Our biggest disappointment was the food. Between the lack of variety, no flavor, and then the weird mystery meats (that snack bar hamburger was NOT a hamburger) we were not excited to eat there by day 2. The night we booked one of the restaurants was better, but that didn’t solve the problem the rest of the day. They make you use an app for everything but the WiFi is horrible with the block walls and the activities were not accurate. They tried to tell us we were looking at the wrong resort- we weren’t. They only give you 2 room keys for 4 people and if you lose one it’s an extra 5 bucks. If you lose your bracelet- 10 bucks. The shower head is at about 5’10” height. I fit fine but my husband poked is eye on the corner of it twice. The toilet ran non-stop. The seaweed was not cleared as advertised. The drinks and food around the pool were not cleaned up as often as they needed to be which led to spills and ants. The excursions were good and the animals around the resort were cool. The massages at the spa were good but the pedicure was sub-par. I left with a bad paint job and not fully cured gel polish that I didn’t realize until we got home. The drinks were not good. They didn’t speak English much so you were lucky if you got what you ordered, especially at the pool bar. My son asked for 3 ice waters and got tropical juice?? The bell hops called us a taxi and laughed as they watched my tall husband fold himself into it instead of getting a bigger one. WILL NOT STAY AGAIN.

First getting into playacar always have problems. My wife was coming a few hrs after me, she wasnt on my hotel reservation, and I told the security people. They wrote down her name and said, just tell her to bring the ID. Well, hrs later she came and no, wouldn't let her in, because she needed a code. Well, why wouldn't they say that to me in the beginning? So, finally after 1 hr at the front desk, I finally got the code and sent it to her.
Then, checking in and out, is always a complicated process and always had a long line at the front desk. Room smelled bad, one drawer had looked like someone spilled coffee in it. Food was good though and waiters and waitresses were nice. We wanted to get upgraded to the other wyndham resort, Azteca. That process was surprisingly easy. And Viva Azteca is waaayyy nicer than Maya!! It's a little more expensive but very much worth it. It's like comparing a Super 8 to a Hilton Hotel for only about 50 dollars more per night. And it's still in Playacar, about a 2min drive from Maya. Spend the extra money and stay at Azteca instead. Less lineups, nicer rooms, nicer everything.

We have stayed here multiple times. However, a young girl cut her foot in the pool. nothing was really done to make her stay better. Then someone crapped in the pool so it was shut down for hours. That was day 1. We like it here but come on. Take care of your travelers l.

When getting off the plane in Cancun please avoid people trying to give you a deal at another resort that you are not staying in. They will harass you and try to get you a “good deal” but your resort will offer the same excursions. Viva Maya’s staff was great but a select few were not so great. Checkout kept getting delayed because the system was down. Housekeeping was amazing. The pool entertainment was fun but please less twerking.

Nice hotel. Very clean. Staff works incredibly hard. The roped off area for Wyndham Club (time share) members was a little over the top. We noticed that nobody was a member of that exclusive group and those segregated areas sat unoccupied such as the Private beach area and dining areas. Very weird.

If you’re looking for fun all day everyday this is the place to be. You will find a lot to do here there are a lot of activity throughout the day, shows, and much more. The room was amazing and clean, the staff were very helpful and friendly. This hotel is very close to the beach, they have multiple pools and they also have a kid zone with a mini pool for them. The food and drinks ever great! I would recommend this place to anyone who enjoys a good time!

We loved the resort. Everything was accessible and close enough to walk to in 5 minutes. Rooms were clean and staff were wonderful and helpful. The beach was beautiful and plenty of chairs for everyone.
We loved the food and coffee bar. Our only suggestion would be for more bar staff as the lines were long for drinks in all areas.

Me gustó mucho las instalaciones ya que tienen muchos bares, restaurantes y así pero es importante tener en cuenta que para los restaurantes puedes reservar solo 1 por cada 3 noches que te hospedes, y muchas áreas o cosas como meseros en la playa, etc están reservadas para los que tienen pulseras negra que nunca nos dijeron que se pagaba extra o así, en si todos los meseros muy amables y las personas de entretenimiento también, la playa muy bonita y limpiaban el sargazo a cada rato, si lo recomendaría si quieres unas vacaciones lindas no tan caras y con muchas actividades alrededor del día

One thing to stand out was the kids club my kids enjoyed it a lot. I’ll give it a 10 there. Property a 8 out of 10 . The entertainment team 10 out of 10 . Poor side was only one pool bar and long lines. Front dest staff rude and careless. There was a few fights at night time and almost every night really loud people walking down the hallways.

Nothing like what I expected... the rooms: the air conditioning didn't work properly, and you couldn't adjust the temperature. The bathroom door lock was practically falling off, and I almost got locked in the bathroom. The phone only worked intermittently, the food was the same almost every day, completely bland, and I even got a stomach ache. And as for the friendliness of the staff... some were nice, others not so much. I wouldn't go back!

We had a great vacation during Christmas 2025 at Viva Maya.
Large buffet with lots of different options, and when the buffet was closed they have a kitchen by the pool.
Make sure to make reservations for the A La Carte restaurants right when you arrive for the rest of your stay, you will not get in same day or even 1 day before. The mexican restaurant and staff there were so much fun.
The staff that stood out for us were Jose Luis at Cafe Maya, which has the best coffee, frappes, and smoothies. Luis who worked at adult pool December 27. And the other gentleman I forgot to take his name down, who was working adult pool Dec 25 & 26. He was so patient, quick, nice and respectful.
The adult pool was the best. Zero noise except for the birds. Own bar and bathroom. That is usually the only place you can get a chair as well as the beach was always filled with people putting their towels on it.
The location is very safe as it is a gated community with homes and resorts and golf course. Even going out of the resort it was lovely seeing Playacar and the ruins that are very close, which you can rent bikes for free and get there within minutes.
There was no wifi in the room at all, and when you were in a spot that is populated the wifi stopped working. We were on the 3rd floor (top) if that makes a difference.
Insanely talented shows at 9:30pm each night, was better than our Cirque du Soleil show we went to.
Would absolutely recommend and go to this resort again.

The beach is gorgeous, and the staff is super friendly. But, there’s no cell service or WiFi in your room. The WiFi only works in the common areas. The food in the buffet is never hot, it’s always lukewarm. You have to make reservations at the restaurants, and there aren’t many tables available. The only hot food is the pizza and fries at the snack bar. The evening shows are really fun and entertaining. The 24-hour bar is great, and the bartenders are awesome. I absolutely loved the spa service, it was worth every penny! The whole community is gated and well-secured. We felt safe even walking down 5th Avenue. The beach is breathtaking, and the staff is incredibly friendly. However, there’s a downside: cell service and WiFi are limited to the common areas. The buffet food is consistently lukewarm, and reservations at the restaurants are scarce, leaving you with limited options. The only hot food is pizza and fries at the snack bar.

On the bright side, the evening shows are entertaining and enjoyable. The 24-hour bar is fantastic, with knowledgeable and friendly bartenders. I highly recommend the spa service, which is absolutely worth the price.

The community is gated and well-secured, making us feel safe even walking down 5th Avenue.

Viva Wyndham Maya – Playa del Carmen: Very Disappointing Family Experience

We stayed at Viva Wyndham Maya in Playa del Carmen for 6 nights as a family of three (my husband, our 9-year-old son, and myself), and unfortunately this was one of the most disappointing resort experiences we’ve ever had.

Food & Dining
The food was, quite honestly, inedible. This was by far the worst buffet food we’ve ever experienced at any resort. Selection was limited, repetitive, and poorly prepared. The quality was so bad that my husband and son ended up surviving almost entirely on pizza and fries for the duration of the trip.

Dinner reservations are extremely limited — only one reservation per three days, meaning we were allowed just two reservations for a six-night stay. Unfortunately, the à la carte restaurants were no better than the buffet. The food quality was the same, and the kids’ menus consisted of the same snack-bar style food we were already trying to avoid.

Despite sticking to very basic foods, both my son and husband became sick. My son was vomiting all night upon our return home, and my husband’s stomach has been a mess since the trip.

Food was horrible, and gave me a confirmed bad case of Salmonella Poisoning. Definitely should not show as a 4-star resort. Maybe the amenities they give to members would increase it's ranking, but this was hands-down one of the lowest quality resorts we've ever stayed at in the Cancun area. Ice bucket provided - but nowhere to fill it. No bottled water provided in our rooms. Only had access to their 'purified' water on each floor. Also - our bathroom had no actual wall between it and the bedroom area. I'm sure some appreciate the exposure, but we do not. Will not try another of Wyndam's resorts.

Our day was wonderful due to fabulous dancers and the social entertainment team. They really were all such a highlight. So top-notch, fun, professional, and engaging. Special thanks to Wilbur, Laura, Valentina, Brandon, and Jair for bringing such fun and flair. They learned we were there for my friend’s birthday and they planned an over-the-top celebration for her. She loved it!

The dancers at the nightly shows were wonderful. Carbi, Lori, Fernando, Lucy, Megan, Andryk, and Diego were all so engaging. They danced with us after and were friendly and so skilled and passionate dancers.

The outdoor venue locations were also spectacular. The beach was truly outstanding, and I love the jungle retained in the location. Restaurants were really good as well.

If there’s any room for improvement it would be to deal with the mustiness in some of the rooms- possibly mold. They kindly moved us after we asked.

This was the worst hotel stay of my life.

Checkin in at 11:30 pm, I was met by a man who could only grunt and point. My room was very far away and alone would do is point me in the direction of the path.
It was very complicated and far away from the desk.

Upon waking up, there was no Internet at all. I called the front desk and told him, and his reply was, \"well the Internet is better in the public areas.\" Um so there's none in my room???

I called back and got a woman and had her send a maintenance person who confirmed I had no internet. I called Hotels.com. They called the hotel. They told me to go to the desk for a new room.

So I packed up and went all the way back to the desk. Oh we can't give you a room until 1:30. UGH. I go all the way back. Then MAGICALLY they found an available room. I moved.

This room has no hot water. I tell them at 11 am then go to some appointments and return at 1:30 pm. Still no water. Oh no, there's hot water. The guy fixed it. They lie.

At 2pm I went to the beach. I can't get a beach towel because they never gave me the towel card I have to exchange for a towel. So another trek back to the front desk!

By 6pm a manager shows up who barely speaks English and I think he came to check the hot water which was on, but nobody ever told me so I could then shower.

At 7pm on my Biz zoom, the Internet turned off.

I hate this place and only want to leave the next day.

So I went to guest services to book an airport transfer.
No more room to type.

Our first 2 nights were in a room that was dirty, so humid the floors and bedding were constantly damp and the bath peeling, we asked to move and was told the hotel was full, the next morning we went back and said totally not happy, the couch was stained badly, we was on 2nd floor with a baby and no elevator and the general state of the room meant we was unhappy, again told they was full but could move us the next day, (our 3rd day). We moved, location was great, room was generally better and more modern and clean, then we got sick, between 2 adults we got extreme sickness and diarrhea 3 times, im pregnant too. We avoided fresh produce and ice for the rest of our stay, buffet food was nice 2 evenings out of our 9 nights and one night we ate at the Mexican restaurant which was nice. Then the drains in our bathroom started to smell and got so bad we dreaded entering the room as was always worse upon first entry. Guest services called the day before we left and asked how our stay was and when we attempted to tell them there wasn't an actual care and just informed us they would state once we moved rooms things improved.
Entertainment is the same group of young adults day after day, nothing really cultural or authentic for Mexico. Having stayed in other resorts and having the best time, this hotel is a HARD NO.
Reviews on this place helped us pick this hotel but we absolutely did not have the same experience the other reviews are putting out there.

Let me start off by saying we are members, we pay monthly to get VIP services on our trip when we travel. We purchased this back in 2024 & have had such a HORRIBLE time trying to book a trip because they never have rooms available. We booked this time via Expedia & when we arrived we asked if we could still get our VIP services. The front desk lady checking us in said no & we made a comment about cancelling our membership. She walked off to talk to the manager & told him that we are “supposedly members” and that we wanted vip services, which then he replied “well they can’t they can talk to vip services but they’ll tell them no” in a very condescending way. Besides this interaction with the annoying front desk people, the hotel was nice. Rooms were always clean, food was always good & the waiter service was over the top. Would stay here again but honestly, the front desk manager & check in lady was enough to not go back.

This is our 2nd time staying at this beautiful resort, we loved our pool side waiter Antonio he was so attentive great hospitality great person to communicate, he was simply awesome and welcoming since day 1. The buffet was awesome, our second experience is making us plan a third trip back to Viva Maya!

We always enjoy our stay at Viva Wyndham. This is a wonderful resort with a beautiful beach. Staff are friendly and resort is very clean. Walkable to 5th avenue. Nice market area across the street. Good food, great drinks and nice restaurants. We have visited this resort every year for over a decade now and noted some improvements over the past couple of years. We were very pleased to have the beach a no smoking and no eating area. It would be nice if something could be done about the locals selling their products on the beach. While trying to rest and relax I find it frustrating to have someone walking through the area loudly peddling their product/service. That is the only complaint that I have. Overall a wonderful place to stay.

Our stay way great! The staff was amazing! Our server Antonio kept the drinks coming!! He was accommodating and very nice!

We mistakenly lost our pool towel card and replacement was $20! Bit steep after the price we paid for the week stay.

Nice hotel, great beach (better than in other hotels around) but a problem with Internet. Very weak in the room.
Need to go to lobby. However, if you need to make online presentation or online video talk, it is too noisy in the lobby. Cafeteria is also possible for internet but the internet connection is weaker there, I lost the connection twice.
