The room was very clean, larger than average, and very nice. Loved the small boutique vibe, and the staff was just awesome. They were so helpful with getting taxis and help with the train. Breakfast was traditional Japanese style served in our room. Great room amenities and atmosphere. Love it! We would definitely stay there again.

What a great stay! My family (wife and I plus two teenage girls) stayed in two rooms at Alza and LOVED IT. The rooms are spacious, with incredibly comfy beds and the softest sheets. We had breakfast all days and loved both the Japanese and American versions. We stayed in 201 which had a balcony overlooking the street. It didn’t have much of a view given it was on a lower floor but it was very quiet and, overall, a great room. The other room, 306, faced the other side and was lovely as well.

Service was phenomenal. They let us drop off luggage before checking in and held our stuff after check-out to get more time in Kyoto.

The hotel is a short walk to both metro lines as well as tons of restaurants in Gion. It is also a short walk across the river to more restaurants.

We would definitely stay here again!

Hotel Alza is an absolute gem. It has the feel of a quiet traditional place which it is. It is much more. New and clean and upscale with every modern amenity. The staff are absolutely dedicated to excellent service and friendliness. They may tell you they don't have a buffet breakfast only bento box. However, this breakfast served in your room or downstairs is fantastic.

Wonderful attention to details in the room. Spacious luxury in our corner room overlooking the river. Two layers of double-pane glass dampen the road noise to an acceptable level for us and was outweighed by the convenience of the location, so much within walking distance. Staff were eagerly helpful. The room was very large and well equipped with automation for drapes and lighting. It also had a very functional bath with great amenities including a micro bubble bath and large shower. We loved the modern but classic look of the hotel common areas and room. The staff was very attentive and made us feel very welcome. The location is excellent with the Gion historical district nearby and several train / subway stations available. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and plan to stay here the next time we visit Kyoto.

Before booking this hotel I researched its ratings. I was checking it out based on convenience, but convenience does not override the ability of getting a good nights sleep. I was happy to see it it had a 9.8 rating. Now having stayed there, I am shocked it didn't get a 10 rating from everyone. This is the most wonderful place I have ever stayed in (and I have stayed in some $500/night places). My advise to you is to stop scrolling and just BOOK THIS PLACE. It is perfect. It will have whatever you need or want. I know this to be true because we arrived with nothing but the shirts on our back--no toothbrush, pajamas, etc. The room had it all, besides being downright beautiful and ultra-modern. They spoke perfect english. Their kindness was overwhelming. Once again, you can stop scrolling and JUST STAY HERE.

Breakfast is served in the room either Japanese breakfast style or Western breakfast style. I liked Japanese breakfast style. Staff speaks English, professional, friendly, and helpful. So glad we booked this hotel. Location was perfect. Not far from train and bus stations and easy to take cab. Plenty of food choice and great options nearby. The hotel offers daily cleaning as well, which is rare for Japan. Even our Japanese friends came to join us and stayed at the same hotel were impressed. Service was excellent and no issue in communication. We had our luggage sent via agent and it reached before us. The hotel staff nicely put it before we arrived and gave us an early check in. Highly recommended the hotel.

I just left Hotel Alza and already miss it. We stayed in numerous hotels during our vacation in Japan and hotel Alza was by far the best one. The room was spacious, especially by Japanese standards, bed soft and comfortable, bathroom with jazuzi tub, warm and friendly staff. I absolutely loved their pajamas.
I didn't know what to expect from
a 2-star hotel but it definitely surpassed my expectations. It felt like a 5 star hotel. They provided welcome snack, shaving razors, face sheet masks, mouthwash, all the things that other 5 star hotels didn't provide.
Location was fantastic, convenient to major sightseeing points. Kyoto has a ton of hotels to choose from, but I would definitely return to this one.

Hotel Alza Kyoto was hands down the best of the four hotels I stayed in during my trip to Japan. The location is unbeatable—perfectly situated near transportation and major tourist sites, making it easy to explore the city. The room was spotless, modern, and filled with high-tech touches that made the stay extra comfortable. One of the highlights? A jacuzzi tub with a built-in TV—such a relaxing treat after a day of sightseeing. Everything about my stay felt thoughtful and top-quality. Highly recommended!

Relatively central to Gion. Walking distance to numerous excellent restaurants. Plain and traditional from outside, but high-end inside with elevator to rooms, inside the room was automatic curtains and lights. Very clean comfortable and quiet. Blackout curtains/shades, high end bidet with automatic functions. Dedicated shower/bath wet room. Plenty of room inside. Total of 4 floors, so approximately 20-30 rooms. We booked it 5 months early. Stayed in May 2025.

This was a very charming hotel that had great amenities, great location and extremely nice staff. I had an eye issue that needed attention when I was there and Lulu and Dinda were extremely helpful in getting me an appointment with a specialist within a hour of me checking in. Amazing!! as it was a late friday afternoon as well. Thank you:) I would definitely stay here again with my family if we revisit Kyoto!!

First, the staff was phenomenal. We stayed six nights and they could not have been more helpful! The hotel has a lovely boutique feel in a big city, and is centrally located. A wonderful place to come back to after busy sightseeing days. I would definitely recommend this hotel to adults visiting Kyoto. I’m not sure it’s great for families but it was perfect for us as a couple.

Kyoto overlooking the river

We had a very nice three night visit. We enjoyed the breakfast ( and very much appreciated the extra mile in delivering one for 6:00 am the day we had an early start). The location is wonderful, our room had a river view and when we stepped out the hotel right into Gion and its wonderful ambiance.

This property was is such a good location. Right across from the river. There is a beautiful walking path along the river that you can take to get to any of the main streets of Kyoto. The hotel staff was so friendly & accommodating. I appreciated that this was a quieter part of Kyoto but, walking distance to any popular destination & amazing food spots!

Would definitely recommend!

Close to everything but quiet

The location in the less hectic Gion area was perfect. The staff was incredibly kind and the room was huge and thoughtfully appointed. It felt like a splurge but was actually a good value. I highly recommend this small hotel.

Though it is a 2-star hotel, the room and amenities provided were excellent! They provided multi adaptor, face masks, hair straightener for the ladies etc and these were very well thought of. The location. Is just beside the beautiful Kamo River and between Gion and new Kyoto. Will stay here again in a heartbeat !

Great location. The room was very comfortable and everything you could possibly need is provided, including some things you didn't know you needed, like an eye mask that heats up, a bathtub with microbubbles that clean you, pour over coffee , dishes, pajamas, a vanity. I would stay here again.

Great location and great service

There are amenities necessary and special (face pack, eye pack) and everything was placed in the right spot!! Green tea and roasted black soybean coffee were great.
The hotel is at very convenient location.

Only challenge was that it was a bit hard to control the room temperature. It was not necessary to use AC, but the room were getting warm during the night.

A must stay in Kyoto. Hotel is located right on the river in a central area that’s easy to walk to restaurants and shops. They served a traditional Japanese breakfast and even accommodated my vegan diet. The hotel is basic, no amenities, but the room and bathroom were quite large. We had a great experience.

Hotel Alza is a lovely boutique hotel in a great location in Gion. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The room size is very generous for Japanese standards and the amenities ( like micro bubble bath ) are super enjoyable. 2 things to improve: the breakfast is very limited in choice and more like a prepacked version rather than a lovely food option. We had to eat it in our room because dining area downstairs is too limited to cater for all guests. Also, for what we paid I would have expected an English language channel on TV or at least the possibility to connect to Netflix. Otherwise, we had a nice stay. Thank you 😊

Wonderful hotel in Kyoto is

Really surprised by the spacious, wonderful room at this hotel. It was double the size of most hotel rooms I’ve stayed at all over Japan and the shower/bathtub was just unbelievable. They definitely had a lot of switches for all the accessories and lights for the room but that’s how much each room has in terms of amenities and convenience. The location couldn’t be any better in Kyoto and the staff was great. They even helped me get a reservation at a restaurant that I wanted to visit. A+++

The beds were super comfortable by Western standards, the room was huge in space and well stocked. I loved my city view Double room because it had a cute seating area around a little tea set table couch. I would definitely stay here again!

The thermostat automatically readjusts to 26 Celcius after a few hours. This wasn't very pleasant since it was sweltering and humid in Osaka and every night I would wake up sweaty and have to get up and bump it back down to 24 degrees. The nightly rate here wasn't cheap and I'm annoyed I couldn't control the room temperature where I needed it.
