Stunning old hotel recently been refurbished. The best feature of this hotel are the staff, bar staff helpful. Breakfast staff are helpful caring and attentive. Big shout to the domestic staff so friendly, helpful definitely got to know rm21 loved oat cookies and shortbread.

We stayed four nights in February and paid a bit extra for one of the rooms at the front - and did not regret it. The only snag was the room was on the third floor and there is no lift; however, the ever-helpful staff were there to assist with the luggage. The 400 year-old character staircase and extensive gallery made the exertion worthwhile!
The room was beautifully equipped and decorated with a huge bed and comfortable chairs and settee and a window where you could enjoy the ever-changing view. It was wet and cold outside but the room was always cosy and the only problem we had was the mystifying modern heating control on the en-suite radiator!
We ate in the first floor restaurant which enjoyed views across the Dart and had a wide choice for breakfast and evening meals. Here the staff were welcoming, attentive and engaging, as were the house-keepers and reception. In fact it was the staff which made our stay such a pleasure.

Wonderful character hotel on waterfront with amazing history. Rooms well furnished and extremely comfortable beds. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the kitchen provided an excellent vegan breakfast as well. Only drawback is lack of dedicated parking which was fine in the off-season (winter) but would definitely become a challenge when the town is busy in summer.

The hotel was very nice,decorated well. The staff,especially Lena,were very helpful.
The downside was our room,we knew it would be small but it faced into the inside of the building and had no openable window.It was very warm in there and felt claustrophobic.Not even a glimpse of the outside world.

This is a very tired hotel in urgent need of a major refurbishment and staffing levels seem inadequate resulting in delays, breakfast can take up to an hour to complete In our 4 night stay our bedding was not changed and our room was dusty and at the top of 7 flights of stairs overlooking a shabby fire escape with a tangled hosepipe left there to trip us up if we needed to escape that way

Great location and convenient. Parking is difficult. Room was clean and tidy. Bed comfortable. No net curtain so either on display or closed blackout curtain. Couldn’t have window open as it was very noisy (boiler, air con or extraction system) and air con was noisy too, so not good for a relaxing lay in! Bathroom needed decent repairs/silicone and some bleach around the taps! Breakfast coffee weak. It wasn’t worth the money.

This hotel is located in an ideal location in the centre of Dartmouth. The staff were particularly helpful and pleasant. The room was a bit dated and tired but clean, the only window was looking inward over the internal courtyard and it did get a bit stuffy late at night but aircon is available. The breakfast was good and the restaurant has a nice view overlooking the harbour. No parking but the park and ride drops you 100m from the hotel so not a problem.

A wonderful find.

We had an amazing stay, the location is perfect, the building has a deep history and unique and authentic style, the room was comfortable, clean and well appointed, the breakfast was freshly cooked with an excellent choice and the staff were friendly, attentive and we're always happy to help. The whole place has a really wonderful feel in all areas. We would happily stay again and would highly recommend it in all areas.

Great location, chacterful old building, with excellent service. However, we stayed in a family room which was a bit shabby and needed an update. e.g the toilet roll holder was hanging off the wall, the door lock was temperamental, and the single bed was rickety. We enjoyed our overnight stay but wouldn't have wanted to stay longer.

Great for getting to be train and ferry. Ideally located with great views overlooking the harbour. Breakfast was excellent although we didn’t experience other dining options. Staff were very friendly and the property was historical and full of charm. Would thoroughly recommend a stay but as far as we are concerned it would preferably be in an external room.

Weekend away!

We really enjoyed our stay for my partners birthday. Location of the hotel was fantastic and close to local amenities. Staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. The breakfasts were delicious with lots of choice from a full english, eggs benedict, fresh fruit, cereals etc, all good quality. The room was tidy and clean, some areas were worn but that’s expected. We stayed in room 29, only criticism is the room could have been organised differently but other than that it was lovely. We loved the character of the building, and I can imagine in the summer it would be gorgeous. We will definitely come back again!

Overall our stay was very pleasant, staff were very friendly and our room was comfortable. On the 3 nights we stayed, we found the breakfast to be unacceptable. On the first morning, some of the items were cold, ie beans and mushrooms. On the second morning we did change our choice and mentioned to the lovely lady that if possible can our food be hot, it was warn. On our final morning, we waited 1 hour for our food be served, now you would expect after this period of time it would be piping hot, how disappointed we were to find it cold again and my order was incorrect which left my husband eating his meal while I waited for my gluten free option to arrive.

We had a great time in Dartmouth and our stay in this hotel.
Our room was a generous size and the staff were superb, very friendly and helpful.
The breakfast choice was outstanding and delicious.
The hotel is right in the centre which is great for walking around the town, but make sure you arrange parking before you leave as it’s difficult to park close to the hotel

We had a really nice stay, the breakfast was good and the hotel is nice and quirky. The room didn't look like its had been vacuumed, there was a hare clip in the middle of the floor.
The location is perfect for Dartmouth's attractions.
Beware that the hotel doesn't have any parking and there are no long stay car parks in Dartmouth.

Lovely place, but attic room needs attention

Everything was fantastic...except our room was attic room with an air conditioner that did not work. It has been broken for some time as there is a laminated sign advising not to use. We also had the seagulls right outside the window, squawking.
I think management should rectify these two issue, first fix the air conditioner and second put some netting up over the chimney stacks so the birds can't perch up there.
It's a poor decision from management to be booking out this room until these issues are resolved.
Otherwise, it's a wonderful place to stay.

High expectations but in some areas not reached.

We enjoyed our stay but didn't like number's of dogs allowed to enter the eating area. It is rather disconcerting to have a large dog drooling over every mouthful you take. Also stock levels of several non alcohol were very poor. It is no use being told the delivery is next Monday I would like my drink now.

Hadn't stayed here for nigh on 40 years. The welcome was spot-on, check in was friendly and very efficient and the room was clean and impressive. I was in one of the refurbished rooms and there were some nice touches, but the shower is very small, even if i am a 6 foot 6 bloke. It was a shame the restaurant was full so i didn't sample dinner, but the breakfast was gorgeous and again, the service there and on check-out, was superb.

The place to stay in Dartmouth

Returning to Dartmouth after living here for a long time, the Royal Castle didn't disappoint. Superbly located in the middle of town, the stay was fantastic from start to finish. The staff were so friendly and helpful, finding us tables to sit at, carrying our bags up multiple staircases, helping us with enquiries all the staff went above and beyond. Breakfast was delicious, smoked salmon especially! The bar downstairs had a super atmosphere and the food was delicious and the wines, though a little pricey were superb! The bedrooms were super comfortable and a great size! Couldn't fault anything, we will be certainly coming back soon!

I've stayed at this hotel many times over the past decade, as I have a boat in one of the local marinas.

It has a great location and was traditionally the social hub of the town. Like most hospitality businesses it struggled to adapt to COVID and seems to be really suffering staff shortages.

Whilst I'm sympathetic to these challenges - not being able to offer a cooked breakfast and having room cleaning only on request is not really acceptable for a hotel of this quality. Traditionally the service in this hotel was 'quirky' -as the owner was a bit 'Marmite' - however, one always felt that there was someone in control and real ownership of any issues. I got the sense that the team in place from St.Austell Breweries (who took the hotel over a couple of years ago) are just 'doing a job'. And not a particularly good one.

Wonderful hotel very helpful staff. Would thoroughly recommend but can I suggest that you don't use a discount code as it seems that their computer systems don't match up with Hotels' ones. Booked a 2nd or 3rd floor room with a 10% discount. When I got there the invoice was about 10% less than I had paid and my room had effectively been downgraded. Staff were wonderful and the situation addressed but check before you go. Everything else was lovely

My husband and I stayed at the lovely Castle hotel for 1 night . We were overjoyed with the room upgrade and the fact that we could check in early. The hotel is obviously 100’s of years old so you should expect a few creaky floorboards etc BUT this simply adds to the charm. It is a unique and romantic place to stay that is very clean and has been decorated to reflect the era of the hotel. The view from our room over the marina was beautiful. The downstairs pub is very cosy and perfect for a winters day drink or meal and you can even help yourself to board games. We thoroughly enjoyed our cooked breakfast which was delicious and cooked beautifully. Thank you so much to the hotel for a lovely stay - Dartmouth is beautiful and quaint.

First-time stay in this hotel and it exceeded all expectations. Staff were friendly, approachable and happy to help. Our room was clean, bright and beautifully decorated. The bed was huge and comfortable. Bathroom had a shower and a bath so we were spoilt for choice. Breakfast was top-class. Excellent produce used and cooked very well. We ate in the restaurant for an evening meal and it was excellent. Great choice of menu to suit everyone and the standard was very high. The hotel is very old and the floors are out of level because of its age. This adds to the charm and we loved the feel of the place. We had an attic room and it’s worth noting the four flights of stairs and no lift. There are no ground floor bedrooms. Any accessibility issues and this is not the hotel for you. The restaurant is on the first floor too. This didn’t affect us and we had a wonderful stay. Will definitely stay again.

Great check in and although on the top floor with no lift it was worth the climb. Puffed out we were greeted with a huge bedroom which was spotless and well equipped. I cant remember the last time I observed such happy staff in all areas of the hotel
The breakfast overlooking the town and river was top notch. The bar was friendly with a large selection of my favourite beers and gins. It was nice to see sensible prices returning to our favourite bolt hole. Well done the Royal Castle

Have been coming to The Royal Castle for over 30 years. It is difficult to see any improvements that the new owners have made. Certainly Rm 29 still suffers from extreme low water pressure and a door that won’t fully open because the bed frame and 2 bedside cabinets are too big for the room.
The now complete lack of hotel parking facilities means it’s unlikely we’ll stay at the Royal Castle again.

Hotel is dated but In keeping with the area, restaurant and bar areas are great! Biggest annoyance for me was we specified we had a 4 month old baby but we’re located in the room as far away as possible up 4 flights of narrow stairs, with no parking near by it was very frustrating. The room and bathroom we were given did not look nothing like what the photos do!

Hotel under new management. No parking arrangements, no lift in hotel, room on third floor up 38 steps. Main restaurant closed due to staff shortage, meal in pub bar with dogs not great, my wife’s meal of Monk Fisk curry was inedible and was sent back. Small 4ft 6 inch bed in what was supposed to be an upgrade room. Shower water temp went hot and cold when other guests were using their bathrooms

When I first got there are they had the wrong setup for the room so I had to wait for him to sort out two single beds not a double then they told me to wait in a bath and I come and get me when I went into the bar I could not get a table because it's all booked by people who not even staying at the hotel the check-in was terrible she didn't show you to the room just said yeah to set up there overall what we paid was far far too much I would never ever go back to that place again

Lovely position

The lack of a lift was problematic as one of our party has limited mobility: the lack of a lift and the number of stairs should be prominently pointed out in the hotel’s literature/website etc. However, the hotel itself is very nice, the staff are efficient and friendly and the breakfast, although a limited menu, was well cooked and presented. The hotel is in a wonderful position, overlooking the harbour and close to many lovely, quirky shops and restaurants.

Since hotel changed ownership,standards are not same.Needs revamping and now no car park.Staff were very good but very short handed which left some parts of hotel closed.

Beware inconsiderate guests in the car park!

Really comfortable bed. Perfect location. Off site parking (designated for hotel guests only). There was an issue when another guest had blocked our car in (luckily I checked on our car the night before as I knew we had to leave around 4.30am the next morning) and he was none too happy to move the car......at one stage he refused and I was not happy. Not the fault of the hotel at all, but an issue other guests may need to be aware of. Disappointed that when the room was serviced the tea/coffee/water wasn't replenished

Great Stay

Great stay at Royal Castle Hotel. The 17th century hotel is full of character whilst still being clean and comfortable. The staff were brilliant and the downstairs bar / restaurant was great. The location - in the heart of Dartmouth - could not have been better! Excellent stay and will definitely be back!

Lovely hotel in great location

Really impressed with the hotel, nice large comfortable room and bathroom. Great location to explore Dartmouth.

We bought our dog and there was a dog bed and treats in the room, nice to get something for the extra dog charge unlike most other hotels.
