Beautiful hotel in beautiful grounds. Bedroom was large and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious and served in the garden which was a real treat. The pool area is very well situated in the garden with plenty of recliners and gazebos. The hotel is situated across from the sea front and the hotel has its own private beach for which you have to pay extra (50 euros a day for 2 recliners and an umbrella, a bit steep in my opinion). The Main Street of Sestri L is just behind the hotel and has a great choice of bars and restaurants. I would highly recommend this hotel and am sure we will be back in the future

Really enjoyed our stay. The hotel was in a great central location and only minutes to the Bay of Silence and all the local restaurants. The room was comfortable, quite basic but had all we needed really. The shower was good and we had nice towels. We are used to staying in more modern hotels but this was more than adequate and made a nice change. The building is very beautiful. The breakfast was fairly simple but nice. We used the pool and that was lovely. The reception staff were helpful and friendly. The overall price was good compared to other hotels in the area. We would return if we visited Sestri again.

Stayed for 3 nights of which 2 days the hotel did not have WiFi service for some technical reasons. This caused multiple problems with some work I had to do. Air conditioner did not work well in our room. First 2 nights did not operate. Very sticky sleep. Last night, suddenly it began working. Considering we were in a suite and the historical prestige of the property, overall, this was a major disappointment. This was our second stay in this hotel and certainly the last!

The hotel is one of the classic hotels in all of Italy. It combines old-world beauty and history with charm and a true art of service. The building is old and the air condition did not work well in all 3 rooms we reserved. We had to change to smaller rooms where the air condition can work.
However the hotel was very convenient to everything and was very nice. I would have a second thought of returning because of air condition.
We also had door lock problem twice

Very nice property! The person at the front desk was professional and truly caring. Breakfast was great and there is even a reduced rate at the beach across the street for hotel guests!
Room was nice, bed comfortable, the only annoying thing is that although the bathroom tissue holder is lovely to look at, the paper falls off each time you use it! A great stay overall!

Great if you like history and good service

Very good hotel. 300 years old Villa (Big estate building) that was turned into a hotel in 1947. Tall curved ceilings with arches in the lobby and lots of antiques around the common areas. Service was exellent. Restaurant staff were very service minded and remembered the personal preferences for coffee etc. for the next day. Very good quality breakfast buffet. Was upgraded to a very big 40 m2 room from the standard room I booked. Great central location next to the walking street and just across from the beach....parking at the back of the hotel.

Sestri Levante proved to be a lovely base for our nine night holiday. Centrally located for short train journeys to Santa Margherita Ligure and Camogli, bus trip to Vasari Ligure and boat trip to Quinque Terre. The station is a ten minute stroll away.
There are two bays - the Bay of Silence has free access to the beach and the Bay of Fables has free access but has many typically Italian sections where you have to pay. The hotel has a lovely pool - but be aware of the occasional mosquito.

This hotel is centrally located to all amenities, including an extremely large choice of restaurants and cheap eateries. There are Michelin Star hotels here offering great food and wine lists at prices that are imminently affordable. The Esplanade provides an easy daily walk. Staff all very helpful and breakfast was always a great pleasure to enjoy under the supervision of headwaiter Francesco.

Old Italian Charm

We love staying in these 'Grand Hotels' when in Italy where you can feel the old world charm of days gone by. The Villa is set in a beautiful garden and the main building which we were put in feels more like a palazzo. All the staff were super helpful and we felt very much at home. We would particularly like to mention the head waiter Francesco who made sure we were taken care of.

What a fabulous Italian Renaissance hotel. I adore the old style Italian decor and settings. It takes you back to another place in time.. awesome! Rooms are clean with crisp white sheets - beds very comfy and inviting. Missed the coffee making Facilities in our room! Breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice and delightful views of the garden. Reception staff was exceptionally helpful with trains /Resturant's etc...Great area for trains to Cinque Terre!

Super hotel - surroundings excellent. Stunning hotel building and great faciliities - e,g. pool area. Staff were helpful and courteous. We were given upgrade to a junior suite which was great.
Suggested improvements is that it was disappointing that a 4* hotel I would have expected to have coffee/tea facilities in the room + free drinking water (there was a fridge however all drinks were chargeable.)

Villa Balbi.

Villa Balbi is ideally located on the sea front in the small but lively town of Sestri Levante on the Ligurian coast of Italy. It is very convenient for travelling to the Cinque Terre, Portofino, Camogli and other beautiful Italian villages.The villa retains much of its original art and decor. Our room was very large, clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated. The staff at reception were very welcoming, friendly and extremely helpful. Breakfast in the restaurant was very good.

Beautiful hotel but looking a little tired

The last time I stayed at the Villa Balbi was 10 years ago and nothing had changed. Although the foyer is as beautiful as ever but the rest of the hotel was looking a little tired. The room was very small but perfectly fine in every other way and the bathroom was very clean and functional.
The location, across the road from the beach, is excellent and the garden and pool are a great option if you don't like the beach. It may have been nice to have some waiter service at the pool and when we did order drinks at the bar and ask for them to be brought to the pool with some snacks, we were only brought a bowl of stale crisps - I don't think that was up to the standard of the rest of the hotel service.
I was most disappointed when breakfast could not be served outside in the gardens due to the weather because this had been one of my best memories from my previous stay. The food at breakfast was plentiful, a good selection and laid out beautifully.

The staff at this hotel was INCREDIBLE, very sweet while checking in two very tired travelers. They were accommodating and kind throughout our stay. Our room was clean and comfortable... the air conditioning was exceptional! The hotel location was great, just a short walk from the train station. I wasn't a huge fan of the breakfast options, but the service was again fabulous.

not worth the money

The hotel is beautiful but we booked a room for 3 people and the beds, especially the extra bed, were not comfortable at all. In addition, although we had a beautiful view, it was impossible to leave windows open at night due to mosquitoes. We had to complain various times to have AC because it cannot be accessed from each individual room. It has to be given by the hotel on a piecemeal basis. The staff was wonderful - friendly, knowledgeable. We were allowed to stay pool side and given towels even after we checked out.

Everything at this hotels is very well done. The rooms are large with all the modern appointments. The staff is friendly, the rooms are clean, the location is great for access to the crescent beach of sestri levante or the broad beach that it sits in front of. Its not too far from the train station if you need to walk from there. They have a great breakfast as well. The villa does have some really nice areas in it.

This was a great hotel in a perfect location. The rooms were comfortable and, apart from one day, kept clean. Reception staff were courteous and helpful - always with a smile on their faces. Breakfast was good, but the service in the restaurant in the morning was poor and the attitude of the waiters was surly and abrupt. In addition the breakfast items were often not replenished. This was a shame as it let down the overall satisfaction in the hotel. Overall I would recommend people stay at this hotel - the breakfast issue is not as important as the comfort and location.

The Grand Hotel Villa Balbi is a converted 16th century Villa - very ornate and beautiful.All of the staff werer very friendly with a Bonjourno each time you passed them in the passage.The front desk staff were fluent in English and most helpful with sight seeing and restaurant suggestions.The breakfast was excellent - great selection and the tables of food were kept filled right up to 'closing time' The pool area was beautiful and well maintained - the only downside was the mosquitoes which were a nuisance - no fault of the hotel.The private beach was also well maintained and easy to access.

Enkel innsjekking, svært hyggelig personale. Eldre hotell og rom, men godt vedlikeholdt og rent. Svært harde ekstrasenger (vi hadde junior suite for 4 personer). Nydelig god frokost, flott hotellhage med sittegrupper og basseng (kaldt vann!). Tilhørende strand var også veldig bra. Merk at hotellet tar 5 euro per håndkle og 50 euro per parasoll med to solsenger i leie per dag. Svært sentral beliggenhet, Sestri Levante er et nydelig sted!

Magiskt ställe!

Fantastisk ställe som jag varmt kan rekommendera, rum, säng, läge, frukost allt i toppklass! Stranden mitt över gatan, pool på området och all service man kan tänka.
Helt klart 5/5 och en guldstjärna! Prova även ! den lilla stranden i bukten med resturanger så mysig ca 6-7 min attgå till.
