This place is a must-stay! A short walk from Kyoto station and right across the street from the incredible Higashi-Hongan-ji, it is also close to restaurants and konbini. The traditional style rooms are beautiful and spacious. The staff were incredibly attentive and kind (some speak English). The traditional breakfast (available for purchase) it absolutely incredible as well! There is also a small bath available for use (divided by gender), which was a great way to relax after a long day of sightseeing. I highly recommend this place!

Amazing stay for our first visit to Kyoto. The staff at this hotel cannot be more accommodating and helpful. From the minute we walked through their doors, they made sure we had everything we need. They even helped carried our luggages to our room. I cannot say enough for the traditional Kaiseki breakfast. The meals each day were delicious and prepared with care. The whole staff treated us like family. I will definitely be back again.

Hokkaikan Ohanabo was an amazing stay if you are looking for a nice ryokan that has good traditional decor and that is fairly close to the main areas of Kyoto. My group arrived a little earlier than our check in time, but they kindly allowed us to store our luggage there so we could enjoy the area before returning to official check in. We were also looking for nice breakfast places and cafes to check out while we waited and they recommended us some places that turned out to be some of the highlights of our trip. Everyone was so kind here. I would definitely return here and would definitely recommend this ryokan to anybody wanting a nice place to stay.

We had a wonderful experience here. When looking I was worried that it would be in a more industrial setting, but the road ended up being surprisingly quiet and the Hongan-Ji temple across the street was beautiful outside and inside. We paid for the temple view room and that was impressive to look at.
The staff were over the top kind and helpful and seemed very proud of their work. The food was also over the top. Dinner was extravagant a few items were the best I've had of that category (seared cod, lightly tea flavored mochi, etc). They have good beverages including local sake and an extraordinary plum (ume) wine they make themselves that was thick and flavorful. I was devastated that I couldn't take a bottle home. I could barely touch breakfast which was less massive but still extensive. Don't expect anything sweet or western in the morning. But that's not why you'd come here.
The baths were small but very nice and a good temperature and the bath showers were well set up. I'll note the beds were hard, as seems typical of the area. Less of a complaint than information for those who need soft mattresses.
Definitely worth returning for.

Our experience at Hokkaikan Ohanabo was possibly the best experience of our trip. Not only were the staff the friendliest people, we felt taken care of at each moment.

Our room was clean, spacious, and extremely comfortable. Meanwhile, our dinners and breakfasts were endless treasure boxes filled with so many delicious dishes and treats. Lastly, the baths were so soothing, especially after long days of walking.

We definitely recommend Ohanabo to any friend or family and would implore you to make a booking if possible. Looking forward to staying the next time we're in Kyoto.

My partner and I both loved our stay at Hokkaikan Ohanabo, a ryokan in Kyoto. The staff were warm and welcoming and our accommodations were comfortable and provided a relaxing escape when we needed it. There are baths on premises, which was a unique experience. We highly recommend including breakfast in your reservation -- the daily breakfasts of traditional Japanese cuisine were our favorite part of the experience at Hokkaikan Ohanabo. The hotel is located across the street from the grand Higashi Hongan-ji Temple and is a short walk from Kyoto station.

The best Ryokan we have ever stayed and we have stayed in quite a few in the past 20 years. The service is beyond! The day when we arrived and we were recommended to visit the nearby Buddhist temp but it was about to close. The ryokan lady jumped into her car and drove us there. We were able to see the Magnificent 1001 buddha statues. The dinner was food art, fresh, seasonal with amazing taste, it definitely was a memorable experience. The facility was clean, authentic with all the modern day comforts. Staff takes proud in making all the guests feel welcome. Service was first rate. I couldn’t compliment enough

Staying at this inn feels like home, but keep in mind that they lock the front door at 12am. Otherwise a perfect place to rest between adventures.

This was such a delightful stay. The team was incredibly friendly and the service was warm and genuine. Breakfast was tremendously intricate and beautiful...and different everyday. We're not used to Japanese for breakfast so probably should have just ordered for 1 day. Nonetheless, everyday was a different gastronomical experience. Location is very convenient to Kyoto station. It's a bit noisy as it is on the main road...but the chimes from the temple across the road early in the morning was so calming that traffic noise doesn't bother anymore. Loved every moment spent at the property. 4 of us comfortably stayed in the room with private bath. Highly recommend.

Booked a room for 1-4 people which I assumed would accommodate 4 people, but when we arrived they informed us that we had to pay additional for 2 people for a total of 4. It was another $425 and with city tax was close to $900 usd for a one night stay which was a rip off, definitely not worh it for a 2 star hotel. Would not recoomend and felt they take advantage of tourist families.

This is the absolute best place to stay ever! If you're looking for a ryokan or any type of accommodation in Kyoto, stay here!

The best part is the staff. They are some of the friendliest people we've ever met and were so helpful, happy and cheerful. They are also so passionate about their ryokan and their beautiful city! When we were having trouble getting to Fushimi Inari Taisha because of a road closure, one of the staff even drove us all the way there!

The rooms are very traditional and spacious with modern comforts (such as AC and a modern bathroom). They even lent us yukatas with many colours to choose from. The baths are traditional and clean with great amenities. The staff also let my wife use the baths even though she has tattoos.

The location is also fantastic (right across the street from Higashi Hongan-ji temple and 1 block from Shosei-en Garden) and there is plenty of delicious food and beautiful sights within walking distance! It is also super close to Kyoto station and other buses and trains!

We strongly recommend staying here!

The American poet Maya Angelou said, “People will forget what you said, forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” We will never forget the staff at Hokkaikan Ohanabo because they made us feel as though we were the most honored guests they had ever received. From the moment we arrived, the staff treated us with hospitality we have never experienced anywhere else. They enthusiastically greeted us, helped us remove our shoes, carried our bags to our room, showed us the inn, and offered to help us with anything needed. They washed our dirty laundry (for a minimal fee) and arranged for in-room massages for my wife and me. Any mistakes we made—fumbling with our poor Japanese language skills, dribbling water on the tatami mats, coming late to breakfast—were graciously overlooked. The traditional Japanese breakfast was worthy of a Michelin star rating. Items we never would have ordered for ourself were—without exception—delicious. When we finished breakfast, staff insisted we relax in the lobby with coffee that they brought us. We looked at photos of each other’s families on our phones and snapped photos with each other. The okami of the ryokan, Ayako, helped us plot out our next four days of sightseeing on a Kyoto map, and then not only arranged for our luggage to be delivered to our next hotel, but also gave us an impromptu tour of the town in her personal van before dropping us at our first stop of the day. Five stars is not a high enough rating!!

Truly a special place to stay in Kyoto. I have traveled all over the world and the staff here were among the friendliest and most welcoming I have ever experienced. The breakfast is highly recommended as well. The rooms are large, quiet and traditional Japanese. We stayed during the summer when it was vey warm and the AC was excellent. If you can get a reservation here- book it! Outstanding experience to stay in traditional Japanese hotel.

While in Kyoto we stayed at this amazing family owned Rōyakan Inn. From the moment we entered the building we were treated as family. We were greeted with excitment and welcomed with open arms. Everyone was friendly and attentive. They anticipated our needs and pampered us throughout our stay. The food was wonderful, prepared for each guest based on their needs and what is available locally and fresh. When we ended our stay they helped us get a taxi and walked us to the car to say good bye, family group hugs and even waved until we were out of sight. The Inn is well situated near popular sights, including the famous Higashi Honganji Temple right outside the front door.

The room, building and amenities were georgous and well maintained. We loved everything and were glad we took advantage of the private onsen on-sight. If you are heading to Kyoto we highly recommend.

*bonus, most staff spoke English. while this is not something we look for or need (we are in JAPAN after all) it was nice to visit, chat and laugh in English.

Street side room was too loud and bright, and smoke from nearby smokers flooded into our nonsmoking room. The hotel apologized but they should just convert to all nonsmoking like everywhere. Bathrooms need conditioner and more towels. Hot bath room was nice enough.

Hokkaikan Ohanabo was a last minute change and we are thankful we did it. Close to the Kyoto Station, about a 10 minute walk. Close to restaurants and cafes. The staff is very friendly - probably the friendliest and most hospitable for our entire trip. Our room was impeccably clean. From our futons, to the table, the bathroom - not a speck of dust. And also smelled so clean. Very comfortable. Loved the experience!
My husband and I are grateful we read reviews and quickly switched to Hokkaikan Ohanabo. Arigatou gozaimasu!
Oh and Kyoto's best ramen is also a 7 minute walk!

This was the best property we stayed during this visit to Japan. The staff were all very nice and the service was just perfect. The room was also spacious with this traditional Japanese style. One of the favorite parts is the onsen provided both in the morning and the evening. Even though we had a private bath in the room, we still went down to the onsen cause it was so comfortable and relaxing. The Japanese-style breakfast was also very sophisticated. Overall, you can just tell how many thoughts have been put into your stay here. I'd highly recommend this place and we'll certainly stay here again if we visit Kyoto.

This property was great, and worth going to. If you google ryokan, you’ll find that they often come with a traditional dinner and breakfast. Ryokans are expensive, but they include two big meals, right? When I arrived, I was told that all I could get was breakfast. I didn’t sign up for dinner. What?! The Expedia booking said nothing about that. I couldn’t even pay extra for dinner on the spot. I had to be confirmed 3 days ahead of time. How was I supposed to know this given the Expedia page? Somewhat dampened my experience.

Other than the lack of dinner, it was a great experience.

This property is in between Kyoto station and Gojo Station, which is about 5 minutes walk from Kyoto station. Staff are very friendly, nice and accommodating. The owner even drove my elderly mother & I to the limousine bus stop instead of calling a taxi. That is great service! It was an amazing experience. As a couple, we stayed for 2 nights, 3 days. As soon as you enter the ryokan, you can feel the warmth, the staff are very helpful, kind, and friendly. We had traditional Kyoto breakfast and Japanese beef hotpot called shabu-shabu for dinner. Presentation was beautiful and it was very delicious. Our room was very clean and futon bed was very comfortable. We would definitely go back there.

Small inn w/ breakfast- exactly what we hoped for.

From the first greeting to the final goodbye, this place was perfect. This is an inn, small, warm and comfortable, like we were hoping for.
Our room: warm on these cold December days and spacious for the 4 of us. 4 beds/ futons- super comfortable for all of us- we each had really good sleep on them. Private bath with shower. Small beverage area with refrigerator and drinks to buy. Free tea. No complaints.
Our breakfast: Japanese breakfast with warm tofu cooked at your table in broth, fresh fish, pickled vegetables, rice, miso soup and salad. I can’t do it justice with a description. It was plenty of food, warm, and delicious. Our kids opted for the continental breakfast: eggs, fruit, breads, salads and a warm skillet of sausage & veggies. Followed by tea or coffee. At the time of your choosing in the common meal area at your own table. Again, no complaints.
Finally, the common (by gender) hot bath. My husband went every night and loved it.
We would stay here again and recommend to anyone without hesitation.

The staff were really nice and patient. Dinner and breakfast were also wonderful so that this was the best time I stayed in Kyoto. I would highly recommend this property as the location is quite close to JR Kyoto station, just about 700 meters. What a unforgettable experience!

The ryokan is beautiful and very close to the train station. The staff here was probably the most bubbly and friendly of any place I have stayed in Japan, over more than a dozen cities. They speak enough English to give good suggestions for things to do as well as help make reservations, etc. The rooms are very large! The only downside was the bathroom was shared on the floor instead of in our room.

Our favorite place - ever!

Wow! In terms of service, traditional style and the friendliest most helpful staff you really can’t do better! Incredibly beautiful breakfast. So much attention to care and detail. We love love loved this place!! And when we return to Kyoto we wouldn’t hesitate staying here. Easy walking from the train station, amazing Ramen right down the street. Easy for renting bikes (we did the whole time).

We stayed in Ohanabo for 2 nights while in Kyoto. We had a great time-the room was spotless, breakfast was very traditional and delicious. Most of all the two female owners were amazing! They were so friendly and helpful. They greeted us every time we returned, helped us navigate the city, and even drove us in their personal minivan to our next hotel, just because they thought the walk would be too long for us. I was truly touched by the hospitality, they clearly love doing what they do, and make their guests feel truly welcome. I'd highly recommend staying here for a traditional ryokan experience with amazing staff.

The staff was very friendly, the rooms were beautiful, it is close to the main train station, and the breakfasts were amazing. The breakfasts were different every morning with lots of dishes and they catered to my special diet.

The best staff in an amazing location

My husband and I stayed for two nights during our first trip to Japan. We wanted a traditional ryokan experience, the staff made our stay spectacular. The location was a straightforward, <10 minute walk from Kyoto train station. We were greated with the friendliest faces, our luggage was brought to the room, and afternoon tea was brought to us. The communal bath was clean and the tub very relaxing; this was my first time using this type of facility, and the staff was so kind to explain how to use everything. The room was spacious and the air conditioning worked perfectly. We were provided yukata (robes) for sleep and to wear to breakfast l, which was a fun experience. The breakfast was different each morning, and was absolutely delicious and filling! We needed a cab one night to get to dinner, and one of the staff actually drove us; such a sweet gesture. We were so happy with our stay and truly felt sad to leave the beautiful people who work there; we will absolutely recommend Ohanabo to all our friends and hope to return some day!

Wow, wow, wow! Our stay at Ohanabo was beyond our expectations and was hands down one of our favorite experiences in Japan.They are located just a short walk from Kyoto station and we arrived shortly before check in and was welcomed with warm smiles and hospitality immediately!
Our room (on the 2nd floor) was spacious, comfortable, and spotless. It had everything we needed for our stay. We also had a private bathroom in our room which was nice. The futons were more comfortable than I expected and I was able to request a western pillow which was so soft! We slept well here and didn't have any particular issues with noise during our stay.
3 things we enjoyed the most was the Yukata prepared in our room for us to wear (and to take Kawaii (!) photos in), the common bathhouse - amazing after a very hot/humid day and very clean and relaxing and the traditional Japanese breakfast we were served each morning. If your stay does not include breakfast be sure to request to add it on, so worth it and an amazing experience.
I have to also mention how wonderful our hosts were. They all very friendly, helpful and always greeted us with a smile. It was great sharing with them our itinerary for the day and having them help with suggestions or directing us towards the right way! On our last day, they even insisted on dropping off our luggage at our next hotel a few miles away so we could catch our train on time to Osaka...I think that sums up how wonderful Ohanabo is right there! TY x10!

This place is awesome. Super friendly and clean, nice breakfast and hot spa. The location is really convenient. Bus #5, 17, 26, 73, 83 take you to anywhere you want in Kyoto. A few minutes walk from Kyoto Station. Recommend Ohabano to everyone.

The owner and her staff could not be more friendly and helpful and welcoming! They rescued us when we arrived in a cab without enough cash and helped us find a ship that sold a special item we were looking for. The breakfasts were as delicious as they were beautiful! An easy walk from Kyoto Station and directly across the street from a major temple. Highly, highly recommend this ryokan!

Home away from home

My husband and I absolutely loved our stay at Hokkaikan. We were greeted with the friendliest ladies who were so helpful and open to answering all of our questions. The location itself is super convenient to the train and main shopping attractions, and its location across the street from a huge temple grounds added to its charm. The daily Japanese breakfast is some of the best food we had in all of Japan, and they took such good care of us. They would have us sit in the living area when we returned after a hot day so we can stay cool with some cold tea while they let our room cool down with air conditioning, and they provided a snack that was waiting for us everyday after they would make the room. It was really fun and comfortable to sleep on the futons on the floor, and the experience felt so homey. We absolutely loved the bath downstairs and looked forward to washing up. When we checked out, they offered to watch our luggage if we wanted to look around the city more before departing on our train. We would recommend this place to anyone visiting Kyoto.

Traditional Japanese inn near Kyoto station

This is an old-fashioned Japanese-style inn, walking distance from Kyoto station. It's very small, about 20 rooms and the people working there speak English and work hard to personalize your stay and make you feel welcome. You will get a yukata and should try the shared Japanese bath, which is small but nice. The tatami flooring is in good shape and sleeping on the floor on a futon is comfortable even if you are used to a bed. Breakfast was good and I didn't come early enough to try dinner, which should be reserved in advance. It is not as soundproof as a modern hotel in the same price range and the rooms near the street get an amount of street noise that may bother some people.

Enjoyable stay in this Japanese Ryokan

Although it is not very close to the station, its surrounding environment is very good, quiet and open. It is convenient to the heart of the city and just 5-10 mins walk to the Kyoto station. I love the stay in this Ryokan since the staff are very polite and helpful, also the condition is good and clean inside. I enjoy my nights staying in this lovely Ryokan and love the breakfast so much, which is in Japanese style.

Fantastic stay at Ohanabo

Great staff, couldn't ask for better. Breakfast was excellent, I recommend including the breakfast package in your booking. Beautiful temple across the street was fun to explore. The ryokan's close proximity to the Kyoto Station area gives plenty of food options, and it is easy to catch a cab, bus or train to other parts of town. Highly recommended.

I cannot rate this place high enough!! Of course you are going for the traditional Japanese experience, so a smaller restroom, sleeping on futons laid upon the tatami floor, low beams... the hospitality, location, food, convenience, and amenities of this ryokan makes up for 'sleeping on the floor'

Amazing Staff

This little Ryokan near Kyoto Station was the highlight of my trip as far as lodging was concerned. The staff was incredibly friendly and hospitable. Smiles all around and they treated us like we were longtime friends. Sometimes that really makes all the difference. Also, yes, they can speak and understand a fair amount of English. As a bit of anecdotal evidence, not only did they check the weather for us and provide us with umbrellas, but they also were nice enough to dry our clothes after we found ourselves caught in a downpour. This was after providing us with information on the festival we planned on attending. One of the proprietors even brought us some small souvenirs from the aformeentioned festival the next morning.

The lodging itself was very nice too. It is a small, traditional Japanese Ryokan with a nice sense of traditional style. If you like traditional Japanese aesthetics, you will not be disappointed. Mind the stairs though, they're steep and a bit slippery. Despite the size of the inn being, the rooms are quite spacious.
Finally, the location is great and very convenient. The Ryokan is about a five minute walk from Kyoto station and directly across from the Higashi Honganji temple.

Overall, a great experience and I recommend this primarily for the friendliness and hospitality of the staff.

Friendliest ryokan

We had a great stay at Ohanabo. From the moment we walked in the staff were very welcoming and friendly. The highlight was the traditional breakfast. We would love to return here one day.
