The main issue was the very strong dog smell in our room. Our stay was during snowy weather, and the room was extremely cold until the portable electric heater had warmed the room up - this took about 5 hours, so I'm glad we didn't check in close to bed time. The shower was an unpredictable dribble that leaked onto the bathroom floor. The kettle was broken so was continuously boiling and the handle was extremely hot, this is of course a safety concern if we had have left it unattended.
I was expecting a slightly rough and ready stay due to the bargain price, but I couldn't overlook or resolve the terrible smell. The hole in the blind was a bit unsettling. On a positive note, the bedding and towels were clean and the parking was convenient. The landlady did try to find another heater for us, which we appreciated, however the heater was broken.

Absolutely appalling, the tiny room smells of damp and is essentially a health risk with mouldy ceilings and one very rusty oil heater. Dimly lit bathroom which again is another risk.
We removed ourselves from the hotel (probably wrong choice of word) and booked ourselves into a hotel in the centre, Wetherspoons Hotel was fabulous.
I raised with Hotels.com who had failed to help with my refund request.

Was booking a stay for June 20 2026. Somehow it booked me in for Oct 31 2025 (the day I was going through the process). I immediately contacted Hotels.com who understood the issue contacted the Hotel but the hotel manager refused to cancel the booking- mean spirit and lacking in understanding what goodwill can do for future business.

No breakfast as advertized on hotels.com. manager daid this problem has been in place for a year. Yep, thats a long while for people to be mis-sold. Manager blamed head office and the agent. Said we needed to pay full.price and then claim back lack of a free breakfast. My advice. Dont book hete simply stay elsewhere. Plus the room had three air fresheners in it and they could not mask the bad drain smell. Shame, as the bed was comfortable and ripon has a lot of charactor

Solo trip with the dog. Very friendly easy check in and cute accommodation in an old stable yard.

When I was shown the room the main light didn't work but I said it didn't matter as the bedside and bathroom lights were fine.

Very convenient with the dog to nip out for a quick pee rather than walking through a hotel.

Car park small but parked ok and felt safe.

I left early for and no one was around yo check out so ended up leaving door unlocked and key inside.

Good value for money.

Room was tiny, bathroom door would not close without a huge shove.

The cups were stained and the shelf they were on was very stained
The people were friendly enough, the bed was comfortable and the night quiet.
There was no food at all on offer which is not clear in booking information.
It was ok for a night but wouldn't want to stay longer and probably wouldn’t stay there again.

There was no kitchen - so no food . We were unaware of this until we arrived. Our first stay was comfortable, but our return stay a week later was not so good. Our mattress was obviously upside down so we were lying on springs just under the surface! We didn’t work this out until the morning - staff were very apologetic.
No parking issues. No information about Wi-Fi.

Do not stay here

From the moment you walked in you couldn’t breathe. There are no windows at this property and no ventilation. You could smell the dampness and the mould first and then you could see the mould. There are at least 6 really strong air fresheners too, they don’t mask the mould smell, they just make it worse. The beds are uncomfortable too. But the mould and the ‘tight’ air feeling was probably the worst I’ve ever felt. The whole place was so dirty too, curly black hairs around the shower, dirty floor, just not a good place to stay. I wouldn’t have stayed there if it was for free so that’s saying something, harsh but I’m sorry no. We stayed in the room number 6 and it was the only one that I could see that had no windows so maybe the other rooms are better but that’s beside the point. OH AND let’s not forget the super high skylight was smashed through from the inside and looked like shards of glass were going to fall down any minute so that’s a nice bit of anxiety walking underneath it to get to the corridor everytime.

It is perfectly located for the centre of Ripon and the lady checking us in was lovely. The room itself felt and smelt damp, the beds were not very comfortable and we couldn’t cover the window to make it dark which was an issue when getting our 1 year old to sleep. All that being said we would definitely stay there again because it made visiting Ripon on a tight budget possible and if we hadn’t had our daughter with us none of the above would have been an issue.

Absolutely terrible. I booked this venue on the basis of excellent reviews and I'm either assuming we were given the worst room there or the reviews are fake. Room was filthy, cobwebs over ceiling, filthy bed base, mould spores in shower, dust everywhere and I have taken photos for evidence. The room was absolutely tiny, to the point the phrase big enough to swing a cat is a mockery. I didnt get more than an hours sleep, between the two girls next door giggling and singing until 2am and the extremely poor mattress I got next to no sleep. The walls separating us to other rooms were paper thin, I do appreciate these used to be stables and have been hand made but very poor. The shower door handle came off as I opened it, the smell from the toilet was god awful...I'm guessing I'm not the first to mention as there was an air freshener placed directly next to it on the floor. The TV controller wouldn't work so we had no choice of watching tv, except ITV1. No wi-fi at the property which is a basic these days. I am extremely disappointed and will be seeking a full refund. The bar was completely locked up by the time we returned from dinner at 20:30 however I was advised this may be the case if its quiet. Alarm bells began ringing when locals we spoke to seemed to show sympathy when we said we was staying at the White Horse. The only saving grace was the women at the bar dealing with punters and hotel guests, she was so helpful, friendly and overall just a pleasure to speak to.

We were in room 6, there were no windows in the bedroom or the bathroom, the only natural light came from a small skylight, we were woken up early with the light coming in through said skylight as we were unaware that there was a motorised blind on it, the controls were hidden in the bedside cabinet & we did not find them until the morning - we should have been made aware of this. The furniture was mis match, the stool had a loose top, the light fittings were covered in cobwebs.
The bathroom door did not shut, the extractor fan did not work, the shower cubicle was tiny (There was plenty of room in the bathroom for a decent sized shower cubicle) & the doors did not close properly.
The worst thing was that the towels smelled bad, the only way I can describe it is the dirty oily greasy smell you get from some industrial kitchens, like they had been stored in said kitchen before being put in the room.
The signage on the pub said Bed & Breakfast - there was no breakfast!

A night on a cold winter day with snow

I stayed just for one night on a cold day with snow.
The owners are very friendly, I enjoyed the evening in their pub.
The room was clean with a narrow window blocked by a blind and felt very claustrophobic. The wifi BT open network in the room worked for an hour the longest, then needed re-setting every hour, it was also unsafe to use.
I waited several minutes for hot water, but could not get even warm water in the sink. The towel rail fell down.
I was glad that booked there only for one night.

The hotel was in a good position for Ripon’s attractions ie the cathedral and the old
town with its cafes and eating facilities. The rooms were fresh looking and away from the pub in a separate stable block and were self contained but as the property had just been taken over and the pub itself was being refurbished I can’t comment on the food etc .

I asked 3 times before I received an invoice.
I spoke to a staff member about the fact the toilet didn’t flush properly which wasn’t fixed and meant I only dared wee in it!
Both the cold and hot tap had boiling water coming out of them. I only drink tap water so I asked for bottled water (which I was given) I also bought more.
It was very dark I the corner where the closest and kettle was. I meant I had to use the torch on my phone to make a coffee.
The bed was very soft and as a result my back hurt every morning.
Finally, the room had a smart TV but no internet connection.

The White Horse is a pub no more than 5 minutes walk from the centre of Ripon and the cathedral.

The rooms are converted stables at the back of the pub. The decor is basic and a little tired but if you’re going to book somewhere like this then you mustn’t expect opulence.

The staff were friendly and helpful and I would certainly stay here again on a return trip to Ripon.

Dissapointing stay

On arrival we thought it would be a good place to stay as the courtyard was nice with pretty potted plants that looked well cared for and secure gates but as soon as we opened the door it was very suddenly apparent it wasnt. The room stank of cigarette smoke and overall appearance was shabby. We had to keep the windows open for the entirety of the stay to try and get rid of the smell as it was quite overwhelming at first. The overall cleanliness of the room also left little to be desired.
We looked in the bathroom and was shocked to find it filthy. The toilet was absolutely disgusting with fecal matter in the bowl of the toilet and on the seat. We mentioned this to staff and it was partially cleaned (toilet not shower) but we should not have been given the keys in the state the room was in. Very dissapointed with the stay as previous reviews are good but our experience was far from that.
We actually ended up leaving at 7am and showered at our family's home as the shower was still not clean despite the request and we did not feel happy staying any longer than we had to or using the facilities provided.
We won't be returning which is a shame as we have family in the area and visit regularly and the property was very convenient to where we wanted to be. We also won't recommend to others.
We feel the room was very overpriced for the standard we received.

We arrived to a very pleasant lady. The room was a twin. On entering the room it was cold and the heating wasn’t on.
I asked the lady at the bar and she flicked a switch and said it would be okay later. Later the room was cold. The lady said she would find a heater. After her hunting around she said there was a heater in the wardrobe.
After reading other reviews I realise that this room is never heated and the heater has permanent residence in the wardrobe.
It was late so we accepted the heater. I then found the bathroom door didn’t close and the floor was dirty and cobwebs in the corner ( also previously reported in reviews)
I asked to change room the following morning which was met with a begrudging ‘yes later’ .. later we returned to find our belongings had been packed up and dumped in the stairwell. Not happy I asked the manager about this. He failed to show any hospitality or management skills and blamed the housekeeper. His attitude and inability to accept the faults resulted in a refund and us leaving.
Kitchen cleaning supplies were also storages above the breakfast service hatch.
Thank you to the lady who checked us in though, she was very nice and helpful with the heater issue.
I hope the hotel addresses the issues reported and that keep coming up in the reviews.

4-night stay in a Stables Court room, slightly separate to the main building. The room (Room 9), which was housed in a square courtyard filled with baskets of flowers, was clean and tidy with the comfiest of beds. Other places provide you with 1 weedy pillow each - not here - I had 6 pillows and cushions all to myself, for a blissful night's sleep.

The White Horse is ideally situated for the pretty city centre, being 5 minutes walk away, but also 10 minutes drive in the other direction and you're into the lush Yorkshire countryside. Parking onsite is a bit of a squeeze, but the quiet streets surrounding the property were freely available and I had no qualms leaving my car there, overnight.
Breakfast may appear to be limited compared to other properties, but who needs croissants and endless varieties of exotic fruits. There were boxed cereals, fresh orange juice, tea/coffee, toast and the heartiest of cooked-to-order English breakfasts. Again, the golden touch was there - Other properties give you one butter sachet, and you have to carefully divide that over 4 slices of toast. Not here - a bowl full of butter portions, so I could lather the toast to my heart's content.
All in all, I had a cracking little stay, and will definitely use The White Horse again, if I'm in the area, and you should too.

White Horse Ripon.

Stayed in one of the courtyard rooms as part of a group of friends. Good base for touring, and decent breakfast in the mornings, served by a lovely lady. Room and bathroom were adequate in size, with the usual amenities such as kettle, tea/coffee/biscuits, shampoo and shower gel. I was slightly surprised to find a chair in the wardrobe. The bed had feather pillows and cushions, which is unusual, and although I'd prefer non-allergenic ones I decided to live with them. The air freshener in the room was very pungent but the staff were happy to remove it.
The courtyard area is really pretty, with flower beds and bistro-style tables and chairs for guests.
The bed looked quite old, but was still comfy to sleep on. Also, there was quite a bit of noise from the pub late on, which I thought was karaoke but may have just been very happy guests having a sing-song.
The hotel has quite a small car park for the number of rooms, but on-street parking might be available in the residential streets nearby (not checked).
In summary, a fair place to use as a base for a few days.

The Courtyard at the White Horse. Ripon

The courtyard room was especially suited to my disability. Stunning display of baskets and plants with table n chairs to have a chill out time. It was light and fresh and clean. A few cobwebs but hey! we’re in the countryside. Spiders need somewhere to live. The shower cubicle was a little tired. But fine. The hot water problem was due to a burst main in the Main Street. Unavoidable hiccup. Beds super comfy. Lots of refreshments. Staff very happy and pleasant and nothing too much trouble whatever we requested. Breakfast was served with a smile and extensive extras. Even For our pet. Thanks for a surprising little break.

I stayed for three nights at The White Horse. My room was in the stables block. It would be lovely to sit outside in the summertime but not in February! It was quiet, warm, and comfortable. The bed was super comfy. Tea and coffee-making facilities were provided. The full English breakfast was freshly cooked by Dave and was delicious.
The White Horse is the perfect location for exploring Ripon, the cathedral and museums being within 10 minutes walk. The hornblower at the obelisk at 9pm each evening is not to be missed!
I definitely recommend The White Horse.

Cosy and quiet

Had a very comfortable stay here in one of the converted stables. Great service from the staff on site, though the OYO people are impossible to get hold of (I broke down en route and was panicking as I was going to miss the 9pm final check in, tried the numbers provided and just got a “answers can be found on our website” message from OYO - not helpful when I actually need to speak to someone on site; the internet provided me a number for the bar, where the lady I spoke to assured me I could still be checked in as long as the bar is open, which it still was when I eventually arrived just before midnight, though this time may vary day to day). The place itself is lovely, as were the actual on site staff I spoke with. The room was comfortable and quiet, and free on site parking was very helpful. Only thing to be aware of if you’re sensitive to light whilst sleeping is to bring something to cover the glazed pane in the door, no problem at all for me, but I know my other half would have struggled if he’d been with me. Breakfast smelled amazing, though after my car troubles I got up too late to try it, but check it out if you can. Would definitely stay again. My thanks to the on site staff for your help.

What a wonderful place to stay

What a beautiful place to stay.
I stayed in the courtyard and have never stayed in such a homely, quiet and relaxed place.
Most comfortable bed with quality linen and duck feather pillows.
The room is so cute and cosy and certainty didnt want to leave.
My hosts were so kind and welcoming from an early check in to arranging a lift into Thirsk as there were no buses running.
Breakfast was also superb and shall definitely return

As a regular visitor to Ripon on a weekly basis, usually in a campervan, this b n b is ideal. The room whilst small has everything that you need, is very clean and tidy. The private courtyard would be lovely to sit outside during the summer months. Full English breakfast included in price, which was delicious. Ideal location right in the city center within a short walk to the shops, many bars and attractions. Landlord welcoming and friendly. What more could you want..will stay again

A beacon on a foggy day!

A good stay! Even so the weather let us down! The rooms were clean, warm and quite in there own courtyard! Bar prices were reasonable! Breakfast was a delight tasty and nicely presented which set us up for the day! Don’t be deterred on arrival this is a good place to stay!

The room was large, very clean and quiet and we loved being able to come and go without having to walk through the pub

I was told that I could not check in as they had had a plumbing emergency that morning. So I was stranded in a city on a Saturday where no rooms were available anywhere. Totally ruined a reunion weekend. And I still have not been contacted by OYO?

We stayed for 2 nights in the court yard rooms and we found them spacious , clean and comfortable. The hotel and staff were very friendly and attentive to our needs and nothing was a bother. The full English breakfast was plentiful and very nice. We would definitley stay again as the location to town centre and attractions was only a short walk away from the hotel itself. All in all a very nice break.

We booked this hotel considering several factors, one of which was the hotel reviews so, I am annoyed that our experience was at odds with those reviews.

We would not have booked this hotel had we known about the issues we came across.

The room was in what appeared to be an old stable block set apart from the hotel, in itself no problem.

But the main issue was the dreadful smell emanating from the bathroom compounded by very little ventilation even with the bedroom window open.

Also, there was a deep depression on the bathroom floor. I suspect that there was a broken floorboard beneath the vinyl floor covering.

The bedside light by one of the beds was inoperable, even when we managed to retrieve the switch from behind the headboard. The wardrobe door did not shut properly.

The breakfast was good but served in the run-down bar area on tables that had a sticky residue.

We were booked in for four nights but left after three.

Top spot, super friendly team

Great place to stay, super friendly and accommodating staff who went over and above. We were delayed in arriving - but they waited to greet and make us comfortable and allowed us to park the car next day. Lovely breakfast in the morning - highly recommend.

The best thing is the room was clean, spacious, lots of cupboard space, teas/coffees and warm.
Disappointing, service center you call for help went round in circles saying go to the web and i was outside trying to find how to get in and where to park, so i picked the option wanting to book and within a few seconds was speaking to someone. He was not happy i was not booking a room and tried to fob me off. finally got through the manager who came to the front door and gave me a key. wifi not secure. Bathroom terrible - clean but stained and holes around the shower (but was warm). Bed was the most uncomfortable i have had in almost a year. Price was low but the same as a premierinn in the next town.
