Restful and Peaceful stopping place

This hotel was a very useful place for our stay, one downside was the extra we paid for breakfast (£11 each). We found a PH nearby that served all-day breakfast at an affordable price. The room size and its amenties was good. Glass shower door of our ensuite was stiff to close and felt we we going to break it each time we used it.
Otherwise, everything else was okay.

Disappointing stay needs much improvement

Very outdated hotel, needs a lot of attention!
Wasn’t clean with the counters and remote control sticky !! 😵‍💫

Very loud guests, and hallways are used as a running track for people !

The lift mechanics were very loud when In use making it hard to sleep especially on the top floor as people come and go !

Guests not wearing masks (when now mandatory) and they weren’t asked to do so either …

Really disappointed in the hotel given it’s brand and any I have stayed At before have been great this one was far from decent - stay at a premier inn ! Better value and cleanliness !! And welcoming !

Terrible stay, booking screwed up, rooms allocated to two guests at same time, room leaking water from the ceiling, toilet not flushing and bathroom dirty. Other than that is was lovely.......staff tried to sort all issues out but despite their friendly nature you can't polish a turd and this hotel desperately needs refurbishment.

Room and corridor filled with mold

This is one of the worst experience of a hotel that I've had for a long time. My wife couldn't breath due to the overly strong smell of mold in the room, it was overpowering. We got another room, it did not have the same terrible smell of mold, but it was also mot a pleasant one either.
Even the pictures along the corridor was filked with damp and mold, unbelievable.

Needs refurbishment.

Stayed in Room 422. Bed was comfortable and slept well until the fire alarm went off at 5.30am!!!
Rest of furniture in the room was very dated and scuffed. Lamps in room all lose and may be a risk of falling off. Shower was absolutely terrible and dribbled out at very low pressure and if you had a bath it would take ages to fill it.... so didn’t bother. Toilet wouldn’t flush properly. Something was clearly wrong with plumbing as each time you turned on hot taps lots of noise and then water would spit out and then reduce to a trickle.

Booking in and checking out was nice and quick. Staff were polite.

It’s not a hotel I would stay in again as it’s so dated and clearly needs a refurbishment.

Cleanliness is an issue here.

Room was not well maintained with broken light switch and gaffa tape on the heat towel rail securing the electrical wiring. Broken shower head and also spiderwebs in the mens changing room in the Spa area.

Had to sift through the plates and bowls during breakfast as majority of them were dirty - some filthy. Cups also with some having the distinctive \"coffee ring\" on the inside. Leads me to believe the dishwasher is not very good and the staff don't check or clean plates/ tableware. Cooked breakfast was (once I found a clean plate). Not going to talk about the cold breakfast..

Also booked for a family room (1 doible, 2 singles) and got only a double bed with a single fold out bed. Not impressed. Although was told by Staff that This is Hotels.com/ fault as they do not have such a room?

Anyway, not going to blame the reception staff - not theif fault and they were very helpful and tried to resolve the issue as best they could.

Was a bit apprehensive after reading cleanliness related poor reviews. Our room was clean once we got in ( had to try a couple of cards before being let in by someone with a master key). Bar is charming. Staff friendly and the recommendation for a nearby Italian restaurant was excellent.

What a shambolic unorganised pxxs up.in a brewery both the hotel company and hotels .com run. It was impossible for me to speak to anyone for a whole week prior to my visit, either from the hotel company or hotels .com . Their customer service is non existent and their contact numbers a total waste of time. I was visiting Leeds to see a girlfriend who had to cancel due to a client of hers being infected with Covid 19 , my attempts to speak to someone and cancel my booking where unbelievable, I tried for a week to contact both the hotel and hotels.com to no avail. I shall never use either of these companies ever again

Cleanliness in room not great. Cup left over from previous visitors covered with coffee. Our room was not attended to. Only small double bed as opposed to King size. Privacy appalling! We could hear everything in the next rooms. We could see close into our neighbors' rooms. Our room was adjacent to public space. Shower not high enough up on wall.

Just A Roof Over Our Heads, And Barely That

We were staying for a wedding at another nearby venue. I attempted to contact the hotel about early check in ahead of time, but got no response.

When we arrived parking was plentiful and reception were helpful and took our bags and held them safely until we arrived back to check in later that night.

On getting to the room it was shabby and run down. There were holes in the ceiling (from previous light fittings or similar), dead bugs in the bathroom and excrement left in the toilet. The window was open so the room was very cold. Despite turning off all taps there was the constant sound of dripping water from the bathroom pipes, and loud noises outside meant we did not get a comfortable nights sleep.

On check out I was told there was a 2 pence amount outstanding on the room (despite it being fully paid in advance via Hotels.com). They seemed to think they were doing me a favour by not charging this. It took a lot of willpower not to complain there and then, but at that point I just wanted to leave as quickly as possible.

All in all a disappointing experience. We only needed a roof over our heads for a night, and the hotel did provide this; but in reality it was this and not much more.

A tired hotel but great location and staff

Previous reviews refer to the hotel as being dirty, I'm not sure this is necessarily the case, I think it is more that the hotel is starting to look very tired and in need of some TLC. We stay in the dog friendly rooms which perhaps are more worn than others. the location is however great (particularly with a dog) and I cannot fault how friendly the staff were. The breakfast roll and pastry we had were also very good (I had to volunteer to pay for these when I checked out otherwise they would have been FOC).

Friendly staff but needs improvement

Staff friendly, welcoming checking and hotel OK for price. 2 night stay and no attention to my room when I was away during the day meant no bed made, no coffee replenishment. Not fussed about bed but had to go to reception for coffee, sent to bar and they had to scrabble to find some and could only give me 1 milk stick as that's all they had.
Sorry to see breakfast served under a heat lamp in this day and age. Must add to wastage and food quality is poor from this. Possibly they feel this is quickest as near airport but I would rather wait and not have my eggs solidified under a lamp and inedible black pudding turned to ice hockey pucks.
Ate in both nights and was good but each time the order missed out on something which I admit I did not raise as I couldn't be bothered.
Cheap and possibly what you get for the money but next time I'll pay a bit more elsewhere.

From a perspective of running business meetings whilst staying in the hotel, it doesn't tick every box
Staff - brilliant, nothing is too much trouble. Any issue was quickly resolved in my favour
Bedrooms - comfortable and typical of a hotel of its quality
Meeting rooms - dated overall. Overhead projectors are a bonus, nullified to a point by not fitting HDMI connections at the same time, requiring Heath-Robinson jobs to get the cable to my laptop.
Food - pleasant and typical of a hotel of its quality
Internet - for a business focused hotel, appalling. Even the supposedly more robust conference router was unable to handle my early morning internet usage, when I was probably the only person in the hotel using it , rather than the guests router. For business usage a serious upgrade in capability is required

The proposed winter 2021 refurb programme is overdue and hopefully a massive WiFi upgrade ill be part of this.

Also room service not available which would have been good to know on arrival.

Our opinion of the hotel

The hotel in quite old and in my opinion in need of a make over. The room was not very clean and was also dusty. We ate one night in the restaurant, which had a very limited menu and was overpriced. I had fish and chips (not cod) for £15 and my partner had Caesar Salad at £13 (she had to pay £3 extra for the chicken and another £3 for the
Halloumi) over all the staff we very friendly.

Too noisy and hard beds

The stay was awful mainly because of how noisy the guests were meaning that we didn't sleep well both nights that we stayed there. The walls were so thin it felt that people next door were in your room. There was loud singing and partying well past 2am in the morning on both nights. On top of that the beds were particularly hard so not comfortable to sleep in and the cleanliness in the bathroom wasn't without flaws.

Overpriced and in need of a revamp

The room we were given was in desperate need of a revamp. Stains all over the walls, ceiling falling down, lights without a lampshade, stains on the carpet.... i could continue. Possibly one of the worst hotels i've ever stayed in, and I'm a regular in an easy jet hotel.
I had called and asked for an early check in, however when we arrived we were told we wouldn't be able to have a twin for early check in, only a double. I'm not sure of this organisation level, they knew in advance we needed a twin early. Whilst we were happy to pay the £20 fee as we had to get changed, i felt the fee was overpriced, much like the hotel cost.
Breakfast on the plus side had good choice and we enjoyed the fact the hotel bar let us take a bottle of wine to the room. The spa facilities were basic and outdated but enjoyable all the same.

Really a mercure hotel? Tired to say the least!

Hotel is tired but little touches were missing and staff seemed to not care. No toilet roll and dirty toilets in the bar, when staff told they didnt do anything and were standing around. No towels in room on arrival, curtains half falling down, maintenance issues with dripping water all night so we had no sleep. Shame as it could be a good place if someone statted to care, sort this one out mercure not one of your best!

If it’s at budget price then ok but otherwise NO!

So disappointed with this hotel. Old and in need of a refurb I can cope with but to be completely dirty is unacceptable. As soon as I walked in it was obvious that the hotel wasn’t clean. I don’t think the stairs had seen a vacuum cleaner in months. The room was falling to bits and the bathroom was just a joke. I travel a lot for work and I’m away 2 to 3 nights a week and this is by far the worst hotel I’ve seen in a long time. The breakfast was good but even the cutlery wasn’t clean. I picked a mug up and it nearly slipped out of my hand it was that greasy.

I do need to say that in the main the staff were friendly and they tried their best. I picked this hotel for a family stay for a function we were attending near by. I didn’t read the reviews and I wish I had but I picked the hotel based on facilities like pool and gym.

The hotel was not worth the money I paid. If it had been priced at below £80 per night then I could maybe expect the standards.

No room available on arrival despite booking confirmation on Aug 8 and confirmed arrival time from email on Aug 21. Room was made available to us but was without TV controller and lead to TV. Only one set of towels and bathroom tissue box empty. Manager was good and sorted the problems and gave us sustenance on the house after what was a stressful arrival after a long day on the road.We were told that the booking had not been confirmed by Expedia even though they had my name on their system. Altogether a very unsatisfactory experience so much so that we have cancelled our next trip to Hunstanton because we don’t need the hassle again.

Dreadful! Room was extremely tired & grubby. In desparate need of complete revamp. Asked for room with a walk-in shower instead of bath, got given room with lower level wc and washbasin for disabled (at knee height!) Had to kneel down to use the sink! Booked room for two occupants, but room had only one set of towels, and no toiletries. Asked for more towels and toiletries - got told by staff that housekeeping had left, so will have to wait to see if they could find some. Telephone in room had broken disconnected handset, so took it to reception. Response was oh dear! TV had a broken ariel cable, so no TV working. Table and chairs in patio area for room filthy, covered in bird mess, not cleaned since ever! Unusable! Kept awake until 1.00am by the band playing very loudly for the wedding reception being hosted at hotel. was not allowed to book breakfast for 9am, as too busy at that time, got offered 8am or 10am only. I use a CPAP machine overnight, hence need an electricity socket somewhere beside the bed. No socket on bedside wall, so had to use an extension lead plugged in on opposite side of the room with lead trailing to the bedside. Dreadful night's sleep as being disturbed most of the night by noisy guests using the garden area outside our room to continue partying throughout the night then eventually returning from the wedding reception and being noisey in corridors and banging doors. All in all a terrible experience for a planned quiet Friday night. Sheets were clean!

Arrived before book in time and used the leisure facilities until book in time .. water in pool was cold but the attendant advised us of this…returned after mamma Mia concert about 22:30 to go to bed but
Rooms very warm (no air con ) and couldn’t have a window/door open due to wedding guests in the courtyard below and wedding reception disco music very loud in a function room opposite .

In need of a revamp

Hotel was in need of some renovation. Wall paper was coming off walls, carpets were grubby looking. Restaurant was slow but staff did explain there would be a wait as was understaffed. I had to swap my dining chair as it was so badly stained on the seat it looked revolting. Bed was comfy but pillows were hard. The pool was freezing. The best bit about the stay was the breakfast, lovely breads, croissants, lovely fresh fruit and a decent fry up.

Quiet hotel but could do with a renovation

We arrived late at the hotel to be told that they had sold our family room. We were told that someone rang us and was told we were not coming anymore. We never had any phone call! We had to wait about half an hour to wait for them to find us rooms for the night. We got move the next day to a family room which beds were not made properly. One of the single beds which was for one of our children was made very poorly. Springs had came off caused a big dip on the bed.
There was no AC in the rooms so it had to asked for fans. The rooms were tired which definitely could do with some renovation.
The hotel was queit enough to have a decent sleep though so that wasn't too bad.

Friendly staff but the hotel is in a shockingly dated condition. It appears to be completely starved of investment by the Mercure brand. Heavily stained carpets and seating, springs missing off kids beds, spa area barely function-able, litter on grass just mown over. I’m not sure what it says about the ‘Mercure Quality Guarantee’

On arrival at around 17:20 I was told there were no double rooms available, despite me and several others in reception having booked double rooms. I was left waiting in reception for around 40 minutes for a resolution. By this time I had a restaurant reservation, so I had to leave and was unable to shower or change.

I let the reception staff know that I couldn't wait any longer and would return in a couple of hours.

When I returned, now around 20:00, the reception staff were still not sure if the room was ready and it took another 10 minutes for them to go and check the room themselves.

When I got to room, it was clear that the bedsheets had been changed and some towels dropped off, but the room hadn't been cleaned at all. The bathroom was dirty, still had the previous occupants toothpaste on the taps and in the sink, and it looked like someone had used the side of the bath to tie their shoes, with little bits of dirt on and in the bath.

The room itself was long overdue a refresh, the lamps didn't work everything was very worn out, and had it not been so late, I'd have been looking for somewhere else.

The reception staff in the morning were helpful with my invoice, the breakfast was nice although not worth £10 and the parking was convenient.

Enjoyed my stay here but could have been better.

Positives:

Quite nice room, relatively up to date and very clean.
Good swimming pool and spa.
Good location just outside of Leeds.
Friendly staff.
Quite nice hotel grounds.

Negatives:

The exterior of the hotel is statting to look a bit shabby. Could do with a full makeover.
Certain areas within the hotel not quite as clean as they should be.
No draught beer available at the bar throughout our stay. (Told it was a problem with the pumps).
Our room wasn't made up at any time during our 4 night stay, despite leaving the request sign on the door handle every morning. (The cleaners knocked on our door to ask only on the day we were leaving)!
Restaurant was expensive. Didnt use it once because of this.

To sum up, the hotel just about did its job but needs to improve considerably.

Shower power was non existent and temperature was stuck on boiling hot. Although, the bed was comfortable and the balcony in the room was a nice addition. I felt like the whole hotel was just, dated, and needed a good spruce up. Stained carpet in the room and the window nets were hanging down; as in not put up properly. The hotel gym was nice, plenty of kit. The hotel food however was below par; I only ate dinner, breakfast might have been better. The important thing though, the bed. It was good, nothing to rave about but it was good. Overall I feel the hotel just needs some TLC, it has potential to be really really nice.

All in all this is a lovely aged building. Only 2 complaints. The shower 'temperature adjustment' was not effective, resulting in a roasting hot shower, whilst temperatures in the country were reaching tropical levels. My other 'observation' was the veranda. Albeit very welcoming to stand outside after my shower, I had to push my way through spiders webs and the terrace just felt a little neglected.
Other than that, the experience was more than enjoyable. Good value.

Great out of town shopping base

Great out of town base with bus stop right outside (£7 return group ticket....not sure how many can use...as only 2 of us) Hotel is an old building so don't expect perfection, (note the unfinished paint job in the dining room) but we found it very clean & staff were efficient & friendly....breakfast was pretty good too. But...even though we upgraded to a garden view room, we found it pretty basic with only a double size bed. Although the bed was very clean & comfortable (apart from creaking every time either of us moved)& had fabulous pillows, it was just too small. Stayed at many hotels & can't remember the last time we were given a standard double bed.

They cancelled my room at 8:45pm the night before we were due to stay!! We’d booked 2 months before. They offered another hotel 17 miles away!!!!!!!!

The hotel messed up the booking. Parents who required disability friendly room was given to someone else even though the hotel had guaranteed we will get the room. Had booked a total of 4 rooms so I feel the only reason to \"guarantee\" the room was so they can secure a booking of 4 rooms. Spoke to the manager and said \"we messed up but can't do anything about it\".

Requested bath mats for room, but never got them.
Carpets were dirty.

Generally not a good experience.

The room I stayed in was in desperate need of a makeover. The walls were dirty, the floor was coming up and the bathroom was dated. The food in the restaurant was very nice but the service was slow. I didn't look around the grounds so cant comment on them

You get what you pay for I guess. Or should you expect good service at any price? Got a twin room but no towels put out in the bath room. Found one pair (large and small) in a plastic bag at the bottom of the wardrobe. Went to reception and told they would get another set but they didn't arrive. Tea making facilities in the room but no milk supplied so had to ask at reception for those too. The TV remote needed fresh batteries. Went the bar at about 10.30pm to say they cashed-up so could only pay for drinks by going to reception first to pre-authorise a card to pay for them. Trouble was the queue at reception so gave upon that idea. A hotel starting to shut down its bar at 10.30pm seems weird to me and not customer/guest friendly. All these little things just take the edge of an enjoyable stay.

The pool was filthy and seemed to have sand like substances in there which is odd. The pictures online make the pool seem a lot bigger than it was. There was 4 sun loungers in total so nowhere to sit let alone relax once out the pool. The whole hotel needs work doing it's very run down and dirty. No window or fan in the toilet. Service to get extra milk sachets/towels etc to the room took ages. Definitely not worth the price, won't be staying there again.

The hotel itself is ideal for my elderly parents for when they visit Leeds. We did have one issue, as I was trying to reach them in their room as they did not have their mobile phones switched on. I did not know their room number and the hotel refused to put me through due to ' data protection ' .. it was a good job it was not an emergency

Comfortable but in need of an update

We only stayed one night as a quick stop over. Service was great. The check in and check out were very easy. The hotel is very dated. The front could look very nice in its Tudor style but needs a new coat of paint as is the case with the floor we stayed on. We were on the lower ground floor where it felt like I had been transported back to the 80s with the magnolia paint work on the doors. The room itself was on the small side bit comfortable. Bed was comfortable. The shower was a fixed unit and is fine if your under 5ft 9. Being six foot I had to stoop to get under the shower head! There was also a hole in the bath. Not ideal. I'm sure they have some nice rooms we just didn't get one!

You get what you pay for I guess. This isn't what you'd really associate with the Mercure brand usually. The hotel is dated an the moment you step foot in a bedroom it's like you've been transported back in time to the 80s. The beds are entertaining though as they are on wheels and we enjoyed taking it in turns to push each other around the room on it. Bathrooms are same, need a revamp. Service was slow too, when we arrived there must have been a large group of men staying there, they were all checking in together an there was 1 member of staff on the reception desk, took nearly 15 minutes to actually check in. Doubt we'll stay here again.

A little above average but not much

We travel with a wheelchair and a dog, so look for good disabled facilities and tolerance of pets. Good accessible wet room, but with a wash basin so low and small I (non disabled) could hardly brush my teeth, fill kettle etc. Food not outstanding but good pub grub. Staff mostly friendly, with one or two excellent. It was hugely busy with weddings etc., so hard to find a disabled space near the entrance, but plenty of nice dog walks.

Two days in a row our room was not cleaned. On a day our sons were expected at 12.30, to attend a family funeral, we ordered sandwiches for them, at 12.10. Moments before they arrived we were informed that no one was available to make sandwiches because the hotel was busy organizing a conference.
