Location is convenient to Kyoto Station and several metro stops. Staff is friendly and helpful. The rooms aren’t huge, but let’s be honest - you’re only there to sleep, anyway. I stay here every time I visit Kyoto and have never found a reason to change.

Pros:
A. It was clean all the time.
B. The staffs are nice and very helpful. For the staffs, I would give them 5 stars all day.
C. The common room is so nice for meeting fellow travelers.
Con’s:
A. Had to pay for towels.
B. I had to put my linens, pillow cases and blanket myself when I checked in so I thought the room wasn’t ready.
C. They cleaned my room instead of the other person who left or checked out so I had to again do the things I mentioned in letter B.
D. We just had a super snorer that couldn’t tolerate and that same person kept turning the heater up to 80F.

Functional. Staff were helpful. Room smelled like cigarettes despite a clear \"no smoking\" sign. Showers weren't too busy and work fine. It's very convenient that they have a little pizza-ish restaurant/pub right next door, esp. if you get in late and just want to eat without thinking about it.

I was taken back by how clean the facility was and how friendly the staff were. We booked this a little impulsively due to a last minute booking mistake but I would honestly stay here again if I had the chance. They make it feel like a mini home with so much information telling you about the weather, things to do in the area, where to eat, etc. The common rooms and kitchens are so nice and stocked if you needed something. Everyone is very polite and respectful, this changed my perspective on hostels. They also all speak English making it extra convenient for foreigners. Thank you!!

Very well organized, everyone was friendly, loved the no shoes policy and provided slippers!, the communal living room space with tables and couches to relax on, the large kitchen and refrigerator to access, and the rooms/beds were great too. Very easy to find, close to metro and bus routes, near the river too which is so pretty! Would stay again!

This is my second time at K’s and nothing bad to say. If anything, it’s more some of the guests that are loud but otherwise the place is amazing! Walkable from the station (10min), with konbinis and affordable eating options around. Not too far from shopping area or
some temples by foot (20 to 40 mins). You can even rent bikes for a good price. A fully equipped kitchen. Showers on every floors and they are clean. Laundry service with free dryers. Honestly, I’ll come again and recommend definitely!

This is the 2nd time I've stayed here as a solo traveller, and I will definitely be back next time I'm in Kyoto. The beds are very comfy and the bedrooms, bathrooms, and common area are very clean. The place has a really good vibe and in a convenient location for public transport and food.

I've been in Japan for 3 weeks now and this was, by far, the best place I've stayed in! I arrived a few hours before check in but was able to store my luggage. I'd like to say a personal big thank you to Michi who was very kind and suggested some places for me to visit around the area. The dorms and common spaces were all very nice (I recommend going up to the rooftop for sunset - you won't be disappointed). The staff were constantly cleaning which was nice to see. The beds were comfortable and the bag storage areas underneath were more than spacious enough. Will definitely be back here and visit other K's hostels around Japan!

A good, safe, affordable, and convenient hostel

Great common room, a couple fridges and lots of shelves to store your own food and plenty of dishes and cookware provided. Free coffee and tea too. Breakfast is basic, I never bought preferring to get convenience store sushi for the same price down the street, but $3 is unlimited coffee and toast, $5 pancakes, sausage, cheese, and maybe some other things, and $6 is the same with unlimited drinks. Dorms weren’t bad, I stayed in an 8 bed mixed. I was the only female with all males but was never bothered or felt unsafe. I was given 2 sheets for the bed and used the loose one to make a curtain around my bunk for added privacy. Showers are nice and clean, though they never got hot just above lukewarm. Guests were always quiet at night (though I did have ear plugs in) and only once did I visit the common room at 6/7pm and it was loud and rowdy with groups of people. In the morning and later at night people would be relaxing. Convenient location close to bus stops and Kyoto station. Cafes, convenience stores, and restaurants (including the one downstairs) are nearby. I enjoyed my staying and the welcoming staff.

It could have been better.

The location was good, as it is very close to the train station. The little cafe at the hostel offers a good breakfast for a good price.
The staff was friendly :)
However, the dorm where I stayed had a very weird smell, I tried to open the windows during the day, hoping it will help with the smell but didn’t really work.
The mattress was terrible.
The shower room had some brown shower mats that gave a dirty feel to the shower room.
You have to fix your own bed, fair enough.. but then they don’t provide you with a quilt cover, only a sheet. I found it unhygienic.

Great location near Kyoto station, near to subway line. Local craft beer nearby as well. Somewhat a hassle to take shoes off and store in locker upon entry, but fairly common practice. Common area was very nice and bathrooms good. Toilet rooms were tight but not an issue. Mixed dormitory was convenient.

Nice budget option in Kyoto

This is a nice budget option in Kyoto. You get what you pay for: room was very basic (and a bit smelly). Yet you can't bit the price. The location is handy for both Kyoto Station and the Keihan train line. Staff were nice and helpful, and overall vibe was young and cool. Plus they have an onsite caffe that offers very cheap breakfasts, drinks and snacks, as well as live music.

Room was clean, though a little smaller than the picture, but it is understandable, staff were all polite and friendly, being able to tore our luggage before and after check in/out is a huge plus! The neighbourhood is is quiet, take note when walking home in the late night. Make sure your GPS brings you along the main road, if not sometimes you got to walk underneath a dark underpass. There is a 7/11 close by, other than that, mostly are residential areas around. A 15 mins walk to Kyoto station which is the main station to many other places. If you have free time, please check out Shosei en just two streets northwest of it. It offers beautiful views during spring.

Stayed in a single double bed (full) room with shared bathroom. The stay was pleasant, and the hostel was in very clean shape. The hostel was close to 2 train stations, kyoto and (i forgot the name for the other one). So transportation is not an issue! It isn't really in the main area of Kyoto, but you can walk to the main train stations to get to other parts of Kyoto for experience. They allowed me to get into the room fairly earlier than the specified check-in time, which was a HUGE plus. Only knock is that you have to take off your shoes when entering the building and change into slippers. Room, shared bathrooms were all very clean. During the peak hours (before bed, morning time before check out) can be very crowded, and have to wait to use the showers. Other than that, it was a nice stay. Recommend!

Best bang for your buck hostel in Kyoto!

I have nothing but praises for this hostel.

The staff is friendly and understands/speaks English so you wont have issues with communication. They would also gladly help you if you have any questions.

The whole hostel is kept clean (especially the restroom!). It's nice to lounge around after a day's tour.

The bar beside the hostel is also a great place to unwind when you are in the mood for drinks.

Lastly, the location is the best. It's a 10-15 minute walk from Kyoto station. It's near a bunch of bus stops and is only a bus stop away from Gion and Nishiki Market.

This hostel appears close to the Kyoto subway station, but if you're carrying heavy luggage, I would not recommend walking! It's about 15 minutes away by foot. The room was clean, but not nice. It definitely felt like a hostel. There was only one outlet by the floor by the door.

On the up side, staff were nice and I enjoyed renting a bicycle to explore the city.

Good stay! The bar on level one was really good and the bartenders were so friendly! Only thing was that the aircon can be uneven throughout the room as it was right above me (upper bunk) so while I was cold, my other roommates further away could feel warm. Toilets were clean and the lounge on level 2 was a great place to hang out or do work!

I was only here for one night, but I had a very pleasant stay. Booked a private room and it was very nice and clean. Communal bathrooms were also very modern and clean. Great staff. They were very helpful in answering my questions about the hostel and Kyoto in general. It is situated in a quiet neighborhood, but still within walking distance to Kyoto Station.

K's House Kyoto

K's House is like half hostel, half hotel of a place. On one hand there's dorms for a cheap price and then on the other hand there's single rooms for about double of the bunk's price. For this review, I chose the single room. The room was adequate for 1 person (though 2 people could fit but with bags it might be tight). Shared, mixed, bathroom was very clean. The hotel staff was friendly and at the front desk 24 hours a day (for what i could tell). There was an attached bar/restaurant which had decent price for draft beer and craft beers (offers happy hour as well). Laundry was only 300 yen for the washer (dryer was free) and they have a great lounge on the second floor with a kitchen. Umbrellas and bikes were available (I recommend the bike for 100 yen an hour). Wifi was strong.

The location was the only slight disadvantage where it was a tad further out than I expected, around 13 minute walk from the main Kyoto train station (which still isn't bad), but once you're there, there's the Keihan Line only a few blocks away which can get you to anywhere you need to go directly (Inari and Gion) or through a transfer (Nijo, Arashiyama, etc.). For Kiyomizu-dera and area, i recommend a bus or a bike. The neighborhood was quite with a few restaurants, but not a bunch.

Overall a fantastic place that I can't recommend enough! I would love to see if there other properties are up to this standard.

I stayed here a few years ago and it was great! This time around it was terrible. The place has really runned down and the smells and bathrooms are not as clean as they used to be. This place really did not do the upkeep and really let themselves get runned into the ground.

The Fox that Howls

There was once a young fox, abandoned by the others, who went out into the forest. A pack of wolves approached the young fox, and rather than flee the scene, the fox stood its ground. The wolves were so taken aback that they adopted the fox into the pack. He learned to hunt, scavenge, and fight off the bears. He then came face to face with those who abandoned him, as they began to encircle him, his howl summoned those all around. The cowards could not face the fox, and ran off.

In a sense, this hostel was like this story. At the beginning I thought it might be quite a difficult place to stay. But it withstood the test of time with great facilities, awesome common room, clean floors, great view, etc. If others would ask where to stay in Kyoto, I would recommend K's.

Great Hostel with great staff and a bar downstairs next door. 10 min walk to station which has a smallish night life area. Once on the subway from the main station most of the dining and nightlife is only a 15 minute ride away uptown near the river. Most of the attractions can be accessed from the main subway station....overall a great hostel.

First time staying at K's House, and it was great! Service staff were multilingual and all very friendly and helpful with everything. The room itself was comfortable, with a huge bed. The shared toilet was clean and well-maintained as well. There's a great cafe/bar at the hostel as well, great for drinks and a bite to eat. The only thing I would say that it felt quite deceptively (based off my eyeball of Google Maps) far from the station, but that could've just been due to it being an incredibly hot day. Overall great experience for the price, would definitely recommend.

Walking distance to kyoto station

We stayed here May 2017. It is about a 5-10min walk from Kyoto station and 5min walk from shichijo station.
The staff were very freindly and tried their english with us.
The cafe on the 1F is good. 500yen for breakfast.
The room was a bit small and the bed weren't the most comfortable but it was fine for the 3 nights we stayed.
The rooftop terrace view is very good and enjoyed being up there.

Staff are very helpful and kind. Rooms and bed aren't the best. Very hard bed and rooms smell very bad.

Like the kitchen area where you can cook your own food and store items there. Also free wifi connection within the place.

Rooftop is nice but they lock it within hours and open certain times.

Bring a towel since they charge you for theirs. Bathrooms and showers are male and female together, didn't bother me. Rooms are also male and female.
