It was not expensive but there were lots of unacceptable things about this hotel. No air conditioning or fan. Rooms are hot. Shower stall extremely small. Severe internet problems - very frustrating for guests and staff who said it was a longstanding issue for the hotel. It took several trips and requests to the front desk staff to attempt connection and finally to be told only my device would be allowed to connect as they have limits. Too bad for my wife. To top all this off, the front desk is completely closed for several hours during the day each day. This is unacceptable. The hotel is very old and the area surrounding it it kind of seedy. Its a 15 minute walk to the Metro which is it’s one redeeming feature. Even though we are not fussy travelers we cannot recommend this hotel or the area

The toilet room smelled like urine. The shower curtain had mold on the bottom. But otherwise
My room was comfortable with the fan on and window open. I appreciated the kitchenette. The Expedia site said there was laundry on site but I had to walk 8 min to a laundromat. But the laundromat had instructions in English and big machines that worked quickly. Great location to get where I wanted in Lausanne.

Clean and good location, but it is an old building and the insolation is nonexistant. If your neighbors are noisy, you hear them!!! The street is usually quiet, except twice a week when they pick up the garbage at 6.30 AM

The room was really average, but acceptable for the price - sparsely furnished but almost sufficient. What really bothered me was that it was dark: there was no overhead light and only one bedside lamp with a 15watt orange bulb that even when directly pointed at a book did not provide sufficient light to read. The brightest light was in the bathroom - the spotlights built into the cabinet over the sink - useful! But too far to serve as a reading light for the bedroom. There was a desk but no desk lamp and only a small light over the tv (a useless piece of furniture if you want to read) and the tv completely blocked it so you couldn’t really use the desk either. The room was overheated but the windows did open.
The place seems quiet at night except I got unlucky with some street noise from a loud drunk…
The bed was clean but there was a pee guard under the sheet that covered the middle area of the mattress - sth kept bunching up and I thought it was the sheets until I pulled out that plastic lined sheet about 20 inches wide. That was odd…
Probably would stay there again - but must remember to bring my own reading light!!

If you stay here and arrive by train, make sure to take the metro to the Riponne - Bejart station. It will save you walking up the hill. The hotel was a good value. The people that worked the desk were helpful and knowledgeable.

the toilet always had some sort of running water sound, which was uncomfortable at times, not to mention that the sound proofing of the room is very poor. the breakfast options are also limited. for 15 euros it makes more sense to have something from around the corner. the hotel is quite old, but staff are generally friendly.

One of the better budget options I've stayed in. There was a lift. There was a small kitchenette however there was no plug in the kitchen sink, which made washing dishes difficult. I did ask reception and housekeeping about this but in my two day stay no plug was provided. I was locked in the shower cubicle! It used a very old lock and key, which was impossible to unlock, I had to shout out for help!

The entrance area is kind of dark, not so inviting. The staff was great. Possibly more options for something to drink or snack on from the vending machine. The wi fi was down half of the time I stayed. Also, it was impossible to get a password if you didn't have a phone that worked in Switzerland. The password for the wi fi was sent to your phone as a text. If you didn't have service, no wi fi. It was a little tough cooling off the room. I was pretty hot outside during the day and pretty uncomfortable in the room until very late at night.

The worst hotel stay of our life

The reception is not always open, the area did not feel safe, and there was a suspicious person at the door when we came back from dinner. An online search of the safety in the area confirmed our fears. The adverse feedback to hotels.com on our experience was met with a personal push-back from the receptionist and an argumentative and legalistic e-mail from the hotel director.

you can tell they started to renovate but something happened when you enter the bathroom or \"kitchen area\" (which is really just a closet with a sink, a mini fridge that didn't work, an electric kettle and coffee/tea supplies. the beds were fine, and the chair in the room quite elegant (although don't sit in it, it sinks). there is no air conditioning which can be common in Europe but being on the top floor it was horribly hot and the only window (which stayed wide open throughout our stay) is on the ceiling with no shade so the sunlight would wake us in the morning. The worst part was really the bathroom which is tiny (only one person can fit in at a time, and falling apart. My husband didn't even fit in the shower. He's a slim 6'2\" man but not a giant of any kind so this made it really uncomfortable. Between the heat and the disgusting bathroom, our stay was very uncomfortable. The staff is very friendly and they do give you a free transportation card (although we had the swiss family pass which covers most transportation). They say they are in the process of a renovation so I would definitely wait until it's done.

This was a great little hotel near the centre of Lausanne. The staff were very helpful when we arrived as there is limited parking, but they managed to find us a space. Only drawback was there is no air conditioning and it was quite hot in August. Room is on the small side and so is the bathroom, especially shower which was a tight fit - but it was very clean and well decorated so not a problem. This hotel is very close to many lovely restaurants and old city sites. The staff were friendly and spoke English very well. Would definitely stay again.

Nice room but unacceptable bathroom

The private bathroom was not acceptable in the slightest as the sloping roof (I was on the top floor) meant that I was unable to stand upright to use the shower. Even kneeling was a stretch. When questioned, I was told to use the shared bathrooms available despite having paid for a private bathroom room. The room was also right next to a shared toilet meaning I heard the flushing noise constantly during the night. If you stay here make sure you confirm you will have a usable shower!!!

The hotel location was perfect for our trip. The neighborhood is very quiet but is close to a metro stop and to the Old Town and cathedral. It was a very warm week and the room has no air conditioning, but we got a fan from the front desk and left the window open and the temperature cooled down well. We used the car park for the hotel and that was very small but very convenient.

Very Nice Hotel in Central Area

The hotel is situated right in the heart of the city, most of the sightseeing locations and shopping in particular are in walking distance. Room was clean and with good furniture, but with a small bathroom and especially small shower. Staff was very helpful, the optional breakfast for a surcharge is not as much as you would normally expect for the price.

Beautiful city to visit and the price and location of this hotel was perfect. My son and I shared a room with a double and a twin bed with our own bathroom. We walked to most sites. The farmers market is a must see as well as Ouchy. Great time but be prepared to do a lot of walking or hop on one of the many buses. Transportation was easy to figure out.

The place had alot of character, was clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful! Thanks guys. The one draw back was the road works right outside my window. They started work at 7.30 am. So no sleep after that. Nothing to do with the hotel though.

Room was good for sleeping, very hot without air conditioning. My roommate who stayed with me noticed that our room (307) had older furniture than other rooms had, but I suppose that we wouldn't get the same cheap price for those. The toilet and shower room were tiny, but cute. Very tiny. Tiny.

There was a small convenience store around the corner, coop wasn't too far and every location could pretty much be reached by foot. Metro was very close as well, hard to get lost getting to it from the hotel.

Overall, it was a decent place to sleep at night after exploring the city.

No air conditioning with 85F nights.

One of the hottest days of the year with no AC. One of the two windows was bolted shut and would not open. The neighborhood was a bit noisy. Not much sleep during our stay. Still need to rectify whether we paid for two nights or overpaid for 3. Our cc was charged in the U.S. For one nights stay 3 days before our arrival. The hotel staff claimed that was a hold and they did not receive credit. Our CC company seems to say otherwise. Could not get Expedia's website to respond to our inquiry. will need to investigate further when we return home.

Staying at Hotel du Marche

In general, our staying at the hotel can be valued positively. For a two-star hotel, I mean. Good location, very close to the metro station. Free travel cards for all public transport in Lausanne during our stay. The room was cleaned every day. We had coffee, tea, sugar and electric water boiler, so we could enjoy hot tea and coffee in our room.The only thing which we thought was not good is the mold in the corner of our room. Unfortunately we have noticed it too late to ask for changing for another room. We informed the staff at the reception though to avoid it for future guests - so,please, check your room when you check in. The mold is really bad for human health!!! All in all we would recommend this hotel as a really \"small budget\" place which really saves money in such an expensive country as Switzerland.

Budget hotel for a budget stay

You don't expect much for the price charged at Hotel du Marche. And you get what you expect, more or less. The rooms are tiny, the beds are not real comfortable, and the walls are thin. On our first two nights we slept well, but on the third night a couple was \"making noise\" from 11 until 1 or 2 am, and we heard every detail. Not so pleasant, but solved with earplugs. The shared bathroom and shower at the end of the hall were tiny, but clean. But for the price, you only expect a clean, safe hotel room, and this hotel delivers.

Very pleasant stay. Rooms are very clean and spacious enough; staff is friendly. Hotel is only a 5-minute walk from the bus stop, and bus ride is only 5 minutes from the central station. We also got transport cards, compliments of the hotel, which gave us free unlimited rides on the buses and trains within the city during our stay. This saved us money, which offset the cost of food.

The hotel was fine but the check in was very slow and tedious. The room was clean but could probably use a bit of updating. We had plenty of room and the bed was comfortable. The surrounding area was fine and we felt safe walking to get dinner. There was no parking, but this is a problem throughout the town. We parked in a nearby garage and it was fairly expensive, but safe.

The staff was really helpful, and could speak to customers in various languages, including English. The hotel is in a great location, and perfect for our needs, as far as price and proximity to the metro, and other needs. The rooms were basic, small but tidy, and the bathroom (we had one in our room) was adequate, and clean. The beds were comfortable. Of note-the hotel rooms do NOT have hair dryers. Bring one, or borrow one (they have only 2) from the front desk. I liked the up to date keyless entry to the rooms, and it had a lot more charm than many other hotels in the area. The front garden was very nice too. They provided very big bath towels, which was a pleasant thing, compared to many other budget priced hotels that I have been at in the past.

Basic, but convenient hotel near the city centre

The hotel is in a good location, in a quiet street, a few hundred meters away from the city centre and the underground. My room was clean and the bed comfy. The wi-fi connection was a bit unstable, but workable. My only complaint would be that there was no phone in the room, so that I had to take calls on my mobile (which cost me money) or on skype (which was not ideal, as the quality of the video wasn't great).

The staff were very friendly & helpful, and the hotel itself was fine, but they need to upgrade the rooms a bit & certainly these days a shared toilet & shower is not what I would expect. There are basins in the room, but it wouldn't be difficult to put a small toilet & shower in there as well. It was really busy & there was nothing else available near the centre of Lausanne, so I took it. The Wifi was good.

Room was clean, although sparsely furnished and only then with Ikea furniture. Street was quiet. Reservation only mentioned shared bathroom, but it's also a shared shower. But that's on hotels.com I suppose. The main reason why I'm not rating the hotel great is because the workers leave it unattended at night (from about 10pm-7:30am). For this much money I expect someone to be present. In fact, there was a very loud dripping and leaking in my room all night and there was no one on site to fix it.

The hotel is near the cathedral and 5 minutes walk from Riponne - Maurice Béjart metro station (line 2) - I wouldn't advise walking from the main rail station with any luggage (would be uphill all the way).

I checked in and was given my key only to enter the room and find out it wasn't clean from the previous guest. Staff was unapologetic and told me to come back later. Then offered to call me when it was ready but never did. I asked for a cafe recommendation and was told there were some around the neighborhood. The room was fine even with a small fridge. But the bed was in a loft space and I happen to have a broken foot and a walking boot making it more difficult to navigate the unexpected steps and 4 foot ceiling of the loft.

Smallest shower in the world! We stayed one night, had requested twin beds for the adult kids and: sorry none left! Asked for advice for a dinner place and were given the names of two tourist traps but found a treasure, La Pinte Besson, just 10 minutes away. We slept in a clean bed in a clean room though and it was cheap, so we really got pretty good value for what we paid.

it was pretty good. the receptionists were really nice and the rooms were clean. if you're going to book a room with a shared bathroom, be prepared to squish into some small bathrooms and showers. however, they do give you your own sink in the room so you don't have to use the shared ones all the time. the hotel is only a 2 min walk to place de la riponne and the rest of the city center.

Temperature of the water in the shower could not be adjusted - only scalding hot water was available.

A relaxing place in a distant, foreign country

I had an amazing time at this hotel. I was traveling to Switzerland for the first time as a lone, young female with almost no French abilities, for business. The hotel is so conveniently located and near most of the important tourist sites in Lausanne. Fanny (and I'm sure the other people too) at the front was extremely friendly, helpful, and had great English. I felt really at home here and would definitely stop here again. Here are some things I didn't see mentioned in other reviews.

- Despite it having a common bathroom, you do get towels, shampoo (though not very good), soap, and a sink in your room. You don't get a toothbrush / toothpaste
- They have electric converters available for a returnable 10 franc / euro / dollar deposit
- You do get the free Lausanne transit pass for the duration for your stay
- They have free chocolate at the window!!
- The office closes for lunch and at night, though you can use your card to get in whenever.

Other things: I thought people mentioned the train was far or an uphill climb... um what? It's a 3 minute flat walk to the Riponne station... Also, for female travelers, I felt this place (and the area) was very safe and clean as a lone female traveler. Lastly, my internet connection was incredibly easy to log into and fast... I noticed some people complaining about this, but maybe they've fixed it since.

So yes - come here!!
