A gem in Kyoto. A short walk from Kyoto station, Kyoto Tower, Higashi Hongan-ji Temple and Shōseien Garden, this place is like stepping back in time to the classical Japan architecture, interiors and culture that drew me to visit. The staff were simply amazing. I stayed in a premium room, which was spacious and had an ensuite 2 piece bathroom. A traditional Japanes breakfast was served in my room. It was delicious and a great way to start each day in Kyoto. If you want an immersive experience of the charm of 19th century Japan, this offers that ambience amd experience.

A complete highlight of our trip! This inn has a rich 187 year history, it's impeccably maintained, with an excellent staff. Every day when we returned from our adventures our traditional room was crisp and tidy with a new flower arrangement, and hot water for tea and coffee. We had a traditional kaiseki-style dinner with the owner/chef, which was fantastic!! After dinner the owner gave us a light talk about the inn and answered questions. Lastly, the staff- the front desk and the manager of the inn were top rate! They helped us endlessly from more amentities, to luggage, to ramen recommendations. All of the rest of the staff was very kind and respectful too. Although the bath does not come from hot spring water, it was glorious to end the day with the most perfect warm, relaxing bath.

Understand what you are signing up for with this hotel- if you are taking trains to get to this hotel, be ready for a bit of a walk on some very narrow streets. But convenience store is nearby, staff is very attentive and personable and bath experience was a 10+.

Very close to train station and easy to get to. Staff were very friendly and kind. Room was impeccable and very comfortable. Showers/Onsen are small private rooms that can be time reserved. Breakfast was a good traditional meal. Although beautiful, The place is noisy both from inside and street noises. They do provide earplugs. Do find it to expensive for the experience provided. The onsen experience being just a hot tiled bath and nothing more. In hindsight wouldn’t have spent this much for it.

What a beautiful experience in a real, traditional atmosphere! I loved the Owner’s philosophy of carrying on traditions by means of making it relevant for each generation. The attention to detail in the architecture, design, even the sogetsu ikebana flower arrangements, and of course, the seasonally unique kaiseki meal, was wonderful.

Wonderful proprietors and staff. We separately booked a dinner with them (highly recommend) and the owner is the head chef. He's very passionate about cooking and it showed in this wonderful 7-course meal, as well as in the delicious kaiseki breakfast that is included with the room rate. Bathing arrangement is much easier than it originally sounded from their email, and all in all a very memorable stay with kind and welcoming hosts.

This place was absolutely incredible. Every detail of my stay was extremely thought through by the hotel staff. I had no idea how personal the experience would be or that the property would have such a rich history. The owner is the chef, and he cooked the dinners in front of us, explained several Japanese culinary traditions, showed us the artwork collection on the property, and gave us the history of his hotel and his family. The food was top-notch, traditional, and different each night and morning (great for seafood lovers!). I don't speak any Japanese unfortunately, but there are enough English speaking staff members on-site to provide translations for everything.
My recommendation for staying here is that guests plan their stays in Kyoto around spending a significant amount of time at Izuyasu in the evenings to fully appreciate the experience. For those looking to stay here but also experience night life in Kyoto, I recommend splitting the trip between Izuyasu and another simpler hotel (unless cost is no object). Note that Izuyasu has an 11 PM - 7AM curfew.

I had a phenomenal experience of a traditional ryokan in Kyoto, minutes walk from Kyoto main station. The property and staff are impeccable, I’ve not slept so well in weeks nor woken feeling so refreshed. The one of three on-site onsen I relaxed in were perfect following much exploring of sights in Kyoto and set me up for another full day of sightseeing. When I come back to Kyoto I will stay here again without doubt or hesitation.

I recently stayed at the Izuyasu ryokan for 2 nights with 3 friends in the Ki superior room. We had an excellent time during our stay in this traditional inn. We were provided with yukata to wear while we were there. We enjoyed the Japanese breakfasts served at the inn, but did not do the kaiseki dinner so that we would have additional time to explore the city as there is an 11:00 PM curfew as a courtesy to the other guests. The staff were very accomodating to any requests that we had and I would definitely recommend it to someone looking for this experience while in Kyoto.

We were all happy we tried this traditional Japanese experience. We stayed one night and took the dinner option. The presentation was beautiful, and the food was delicious. The (included) breakfast was also fabulous.

Staying in Izuyasu was the highlight of our trip, and we booked it on our last day in Kyoto. The ambiance of this place was very relaxing and peaceful. After a tiring yet beautiful trip, we got to soak in a private bath scheduled for us. After our bath we headed down to the common area and enjoyed their home made plum wine, and hot sake. The manager that day kept us company, and we definitely enjoyed chatting the night away. Our room was very spacious, and the beds were super comfortable too.

This place was lovely! Quiet and spacious, toilets and sinks in the rooms with shared private showers. Stayed here for 2 nights with our kids 10 and 12. Not necessarily the ideal place to stay with kids (it’s a quiet, peaceful place, had to try to keep our youngest from jumping around) but we wanted the experience at least for a few nights and they made us all feel welcome.

We heard about the tradition of staying in a ryokan in Kyoto and stayed for one night. We were greeted with tea and sweets and they helped bring our suitcases up to our rooms right away. We had a relaxing experience and enjoyed using the private onsen (bath). Note that each room also has a private bathroom while the 3 onsens are private but shared. We also were provided with a tea set and hot water. The accommodations were clean and comfortable and we slept on mattresses that were placed on the tatami mats. The central garden was peaceful. We did not sign up for the kaiseki dinner (which is extra $) but enjoyed the included breakfast. Overall it was a nice to experience for 1 night, but we stayed at a more modern hotel for the remaining trip to give us more freedom, as there is an 11pm curfew (I believe most ryokans we looked at have one).

Really friendly staff & perfect ryokan experience
Hotel staff were so friendly and nice to us all, with the limited english skills they had they still made conversation with us and were always smiling and helping us out.
The breakfasts were delicious, an amazing sample of traditional Japanese cuisine. Unfortunately we weren’t able to experience their dinner since we did not book three days in advance but I’m sure it would have been just as nice.
As for facilities, the shower and bath room are located a short walk from the room with traditional wooden and black tiled look. The hot baths were the perfect way to end the day. An iPad was provided for use within the room and they have a fast free wifi.
We only got to stay here 2 nights but if I planned again I would make sure to stay longer since I enjoyed it so much. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to a friend or to stay again if I ever come to kyoto again. It was amazing!

Easy stroll from Kyoto train station - 7 minutes. Stayed in family room for 4 with traditional breakfast included which was an excellent and wonderful experience. Staff were very polite, friendly and helpful including assistance with problem with damaged suitcase from luggage forwarding service. Definitely recommend this place and next time would try to book earlier to try the traditional dinner !!

Great overall experience. Conveniently located on a quiet street only 10 minutes from Kyoto main station. Clean, as pictured, good bathing facilities and a comfy bed. Dinner was especially enjoyable – delicious food and the chef explained his process and vision following the meal.

Fantastic place. I could not recommend it more highly. It was not cheap but the service, staff, facilities and overall experience can't be beat. Even if you are on a budget it is worth splurging for one night here!

Good traditional Inn
Since it was advertised as a traditional Kyoto Inn with Kyoto cuisine, we were somewhat disappointed the first night since the dinner was not the traditional \"Kai Seki\" style. We were able to have very good conversation with the owner of the Inn and understood the history and his enthusiasm for his business. The service was excellent and staff were very courteous. Otherwise we enjoyed what we expected to find in a traditional Inn.

Come for the Experience and don't miss the FOOD!
We wanted to stay in a traditional ryokan for the experience. But when booking we didn't realize how AMAZING the food (both dinner and breakfast) was going to be. After check-in, we put on the room's yukatas and headed down to the on site, private onsen for a nice hot bath. It felt great. Then at 7pm we went to the dinner room to take part in probably our best meal of the trip and certainly deserves to be in the same category as other michelin star rated restaurants we have been to. After dinner we walked around the grounds which were immaculate and then retired to our rooms to sleep on some pretty comfortable mattresses on the floor. Absolutely loved it.

Cozy Japanese Ryokan
Very nice and friendly staff. Breakfast is good but is vegetarian (don't opt for breakfast if you are meat lover). You have to take turns with other guests in the ryokan for the shower. The 11pm curfew is not too bad as there is nothing much to explore in Kyoto by that time. Walkable distance to Kyoto station (would recommend taking the bus instead of train if you would like to do temple/shrine hopping)

Loved everything except for the curfew.
Amazing staff, bath was clean majority of the time. The Ryokan provided yukata and PJs, which made the experience so much better. The only downside is the strict 11pm curfew, which restricts the ability to explore Kyoto's nightlife.

Beautiful hotel, great staff, well located
This hotel combines modern creature comforts with traditional Japanese hospitality. It's fairly new, and built with attention to detail. Almost all rooms come with a private garden. The staff was exceptionally eager to help and answer questions. Guests are also loaned a private i-pad to facilitate internet access and emailing. The beds are futons, but much more comfortable. Access available on site to an onsan, a remarkable hot bath. The complimentary elaborate Japanese breakfast was .delicious. It's only three long blocks walk (maybe eight minutes) from the train station. One block away from Shosei-en Garden, one of top Kyoto attractions. My wife was delighted with the entire experience and so was I.

Perfect little Ryokan near Kyoto Station
This family run Ryokan gives the perfect Ryokan experience. The staff are courteous and super helpful. The facilities are clean and nice.
You can also have the kaiseki dinner at the Ryokan but it must be ordered 3 days in advance. The breakfast is nice.
The only downside I can think off is the curfew. It actually locks its doors at 11pm and the shared shower facilities are also shut at 11pm. This can be a bit of pain if you are out at night for dinner and come home late and need a shower.

Authentic Japanese Yokan experience in Kyoto
My husband and I stayed at Traditional Inn Kyoto for only one night. It was very memorable Japaneses experience. It is only about 10 minutes walkfrom the Kyoto station.The room was quite big with separate bedroom, dining area, bathroom with toilet and basin only. To have shower or bath there are several huge bathrooms available and great bath.Ropm was spotlessly clean, all your needs are provided and very comfortable with a small Japaneses you can see from your room. I heard that only ground floor rooms have garden view. There is one problem if you stay longer than one night as rooms are not fully insulated, you can here everyone around you especially the noisy ones. For one night stay it was not a big problem and they eventually fell asleep. Beautiful breakfast was served in the room, mostly vegetarian food but lots of them and delicious. If you want authentic Japanese Yokan experience I highly recommend.

Spotless Ryokan, beautiful bathrooms, great staff
As to be expected in Japan, from the second we walked in, we were greeted with incredible friendliness and the staff made us feel very comfortable and welcome. The room was great and the futons were very comfy. The bathrooms were arguably the best part; impeccable with nice sized black marbles baths. Some ryokans only have community bathrooms but Izuyasu offered 3 with locking doors so you have privacy. If you enjoy Japanese food, make sure you make a reservation for dinner and breakfast!! We missed the boat on the dinner which was a big bummer because it looked amazing! Breakfast was excellent. It's a short walk to Kyoto station and Kyoto tower, but other than that, not too much of interest in that neighborhood. Our stay was great though- thank you Izuyasu!

Excellent Kyoto ryokan
I discovered the Izuyasu ryokan to be a wonderful place to stay when visiting Kyoto. The staff were very polite and friendly. The room was very clean, spacious and quiet. The futons were thick and comfortable. The traditional Japanese breakfasts were very good. The air conditioning was wonderful. The baths were clean and always seemed available. Last year we stayed at the Hotel Granvia which was very nice but in the future I will choose to stay at the Izuyasu when visiting Kyoto.

The kaisaki dinner is excellent with the chef preparing most of the dishes in front of you behind the counter. The breakfast is not as sumptuous as other roykens I have stayed. My suite is located right by the road so have some traffic noise. There is no back out curtain for the windows so there is no control of external light coming in.

I did a weekend trip to Kyoto from Tokyo. I arrived in Kyoto on Saturday morning and after a day of sightseeing, checked into the Ryokan Izuyasu. From the start, the staff was very welcoming and accomodating. They spoke very good english. After check-in and a welcome tea, I was given a brief tour of the hotel and shown to my room.
I stayed in the Kou room on the first floor. Very spacious and had a view of the garden. I would recommend this room.
I opted for the kaiseki dinner which I would recommend. The dinner was prepared and served in a small by newly renovated kitchen/dinning room. The cooking was performed in front of the diners by the hotel's owner / chef. This was definitely a highly of the stay. Although simpler, the breakfast in the morning was equally as delicious.

Only opened recently, the hotel is in top condition. The facilities are very modern and the overall concept is very functional. Bed and bathroom are very nice and big enough for tall people. The staff is very helpful, speaks very good English and gave a very good restaurant recommendation in town. Highly recommended!

Although it was just for a one-day stay, I thoroughly enjoyed the place. Very clean, traditional ryokan located in a quiet street just blocks away from the Kyoto train station. The english-speaking staff was very nice, polite and helpful and made us feel welcome.

We arrived by train in Kyoto and were able to find the ryokan fairly easily (it's less than a kilometre from the station). It was early but we were able to leave our bags there while we went sightseeing.

We spent 3 nights at Izuyasu ryokan and had a fabulous time. The decoration is a mix of traditional and modern, staff are absolutely amazing and and breakfast was delicious (we opted of course, for the Japanese option). Even though we didn't have a private shower (only a toilet and sink) the common bathroom was a delight, very clean and comfortable.
The ryokan is literally 5 minutes on foot from Kyoto station and the nearest subway station so it was more than convenient.
I would definitely recommend this ryokan and will very likely stay there again when I come back to Japan.

Great Ryokan. Emphasised everything great about Japan (service, food, etc.). The Ryokan is in a great location and loved the traditional bathroom. It looked like our room was recently refurbished. Traditional Bliss.
When we arrived at Ryokan Izuyasu we were greeted with a traditional tea ceremony like candy and green tea. The rooms are fabulous and the bathrooms are to die for. Better than any Hotel I have stay at for work or for pleasure. The morning breakfast is ample and the staff are respectful of space and helpfull and friendly. I totally recommend this hotel and the next time I am in Koyto I will be booking back here.

A true local experience
Overall, we enjoyed our stay here. It was a little hard to find (the taxi drivers all needed a map. It was close to Nijo Castle and Kyoto train station so that was very convenient. It is within walking distance of many shops and restaurants, and Kyoto Tower. On the downside, I agree with several other reviewers, the futons are very uncomfortable - and we like a firm bed. The door frames are low and the bathroom small but this is to be expected and was not a problem for us. Traffic noise can occasionally be heard but it didn't bother us too much. The inn is very clean. The hostess/owner is very gracious and friendly but speaks no English. It gave us a chance to use our Japanese and it worked out. There are 2 staff that speak enough English to get by if needed. One thing to note is the curfew (10pm) but this was not an issue for us. Check in is fairly late (4pm) so we just dropped off our bags and came back when we had finished site seeing for the day. They provide tea and a tea set in the room but that's it as far as snacks and drinks. Again, a very good experience overall. We got a true local feel and enjoyed our stay. If you do stay here, be sure to have the ryokan information (with phone number) for the taxi drivers.
