Great spot

Beautiful location on the water. Nice grounds in a historic fort. Walkable to city attractions if you’re in good health and don’t mind hills. Onsite restaurant was good.

The old fort is very cool and the staff was amazing. Bar and restaurant were a good value.
Easy walk down to the harbor then up to the city.

My only issue with the property was the bed. Not the most comfortable mattress and on a cheap wooden frame that sticks out too far. Jammed my toe three separate time.

This hotel was beautiful. The property was very clean. The rooms were great. The breakfast was a 10/10. The dinner was great. The hotel staff was friendly and super helpful as this was our first time to the island, they gave us tons of info of where to go to eat/shop/etc. I cannot wait to go back.

A Wonderful Experience

Our experience as Pousada de Angra do Heroismo was excellent. It was amazing to stay in the original building within this 16th century fortress. All of the staff were warm and welcoming throughout our stay. Service was excellent! Breakfast had many offerings - all fresh and delicious. Dinner was wonderful!!!

A well balanced, overall hotel experience!

Clean, friendly, historic, & well situated near the heart of the city, with an abundance of great food both in the establishment & nearby. Angra do Heroísmo provides one of the few cultural & \"metropolitan\" opportunities on the islands & the hotel proved to be a great \"jumping off\" point for these endeavors. My only negative critique of the hotel is that they need to modernize & update the actual rooms to keep up with the tech-savvy reality that the modern traveler both needs & expects. Nevertheless, I recommend turning off most of all the electronics at the first opportunity & indulging in the history that this hotel represents.

Fell short of expectations

THE GOOD: 눇It's a beautiful property, and it's fun to stay in an old fort with such character. The staff was amazing, the WiFi is fast, parking is easy, and the breakfast buffet was excellent.

THE BAD: In the older building where I stayed, there was no lift; it wasn't easy to lug my 50-pound suitcase up those stairs. The staff left me a fruit tray in my room--a nice gesture, but I honestly have no idea how long it had been there, and in the heat the entire room reeked of fruit. The bathroom window could not be completely shut and there was no screen, so my room had several flying insects in it. The bed was stiff and rickety. Also, the hotel is on a hill. Walking to town is pretty easy because it's mostly downhill, but walking back up is a little strenuous. There is a \"bar\" but it's not continually staffed--the bartender also works in the restaurant across the way. There is a pool but it was not heated. I could have forgiven all of these things, but not this one: the water heater took up to 10 minutes to warm the water. I was told this is \"normal\" because the heater is on the other side of the property, and if you were the first one to shower in the morning (or late in the evening), you had to wait. I gave up on two occasions trying to take a shower because I was in a hurry. There must be better hotels to stay in Angra, but be sure to walk around the fort property because it's a sight by itself.

Hats off to the cleaning stuff. Every day we left clothes and things all over the room and every day we come back from our outing, things are all nicely tidied up and clothes folded. We haven’t had that kind of service for a long time. Front desk stuff is very friendly.

Staff is the best!

This hotel is charming, set in a fort on the bay of Terceira. But the staff, from Catria, Flavio and Christine on the desk, to the young women cleaning rooms to the kitchen and bar staff are the heart of this stay. If you want to take tours, you can schedule them online. But if you want the details and the best deals, ask your personal travel consultants at the front desk. Your plans will be made, confirmed, transportation arranged for you, with a smile. You will be greeted on your return. There is no problem these people cannot help you with.

From the point you arrive and Reception onwards you can tell this is a quality hotel in a rather unique location, that is, within a small fort (compared with the large and active one opposite, by Monte Brasil). The architects have worked hard and creatively doing an outstanding job in integrating modern architecture with this part state controlled, part Pestana (Pousadas) structure. There are even two discreet swimming-pools. The rooms are well-appointed and very comfortable, excellent beds good shower, amenities, and pretty fast wi-fi. Breakfast was substantial and included a lot of good local Azorian produce (cheeses, bread, sweets). There is also a designer split-level bar area opposite reception. Free parking outside the fort- a bonus- as Angra generally charges for parking. The chef at the Forte de Sao Sebastiao works some wonders. Good food, beautifully and classily presented. If you are there for a Fado music (food and wine) do not miss out on this. It is a must. Very professionally run. The staff, Fernanda on Reception, Lobelia and Luis in the restaurant are attentive, efficient and prompt. The one small gripe was that although it is a Pousada it is a Franchise and you don't get Pestana Priority Discounts or points.

Outstanding location in a quality hotel

From Reception onwards you know that this is a quality hotel, situated in a rather unique location, that is, within a small fort (smaller, when compared with the one opposite next to Monte Brasil). The architects have done an outstanding job in integrating modern architecture with this part state controlled, part Pestana/Pousadas historic monument. One of a kind hotel

Hotel built inside a fortress. Absolutely stunning architecture blend of the old and new. Staff very helpful and restaurant food is very good. Beautiful sunset view from the hotel as it is on a cliff. We had dinner under the stars and it was an amazing experience. Short walk to the Marina and town. A definitely unique hotel to stay.

Classic fort with all modern amenities

The Pousada in the old Forte de Sao Sebastiao is amazing, they have built an ultramodern hotel inside the walls of one of the main forts guarding the harbor. It looks out to sea from the restaurant and the swimming pool. The service in the restaurant was great. For example, they only had cold milk out, but a waiter foamed up some leite quente for me every morning. Dinner and bar service was outstanding, and the staff very helpful. If you have your own car, that overcomes the one drawback, is that you are a hilly walk away from the historic center and other street life.

So close yet so far

This is a gorgeous property in an excellent location close to the town center...about a ten minute walk. The room was very nice. There was only one issue which ended up being pretty significant. Our air conditioner did not work for our entire stay. What is just as disappointing is how it was handled. Immediately as we noticed it was not working the hotel staff came to the room and verified it did not work and simply stated they were sorry. No suggestion that another room may be available no suggestion as to how it may be fixed or when it may be fixed just that they were sorry and that I should tell the staff the next day that it doesn't work. The next day I was told that we were the only one who had complained of this and they would try to see if something could be fixed. When my wife and I spoke with all of the other guests at breakfast it turns out that none of them had air conditioning as well. I was disappointed that we had been lied to and that this was clearly a hotel wide is shoe that was not likely to have been rectified anytime soon. This wouldn't be a huge deal except when we slept with the window open the winds were so high that IT band the metallic shutters on the balcony all night long so we achieved extremely little sleep. It really is disappointing because the primary function of a hotel is to be able to go somewhere to sleep and it's a shame that we couldn't achieve this because so many other aspects of the hotel are just excellent.

The Pousada was much as expected from other reviews. The staff was friendly and helpful, the location beautiful and convenient. Only complaints were that the bed (queen?) was uncomfortably hard and the coffee at breakfast tasted like instant (which it probably was). Ask for an expresso if you want coffee.

Great hotel, great location

We really liked this hotel. While the room felt completely modern, it was still cool knowing we were staying in an old castle. We got a seaview room, which was great. The ocean here is beautiful. The service was good. Very friendly. The location was great -- right next to the town, the marina, hikes, etc. The breakfast was so-so. I guess it's a smaller hotel so maybe I shouldn't have expected much but we stayed at some nicer hotels on this trip that had awesome breakfasts so we got a little spoiled. Overall good value though.

This is a unique hotel built within a 1600's era fort on the ocean - what's not to love? The rooms are impressive and very comfortable. Their only drawback is a lack of wifi in the rooms. The wifi in the lobby/restaurant area is fine. The location is great and it's only a short walk to downtown Angra. We would definitely stay again.

The best view in Angra

Amazing hotel inside of a fort, part of the prestigious Pousadas de Portugal. I was lucky enough to get a room with the best view available, two sides of my room overlooking the fort, cliff and the ocean. Stylish and very comfortable with a large bathroom. Just a ten minute away from the heart of Angra without plenty of parking. A super enjoyable stay.

Modern comfort in old fortress with sweeping views

The hotel is a modern building housed in the old fortress with sweeping views of the Atlantic ocean. Children will love exploring the fortress while adults take in the view. The rooms are modern, comfortable, and clean. The location near the port is within 5 minutes walk to the center of Angra. The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is served in the lobby. Avoid the restaurant for dinner at all costs--the food is horrible and slow.

Awesome, Convenient Place to Stay

This was my first experience with a pousada and it was definitely a memorable one. It’s a perfect melding of history with modernity. The rooms were very well equipped and spacious, with a television and lounge chairs on the balcony overlooking the yard and ocean. The only drawback was the Wi-Fi didn’t work so well when in the room but once you went onto the balcony or got closer to the front desk, it worked just fine. I suspect considering the fort walls, etc., that the signal is blocked. That was really the only inconvenience experienced. We tried the restaurant on our first night’s stay and was quite impressed. The food and service were impeccable and we’d definitely recommend it. The breakfast provided was quite extensive, providing the meats, cheeses, eggs, breads, yogurt, milk, coffee, juices, etc. Unless you’re looking for a cooked to order breakfast, you won’t be disappointed. Overall, the staff was friendly and helpful but the morning staff seemed a bit more reserved than what we experienced with the evening staff. If staying in Angra do Heroismo, I would definitely recommend a stay here. Not only is there plenty of parking but it’s only a short walk to the center, excellent ocean views, superb food, and not far from the Chateaux.

Attractive hotel - Certain things could be better

We stayed in the Pousada de Angra do Heroismo - Forte Sao Sebastiao for a week at the beginning of August.
Room -
Our room was lovely. It was nicely decorated throughout and the beds were very comfy, However, it was VERY noisy. We were in the old part of the hotel and could hear every move of the people in the room above us, this meant that every morning we were woken at 7.30 am with them getting ready for the day ahead.
Staff -
The reception staff were welcoming and helpful with a good level of English. However, throughout the hotel there seemed to be a general lack of staff. The bar never had anyone there and you had to ring through to reception if you wanted a drink. In the restaurant service was quite slow, we left on a couple of occasions as we waited too long to get served.
Food -
Breakfast, little choice.
The food in the restaurant was a bit hit and miss, e.g. clams delicious, cod tasteless & watery. The bar menu was good and inexpensive. Room service available.
Location -
The hotel is in a beautiful setting and has lovely views. It was a short walk to the harbour and into the town centre.
Hotel -
The pool area was small but lovely and had great views. The hotel itself is very interesting to explore It is in an old fort with many viewing points, giving fantastic 180 degree views of Angra and the Goat Islets.

All in all we enjoyed our stay however, certain things could be better.

Super location close to centre, and garden and pool are lovely. Staff super nice and friendly, and good value for money. But the hotel is tired, and the restaurant/bar service is poor. Not enough staff, not properly trained. Service slow due to lack of staff/training. This could be a €300 a night hotel but it needs some upgrading and more professional staff

Nice location but some maintenace would be welcome. And it cannot be that at 17:00 the rooms are still not cleaned with the excuse (at that time) that the staff went for lunch (if check-in is at 15:00, we were expecting all rooms to be ready at that time). And if you have a 24/7 desk, then make sure someone is there and not having breakfast...

Foi um caso de amor à primeira vista; quando vi a Pousada São Sebastião em Hotéis.com não tive dúvidas. A refinada harmonia e o equilíbrio entre a arquitetura da fortaleza histórica e o design desse lindo hotel em seu interior despertam os sentidos da perfeição. Aqui funcionam também o Restaurante Castelinho e o Bar C, ambos abertos ao público. Os quartos são confortáveis, limpíssimos, o café da manhã é saboroso, com produtos locais, o staff é cordial, eficiente e amigo e a vista para o mar é magnífica. Tudo aqui combina com a belíssima Angra do Heroismo e a Terceira. Para voltar sempre, anexo fotos.

É o local mais tranquilo para ficar a 5 minutos a pé do centro de Angra. Os quartos são excelentes, todos com vista para o mar, e não têm alcatifa! O pequeno-almoço é óptimo. Destaco o sumo de laranja natural, a tábua de queijos e os bolos regionais \"D. Amélia\".
