There is a 24-hour convenience store and coin laundry opposite the hotel, both well within a minute walk. The washer and dryer are well maintained and clean by the owner of the laundromat. Hotel is nicely located, walking distance to transport and downtown Gion.

Overall an OK small hotel but pillows are horrible. Seems like a very easy fix but after many years of reviews about pillows they are still about as thick as a pair of socks. Room smelled damp. We had another 3 days in Kyoto but decided to move to another hotel.

We wanted to book somewhere comfortable at the start of our trip knowing we’d be tired after 24 hours of travel and this was perfect. Location wise, we could walk to most of the places we wanted to see, the team were so friendly, accommodating and helpful and the room itself was stunning and so comfortable with tons of storage. Our stay was amazing! Gion Misen Furumonzen was a great introduction to Kyoto. The location is a hidden gem while conveniently located across the street from a Lawson convenience store. The little bar was a sweet addition to the experience. This was by far the cleanest hotel I've ever stayed in (in the world). The staff were considerate and helpful. We loved it so much, we booked an extra night. 10/10 recommend this hotel.

The perfect location! A short walk to some amazing restaurants and attractions, whilst still being in a very quiet street. Staff were great, hotel was cozy and quiet, more traditional bedding lower to the floor so just be mindful if you have back issues. I stayed here for two nights over my honeymoon two years ago and was over the moon about this location. Therefore, when we came back to fully experience Kyoto we thought coming back here was a no-brainer. We were wrong. Therr were several spiders in our room, room cleaning was very minimal (they only replaced the body towels and disposables as well as emptying the trashcans), the room was extremely dusty and dirty (coffee stains) on the walls and ceilings, they also never refilled our water. Unsure if and how things have changed, but for the price I don’t think I would recommend for a long stay. For a short stay, the space is nice and very spacious with a large tub which was nice after all the walking.

This small hotel located on a quiet street in Gion. It is very convenient to walk to different tourist spots in central Kyoto and just a min walk to subway and regional train stations. The room is small but clean and neat. Bathroom is well equipped and nice for whole day of walking. Staff are helpful and friendly. I would love to stay here again.

This property was lovely. The staff were quite friendly, spoke English very well and we’re very helpful. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms were clean and the neighborhood is great. I forgot about VIP status so I don’t believe we received anything special. The hotel did have tea and water available, but I believe that was for everybody.

I really enjoyed my stay at Gion Misen Furumonzen. My room was very stylish and comfortable, and I loved the bathroom. The bathtub was amazing! The staff were also wonderful: very polite and helpful any time I had a question. I've seen other reviews complaining that the staff isn't friendly, but essentially these complaints seem focused on the fact that the staff are mostly European rather than Japanese. This should be seen as a pro, rather than a con. They are all multi-lingual, meaning they can help a greater range of travellers in their own languages. For a city like Kyoto that draws visitors from every corner of the globe, having multi-lingual staff at a hotel is an absolute bonus.

The location of the hotel is great too. Right on the edge of Gion, so the area is walkable (I walked as far south as Kiyomizu-dera) but the street itself is quiet, which I appreciated. And it's very close to Sanjo Station, which makes travel quite easy (no need to take any packed buses).

The one thing, as other reviewers have mentioned, is the pillow situation. The pillows in the room were like pancakes. I had two beds in my room, so I was able to use the additional pillows, but for a relatively expensive boutique hotel, you'd expect better pillows, or a pillow bar in the lobby. If business-class hotels can have a pillow bar, so can boutique hotels. This hotel's rating would instantly improve if they added a pillow bar.

Beyond that, I had a great stay and was sad to leave, haha.

Fuji is beautiful!

We stayed in a room for 3. 2 beds as normal and one on a mezzanine up some ladders- steep so be prepared! The staff were great. The water was lovely. The view of Mt. Fuji from so close by was great. The recommended pizza place sounded excellent but it had sold out quite early as it is very small. The bakery down the road is lovely. Access to views of Fuji are great and the lake was lovely too.

Great location, most things are walkable. The room itself is ok, the hotel is generous enough to give us upgrade to a garden room but it’s not really a garden just a space between buildings that had couple plants that’s smaller than a normal balcony, because the garden room is on ground floor surrounded by high buildings so you never got to see the sky and it’s dark. The mattress is on the floor but the floor has some funny smell kinda smell like dirty feet. All the staffs are super friendly and nice, but the restaurant recommendation are questionable. So make sure do your homework, they are happy to help you to make reservations.

The hotel is located in Gion on a quiet street . Walkable to a lot of temples and Gion tourist shopping street is also very close. Fish market and restaurants are right across the river. The room is comfortable, was upgraded to a garden view but it’s not really a garden if it’s only a 3 feet deep garden ousdie of the window that facing walls of other buildings, you can never see the sky in that room. We usually call that room with no view. The only problem tho is that if you want late check out will be a charge but there’s no storage for luggages. You can only leave them at a corner unattended which doesn’t seem so safe. Staffs are friendly

If you’re looking for a clean hotel, this is it. The beds although slightly uncomfortable to us would benefit from larger pillows, it’s a personal preference, but you’ll be happy to have 3 of them! The AC didn’t go lower than 20, again it’s personal preference, but if you sleep hot, then AC is must! The bathrooms were perfect and the amenities spot on! On arrival there was a large group that took the latest spot for breakfast, all of them! Meaning you had NO choice other than wake up early or make other plans. This isn’t why I go on vacation, the hotels response was “you should have booked a time when we emailed you in April” I understand space is limited, but not great business to let one party take an entire time slot. Not a reason to not stay, but bare that in mind if you’re expecting them to refund the breakfast option as they didn’t, but offered us two drinks which although were appreciated, we spent more each day grabbing breakfast out. It’s a love/dislike review based on this one incident, but it affected our vacation and I only get one each year.

The bathrooms in each rooms are god's gift to mankind. Not even joking.

The entrance is hard to find, especially when you drop in at night. Hint it looks like the bar, if you see the bar and a window seat with a go board you are in the right place. We missed it at night and another couple missed it in the day, bot of us thought it was the bar (in the US the bar usually has a separate entrance)

Location wise is not the best

The place, the room and service is excellent. However, location wise is not for me personally. The location is situated behind busy street however it was so dead quiet even only at 7ish evening. I stayed for 2 nights and those 2 nights, I found myself walking alone the street to the hotel, a bit scary. The room is very dark and even with lighting. I found it hard to put on makeup. The window in the room cannot be opened. Breakfast wise, I was expecting japanese style breakfast, but it turned out to be western style which doesn’t quite match with the hotel theme.

We left the key in the room and needed the receptionist to let us in. She made us another key. We asked for two keys when we checked in but we’re told we could only have one. To our surprise they charged us 1000 yen and refused to give me a receipt for the charge. We had to pay cash. What a disappointment and rip off. There are numerous wonderful hotels here. Don’t waste your time with this place.

A very nice small hotel in Gion

The hotel is a very pleasant place located in the Gion quarter not far from major attractions in Kyoto. The room was convenient and pleasantly decorated with beds close to the floor in the more traditional Japanese style. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast could be improved by making it in buffet style and not preparing a uniform plate that may not suite the taste of everyone.

Check-in was good. I arrived early and they stored my luggage while I wandered around. Directly across the street is a Lawson which is super convenient for drinks and snacks and other necessities. Maybe a 10 minute walk from the closest station and popular shopping street. Lots of good restaurants around. Across the river is the popular Nakamise shopping street and famous Pontocho restaurant ally. The staff is extremely friendly and all spoke English. The room was pretty clean although some light fixtures had some dust which wasn’t too bothersome. They provide free toiletries including cotton swabs, razors, hair brush, hair ties, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. The lobby also offers free coffee and tea. They also provide some free drinks in the fridge. The only problem I had was the bed hardness. I might just be unused to the hardness of Japanese beds or the quality of the beds in American beds are different but it made it a little difficult to get comfortable and go to sleep. Over all a good stay. 9/10

It’s definitely far from main landmarks, not a 10-15 minutes walk. It’s not child friendly, there is nothing to do with a child there. Tiny dark room, windows can’t open. I moved bed closer to the closet so my daughter wouldn’t fall and it was too hot and noisy every time she turned at night. AC is either too strong or too weak. We were hot and my mother on the other bed got a cold. Breakfast is very basic, not enough coffee. I regret staying in this hotel, should have booked a room closer to Yasaka shrine. Do not recommend

I've visited Kyoto a handful of times over the years, and this was definitely my favorite room for the price. The bed was on the hard side, but surprisingly comfortable. I really miss that bed now. Bathroom was very clean and comfortable as well.

The included breakfast is slightly on the light side, being mostly vegetables. However, it was super tastey (and very healthy). The jams that they have to go with their bread is amazing.

Location is pretty good. Just a 5-10 minute walk from the nearest subway station. Not difficult to get to from Kyoto Station. Very quiet neighborhood. A convenience store is directly across the street.

This is a newer hotel settled between Pontocho Alley and Yasaka Shrine. It's a really short walk to Sanjo station (~5 minutes) and it's right across from a Lawson 100. It's impeccably clean, with attention to sustainability--something I really liked. There are coffee and tea available all day and breakfast was really good! We were very happy with ouor stay!

Cute boutique hotel

This boutique hotel was a perfect place for my husband and I on our trip to Japan. It is not totally central, but it is close enough to old Gion, the restaurant district, and the street markets. It is about a 20 minute walk to each, which for us was perfect.

The only issue we had was that the bed was pretty uncomfortable. It is a traditional Japanese style bed that is low to the ground with minimal support. Upon check out on our final day, we saw a sign that says feel free to ask for extra padding for your bed if it is uncomfortable. I wish they said this to us at check in rather than having a sign that is in the corner where we never went. I would have loved extra padding considering we paid the most for this hotel in our 2 week stay across Japan.

The breakfast was pretty good, there are different breads with spreads, yogurt with different toppings, espresso, coffee and a bento box with small bites.

Great location, super helpful and kind staff. Bedding wasn’t particularly comfortable for my liking and the curtains/ blinds didn’t do much to block out light in the mornings. Some confusion over two properties with close names got me dropped off at the wrong hotel - and Martin at the front desk walked me to the right one. Great service.

No better place to stay in Kyoto

First rate accommodations, service and location. Gracious hosts were extremely helpful at all times. Breakfast was great with lovely bento boxes filled with delicious local organic vegetables, plus rice, soups, yoghurt, cereal and even toast and local jams. Great coffee, espresso, lattes, etc. Beautifully appointed rooms with everything you could possibly need, and spotlessly clean. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

A quiet delight

Very nice hotel in a quiet area, and only a short walk from the hustle and bustle of Gion. The staff are very helpful and the handy phone you are provided to walk around with is a brilliant feature. Would definently recommend.

I stayed there in December 2018 and really enjoyed my stay at this small hotel located close to the older area of Kyoto, the Gion district. The hotel had more of a traditional feel. The room was small but had everything we needed. The staff was friendly and the room well acquainted. A feature that was unique and very useful was the mobile phone put at our disposition for the length of our stay.

The hotel was very clean and the staff was very friendly. All of the staff we encountered spoke very good English, which made check in a breeze. The room was a lovely tatami style room with a terrace, and the bathroom was very well appointed. The bed was not very comfortable, however, and was way too hard to get a good night's sleep. We stayed in the only room on the bottom floor, which unfortunately meant we could hear everything going on in the lobby in the mornings (breakfast and check ins), and could constantly hear slamming doors from upstairs.Overall the stay was pleasant, but if we stayed again we would probably request a room on the upper floors.

The location couldn't be much better; it's extremely close to the main shopping stretch in Gion while far enough away to be quiet at night. Staff spoke excellent English and were extremely friendly and helpful. The room was well decorated and a reasonable size for a Japanese hotel. Great shower.

The bed was good but with somewhat flat pillows. The complementary breakfast wasn't great but it may be more appealing to people who like traditional Japanese breakfast food.

Our overall impressions were very positive and I'd happily recommend this place to anyone looking to stay near Gion in Kyoto.
