Disappointing Stay at Rock and Reef – False Advertising and Major Inconveniences

I booked Rock and Reef expecting a modern, renovated room based on the sleek photos on their website and booking platforms. What I got was the complete opposite: a tired, outdated room that clearly hasn’t been touched in years.
• Room condition: an ancient aircon unit that wheezed like it was on life support.
• Linens: Towels and bedsheets were old, faded, and felt like they’d been in service since the 90s.
• Misleading photos: The “modern” room in the ads doesn’t exist. My room looked nothing like the renovated version advertised.
Location hassle: The resort is perched on a cliff, which sounds romantic until you have to haul luggage down a steep, uneven path. They offer porter service with a fee.
The final straw – morning power outage:
At sunrise, the power cut out and never came back. No electricity = no aircon (room turned into a sauna), no running water for showering or even brushing teeth. With an old AC unit that takes ages to cool, the room was unbearable. We checked out hours early just to escape.
The only saving grace: The food was genuinely excellent—fresh, flavorful, and the one thing they got right.
The direct view to ocean was great too.
Verdict: Rock and Reef is coasting on pretty photos and maybe great location for surfer. Everything else—facilities and basic amenities—feels neglected.

The hotel is very picturesque but it said no check in after 7:00pm so I called to the number listed and a message in French answered. I tried WhatsApp and no answer but only after I sent a written answer I got a response. There is a treacherous passage very bad lit to get to the property and then endless steps all very high and narrow and different heights, with a cliff with almost no railing on the other side. The room was almost on the rocks, well decorated but no hot water came ever even when I let water run. I do not recommend booking here!!

The views are absolutely stunning from here. The rooms are clean and simple but the view and shared outdoor areas are so beautiful. The food is good as well but small. The staff were amazing! They helped us carry our bags down all the stairs and up!

Beautiful location but room for improvement

This place is in a beautiful location and the staff are all lovely, however there is definitely room for improvement. We arrived in Bali late so the hotel kindly pre-arranged a driver to pick us up from the airport and help us carry our luggage down the steps to our room and check us in. However, following this, the next morning we never received any welcome or information from anyone which would have been useful as we hadn't had a proper check in and therefore had no idea who to speak to about anything. Our room was lovely but could have done with some improvements:
-the aircon wasn't great so it was still very warm at night
- the shower head couldn't be used in its holder so you had to hold it yourself to shower
- our fridge was not working so we let the staff know who just removed it from our room and said nothing more so we didn't have a fridge for our stay and were still charged for the one warm beer we had out of it on arrival. Furthermore, there was no sign to actually say you had to pay for the drinks in the fridge and their cost
- an information pack would have been useful in the room just to have the WiFi password on, breakfast times, check out times, minibar costs, a number to call/whatsapp if there was any issues etc

Lastly, I booked this place with the understanding it had a pool. I'm not sure the 0.5m deep, 2x2m tub of water could be classed as a pool...

First of all, the staff is friendly and kind.
As for the resort it self, we were a little disappointed. Location wise, it beautiful and right on the beach with incredible views.
What we didn't like was the limited food menu. This is somewhat understandable as they only have 11 rooms, however, tgis resort includes free breakfast (if that's what you call it), when you're paying good money to stay at a resort on the beach and you order the \"American breakfast\" and it comes with one slice of bacon and two eggs and toast - I'd hardly call that American breakfast. Most American breakfast comes with eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, and sausage, so on that note, it was disappointing.
Our room had a beautiful view of the ocean, however, we dealt with insects, cockroach's, and a Tomcat that stung my wife while she was sleeping on our first night, and unfortunately ruined her remaining trip as she seeked medical attention from a doctor.
Lastly, the ocean around the property was actually disgusting, I've never seen so much garbage floating around and on the beach (this is not the fault of the resort) but when you want to go swimming and can't due to the garbage floating near the shore, it makes you even question ever going back to Bali.

This was such a unique place to stay. You have to be ready for the trek to get there but once you do, the views are incredible. The place itself is rustic but charming. The staff were scrambling when we arrived because they couldn’t find our reservation but once that was settled, they were good. The food was amazing! We spent hours on our balcony, enjoying the view. Would recommend!

This is one of the coolest and most unique places I have ever stayed. I would love to go back. Bluefinity room is literally as close to the sea as you will ever be able to stay without being in the sea! I loved my mornings and evenings watching the surfers. The hotel food was great, gorgeous breakfasts and dinners so good I didn’t need to eat anywhere else. Do not take a lot of luggage, the staff have to carry it a long way up and down the cliff steps. It’s a great location within Uluwatu, close to all the hottest café spots and HATCH Sunday market.
John was so helpful and I love that when the staff saw you sunbathing, they would automatically bring you a jug of filter water to stay hydrated. Thoughtful little details like this made my stay so memorable. Rock n Reef has a place in my heart forever!

Beautiful, quiet and serene. Stayed 3 nights at Rock and Reef and had a great stay. Place is full of character and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. The food options are very good and there’s enough variety that we were quite happy to eat at the hotel while watching the sunset over the ocean. The room was well appointed and comfortable. My only issue would be that I’d like to see the air conditioner work a little better, thankfully there was a fan in the room to accompany the AC to keep the room comfortable at night. The stairs down to the hotel can be a challenge with luggage so use the call box at the top and get help. It’s within walking distance to some decent nightlife and shopping if you want to go out for the day.

Absolutely stunning, the view was beautiful, the beach is right on your door step, it is a steep climb up to the main road but only takes roughly 1 min to get up the steep stairs, then can either walk to the main road which is only 500m away or get a gojek. Location is great, everything is super close, all the best cafes etc. amazing surf right out front if your a surfer this is a prime location. The stuff were super friendly and accommodating and breakfast was great. Only thing we had an issue with was there was a few big bull ants that were in our room. Also would be great touch if the rooms had a tv.

Right down from Le Cliff we stayed here, worlds apart in terms of experience— you felt like family at Rock’nReef. Friendly staff. Supportive helpful management. Though the property is a bit older, it was clean and very well looked after. The staff was always near, refilling pitchers of water and there to assist. Lots of intimate spaces so you could eat in isolation or hAng in a chaise lounge. Paddle boards and kayaks were available for free. Staff assisted with luggage up the 90 or so stairs since they are below cliff on beach. Rooms were also private with balconies and were quiet. Though menu is limited—they had Great food! Highly recommend. Frank and I had a great time and loved everything about Rock’n Reef. Suggestions: adding more rough to shower surface or mat since this got slick. Also ceiling fans and misters near chaise lounges would be a big relief to the humidity. Lastly, some bagged snacks like pretzels being available for purchase would gave been fabulous BUT we cannot say enough good about this sweet property!

We spent 5 magical nights at this property and couldn’t rate it higher.
Magical location if you are looking to unwind and decompress.
Breakfast was enjoyable and everything you need and we enjoyed dinner and lunch on a few occasions.
We didn’t have our own transport which may be handy if you are planning on getting out and about but we enjoyed walking to new cafes and restaurants.
Sunsets are amazing from all locations and we enjoyed a few monkey visits which made for some great entertainment.
Staff are welcoming and super helpful.

3 nights in the Big Rock room

Incredible views! We had the 'Big Rock' room and it was beautiful.

Staying at Rock'n Reef means you have the ocean directly on your doorstep. It's an incredible place to stay. I reccommend it.

The driver that RocknReef organised for us for our transfer (which we had to pay extra for) - Wayan - was great! Great service. One of the most comfortable transfers we had when travelling Indonesia. He even carried my big luggage down the very long and steep stairs to RocknReef.

The stairs to get to Rock'n Reef are very steep, uneven, and long - it's a big effort to go up them. We were prepared for it, after reading other reviews. However, they are poorly lit, and don't have railings at times. I would not want to climb down them at night after a night out. Could be improved with further railings and more lighting.

The breakfast was inclulded in our stay. However, there were only 3 options to choose from, and they were small servings.

Food was awful so not leaving the resort wasn’t an option meaning lots of trips up and down the property. Aircon in room didn’t work and signal/wifi dropped out constantly. I can't rate the property high enough. We were met by the owner at the reception and given a complimentary cool drink. Once we were installed in our room which was high up looking out over one of the best surf breaks I have ever seen, we pinched ourselves to make sure that we hadn't died and gone to heaven.
We had every meal at the resort and were very impressed with the quality and reasonable price.
The staff were charming and so friendly, making sure to call us by name.
The steps leading down to the resort were a bit of a challenge but if required a call will bring staff up to help. We didn't need help as we are only in our early 70s.

Staying here was an enjoyable experience for our 3 night stay. The views are unparalleled. I believe other reviews have mentioned, but there is quite a bit of a walk to get there (90 stairs, not accessible). Once you get past it, it is a great visit. I think it's definitely worth it at least once in your life. Would I stay again? Probably not. The AC in the room never got cool enough and it was HOT out. The location is a little inconvenient, but grab bikes were able to pick you up once you got to the end of the steps. The breakfast was pretty good! We also had a couple lunches there that were great. The biggest plus was the service of the staff. I was overall happy with that.

The property was extremely unique! If you're looking for a 5* Marriot where you can drive up to the front door and hop in an elevator directly to your room this isn't for you. There is however a once in a lifetime staircase down to the reception / communal area before your private staircase to your unique room with an incredible view! Be sure to red the full description before booking, and also use the phone at the top of the driveway if assistance required with your bags down the steps. Stunning views, a surfer’s idea of paradise - my partner was able to surf just in front of our room! Could not get any closer to the water & amazing falling asleep to the sounds of the waves crashing.

Only thing we found was that the bathrooms were a bit gross, nothing would dry and it smelled of mould. I think more to do with the challenges of the location than poor hygiene though.

It's right next to the ocean. The view is spectacular. The property is in a very private, exclusive location. We can walk to the padang padang beach when it's low tide. Lots of surfers when it's high tide. Sunset is beautiful! Great for couples.

Stop at the shop before you head down as although the hotel has everything you need for obvious reasons there isnt a huge variety. Cant wait to go back

This property’s location is its main and most attractive feature! It’s on the cliff side over looking a gorgeous beach where you can view the amazing sunsets. Our room was a one bedroom and was perfect for my husband and I. The room and property are well kept, very clean and spacious. The staff are exceptional! They are attentive to your needs and extremely friendly. They also make amazing food! The only down side to this property is getting to it. Its got quite the walk down several steep steps which can be difficult if you have large luggages. The staff will help you bring your bags though so don’t try to take them by yourself! As long as you’re careful and take your time the stairs are no problem, but keep this in mind while booking, if you have any mobility issues this will make things very difficult. We would definitely stay at this location again in the future!

We book 1 room through hotels.com and another room through booking.com. Both of the booking are confirmed and paid. However, when we arrived the hotel around 10 PM, the hotel staffs informed us that there was only one room available. !!!!

We asked them what went wrong with our booking? We looked at her notebook and saw two of our bookings. One of them was already checked in with our name. She said there was another guest checked in 3 hours ago and took our reservation!!!

It was dark, rocky, slippery walkway and steps to the hotel. The staffs were unable to help us on anything. She gave us the number of the manager who already went home. We called and chatted with him on Whatsapp. He could only tell us to go to nearby hotel and stay there. He promised to compensate for the mistake

Until now almost 72 hours later, we still have not got the compensation

It was TOTALLY HORRIBLE experience. The management is UNPROFESSIONAL.

Once again NEVER BOOK THIS HOTEL!!!

It was the kind of place that you see only in movies and such. I would give it a 10/10 just for the place, little beautiful villas overlooking the indian ocean. And it is such a distraction away from your daily stress when you see and hear the waves crashing 24/7. Also an excellent place for surfing. The manager Chris is a friendly guy and he’ll even draw maps and such to tell you where to go to certain places. However, to get to the hotel, u need to climb down steep stone stairs which goes down from the hill since the entrance is on the hill. Same goes when you go out of the hospital- multiple stairs and on the side are gorges. So not really a good place if you’re elderly or unfit to go up and down these stony steps. Also when it rains, there are nocturnal insects that come out at night in the room - we had switched on the reading lamp at one night and suddenly woke up to find many antlike insects with wings moving about at the head of the bed, so just make sure to turn off the lights near ur bed so insects won’t disturb. Also it’d be good if there’s a water dispenser at the common area so that guests will be able to take water when we want. Had to go to kitchen to change new water jags and I needed more water for the hot weather. Overall, it’s an amazing experience to walk along the beach when the tide is low.

The place is right on the cliff and the only sound is the waves, no roosters. There are quiet a few stairs down to the hotel so when you are there all you want to do is stay and relax.

One good thing is this property has natural beauty itself, but the access to this property is worse than Jungle Lotus Resort in Ubud. Under the typical humid weather, you need to climb up and down with your traveling bags to get to this property, which seems neverending pain in the butr.

The view is spectacular, there’s no doubt about it but the amenities are too basic. Aircon can’t cool down the large room, bed is uncomfortable, once you get in you can’t leave, the entrance and access itself with steep steps is underwhelming and puts you off, monkeys come into the room/balcony in the morning (which was charming but could be scary to some). We had booked for two nights but eventually left a day early to head back to Seminyak/Canggu because we felt too stuck in the hotel - you can walk on the beach during low tide, but have no where else to go and can only eat the same food (though tasty, was limited). We did spend a good 5 hours enjoying the view, which was spectacular. But after a while we wanted variety in food and a good massage which was not available from this place or in the vicinity. The manager and the staff were wonderful though, made us feel very welcome and when they heard we were going to leave, persuaded us to stay and enjoy the hotel for as long as we liked (since we had already paid for the room). Highly recommend if you want to surf and do nothing else or feel no need to leave the resort.

Wow - Rock n Reef is amazing!

We stayed 2 nights in Rock n Reef but wish we had more time there, what a gem of a place. The location is stunning as the hotel is carved into the cliff face so you have uninterrupted views out into the Indian Ocean, the perfect spot to surf, or just sit back and watch the surfers catch waves all day. The sunsets are spectacular, sit back on a beanbag, grab a Bintang and watch the greatest show on earth. The staff are friendly and will get you anything you need, we ate dinner there on the first night which was delicious, and the daily breakfast was yum too.

The property itself is beautiful. The staff was not great - especially considering that this accommodation is not cheap. When we checked in, the phone you’re supposed to use to call the “front desk” (a window in the kitchen) was broken so our driver helped us carry our bags down the ~hundred steep stairs. The woman who checked us in wasn’t apologetic. At another point, we went to order drinks from the kitchen and one of the women stared at us while she picked her nose. Finally, at one point I asked the manager (Christoph) about an elevator nearby (I’m admittedly a bit paranoid and was nervous about my boyfriend carrying his surfboard down the steep cliff steps) and Christoph asked me to “please don’t be lazy.” At another point he asked us why we had brought such a big bag with us in a very judging manner (I had been living in bali for 2 months and needed to bring science materials with me for studying, which was none of his business). Anyways, beautiful views and a great location, but don’t expect much from the staff.

Beautiful location. The room was a bit run down but tolerable for the location! Watch out for the local taxi mafia-they will charge you insane prices and stop you from ridesharing app use. Overall, highly recommend for anyone looking for a gorgeous isolated beach experience!

Having stayed in a variety of resorts and boutique hotels around the world, I found the Rock n Reef to be one of my favourites. It’s rustic and secluded nature is very romantic and whimsical of a postcard island retreat. Although the short trek down a steep staircase on the side of a cliff was a surprise, what we found was nothing short of spectacular. Pedang pedang and impossibles at your doorstep, a reef teeming with activity, wonderful staff always ready to help, beautiful food, and serenity in the beautiful villas and gardens surrounding them. We will be back, thankyou to Cristoff and the team for a lovely time to redeem our time in Bali. This place was easily the highlight of our whole trip 😀

Yes, absolutely but watch your step!

My husband and I came to stay in Uluwatu for a night before heading to Gili Air. This hotel was ADORABLE! The view from our bedroom balcony was unparalleled... however, I must caution you that this is not a hotel for those with any physical limitations (or a penchant for overpacking) as there is a lengthy trip down steep stairs (with no handrail). Our driver (booked through the hotel) did help us with our luggage but my husband still carried a suitcase and I had a smaller bag. It was grueling but WORTH IT. Best money spent was paying someone to help us carry my bag back up the steps.

An incredible hotel, an incredible experience

If waking up to the waves is your dream, this is the place for you. Me and my partner spent 4 nights here and loved every minute of it. A real escape from the world. Staying at the Rock'n'Reef is an incredible experience like no other. The room was spacious and clean. The view from the balcony was unreal. Staff were great and helpful and being a small hotel it felt very homely and you get to know the other guests, like a big family. Location was great to experience the surfing lifestyle of Uluwatu. The food was amazing and unbelievably good value for money!

Couldn't recommend this place more and we'll definitely visit again!

At the beginning, still not sure if booked a right hotel, because of the road to hotel, WiFI is not always smooth, no hair dry
After settle down, I felt comfortable, never try peaceful very much
In the next day, we dinner at room with delicious Indonesia food with sound of wave

What a property! The view is tremendous as is the sound of the crashing waves heard through your window, some units are even over the water so that your window opens up to the spray of the sea. The food is quite good and the manager and ladies who run the show are competent and kind. While it’s on a rocky beach you have to swim out about 20-30 yards to have the nice clean water and waves. My only issue was the steps to go down. I’m a fit male in my 30s and the climb down with my bag was terrifying as there aren’t safety rails and some portions of the steps. It’s also kind of hidden. All that being said, I’d stay there again. Know though this is a place for younger fit people, I wouldn’t send my mother here because the stairs are tough and dangerous. Also, it’s not a leave your worries at the door resort. While the staff is great you do have to look after yourself a bit. Highly recommend for a young couple or somebody trying to escape and disconnect.

Amazing Location A MUST STAY

We came from Seminyak to stay for 2 days and we were not disappointed. The view was out of control. The room was simple and that was part of its charm. It was a 10 minute beach walk from Pidang Pidang beach. The food was so reasonably priced and tasted great. If you stay here you wont leave for the time you are here no need. The stairs to get to the place are steep so not suitable for older people, you kinda need to be fit to get there LOL

The hotel has a stunning location. But as all other people have stated, it is a trek down to the hotel, so be prepared. When I got there, no one picked up the phone to help us bring the luggage down but when I was checking out, they were happy to help me carry my luggage. The hotel is made out of rock and concrete which makes it hard to be the cleanest of places but they do a good job with what they can do. I didn’t have any meals there, other than the breakfast, and that was delicious. The owner Christian was extremely helpful in organizing transport for me when I needed it and the staff was beyond nice and always happy to help with anything I needed or had questions about.

What an unreal spot! Beautifully set into the cliffs overlooking Impossibles, quiet, secure and private.

The staff were friendly and helpful with organising transport and bike hire, Christophe knows his way around the Bukit like the back of his hand and was very helpful with advice about the surf and where to go exploring.

The food is simple, fresh and delicious. Our room (Padang room) was great. We had our own private balcony overlooking the ocean and it’s literally 15 steps to the lagoon. It’s a little rustic so if you’re expecting 5 star comfort, maybe look somewhere else.

The steps up and down the cliff are a bit daunting and you definitely work up a sweat but they are reasonably safe and sturdy. I think if you were unfit or elderly they would be very hard work but for most people they’re no problem.

All in all we had a great few days here and will definitely be back!

Most amazing place I stayed in Bali!

This was the most amazing hotel! Nestled among the large rocks of the stunning Uluwatu coastline, you wake up every morning to the calming sound of the waves. This place has the most stunning views and the most idyllic beach feel to it. The staff was exceptional- the best I encountered in Bali, and overall, staying at Rock n Reef was the highlight of my week+ trip around the whole of Bali. You cannot beat the customer service, views, crystal water, seashell hunting, people, amenities, beautiful rooms, surfing, and peace of this place. I will be back definitely!!!!! Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys nature, serenity, relaxing, good food & vibes.
