Lovely staff and clean and comfortable hotel!

Lovely comfortable stay in Kyoto, the staff was amazing, room was comfortable. Quiet area with a restaurants and convenience stores around. It’s a few blocks away from subway and bus lines but also somewhat walkable 20 mins to heart of Kyoto. But after being tired from walking all day, it was tiring walking back from bus stop.

The property was good, staff were friendly, and they even offered a voucher for a soft drink/wine during our stay. My only complaint is that the room was very tight. We had a corner room with three twin beds so there was no room for our suitcases. We had to move a chair out o the room to put a suitcase under the desk. Otherwise room was clean and our stay was pleasant.

Overall, the property was good. It was in a good location with food and station options. The service and employees were good and they went out of their way to help. The only thing that I was a little disappointed was the hotel charged us 300 yen for additional towels.

Great Kyoto Experience

The folks at Kyoto Itoya did a great job of making me feel welcome. They explained everything I needed to know about my room. The loaner umbrellas they provide are great for walking around the city. The small cafe on the second floor is really nice. Very central location, easy to walk from there to public transport. And they support luggage delivery, and helped me get my luggage sent on to my next hotel, which was a tremendous boon.

I made the decision because of the price, but when I arrived at the accommodation, I was happy to receive a welcome coupon. And the height was the old key, so it represented the atmosphere of Kyoto well. And I liked the size of the market because I was staying alone.

The breakfast was of great quality. I like that the location is relatively walkable/just a short cab ride away to different sites. The surrounding area is quiet and makes you feel like you are a part of the everyday scenery. It would be better if the hotel can provide lotion in addition to the shampoo/conditioner/body wash. The hotel doesn’t provide daily cleaning (only towel change and taking out trash) unless you stay for more than four nights. Slightly more frequent cleaning would be a huge plus. We stayed for three nights and as much we tried to keep the room clean, the floor still gets a bit messy. Overall a very pleasant stay and the staff is friendly and helpful.

The staff were all very nice and super helpful. Room service was very nice as well and respectful of our space and personal items. It was unfortunate that there was no coin laundry or laundry machines inside the hotel, but the laundry rooms were a very walkable distance. Other than that, we had a very nice stay!

Clean and great location. Not much space for luggage but still value for money. Should make clear that there is extra charge for towels and pillows. when booked for a family of 4 only 2 sets are provided because it was a twin room. I would rather the fee for addition towels etc is added to the total cost of the room.

Good stay

Nice place, but it seems the building is on the \"older\"/aged side. The room I was assigned to had cracks in the wall, but nothing big. The amenities indicate laundry facilities, but it is more a laundry service that the front desk will receive and do it for you, it's not a self-service laundry room. Aside from this, it was a nice stay, staff is very nice.

Great Find!

Very clean comfortable hotel with a nice bright well lit spacious bathroom. Breakfast was a nice touch and service as impeccable. Great location within an easy walk to Kyoto Station, even with luggage.

We stayed at this hotel for 4nights. The size of the room and washroom was good for a family of three. The bed and pillows was comfortable. The location of the hotel is accessible to subway/metro and bus station. It's also near 7-eleven and other restaurants. The staff was helpful and accommodating.

The check in is exactly at 3pm without exception. So at 3pm everyone that is waiting in the lobby lines up (and waits in the line) to resister.

Flexibility of accessing rooms once they have been cleaned and checked would go a long way in improving their customer service.

Nice hotel in Kyoto. The facilities were all updated and the room was nice. The room was comfortable but a tiny bit crowded with 2 suitcases (typical of cities in Japan, though). One minor thing was the elevator - there is only 1 and no good access to stairs, so we had to wait a while a few times to be able to get up to the top floor. We did the breakfast a few days and there are limited options but the food was good and reasonably priced. Friendly staff with English skills. Hotel is in a good area, within a 30 minute walk to the heart of Gion and Nishiki market. Close to a few subway stops that will get you around the rest of the city.

The toilet and the shower rooms are separated. Large bathroom for a cheap price. Worth every penny. They give you a free drink voucher and they have a selection of coffee and teas.

Excellent hotel. Will stay here again.

Room and hotel felt dark and stuff

Is it just me? The hotel felt dark and stuffy. I was getting clarastrophic. I felt dizzy and couldnt breathe in the hotel. We were planning to stay for 6 nights but asked for a refund so we could move to a more open space. The best part was they were very nice and accommodating. They asked if we wanted a bigger room and ended up letting us cancel 4 nights.

Great hotel in downtown kyoto

We love the Itoya. This is our second time staying here and it’s just wonderful. The staff is so helpful and speaks English. We love renting the bikes and cruising around town.

Very nice and hip small hotel with great service. Breakfast was very nice and love the lobby area. Very good customer service. You can even rent bikes for touring around and it is in a great location. Just 2 blocks from the Gojo station

We found the area of the hotel to be 15minute walk to most places, supermarket next door, restaurants close by, staff were outstanding and able to speak good English and were able to help you get to tourist areas if using public transport.

Better than what we expected!

The hotel was clean and modern with an upscale feel. It was better than what we had expected and was conveniently located on a Main Street with quick access to the rail station, restaurants and stores. Will definitely stay there again when visiting Kyoto!

Located close to Higashi Shinjuku station, modern boutique hotel with clean rooms. Rooftop restaurant and also has an outdoor patio seating in main floor outside of cafe. Double twin room is quite small not much space for luggage but comfortable with basic necessities provided. Rooms have a safe and nice view of city. Too bad the cafe isn't open until 10am.

Wonderful hotel

The hotel is located close to all transportation and banks.

Modern, clean, close to Gion and transportation

The boutique hotel is modern and charming. Rooms have all the amenities you need and staff are super responsive and helpful. Location is close to Gion and Kiyomizu Dera and close to subways and train stations. Highly recommend.

Great location and very helpful staff

I was unsure of where to stay in Kyoto as there are a lot of different pieces of advice out there, however am really glad we chose to stay here. Easy walk to the main station and a lot of other areas like nishiki market and gion, great shopping and restaurants everywhere. I unknowingly booked a \"smoking\" room and whilst the room itself was impreccable, as I am not a smoker I found the residual smell difficult to sleep with. This is not the fault of the hotel however and am only saying it to make other travelers aware :) overall would definitely reccomend to anyone traveling to kyoto!

Nice Modern Hotel

Nice modern hotel in Kyoto. Rooms are on the smaller side but comfortable enough. The bathroom was very nice and included a new-looking tub! The staff is nice and if you ask them for directions or any help they'll do their best to help you out. I requested a bag transfer to my next hotel and they took care of it. Also, even though we opted not to get our rooms cleaned every day, we would always get a nice little bag of clean towels and other stuff by our hotel door when we got back that day. The location is also very close to a metro and bus station, so getting around the city is pretty simple. Also, is very close to the train station so that's always a plus if you plan on doing day trips out of Kyoto like we did. Overall we were very happy with our stay there!

Small room with awkward bathroom\n

The room was small and had a musty smell. Western travelers will find the bathroom to be awkward and uncomfortable. It is not a western style shower, rather you must sit in a tub and use a hand held shower to rinse off. The beds were firm.

The hotels location is fair. There are a couple of sites that are close by and walkable. You must use public transportation to reach the majority of the other sites.

Great Kyoto Hotel, Great Location

My wife and I visited this hotel in October 2016 and it was the best out three hotels we stayed in while visiting Japan. The staff is very friendly and they gave us two free drinks during our stay. It's about a 15 minute walk directly north of Kyoto station and you can walk to a significant number of sites from the hotel... as long as you're okay with walking. You can rent bikes from the hotel which is pretty convenient. The only two negatives would be: 1) you have to turn your key every time you leave 2) the beds are pretty firm, boarding on hard. Just note that every bed we tried in Japan is very firm compared to western beds. So you can't really complain about that.

Two recommendations: Craftman is about a block to the north. Great place to get craft brews and meet other tourists. The second is Giochi's pizza which is about two blocks to the east. The wood fired pizza is the best we had in Japan and the owner is super friendly.

Kyoto on doorstep

The hotel was clean and in an amazing position for subway and buses to get around Kyoto. The rooms were quiet and the welcome drink was very much appreciated and one of the best pots of tea around. Perhaps a few more brochures for tourists may have helped and there is not much of a few of anything but apart from that, in a great location! Next time I would like to borrow one of the many bicycles to get around!

Fantastic staff

Easy to find only ten minutes walk from Kyoto stat

Good location, 30 minutes walk to Gion but can take a bus, close to station if you're going further afield. Kyoto is a big city, a one day bus pass is a good buy.

The hotel was half hour walk from train station. The entrance to the hotel was very narrow if you didn't the the sign on the wall you would have missed it.The staff were helpful. We went up to the room it was very small. The shower was over the bath you nearly needed a ladder to get in. The bed was very good but the one pillow was like a slab of concrete so hard two would have been better. The tv didn't have any english speaking channels which was a shame one news channel would be enough. The hotel was ok.

Central Kyoto Hotel, about 15-20 minutes walk from the train station. About equal distance (~5 minutes) between two subway stations. Good sized room for Japan. All the amenities, from tea, to slippers and bathrobes and toiletries. Bathroom compact but good strength shower (and had a tub for those who like one). Air conditioning was good and strong once figured out (I.e. The Japanese controls were not the simplest, even with the English guide). Turned off a couple of times by staff when out, which was unfortunate. Bed nice, but found the pillows very hard. Staff friendly. Didn't like the old fashioned key, which had to be dropped off each time.

Clean, modern and good location

We stayed here for 5 nights. The room was modern and clean. It was compact but managed to fit in plenty of storage.

The staff are friendly, helpful and polite to a fault. They speak English which was good considering our limited Japanese!

Location wise, the hotel is a short work from Shijo and Gojo subway stations and there are some lovely cafes, bars and restaurants close by. The main shopping area is only a short walk away too.

Would definitely stay here again and would recommend the Itoya.

A nice relaxing stay

We had a triple corner room for three, two adults and one child and the bed just fit in so no room to swing a cat. That said the staff are very friendly and helpful, the service was first class. Position was excellent, a short walk to the prime shopping district and a short bus/subway ride to the hub of Kyoto JR station.

A disappointment

We had high expectations for this hotel given the other positive reviews, but unfortunately we thought it left a lot to be desired.

We stayed three nights and had hoped for a comfortable room in which to spend our sleeping hours as we'd be out all day sightseeing, etc. Instead, the room was stuffy and dark, smelled like smoke even though it was a nonsmoking room (the concierge denied any smell, nor did he offer another similarly sized room), and felt a little like a cave, with its dark walls, low lighting, and one window facing an alley. Truth be told, we had booked a small room to save money, but it wasn't the size of the room that was the problem, but the lack of light and air flow. The bathroom, however, was quite large and immaculate.

As for the hotel's staff, one of the women there was wonderful... Always smiling and pleasant, even if she couldn't help us. The other woman was a sourpuss, mostly frowning and clearly irritated by most of our requests (like making a reservation at a restaurant).

As for the positives, the hotel is in a good location, right near all the main subway lines and bus lines. Lots of yummy restaurants nearby yet not smack in the middle of the shopping area.

It's quite possible that if you book a more expensive room, you might have a totally different (more positive) experience.
