One-Star Review for Best Western Chinatown Hotel, Yangon. Absolutely Disgusting and Overpriced – Avoid at All Costs! False Advertising at Its WorstI booked a 12-night stay here through Expedia (split into two prepaid bookings: Nov 5-8 and Nov 8-17, 2025), expecting a decent Best Western standard based on the branding, photos, and description suggesting a modern, clean upscale hotel in a convenient location. What I got was a filthy, infested dump that doesn't even deserve two stars, charging prices comparable to actual five-star properties like the Pan Pacific Yangon (where I fortunately moved after just two nights).From the moment I checked in, it was a nightmare:The room was dirty with visible grime.
Cockroaches scurried around openly.
The toilet was constantly blocked (even when empty), and when I called for help, a staff member tried to unclog it with his bare hand wrapped in a plastic bag – no plunger, utterly unhygienic!
I woke up covered in insect bites from the bed bugs or whatever was infesting the linens.
Basic amenities were missing: body soap and shampoo dispensers were completely empty on arrival. When I requested refills, staff showed up with diluted mixtures in old water bottles, half-filled the dispensers, refused to top them up properly, and then tracked muddy footprints all over the bathroom floor and even onto the towels.
Lights flickered constantly.
Internet dropped out repeatedly or didn't work at all.
Power outages (common in Yangon) were made worse

nothing at all like what is advertised and the pictures are greatly enhanced to give a view of the property that is nothing like what it is in reality. very dirty, cockroaches, toilet clogged and staff unclogs it by hand!, leaves muddy footprints all over room. etc.

Wow...I love this hotel..right in china town which make all easy for exploring. Very..very good service and nice brake fast. One of their Guest Services staffs,Han Nyunt is very helpfully, he suggested places to go and fun. I will always come here anytime in Yangon.

First, to set expectations, this is an older property that has received a lot of recent attention. Some floors look great, others still need attention. Overall, I was very happy with my room. They should look to their windows as a major renovation. As is, they do bleed heat (which costs them) and they allow a lot of the street noise in. The staff are wonderful, and very attentive to your needs. The breakfast is quite good, and contains local attractions. The location is what rules here, as you are - as you would expect - on the doorstep of Chinatown. And don't forget the kitchenwares market is just around the corner. Overall, good value for money in Yangon.

Pay attention to the room you book

We arrived to the hotel in the middle of the day and the girl at the reception barely spoke English. Fortunately the bellboy were speaking English and helped to translate in both directions. I showed my Diamond select status and the girl changed the room to another one. We received a very basic room and I cannot imagine what room we would get from the beginning. Anyways this room was not suitable and I asked for the upgrade. This time there was another girl on the reception that spoke a quit good English. She told that the upgrade is the subject of availability and the rooms that one and two categories higher are booked. But they have a room 3 categories higher that will cost me only $15 more because of the Diamond select. I agreed to the deal since I didn't have too much options. The upgraded room was pretty big and clean. The bed was good to sleep. The breakfast was OK, but don't expect too much from it. I would call the hotel pretty tired, but maybe it was renovated in this way. The location seems to be in the center, but the are itself around the hotel maybe not the best one in the city.

The quietest china town area I ever see. The internet access always intermittent and not recommend to business trip people. I send out the review successfully after few times tried.
Only 1 left in the hotel so sometimes need to wait. Facilities is not new, shower, TV are not so new. TV even got a bright spot. Aircon need to be keep on always to keep the room cool. It's not central control AC. The price is still consider cheap.

Like that there are 2 guards standing to guard the main door, the accommodating staff, neighbourhood with lots to see, relatively good breakfast spread, etc.
Just that the infrastructure may not great eg small rooms, thin walls, dated rooms, entrance to the bathroom in the rooms is not levelled properly which may be a safety hazard, etc.

The locality is very crowded. The hotel does not have a portico or proper signage. Reception area was small and usually crowded. My first room was a total disappointment- it was small, dark and smelly. When I upgraded the next morning the room was much better - but I had to pay extra for the upgrade.

Breakfast was good, though.

Overall they have tried to dress up the interiors of an old crusty building. Exterior needs attention for sure

My only complaint would be the air con in the room - there was only one unit that took a very long time to cool off (set at a temperature of 16 degrees, but don't think it ever got lower than 25 degrees in the room). I loved this hotel, for the price compared to all the others in area you get great amenities and value for what you pay. The staff is outstanding. The managers Andrew and Joseph where the best. Everyone seemed to do what they could to make my extended stay as great as can be. I really felt as if I was wanted there which is how it should be. Now to all those booking there are a few things to note. You will wait an eternity for the elevator (very slow) and theirs only one available for customers to the main entrance. Also it seemed no matter how much I had the staff clean the room as well as trying several times myself, the bathroom sinks and shower glass just never seemed to get truly clean. After a while I figured it was probably because of the humidity there in Yangon or something. The hotel helped me a lot booking places to go and having a water an d juice jug in the lobby was a excellent idea and I found myself using it more than I thought in the extreme weather there. Also I recommend everyone try there cloths cleaning service at least once. It's not that expensive and they literally re packaged my cloths in store packing as If I just purchased them brand new, amazing. Also everyone in the waiting staff, house keeping and the boy that greets at the door (please forgive me I forgot how to spell your name) where all very cool people you would want to hang out with :-p .If I ever return here I would definitely stay at this hotel. Loved it!

Overall the hotel was OK, smallish rooms, the staffs polite n attentive but the room has a bad odour throughout our stay. It was frm the shower room water outlet. Had to buy n place jasmine flowers to try to counter the bad smell. Both our rooms had this issue.
Breakfast was adequate for the price but found a life spider in my salad. When told that to the manager he brought the chef who apologized by saying since it is alive, the spider must hv fallen from the ceiling. He will suggest pest control to his management. We'll at least was just a spider n not a lizard😐

Better options in the area. Staff very hit and miss (from helpful to flat out surly.) And the larger rooms on the top floor are a terrible value. (Expensive and ugly but at least the view is blocked by weird metal webbing that wraps around the building.)

The food is average and pretty expensive.

An oasis! The only thing negative I have to Report is that Chinatown is a poverty stricken wasteland. It is not trendy and there were no good Chinese restaurants to be found. Had dinner at a Japanese place a few blocks away.
BW Chinatown is a good value at $47/night. Comfortable bed in American size room. No additional charge for breakfast which was excellent! Very tasty selection of Chinese and Western dishes. Good brewed coffee to start the day off on the right foot.
Staff was helpful on directions and hailing taxis. Small lobby and only one elevator are drawbacks. Otherwise, good stay and value for money.

I hate short shower curtains!

We stayed at this hotel for 1 night. The colours used in the room are reminiscent of the orange/brown hues that were popular in the 70s. Awful, but the room was clean, so who am I to complain. What I did not like is that the shower curtain is too short, thus, when you take a shower, the floor all around the toilet gets wet. It's quite annoying, really.
Also, the reception is not accessible directly from the elevator, but you need to get up approx. 5 steps to the elevator, so this hotel is not ideal/recommended if you are handicapped.
We had dinner in the restaurant and the food was quite tasty.

Next to the main road on Chinatown area so expect some noise. I asked for a nearby gym as there is no gym facility in this hotel, the hotel staff was very helpful. They connected me to Best Western Green Hill where i could use their facilities there for free. It was a great arrangement and really appreciate their staff. Great job!

Room in good condition - all amenities & very clean (decor a bit garish). Bathroom excellent (but see below). Service at reception & restaurant great. Only issue hot water - took ages to run hot & then only just hot enough. Location noisy - Yangon drivers like their horns - also ambulances & an unmuffled car racing up & down the road during the night. Hotel provides complimentary ear-plugs but noise-sensitive people might suffer. Noise was a drawback I was prepared to accept as location near 19th Street offers lots of options to eat & a decent western style bar - & the locals are all smiling and friendly. Only one lift - takes a while to arrive given the number of floors. There was a power cut while I was in the lift but in 20 seconds back-up generator had kicked in & things were operational again - big plus for having that sorted. Restaurant a bit pricey compared to food available in 19th street but free buffet breakfast offered a great selection. Didn't use US$35 massage service as can get the same thing a few blocks away, again in 19th St, for US$10. After dark in that area there are chaps who will approach you offering ‘ladies' – so be prepared for that. Hotel has free wifi of course. Taxis located right outside but reception called Grab & was 7000 kyat from hotel to airport as opposed to 1500 kyat (US$10) in taxi on arrival (but grab car was also a taxi ??). Overall very good experience - Recommended if your parameters fit the above.

Very pleasant stay.

Having stayed in a BW in Indonesia several times, the BW in Yangon is of equal standard.
The room is big, clean and comfortable.
The buffet breakfast is good.
The only drawback is the location - Chinatown is one of the less cleaner places
in town albeit convenient to do very \"local\" shopping and eating.
Would probably stay again although quite tempted to try another BW at Green Hill in Yangon
next trip.

2 night visit

Very nice hotel in the center of China town. Great selection for breakfast and comfy room.
The location is okay and around 30minutes walk from the center of yangon.
