This part of San Carlos is a low-budget surf camp style area. It's rustic and bohemian. You should make your evaluations in that context. Manglar Lodge is old and a little dark but competent for a night or two. Breakfast was efficient and above average.

A Little Paradise

Ivan and his wife were gracious hosts. The property is well maintained and we loved the location. Breakfast is wonderful. The cheeseburger is the best I've ever had. Food is high quality. The beach is beautiful. Quiet, with few people. Make sure to ask Ivan where to go in the area. He will send you to some great places. Nicco's is a must. Thanks for a great stay!

This was the first time my wife and I had been back since our marriage almost 2 years ago so we were very excited to see our friends (Mafi and Ivan) for the first time as husband and wife at their awesome 4 room boutique hotel.

My wife and I have been coming here for almost 7 years and I must say it was one of the best berried treasures we ever found in San Carlos Panama. This place has become home and the Mafi and Ivan is like visiting family. We enjoy sassy Mafi and Mr. Laid Back Ivan.

We only got to stay one night January 8th to January 9th but it seemed like we were there a month. My wife and I ended up brining our friend as a last minute guest to just swim the day on the beach and when she decided to stay the night with us, Mafi and Ivan charged a very small fee for her to use our extra bed in our room. Our new friend is now in love with Manglar Lodge just as much as my wife and I are.

The food and cocktails like always are delicious and enjoyable. I also got to purchase a lot of new items from their little gift shop like t shirts and cups to take back to America to both my daughter and mom.

April 2024 will be my wife and I second wedding anniversary and we have already booked our Manglar Lodge hotel stay for this special day.

If you are looking for a unique experience that is literally across the street from the beach this is the place.

We stayed here on our last two days of a 16-day trip to Panama. We wanted a quiet place to rest up a little before our return trip home. We did not go wrong by choosing the Manglar Lodge. The staff was very helpful even with the language barrier. The restaurant provided good meals quickly which was a change from some of the other places we visited where it took a while to get food after ordering. My wife enjoyed her conversations with the owners about the area. They have unique souvenirs for purchase which my wife took advantage of.

The staff was outstanding the rooms were nice and clean and the little restaurant downstairs and bar we're pretty good all in all highly recommend this place off the beaten path of well worth it

Ivan even helped us by bringing our ID's and passports when we got stopped at a checkpoint by police and had unfortunately forgotten them! He talked them into only giving us a ticket instead of towing our rental care away! Fun live music on Friday nights! Would stay here again and again!

Both my fiancé and I love Manglar Lodge. It’s a very cute and intimate boutique hotel that just a 2 to 3 minute walk to the beach. The owners Mafi and Alvon are more like family. We enjoy the delicious food dishes that Mafi always surprise us with.

Sorry it took me a year to write this review from my last Manglar Lodge stay. I will be staying their again on January 5, 2021 and wanted to write this one before my next stay.

Similar to the first time I stayed their in 2019 I am still extremely happy with my stay their. I always feel like I’m at home when I visit what I call a, “Diamond In The Rough”.

I love this cute little 4 room hotel that is a stone through away from the beach. If there was not the additional property across the street in front of Manglar, this property would literally be on the beach.

The best part about Manglar is the two owners Mafie and Ivan. They do everything for you from checking you in, making you a delicious cocktail to preparing your meals.

The rooms are clean and cozy with air conditioning and cable tv. The showers are hot. The walk to the beach is literally like 6 minutes and if your an Olympic runner it’s 3 minutes. 😂😂😂

What makes this place so lovely is it’s simplicity. It’s just a taxi 🚖 ride to the little town of San Carlos.

I can’t wait until my next stay in a week. In closing you must try Mafis delicious Rum Chatta cocktail 🍹 that’s like egg knog on steroids 😂😂😂

I also appreciate that Mafi the owner kept me updated with all the Covid rules via WhatsApp while I was still in America. You can’t beat this type of customer service

The property is clean and inviting. It is not right on the beach, but it is tucked away and a short walk to el palmar beach. The food is excellent, but a bit pricey and we waited a very long time for breakfast each day. We found other properties for around $60-65 per night, so we were disappointed that this location was close to $100 per night with taxes. We would stay again!

The property was clean and cozy. It was only a short walk to the beach and restaurants. They didn’t have coffee in the rooms and the restaurant didn’t open till 8:30 am. We had dinner at the lodge, the food was not what you would expect for the price. The music from another place was loud and playing till 2 am. It was good for a one night stay but I would eat and drink somewhere else.

The lodge is just a basic room with a bed, 2 thin bath towels, no hand or wash towels, rusty shower head and an split unit AC that did not have a remote to control. The menu was basic, the access is remote. So in other words, nothing to write home about, which makes me feel that the $88 a night plus tax is too much. We will not return.

I want to first start off by saying that if you are anywhere near San Carlos, you MUST put Manglar Lodge on your To Do list of places to stay.

Both my fiance and I had an amazing time at this lovely 4 room hotel that sits just off the beautiful beach.

We first arrived on Friday, December 28, 2018 and was greeted by the lovely Mafe who is one of the two owners. Our check in went very smoothly. Mafe took the time to tell us all about the San Carlos area that surrounds the beach then she gave us our key and showed us where our room was which was room #1. We were very pleased with the layout of the room and the balcony with the bench on it was a nice plus.

Later that evening we had the pleasure to meet Mafe's husband Ivan. One amazing thing about the Manglar Lodge is that both Mafe and Ivan do pretty much everything at the lodge so you feel like your actually staying at their house instead.

The front desk, bar, and dining room are all in the main building so you definitely won't get loss...He he.

If you want an amazing drink, you must either ask Ivan to make you one of his amazing Pina Coladas or ask Mafe to serve you one of her delicious rum flavored Puncha Crema's that reminded me
of my grandmothers Eggnog with a lot of rum added to it. One word of caution is to drink them very slow. I did not follow that, \"drink slow rule\"and woke up the next day with a major headache...He he he.

I consider Mafe and Ivan friends and look forward to the next visit.

Nice Little Getaway Spot

This small hostel is a lovely little getaway spot. We arrived early before check in time and were treated to some local craft beers in the lounge. Our room was extremely spacious and very clean with a beautiful king size bed. We had dinner in the lounge and enjoyed a generous serving of fish and chips. The menu has great variety and look forward to going back someday to try out the rest of it.

We had stayed here before over the last four years and really enjoyed our stays. It's been a couple of years since we stayed here last and we saw a big change. There isn't a refrigerator or coffee maker in the rooms any more. The internet was very slow and there was a bee hive on the balcony of the first room we were given. They moved us to a different room, which we were glad about. The place is still clean but just not well taken care of.

Location to Beach is excellent.

Rooms are clean with A/C. Ask for a room with a safe and balcony as not all rooms have these features. Communication in English was difficult with some of the staff but we were able to get our questions answered. The beaches are amazing and you can walk them easily at low tide. During high tide walking is extremely difficult. There is a hotel in front of this hotel so there are no beach views; however in the evening you are in a much quieter location.

The property is quaint with a well groomed garden but the neighborhood is dodgy even with the presence of a security guard at night. Our room was a good size with a nice shower/good water pressure and the ability to open the windows which we liked. The carpet however was disgustingly dirty with tons of hair (not ours) stuck to both sides. The room was not cleaned during our twonight stay which surprised us. The breakfast was good but not amazing as people been reporting. I did not like the service however. The three people that served as barely smiled and certainly didnt go the extra mile to make one feel welcome or to provide a bit of customer service one would expect from a hotel. I often saw them sit around and watch TV. The area was quiet but on Saturday night we were woken up at 1am by super loud music which was extremely unpleasant keeping us up for over an hour. I will not return nor recommend.

Suited for really only surfers

The Manglar Hotel is located on a surfing beach, and we aren't surfers. We were really just using it as a place to sleep while we explored mountain communities in the region so we weren't expecting much. Our expectations were fulfilled. During our first night's stay, the A/C froze up and our room became a sauna. We left the hotel at 6 am to find some coffee and came back and the A/C was working again. Same thing happened the next night. Thank goodness we were only staying two nights. The people who worked at the Manglar Lodge seemed nice, but we had little interaction with them. The room was clean, but it did smell of fresh paint. The beach is rocky and not suitable for an evening walk. Won't stay there again.

Has lost its spark

We were early arriving , so understood the room was not ready .Told to return in 1 hour .Which we did .The key was thrust at us and no help offered with bags .All rooms are upstairs .The Internet was terrible in the room and the bath room was dirty and so was the passage to the room . We had to ask for coffee / tea making facilities as not in room as advertised .The owner did try to address all these problems but he really needs to step up and do something about them not just give excuses .Hotel is not manned until 0800 so if you have a problem with no electricity during the night you just have to wait .

Feels like a friend's beach house

We loved staying at Ivan's lodge, just steps away from the beach. The staff was fantastic - very friendly - it felt like you were staying with friends vs. a hotel. The lodge has just a few guest rooms, so there is a very intimate feel. I'd recommend this location especially for people looking to surf - there are rentals and instructors just around the corner and the beach is lovely.

Lovely people running the hotel, no elevator so pack light... Ice available at the bar for free and laundry is washed, dried and folded for $6.50 per load. Restuarant menu is limited but reasonably priced. Very few gluten free options. Pleasant stay. Highly recommended.

We had a terrible experience with this hotel. We travel extensively and have never experienced such disregard for our well being as with this stay. The power went out during the day and stayed out throughout the night. The owner/manager left without any notification to us and no explanation. He locked everything up including a gate to exit from the establishment. We were stranded without water or electricity and had a mag light only. Room was so hot that we couldn't stay. We were able to figure out the lock on the gate. Packed our bags and left. We stayed here because of the trip advisor ratings. Would never recommend this as a place to stay. Much better choices.

Not Fancy, but Well Worth the Price!

This small hotel should be high on your list of you want functional and clean, but not necessarily fancy. It is a small establishment (only 5 Rooms, all of which are upstairs) but very clean with large rooms and comfortable beds, and the restaurant food is excellent. Ivan, the owner, is very warm and welcoming. The staff could use some training in customer service, but they do warm up after awhile. While not directly on the beach, it is just a few steps away. The A/C in our rooms worked very well. Not everything on the menu was available, but every meal we ate there was very good to excellent. We will definitely go back when we come to the area again.

Panama hotel at its VERY best!!

This hotel is in a perfect location located in the Old Town section of Panama. The police are on almost every corner and it is VERY SAFE! It's within 3 blocks of the Presidential Palace, the bay and an outdoor souvenir market. There is at least 100 restaurants within a 10 block area. If you want to experience Panama at it's best, stay at this hotel. The hosts were always available and if they did not know the answer to your questions, they would find someone who did. Prices are reasonable and competitive.

The hotel is close to the beach!if you have a car you can go to other nice beaches as well!the rooms are clean and nice,but not very special!the breakfast is good!we did not try the food in the evening but it looked very good as well,but it is compared to other places in the area a lot more expensive!the hotel staff is everything else but friendly and helpful!everything seems to be too much for them!i think,smiling and being friendly and attentive is a must in this kind of business!anyhow,we are glad that we stayed there only 2 nights and we are not going there again!

Next to the beach, will return

We loved it. Quiet, near the beach, and perfect for our needs. The bus we rode from Panama City took us right down the side road to drop us off near the Lodge, and that was great! We just told the ticket seller and the helper on the bus we needed to go to el Palmar. Walk to the end of that road and take a left. Lodge is easy to find at the end on the left. The room was stifling when we got there and it took a very long time to cool down, but the a/c worked better when we shut off the bathroom. We still needed a fan though so we asked to borrow one and they did find one for us to use. Wifi worked really well after we figured out how to access it. The restaurant menu was a bit limited, and out of things as well, but we made do with the other good food they had. It's off season so maybe that was why. My favorite meal at the restaurant was the corvina sandwich, yum. We only found one other obvious place to eat and that was right on the beach. We walked to the beach either early morn or after 3, the middle of the day was too hot for us. There were quite a few people learning to surf there (surf schools) and the waves could be a bit rough but it was still great out in the water. The Lodge has an outdoor shower which I do recommend using before going to your room after spending time at the beach! We really loved our stay and were reluctant to leave.

This is a clean, comfortable and very reasonably priced small hotel. Staff was wonderful. Food was excellent. The only drawback was that all the guest rooms are upstairs with no elevator. We traveled with my mother, age 77, who had difficulty with the steep stairs.

This hotel is about 10 km from the hustle & bustle of Coronado. There is no elevator, so if you travel with heavy luggage, that is a disadvantage as all the rooms are upstairs. The beach is very rocky. At low tide, the water is very far from the hotel. There is no real ocean view from the hotel.
The rooms are spacious and clean with a decent shower. The WiFi is very spotty and the signal was never above \"low.\"
All in all, a nice hotel for people who travel light and don't need fast internet.

This is a great little hotel. American standard hotel rooms with great walk in tiled shower. The whole property is clean and tidy. Ample parking. The hotel next door (there are 3 hotels in a cluster) has a great pool. Have lunch or dinner around the pool or on the extensive veranda over looking the Pacific Ocean. The restaurant at Manglar Lodge is far superior to others in the area. The desk personnel speak English and are quite helpful with area information. Very close to the beach but no beach or ocean view.

I had a hard time finding this hotel. there are no signs on the intercontinental hwy and it was not on GPS. A call first might help. Look for a tan restaurant on the north side of the hwy across from a small road. Go to end, then left to end - hotel is to the left. The rooms are above the first floor bar/restaurant. The view from the balcony is of the small grounds and parking lot with no beach view. A short walk gets you to the beach. The rooms are equipped with TV, refrig and coffee maker. By the beach

The Manglar Lodge is located right across the way from the beach. We could see the water from the corner of our balcony. There is a restaurant on site with good food and the lodge is small with only 4 units. It is off the highway and the sign for El Palmar, where you turn, is not obvious.

love to travel.

Great place to relax!!!!

Nice hotel,very near a very popular surfing beach. Clean rooms with great hot water showers.
Staff was nice but very reserved, this could be do to my lack of Spanish language.
I will stay anytime I am in the area.

Super Enjoyable, relaxing, people are welcoming and helpful. Rooms very clean, 2 minute walk to beach. The Low & Hide tide is remarkable. Not overpopulated. Great value too. Def head 28KM North El Valle

Relaxed...

Extremely pleased with the choice of this facility. Special mention is due to the chefs whose meals were exemplary, especially considering we are comparing them to restaurants we ate at in the Coronado/San Carlos area. The management and staff (Omar, Ivan et al) were very accommodating and made one feel very much \"at home\". The facility is a tucked away gem in Palmar. Muchas gracias!

So friendly! English speaking and so informative!

Loved the room with original photographs! Very nice and comfortable! Good food and service. Fantastic beach with Black and Tan sand.. Like sand art! Really something unique! Definitely recommend Manglar lodge! You will not be disappointed!

wonderful intimate lodge

we recently stayed at the Mangler Lodge, and loved every minute. the grounds were beautiful, the room was nicely decorated, and the food was fantastic. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Nice break from the chaos of Panama City

Manglar Lodge is a charming Bed and Breakfast about an hour and a half from Panama City. Great rooms, great food, and a very interesting beach which is like having two different beaches depending on the tide. Sand in that area is black, very unique. Excellent for surfing.

I think it was pretty good.

I have nothing to complain, it's a hotel right next to the beach, literally 2 minute-walk. Owner was nice, he does photography so the hotel is full of lively photos. It's an enjoyable place if you are a surfer.

Great place to relax away from the crowds

This is a small friendly hotel with an attentive staff. You are greeted daily by the Pacific surf and Sunshine. You're across the road from the surf beach and there are 3 restaurants within easy walking distance.

Nice little hotel

Very nice little hotel close to the beach. With only four rooms you will never feel it crowded. Although there is no direct access to the beach from the hotel it is a minute, or less, away. The hotel is in very good condition, rooms are spacious and comfortable. The small restaurant offers a very nice selection of dishes, specially seafood. Although we did not have a bad experience , the staff could be a bit more engaging, at the same time you could see them working all day in the up keeping of the hotel. It is very clean, with an ample garden that welcomes you to lay around or take a tanning chair. All in all a very good choice for a stay in this area.

Mangler Lodge was GREAT

the best little Lodge in Panama. Far enough out of PC, close to mountains (Valle de Anton) and on the beach, quiet and off the beaten path. Friendly people, cold beverages, good food. We stayed 2 nights.

Way below my expectations

There is nothing to do there. Beach is awful. No pool. Negotiated with hotel next door to pay to use their pool. No one available at the premises in case of an emergency at night. Attempted to eat breakfast at checkout (8:00 AM) but office/rest were closed. Left the room keys on the bed. Someone showed up when we were leaving, still decided no to have breakfast there assuming it would take time for kitchen setup prior to serving.

MOST CHARMING, QUIET, QUAINT, BEAUTIFULLY MAINTAINED. ALWAYS SOMEONE AROUND SPEAKING ENGLISH SHOULD YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS. WE ATE SEVERAL TIMES AT THE LODGE AND THE FOOD WAS OUTSTANDING, ALWAYS FRESH AND WELL PRESENTED. ONLY ONE WARNING FOR SOFT MATTRESSES LOVERS!!!! BEDS ARE HARD!! WOULD AND MIGHT DEFINITELY GO BACK..WE ENJOYED IVAN (THE OWNER), OMAR AND ALL THE STAFF. A SMALL (4 ROOMS) BUT HIGH QUALITY OPERATION. GOOD JOB IVAN!

Great Place in San Carlos

The staff, especially Omar, were extremely helpful and supportive. The facility is scrupulously clean and well maintained -- including the property. The menu was adequate. The breakfasts, which were not included in the price, were very tasty and the price fair. The bed in our room was hard. So hard that neither of us slept well. The rise in steps up to the bedrooms was uncomfortably high for my wife who has a bad back and some medical issues. The rise issue probably would not apply to younger people or people without medical issues.

Nice Hotel

My wife and I stayed at Manglar Lodge on two occasions during our trip to Panama. It is tucked away off the main street and separated from the weekenders that make the trek
from Panama City to enjoy the beach. We enjoyed the staff and can't say enough about the food served. We never had a meal that wasn't excellent. The staff went out of their way to help route us to the canal area and ultimately to the airport. We would stay again
next time we are in Panama.

close to beach quiet and relaxing

Manglar Lodge was one of the most quaint and relaxing partsw of our trip tp Panama. Very clean, niclely furnished,good food close to the beach and a wonderful staff. Staff very friendly and willing to help in any way possible. Ivan the owner was a great help in arranging transportation from Panama City and back again. He ask about our trip and what we had been doing he made great suggestions and helped make arrangements. A great end to a great trip. Would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to relax and just enjoy the ocean. Or planning a day at El Valle.

The Manglar Lodge was wonderful. The rooms were modern and clean. The owner of the Lodge was very friendly and most helpful with directions and places of interest. He is bilingual which is very helpful. The food was excellent and the staff was very friendly. I would recommend the Manglar Lodge to anyone.
