I would not recommend Casa Mao due to the 160 step narrow climb to this property. Someone could easily experience a medical episode. Gianfranco suggests using the porter service but he should be providing this 80 euro for two suitcase service complimentary to his guests. Consider staying in the Amalfi town centro or better value in Maiori with only a 5 euro 10 minute ferry ride to Amalfi. Casa Mao advertises as bed and breakfast but doesnt serve breakfast while surrounding properties do. This property seems more interested in profit instead of quality guest service. The rooms themselves are clean and comfortable but poor location and below average service will see fewer guests stay here.

Casa Mao was a big disappointment. The hotel is far up the mountain, requiring around 140 steep steps to reach — not clearly mentioned when booking. We had to pay €30 each way for a luggage handler, and on departure, the receptionist sent our bags down early without telling us there’d be an extra €20 charge. In total, we spent €80 extra just for luggage.
Service was unwelcoming. No free water (every other hotel we stayed at provided some), and they charge €1.50 per bottle. On check-out day, staff banged on our door at 8:30 a.m. and again at 9:50, rushing us even though check-out is 10 a.m.
The power shuts off when you leave the room, including the fridge, and you’re greeted with a long list of rules at check-in, which sets an unpleasant tone.
Between the hidden access issues, extra costs, and rude service, Casa Mao was not worth it. Choose a hotel closer to the port instead.

The owner met us at the port after we arrived by boat. He walked us through town and up the many stairs to our hotel telling us about its rich history. He was super kind and accommodating! The view and outdoor terrace were breathtaking! My favorite place to stay in Amalfi so far 🇮🇹❤️

Thanks to the property manager he supplied me with a video to get to the hotel as it is slightly confusing but wasn’t a problem with the video. The hotel itself is absolutely stunning. Open the windows and see Amalfi and the giant mountains.

This is a home owner residential rental basically. It was located up the hill with lots of twisted alleys. There's no sign for the hotel name. It's very difficult to find. When we arrive at 4pm, the door was closed and nobody in service. We waited 2 hrs in the rain and finally the owner came. The room is OK, but for all the trouble finding and hundred steps up and down, just avoid this listing

Wonderful stay! The owner Gianfranco is a very hospitable and pleasant person, he did everything to ensure that we had a pleasant stay. He provided us with a guide and we were able to easily get to our destination. The room that we rented was quite large, clean and with a very interesting design. The view from the terrace is breathtaking! We want to come back here, and of course we will highly recommend this amazing place to everyone!

Great stay with a very welcoming host (Gianfranco). He personally came down to the ferry docks to help guide us to the hotel as well as he helped carry my luggage. The location is very beautiful, with a terrasse that overlooks Amalfi - great to take in the sights in the morning with some dolci from Pansa! Gianfranco helped us with the reservation for a restaurant as well. It was great to learn about the host's grandfather as well, who was a sculptor in Amalfi, whose sculptures you can see around town and in Atrani as well.
Note that you should be reasonably fit to go up the stairs leading to Casa Mao, as it is in one of the higher locations in Amalfi.

Casa Mao is a little gem tucked into the rabbit warren of side streets in Amalfi. Gianfranco, the charming owner/manager, met us at the ferry terminal and guided us to the location, pointing out landmarks along the way so we could find our way back by ourselves. Very helpful!! Our room was amazing, a two level suite with loft bedroom and a huge terrace overlooking Amalfi and the ocean. Perfect spot for an aperativo while the church bells rang! Very quiet at night and gorgeous sunrises from the terrace. A wonderful stay, highly recommend it!

There are 150-plus steep stone steps one has to climb with lugguage to reach the B and B. Realizing this is true for many of the small hotels in the area, it was strenuous. Giancarlo is a generous and warm host. The property was designed with care and love, and respect for his family history.

Lovely property hidden away but close to everything. Short walk from bus stop or ferry. The video sent on how to get to Casa Mao was extremely helpful as sometime it is hard to find any location in Amalfi, especially if you have never been here before. Our host Gianfranco was extremely helpful and informative. Our room was clean and comfortable. Sitting on the terrace in the evening with a breathtaking view overlooking the city was wonderful way to end the day and breakfast there was a beautiful way to start it. Highly recommend a stay here.

Love our time here at Casa Mao. Spacious & very clean room in the perfect location in Amalfi. The view from the Terrace is one of the most beautiful views we have ever seen, especially at sunset. Loved the history of the place & the decor/meaning behind it all. Keep in mind, it is A LOT of steps to get to this property. So pack light and be prepared. Totally worth it though!

Gianfranco, the owner/caretaker of the property was highly responsive and accommodating with good local recommendations and personal connections around town to help get us into beach clubs/restaurants that online said were at capacity.

Being as objective as possible, I would rate our experience a 3.5 out 5; The owner/manager does his best to service our needs but overall the location of the property and his desire to save on expenses made our short stay less enjoyable. He welcomes his guests at the port but for a reason...There is absolutely no way you would find your room if he was not there to guide you. The ascent to his guesthouse is by far not for the weak of heart. Especially when carrying your bags. It is 150 steps to climb and when you arrive through a myriad of passages you are completely drenched in sweat (especially in hot weather) by the time you get to your room. The rooms are clean and spacious, and the owner tires to make the most to make your stay as enjoyable. However, there was one big problem with his setup...the air conditioning was centrally controlled and those 2 nights we stayed, we could barely feel the cold air in our apartment. I understand the need to control expenses but you could sense his desire to make sure we did not consume unnecessary energy. Open a window, and the energy shuts off to the AC. The recent heat wave in Italy made our nights not too pleasant in Amalfi. The big question is whether we would return and the answer is no. Unfortunately its location and amenities are not recommended for an older couple or traveler. But, if you are a younger traveler with limited budget, it may be considered.

The owner, Gianfranco, was very accommodating and went the extra mile to make our stay at Casa Mao a wonderful time. The guest house itself was lovely - clean, spacious and very well maintained - and the large roof terrace had the most beautiful views of Amalfi. Casa Mao was hard to find initially, but Gianfranco was very helpful getting us and our luggage up the many steps - it is quite a climb but worth it! We would highly recommend Casa Mao if you need somewhere to stay in Amalfi.

Booked Room 1,bi-level, large bed folding bed,1 small balcony 1 large terrace; smoking permitted in the areas. Sweeping view of Amalfi town, sea and dramatic cliffs/ mountains. 2 smart TVs. All in Italian. Flashdrive for movies in the evening? Note room 1 is right next to the foyer/ reception desk/ front door entrance to the hotel. This may be consideration for those seeking privacy! Casa Mao is not attended to 24/7 but it is unproblematic to contact owner via WhatsApp. Cooked breakfast (without license) is not allowed, hence the packaged food. Housekeeping daily but NB., any small stain will be charged to the card details you handover at check-in. And I do mean small! Also pretty sure could be washed in a regular washing machine, however was informed this beige sheet would be taken to the laundrette. I was notified of this only once we had arrived at NAP airport. Left a bad taste after what would have otherwise been a lovely end to a short getaway. What a shame

GiaFronco was a lovely and very accommodating host. Please make sure to have your correct number with your country’s area code. Do not attempt to use google maps to get to this place or you will be walking up the incorrect flights of stairs. Gia will meet you when you arrive and he will then guide you to this beautiful peaceful casa of his. There is not a car that can access directly to the front door and you will indeed have to walk up a lot of stairs. The view from this place is AMAZING. You will not regret. Really really close to the main square. I recommend using “ mydaytrip” service if you want a private driver. Taxi drivers here will rip you off

My stay at Casa Mao was incredible and I loved every second of it! The view from my private balcony was amazing; I could see most of Amalfi Citta and the water! There’s also a rooftop balcony that’s available to everyone for free, which has the same view. The host, Gianfranco, was friendly, nice, and helpful the entire stay. The room was extremely clean, and wonderfully decorated. Unfortunately, the hotel isn’t handicap accessible, as you must climb a series of stairs to get to the hotel. From what I could tell, there are no roads leading to it. Also, be sure to provide a WORKING telephone number when you place your reservation because Gianfranco will contact you using it so he can Meet you upon arrival in Amalfi!!! Overall, I’m 100% happy with my stay and if I ever find myself in Amalfi again, I’ll be sure to spend the night at Casa Mao!

Gianfranco is a great host. He is extremely polite and puts the visitors first. He did a great job of recommending restaurants and taking making everything as easy as possible. The room was spacious and spotless. The breakfast was delicious and had the best view in Amalfi. There are many stairs to climb, but the higher you climb the better the view. I wish we could've stayed for more nights.

Fantastic place to stay if you want to experience Amalfi. This B&B is over 120 steps from the town square but we didn’t mind it at all. Gianfranco was a superb host. Gianfranco was kind to meet us and help take our bags up the steps. The check in was fine and our room was nice, and definitely the best part was the communal roof top terrace. Unfortunately overall I can't give an amazing review.
On our first night here there was a thunderstorm and the power went out once, we waited a while and it eventually came back on. However the power went out for a second time, we waited for about 45 minutes but we were in complete darkness. We thought someone would be in the property or come to make sure we were ok at some point that night but there was nothing. We had no way of contacting anyone. Eventually along with other guests we managed to get some power on as it was getting unsafe. The next day Gianfranco was extremely angry with us and the other guests because we got the power on ourselves. He was shouting and saying we had no respect. From our point of view It was unfair as we are paying guests and there was no one there to help us (no staff are in the property over night which we didn't realise), no instructions of what to do in this sort of situation and it was unsafe to have no power for a long time. We apologised if we caused offence, but we felt awkward from then on and this ruined the rest of our time which was a big shame as it could have been a good stay. Unfortunately we won't be staying here again because of this.
On our first night here there was a thunderstorm and the power went out once, we waited a while and it eventually came back on. However the power went out for a second time, we waited for about 45 minutes but we were in complete darkness. We thought someone would be in the property or come to make sure we were ok at some point that night but there was nothing. We had no way of contacting anyone. Eventually along with other guests we managed to get some power on as it was getting unsafe. The next day Gianfranco was extremely angry with us and the other guests because we got the power on ourselves. He was shouting and saying we had no respect. From our point of view It was unfair as we are paying guests and there was no one there to help us (no staff are in the property over night which we didn't realise), no instructions of what to do in this sort of situation and it was unsafe to have no power for a long time. We apologised if we caused offence, but we felt awkward from then on and this ruined the rest of our time which was a big shame as it could have been a good stay. Unfortunately we won't be staying here again because of this.

Terrace on roof has beautiful view and that’s where they serve breakfast. Have to carry luggage from ferry/bus/cab to hotel. Lots of stairs and you will sweat or You can pay 5-10 EUR per bag to have someone carry for you. This would be the case for over 50% of hotels here though.

The history of the property the design of the property and the views were great. Didnt like walking 150 steps to and from room and the generator was audible on some occasions at night. Positves outwayed negatives though.

We loved our stay at Casa Mao, would want to go back anytime soon for chillaxing! Thanks to Gianfranco, the owner of this amazing place helped us with the luggages and directions up to Casa Mao from the church so we didn't have much struggles. After arrival, I was so stunned by the serene view of Amalfi and the room! The room was seriously super clean, beautifully decorated with his grandfather's artworks. Highly recommend you to stay at this place. Worth the price every penny. Ah, also he prepared us perfect Cappuccino for the breakfast! loved that too :-)
