The Old Swan Hotel is a prestigious hotel in the heart of Harrogate, within walking distance of local attractions including the Harrogate International Centre, Valley gardens, local bars and restaurants. The Old Swan Hotel is famed as the hiding place for Agatha Christie during her disappearance in 1926, and was the location of the film 'Agatha' starring Dustin Hoffman and Vanessa Redgrave in 1977.

The hotel boasts 136 well appointed, contemporary styled bedrooms including singles, twins, doubles, executive upgrades, suites, four-poster suites; all with stylish en-suite bathrooms. Free car parking for up to 200 cars.

There were positives and negatives to our stay. The public areas and bar area were welcoming, clean and well appointed. Staff were friendly and polite.
While our room was clean and comfortable it was very much in need of a refurb. The bathroom was clean and functional but very tatty in places, especially the window area.
Toiletries were provided, but as only product was a combined hand wash, body wash and shampoo they couldn’t be described as luxurious.
Our main disappointment was when we were woken before 8am as workman were working on the unoccupied rooms along our corridor. This included removing the furniture into the corridor and taking up the carpets.
We were not informed at check-in that the work was planned.
The hotel is in a quiet area of Harrogate just 5 minutes walk into the town centre.
Ample onsite parking although there is a £12/night charge.

Inside the lift is disgusting sadly. 50 years ago I lived and worked at the old swan as a silver service waitress. You have downgraded the service so is now 4 star. That was disappointing to witness. Breakfast was also a let down. No meats, no porridge, black pudding tasteless, eggs over cooked, croissants cold. Sadly I have to say breakfast was only just 3 star. Before arrival I rang to arrange to extend one of my rooms for one night. Reception said they would arrange it when we got there. Spoke with reception day after arrival and was told they could not extend. That left us with trying to find another hotel for my daughter. Finally I was shocked to see myself sharing the lift with decorators with paint all over their clothes. When I worked there such a thing was unheard of as the staff lift is sufficient for co tractors and staff.

Our hotel stay was lovely. The staff were kind and efficient. Our room was small but it had everything you needed and was clean and tidy. I was surprised with the room as I wasn’t too sure on the pictures used on Expedia but actually it excelled my expectation. The breakfast was worth adding on. The hotel is in a quieter spot but walkable to all restaurants and bars. Parking was limited so you had to make sure you could get a space. Overall great stay

I booked a small double room. Which was a three-quarter bed with one pillow! But I slept well. Arrived very late into the evening so I went straight to bed.

Lovely clean bathroom. No noise.

I only had toast and cereal from the breakfast buffet, hence four stars. I didn't see the hot buffet.

I had a really lovely stay here! The hotel was very clean and comfortable, even with the cheapest room option, which honestly surprised me in a good way. The reception service was fantastic — Jay at reception was incredibly helpful, joyful and welcoming, and really made my stay feel easy and stress-free. The room was tired, looked a bit grimy. The walls must have been paper thin, as I was woken by steady bonking for a good hour at silly o'clock. If it wasn't so annoying, I would have been quite envious of their stamina! I couldn't adjust the shower head and didn't fancy drowning, so I had a wash down before bed. I found the extra pillow (good), but unlike the rest of the hotel, my room was chilly, the duvet thin and no additional blanket. There was a bottle of mineral water, but it looked like the lid had been chewed by someone trying to open it, so I got a jug of tap water with ice from the restaurant when I went down to dinner. To start I was the only diner, all the tables were laid for breakfast, except for a couple on the left by the radiators. A second couple came in for dinner later. Good points, Lanson by the glass, but the menu was unimaginative and food average. I had visited before, with my husband for a family reunion in the Summer. On that occasion we had a suite and the experience was very, very different. I didn't bother with breakfast, although I had paid for it. Considering how much I was looking forward to returning, albeit on my own as a single female traveller, I was thoroughly disappointed. Room charges for 1 starter and 1 main at dinner, 1 night parking and two drinks (one bar and 1 with dinner) was £66. Be aware, they apply 10% gratuity to everything including drinks and bar is card only. Back to the Crowne Plaza next time I travel there solo.

Traditional hotel in a very convenient location. Staff extremely helpful. Went out of their way to be accommodating. The only downside was, our room was exceptionally hot. We could not turn off the radiator so staff gave us a fan to cool the room overnight. They did offer to change our room but we had already unpacked. I also think some nicer complimentary toiletries would be a nice touch. Tee, coffee, water all provided in the room.

If you want a sanitised place with no character then don't stay here! only slight issue was breakfast, things ran out quickly and weren’t always replenished even with an hour of over of breakfast dining to gogo.

Was staying for eight nights, and was very happy with the room and the facilities.

The staff were generally excellent and very helpful, including the housekeeping staff,and the only exception to this was the man who checked me in on arrival.

Not as much as a word of welcome,or a smile, or indeed eye contact of any kind. And most certainly not interested in any form of conversation other than moving forward with the check-in procedure.

His only interest seemed to be in getting the form signed, and charging me £96 extra for car parking during my stay.

On that subject, the car park charges are extortionate in my opinion, and the overflow car park to the rear is quite isolated and surrounded by trees. It certainly is not somewhere that I would be happy leaving my car.

I encountered the same check-in man a few nights into my stay, when I return late at night, and there was only him and I in the foyer. But again he didn’t as much as look up from his desk,or greet me in anyway as I entered, or stood about waiting on the very slow lift.

As I say, the other staff I had dealings with were very welcoming and polite, but I just felt this particular employee needs a customer care course.

Overall, my stay was very pleasant indeed, and I would not hesitate to recommend the hotel, or to return here in the future.

I also felt that the room rate for the period I was there was very reasonable.

It is an older style Hotel, but I did not feel it was in any way rundown or tired.

Terrible damp and mould smells - can still taste that in the back of my throat a week later and we only spent 5 minutes in there before leaving for another hotel. Room looked like it was furnished from a bad charity shop. The most dissappointing thing is that this hotel actually thought it was ok to put people in this room in the first place. We had booked months earlier so they have no excuse. Be very careful with this hotel, because they advertise that the rooms are refurbished, but then they try and put you somewhere that is a total health hazard. Disappointingly, they only refunded just over 50% of the cost (wish we hadn't prepaid). I'm just pleased we got out straight away.

Nice location in Harrogate and good sized room and bathroom. Could do with new windows and extractor fan in the bathroom. Drinks and meal a bit on the expensive side. + Carpark on site also a bit pricey but a least you're not having to worry about street parking. Overall a good 6 day break.

We have stayed here before and had no issues. This time we had a few problems: the radiators did not work, the bathroom was extremely tight and the sink would not fill; it kept running away. The toilet moved when it was sat on. Additionally the water bottle in the room had already been opened! Very disappointing visit
