The single room I had was comfy enough, but you could hear everything. As a solo female traveller, I didn’t feel comfortable with the surrounding area so it might not be ideal for someone needing a quieter or more secure-feeling environment.

The overly aggressive staff at this apparently exclusive club at 8:30 pm on a Tuesday refused me a room that I had prepaid simply because my passport was issued in the same city as they do business. The explanation given was “we are focusing on, and are only accepting internationals, and students.” Upon inquiring if it was indeed a private club, I was pointed towards the door and told law enforcement would be called if I did not leave.
One is left to wonder: at 30 minutes before the desk normally stops taking check-ins, and most websites saying the property wasn’t anywhere near capacity, was there a tour bus expected shortly? Or was it a prejudicial policy based on a previous interaction I had with the management where I revealed I am on disability income?
Prima Facie discrimination based on my lawful source of income would surely be a bad look… But… surely we can’t discriminate based solely on place of origin either. That would mean de facto that this service provider does not acknowledge the rights of the traditional peoples who’s un-ceded territory they operate on.

At this point, I can’t recommend you do or don’t stay at this exclusive international house of this single worst example of a human rights violation I’ve encountered during the worst housing crisis the City of Victoria has faced… ever.
What I can recommend, however, is a that you simply don’t come to this city at all.

Great staff and very clean facilities. The only downside was the uncomfortable pillows (worst ones I've ever had actually) - they were very hard and thick, and I just slept with my head directly on the mattress instead. It would be good if the hostel considered changing them out in the future.

The room was not meant for human stay. The room 14 at this hostel was disgusting Smelled like it has not been cleaned in years? Potatoea and other food were left on the floor. No ventilation and I felt like puking the entire night due to the horrendous smell. I could complain to health canada abd this is wrong my furst stay with Hotelscom is the worst experience

Ok for cheap last minute overnight stay and friendly staff on arrival. The whole building stinks absolutely awful like toilets and stale piss. The bed in private room was very uncomfortable and flat hard pillow. You have to pay for towels and there’s no other way to dry your hands in bathroom without paying for a towel. Downstairs area and Kitchen and dining area is very dark. Free breakfast provided but no fresh milk for coffee - only powdered.

I appreciated the night ambience and the free drink and the events at the bar. For breakfast, I have peanut allergies so I had to be a bit more cautious and cross contamination was a concern, pretty minor.
One minor complaint I had was the window did not close. There happened to be a strike so I woke up every morning as a result.

I liked the fact that it was so well located in Victoria. The property was very basic but clean. Will definitely stay again. Some people may dislike the homeless in the area, but this is common in cities throughout the world. If you want to see as little of that as possible, I recommend when leaving the property turn left and walk down to Douglas or Government St. (ideal) to get on your way downtown.

The service of this hotel is worst it was showing free parking online but when we went there they said our parking is full and you can pay for the street parking. You also have to pay for the towel and soap, the rooms are really congested. Really disappointed

Anything in this place is disgusting. Nothing in the picture and information in their website are accurate. Don't waste your money in this uncomfortable place. I chose Ocean Island because it was the cheapest option within walking distance of the marina and theaters downtown but I imagined that it was going to be a little rough, mainly because of the neighborhood it's in but also from past experiences at hostels. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it is not only incredibly clean but also very quiet. The only sound I heard at night were seagulls going by. The shared bathrooms were very well kept and I only had to wait my turn once. The dinner they serve (green curry with peas and potatoes the night I had it) was delicious and the free drink was cheerfully served. Breakfast was also fresh and delicious. The neighborhood is sketchy, especially at night but the fentanyl addicts are all around during the day as well. One hopes that one doesn't happen to walk by when one of these people is having any kind of manic moment but if seeing drug use and its results are not something you want on vacation this is not the place for you.

We stayed at private Queen room and we left with bed bug bites and on our last day, we noticed that the sheets were stained with what appear to be blood. The staff was kind and good service.

My stay at the hostel was great! Everything is well thought out and all of the basic nessecities are taken care of (or available for a very reasonable deposit or fee). I would definitely stay there again. Whoever left the tip about asking for earplugs at the front desk, thank you!

It’s in a good location and rates are the main reason I stay there- area at night is starting to be crowded with addicts and those with mental health issues that make walking around after dark and early mornings feel unsafe

This was my first time staying in a dorm room. It was a little cramped and difficult to carry my bags to my bed but not too bad. It’s a historic building so I understand that not everything is going to be perfectly modern.
My roommate was transphobic but that’s not the property’s fault. The staff handled the situation very well.

Ocean Island Inn treated me very well for my two night stay. It's a hostel with a broad diversity of amenities and services available, all with a humbly human vibe. It's located in a part of town that's accessible by walking to much of what Victoria has to offer, and Victoria is a really nice, small city by North American standards. It is a little gritty around the Inn, so factor your appetite and acceptance of that kind of thing into whether this is the place for you, but it's definitely safe. My room was clean and tidy, the bed comfy and the facilities very good. I'll stay again.

Showers were much better than expected. Maybe I just had good roommates, but the room was quiet and felt safe. Never saw or heard from the people in my room, only once I was out and about.
