated - no curtain for the shower, and a TV with 2-3 channels only. Unable to deadbolt doors which was concerning. Only picked this place because it was available for online booking, but would recommend others find a BnB on Skye.

Great view but outdated rooms

At a first glance this hotel should be amazing. Great back yard overlooking the loch with a deer or two wandering around. Yet besides that view the rooms are quite old. The shower didn't drain well and the general feeling was that it was just not clean enough.
Besides that everyone who considers this hotel should know the WiFi there usually not working, so don't count on it.
Conclusion, for one night it was bearable for more find elsewhere.
