Staff were wonderful at the front desk and in the restaurant. We were in town to coach at a soccer tournament so our stay was short. Next time we are headed for Nelson, we will stay at the Hume, hopefully for a bit longer!!

This is an old historic hotel. It does not have parking so you have to park at a public structure a block away. They do not have a Bell stand to help you unload your bags.
With that said, it is a cool property and a good experience with a fantastic staff, a great pub and restaurant right in the middle of downtown Nelson, which is a fantastic city.

The Hume Hotel is simply magical! From the historic elements, to the variety of dining options, the Hume is a little slice of heaven. We were visiting Nelson on our honeymoon, and the staff was kind enough to upgrade our room to a double suite. We will absolutely stay there again on our next visit to Nelson!

Overall, it was a good stay. The hotel is well-maintained on the main level (originally built in 1898) and the upper levels are tastefully renovated and clean.
When we checked in, we were told Expedia had oversold our room (2Q suite with a sofabed) and that we would be placed in a 2Q suite room. This was not ideal since we are a family of 6. We asked for a cot which they accommodated. I asked if I would be refunded for the $30 room cost difference and the lady said \"it would be looked after\" (it never was refunded). When I checked on their direct site, I noticed the suite with a sofabed was still available.
The General Store restaurant located on the main level offered delicious food and great service. We went back for dessert after enjoying a walk downtown and our previous waitress recognized us and again, was pleasant.
Upon checkout, we were told we had a charge of over $80 without explanation of what it was. I refused to pay it and asked what it was. They said it was because of our extra guests and I said we would have walked out had we known we would be charged for our children to stay in the room (an extra 30% of original price). They ended up removing the charge.
Note: they charge over $20 per person (including infants!) for any guests over 2 staying in a room.

We have been staying at The Hume for a number of years every winter. We always used to book a basic room and it always included breakfast. This time I chose a bigger more expensive room. How disappointing the room had frosted glass so no view and when opened the window to get some fresh air the reason for the frosted window became apparent the room looked into the machinery area, which was extremely noisy.
So after a terrible nights sleep we went down for breakfast and were told it would be extra even though our friends who booked at the same got there’s included. When I queried this they said it was because I booked with Expedia.

Anyway when I mentioned this at checkout I was told it was all my fault and go and argue with Expedia. As for the room apparently if I had of rung them they would have told me that looked on to the machinery shed. I love the Hume and it is my go to place to stay in Nelson everytime. Something that’s worth noting however , your breakfast is not included in this booking with Expedia but it is included if you make the booking directly with the hotel.

this line from the reservation does not fully describe how small the room is. There are two rooms of this size in the hotel and they should be avoided. The only place to sit besides the bars/restaurants is the public lobby with the tour groups. A single person may be OK but two is one too many.

This was a great place to stop. Our only complaint was the lack of on site parking. Although the property did send an email advising us of this, we didnt receive it until we had already checked in. It did create a little stress upon arrival as the hotel is situated on a very busy and extremely hilly street. We were fortunate to find a relatvly close metered parking spot and because we checked in late Saturday evening for our one night stay there was no charge for the street parking.

Only complaint is that the walls of the rooms are EXTREMELY thin, so you can hear people's conversations. Other than that, it is a lovely property with very friendly staff and outstanding restaurants. Great central location, wonderful AC, and comfy beds. The shower had hot water for days!! And the spa was delightful!

We loved our stay at the Hume in Nelson! The hotel is situated in the center of this colorful town. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. Parking was not provided but wasn't a problem as I had anticipated as there is a ramp right next door that is fairly affordable and the hotel comped our parking for 2 nights anyway. Our room was large, comfortable and clean. It's an old hotel in the center of town so anticipated a little street noise, but again this wasn't a problem for us. Everything in the room worked great. We didn't try any of the attached restaurants but it smelled good and the bars looked great. We will definitely stay here again the next time we are in Nelson.
