We had a terrible experience to start off our stay. This hotel offered to book a taxi for us from our other hotel in Positano, and we accepted not knowing that we would be dropped off at a different hotel that is a 5 minute walk away through lots of stairs. So after drop-off, we had to then choose either to pay an additional 30 euro fee to hire a porter service or carry our heavy suitcases ourselves (which was not communicated ahead of the reservation). We felt scammed. If they offer to book you a taxi, I'd recommend just hiring the porter service only instead (unless you're coming from somewhere very far). When we got to the hotel, we were extremely frustrated and had no one to address this issue - as the person Mario we had been communicating with was not there in person & none of the staff really spoke English. Our booked taxi was also 30 minutes late (with no notice ahead of time) by the way, causing us to miss our ferry reservation.

Additionally, for how expensive this hotel is during peak season, I would not say it's worth it. The rooms and furniture have that quaint vintage feel to them, but they are pretty run down. The windows are extremely creaky, you can hear everything from the rooms next door, and the restroom is fairly old (so the sink and toilet did not drain well). Overall, it was a very disappointing experience and we had wished that we stayed at our original hotel.

The location, beautiful room, great adjacent dining, and directly on the beach. For the rate…UNBELIEVABLE!! Only negative was no parking anywhere near the hotel; have to plan how to get bags to the room or hump them up and down the mountain. I would DEFINITELY stay there again!

Rented a room with beach view and got exactly that. Located as close to the beach as you can get; opposite side of shoreline from the ferry so you don’t feel that foot traffic. restaurants, cafes, etc all nearby. Mrs Rosa was a delight, very kind and cheerful. Online messaging to virtual agent was effective too

Rosa doesn’t speak any English , but she was a humorous individual. Room was different from what was booked, furniture was poorly looking and air conditioning was broken . Overall the only decent thing about this place was the direct access to beach .

Pleasantly surprised! This was our second time in Positano. Our last hotel in Positano was beautiful but not close to the beach. La Caravella has the best location. Reading all the reviews was helpful as far as check in. Let’s just say the check in was like in the laundry room.! The lady Rosa did not speak English. However, rooms were very spacious, clean, beds a bit firm but the location right on the water was great. It’s not the St.Regis it’s more old school rustic. Our driver dropped us off at the top and had luggage porter deliver to our room.They charge $10 per bag but well worth it.
This place is great for families.I would definitely book again.

Great location right close to the action and the beach and with no stairs required unless you choose to go up. Go to a grocery store and get snacks and wine and enjoy the lounge chairs without the fee they charge at the beach and the same view. Check-in was a little bit confusing but turned out okay. There is no reception desk and you have to look for Rosa by either finding her in one of the rooms are going in the side entrance and going down to the bottom where the laundry room is. She's very nice!

Others online mentioned some problems like rooms being cancelled last minutes or prices raised day of, but I did not experience any of this but I would recommend reading reviews online.The room itself was nice but were old and didn't look like the pictures. They had really good AC and right on the beach but the lady who runs the hotel knows very very little english and just tries to talk in italian instead which made communication really challenging. We had trouble getting to the hotel since we had large suitcases and were dropped off at the top of Positano while the hotel was at the bottom and we tried to call the hotel to figure out what to do but the person who answered didn't speak good enough english to advice us on what to do and then just hung up so we were left figuring out emergency porter services on our own. Overall I would say this hotel is not worth the money unless you really want to stay right on the beach.

Please stay away from This property, it is highly unsafe and people that work here are very, very, very rude and unprofessional. They did not let me check in into my room when I arrive and later, said that it was not their job to let me in, it did not make sense in the place look terrible. This is the worst place. I have been in all my travel, I have never had this sort of anger in disappointment, don’t make the mistake of booking this place. There are many better places around this hotel with better prices, I ended up paying for another hotel right around the corner and he was 10 times better and people were nicer. It is incredible. How rude and professional this people are.

We were pleasantly surprised with this location especially given the terrible reviews that it has. I can’t speak for the other rooms but we booked a “double partial sea view” and it was great! Room was decently clean, amazing location, and bed was comfy! Check in was a little confusing but if you call when you get there, they will send Rosa to get you in. And yes, like some other reviews say, she does take you to the downstairs closet looking room but if you’re nice to her, she’ll be nice to you! Overall very happy with our stay!

Quaint, cutely decorated casita type hotel with nice patio, living room, kitchenette, bed and bath right on the beach. Unfortunately, the beach bar next door plays loud music nightly until midnight. Hotel did not include kitchen towels, soap, sponge, paper towels or wine glasses. For the nightly price, those items need to be included. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, which was four nights.

Communication with front desk is terrible. It was my 30th anniversary. The rooms AC was not working. Front desk gave us fans. It was the middle of summer. I got in touch with expedia and they denied expedia of anyone complaining on AC not working. We understand sometimes things break and stop working but not to try to fix it and find a solution and lie about no one complaining is not acceptable. They did not care to refund us any amount. It is NOT worth the MONEY.
I DO NOT recommend this stay. I want at a partial refund.

Check in was confusing. You have to call and someone comes out to greet you in the courtyard.
The room we had included a daybed and we asked for an extra sheet and pillowcase to cover it. We sent an email and called and the next day we were met in the courtyard by the staff who told us it was ‘not normal’ that we wanted the extra sheets. She wanted us to show her the room and accused us of hosting additional guests beyond the 2 of us (which we were not). We were also told that she would check the video surveillance to ensure we did not have additional guests (which we did not). It just left a bad taste for our stay.
On the positive side, it is a great location!

Best location in Positano, right by the beach. The apartment is spacious and very simple, felt like we were back in the 70’s. That was not a problem at all, we chose it for the location. The walls are very thin, so if privacy is your concern, be aware that you can hear even snoring. The ladies that take care of the property are super sweet and try their best to be understood. We loved staying there. Come if an open mind and heart.

It was the worst. View isn’t everything.
We received a double bed sea view room while our original booking was a double bed suite with a sea view terrace.
The pictures aren’t the same at all.
And when we tried to reach out to solve this issue no one seemed to care and they tried to convince us and normalize that the photos of the room you book aren’t always the same as the room you receive. What is that? Photos specifications and room details were all different.
We were spending 1 night there and we lost half of our day trying to fix the issue which was never solved.
What a waste of time and money and What a terrible hospitality. We are still shocked of what happened and the “ROOM” they gave us.

Where do I start...?!

Currently hotels.com are liaising with the hotel regarding my complaints.

- advertised as with balcony, no balcony
- advertised as property with a roof terrace, hotel doesn’t have a roof terrace

When we showed the check in manager the listing, she said it wasn’t her problem that the info wrong

- shower with no pressure OR hot water
- noisy bar down below
- we were put in a room near the bar next door, noisy
- the private beach has no direct access to the sea, so you have to go to the public beach / pay for Lido

Check in process... met by a rude woman. When we got to the room, I pointed out that the listing said it would have a balcony, she said that not all rooms have balconies.

She then proceeded to tell us it was only for one night, and to just get on with it. She then advised that we weren’t paying as much as we should due to Covid and we should feel lucky.

I appreciate Covid has hit hospitality hard, but do not take it out on the people spending money with you!!

I tried to call hotels.com but unfortunately got cut off twice. So we had to stay there. It was uncomfortable and I’ve never been spoken to so poorly before.

My boyfriend and I understand and speak Italian so we were able to communicate with her.

Also... paid twice for WiFi, no access, disputing the €20 with PayPal as paid through PayPal account.

Really disappointing. The worst hotel experience I’ve ever had.

Great location, clean lovely room. However, I booked this room for my husband and I and since we always share a bed and room obviously, I didn’t change the 1 person to 2 people and was charged double upon arriving because there were two people staying in the one room. This has never happened to me before. I’ve never heard of a property charging per person instead of per unit/room, so I would be very careful when booking this because we paid DOUBLE the price we agreed upon when booking.

Overall, it's a nice hotel in a fantastic location -- especially if you're arriving and departing Positano by ferry. Since the location does not have a lobby or a front desk - the check-in process was a bit confusing. The manger was a bit frustrated with us -- but we didn't let it ruin our trip. The rooms were clean and beds were comfortable. Yes, our window did face a cliff wall - but we knew that before we booked the room. I would definitely stay here again if I were to go back to Positano.

I read all of the reviews and knew that it wasn't going to be perfect, but we needed a place to stay and took a chance. The hotel was nice and the location was fabulous. The issue was the service, I don't care for a respond from the staff either as I saw the way they respond to those who offer their rightful criticisms as paying customers. Upon our return we were told we could't get an early checkin even though, via email we were told if a room was available it may work. The hotel was quiet and was not at capacity, I work in the service industry and know what an at capacity hotel looks like. That being said, that would have been fine what happened next is what set the tone for us. We asked to used the bathroom were told no very sharply and then a quick use your bathroom when you can checkin. That is just rude and bad business, we had been in transit from Rome since 7 AM and were turned away. -with what you pay for this establishment the service should have been better. Then upon our checkin, we were given a room at the very back of the inn facing the mountain. We spent a lot of time in our room and heard only three other couples come in and out, so not full. Our paperwork, the paperwork from Hotels.com, and the app said balcony I verified the wording it said balcony and listed it under \"room amenities\", not \"hotel amenities\", I nicely told this to the staff and was told I was wrong. Facts don't lie, if you advertise something honor it. Lying and false advertisement is wrong.

Showed up at this hotel and they had no record of our PREPAID expedia reservation. Hotel has no front door, you enter through an alley and back door of the building where they make you stand in a stairwell to check in.

Anyway, we were told that there was no reservation and no vacancy so we had to go to another hotel and get a room for the night. On tip of this Expedia is telling us that there is no refund.

There are no amenities, your just paying for a bed that’s it. The maid service is like one woman, and she doesn’t clean at all when your there. The property manager was rude and aggressive immediately. The room was in poor condition, unclean, the beds were old, spring beds. The floors had ants all over them and of course you have to pay for WiFi daily. Convenient, if you want to be right on the beach but even that isn’t worth the trouble.

Location on the beach, without doubt the best and only place to stay in Positano! Every other hotel may have beautiful views but that requires you walking up and down that cliff to get to the beach - we were on the sand !! A few times we would walk up the steps for a meal or photos and it damn near killed me and we are of reasonable fitness. If your fitness isn’t great I warn you not to stay up the cliff only stay here where you can avoid the massive walk to beach and action. We had no issues with noise, we didn’t have a view as our room faced the mountain so watch for that, check in experience was “rustic Italian” and Internet was awful but apparently all of Positano has bad internet but daily when i watched others have to climb that mountain in 35 degree heat just to get back to their rooms and then get dressed and climb the stairs again for dinner, not once did I complain about my accom. My Apple Watch counted us waking 19 floors to get to dinner, 3 floors and I’m puffed. The only place to stay and relax in Positano is here, Rosa who manages, doesn’t speak a word of engiish and me not one word of Italian - made the trip even more enjoyable!! Bless her, check in requires you to wonder around until you call her name or others see you lost and call for you - it was fantastic and we got everything we needed. Truly magical

Terribly disappointed. I have stayed there before. Perfect location. I clicked the wrong month when booking on line and within minutes contacted Hotels. Com to change the dates. They did their very best but to no avail. Granted it was a non refundable reservation. But for an honest mistake and prompt action to change dates I was shocked at their attitude. We had a holiday Resort for 25 years and would never have treated clients so badly.

Otherwise, it was not a good experience.
Too expensive( I paid 350$ per night without breakfast), check in difficult, no body was at the property, I was not informed that the taxi does not reach the property and that I need to Arrange for porter to get the luggage to the place( too many steps) , the person who does the check in and who takes care of property Rosa is very rude and abrupt, you have to pay for wifi 10€ per day and somehow they block ur wifi( i had a package to cover Europe via AT & T which worked everyplace except in hotel), when I arrived I spoke to the office to extend my check out time to 1 pm instead of 11am but Rosa came at 11 am to ask me to leave, it took me one hour to be able to speak to somebody who speaks english in the office to clarify the issue( no communication).

For the traveller who needs as few steps in Positano as possible this property and our unit in particular, was fine. Right on the beach the unit was a two room apartment with a closet kitchen, decent bathroom and a large bedroom. The best part was the huge covered patio overlooking the beach. Even though the property and furnishings were old it was clean and we felt safe there.

I have read some of the reviews on here and I think you need to keep it in perspective. It was an awesome location right on the beach, right in the middle of it all. You are surrounded by beautiful scenery, shops, restaurants and hey, you're in ITALY! I would recommend this place for sure. We went during an off season time for a wedding and it wasn't as crowded as it could have been. I might suggest, that if it's your first time visiting that you take out extra Euro's and get a driver from the Rome Airport. It made life so much easier! If you need more info let me know. And most importantly, it's Positano and you will need your walking shoes! There are lots of stairs and different paths that lead you down to the La Caravella. Chose wisely because what comes down must go back up!.

The location of this hotel is amazing! You’ll get an amazing view every morning, the accessibility of the beach and the best restaurants is perfect!

The hotel room itself needs to undergo major upgrades.
Bathroom:
Handles broke off the shower and the bidet. We’re not “hulk” like people, so it is a testament to how old and in need of updates they are. The water pressure in the shower (sink was perfect) was awful. Like taking a shower with a light drizzle from a straw. Ladies, you’ll be there for 20 min trying to wash out the shampoo in your hair and then have to repeat again w the conditioner! Showers are a mission.

Bed:
The “premium” bedding is like saying grandma’s guest room from the 1960’s has nice premium bedding you’d like to sleep on. The pillows are very thin, so not good for side sleepers. The bed is firm, like sleeping in stacked up cardboard because it has the slightest bit of cushioning on the top, I estimate a quarter of an inch.

Kitchen:
The hot plates did not work in the morning, so we informed them and they told us they would be there in 10 minutes. We waited an hour and a half just for the property manager to make an assessment to then call in a professional to fix it. It was fixed at the end of the day (6pm).

Towels:
Not premium towels and very stingy with them. They would give any extra towels upon my request for them.

Balcony:
The balcony was phenomenal! The view was simply magical.

For the money we spent, you’d expect a lot more.

Great location

Was a bit scared to stay here because of the mixed reviews but we had a great experience. The location can’t be beat, it’s right on the beach and our room was a great size with a balcony overlooking the main beach. It’s great value compared to other places in the area and Rosa and the staff were very helpful!

Eva was an absolute gem. Always made herself available and was very attentive to our needs. As far as location goes, you can't beat it. Right on the beach, close to the ferry, and within a stone's throw from all the best restaurants in Positano. The one slight drawback is that the property is in need of some updates here and there. Nothing major, but for the price you'd think this was a given.

DO NOT STAY HERE. Had a horrendous experience at this “hotel”. No one speaks English here, there is no reception so we had to pay etc in the laundry room (super dodgy) and one of the ladies kept bathing into our room after we checked in so we had to lock ourselves in to keep her out. Overall, a terrible hotel. Good location but I’d rather stay 10km up the cliff face than here.

Location location was perfect, restaurants where so close and lovely, the beach was only foot steps away and we even had our own lounge chairs. On the down side I should of requested a sea view, it was a little room with no view. Rosa was friendly and helpful with anything we needed, but with no reception or checkin desk she was hard to find, I had great help from a lovely guest staying there.

Location great, service needs work

We arrived and found it difficult to check in as there is no reception. The staff didn't speak a lot of English making communication also tough. The room was fine in terms of size and comfort however it didn't seem to be all that clean with hair on the floor. The wifi also didn't work even though we spent $200 aus. on it. The location was great.

They are a shady group. They tried to shake me down for more money when I arrived and asked for it in cash vs. a credit card which means they were trying to stuff their own pockets.

Poor communication and no facilities and no help

Property next to beach but impossible to get there if you have more than one very light hand bag. No desk to check in nobody to bring your bag from half a mile. Make your own arrangement at a ridiculous cost to bring bags in.paid for internet thrice still no internet
No body to call for help if u need something
No cleaning service
Cost more than 5 star hotel
Expedia should take it off the web site

Beach front!

Geat beach front location! Spacious and clean Rosa the manager was attentive and made sure everything was perfect avoid all the positano stairs and be in the heart of it all! They do evwrything they can to make your stay great!

Hidden costs galore, bad service

After booking online for my husband and I, we were charged another $90€ for him to stay. This was after walking 45mins from parking (the parking was approved by our hotel and we consequently got our car impounded). After paying the extra 90€, we had to pay an additional “city tax” (which was already included in the hotel.com booking fee). Internet was an additional charge of 10€ a day and no breakfast was provided (not even a cup of coffee in the room). The manager was rude and not helpful. Bed was uncomfortable (springs pop when you move round) and the entire hotel smelled of smoke. Would not recommend for the price, LOTS of hidden prices. We are not complainers and know to expect the unexpected. This place is really bad.

Likes: Really close to the beach. Literally a minute walk. Pretty spacious. Its not really an hotel, more apartment style.
Dislikes: Ridiculously overpriced. No free wifi(Wifi is 10 euros a day), definitely not what you'd expect for what you pay for, bed was uncomfortable.

If distance to the beach is important, you can't beat this place. Its super close. I had a nice view of the ocean from my balcony. Other than that my experience was so so. I was taken aback by the fact that they didn't offer free wifi for the amount i was paying every night to stay there. this is the most basic amenity a place should offer. The check in process was a joke. there's no official place you go to check in like a normal hotel. when i walked in, there was a lady named Rosa who had my name scribbled on a piece of paper. When i tried to check out couple days later, she was nowhere to be found. the cleaning lady spoke no english(though she tried to help) so it was hard to get much info out of her to Rosa's whereabouts. And it was getting close to check out time. fortunately i ran into a couple who was also checking out and they said i just had to leave my key in the room. of course I was never told this when i checked in. Also i'd bring your condiments incase you run out. They literally gave me a small 1oz body wash/shampoo. Would definitely look at other hotels before you consider this one which offer more amenities at a lower price.

I read other reviews but thought it cant be that bad and booked it anyway. What a mistake. They falsely advertise the room as large 97 square metres. They gave us a dungeon that was 25 sqm. Then when we queried the discrepancy they got angry at us. Told us we had to pay double the price for the larger room. There is no reception staff on site. Spent half the day trying to sort it out with expedia. The hotel management was not willing to help in any way. In fact there arrogant attitude made it extra difficult to find a solution with expedia. Luckily expedia paid the difference and we got the room that was actually sold to us. Avoid this hotel unless you want problems. Rooms are very cheaply furnished. I would rather stay at a back packers hostel than this place.

Takes the cake for worst place I've ever stayed :(

This is mostly an apartment complex and should not be a hotel supported by hotels.com. The one positive is it is as close as you can get to the beach. The one old woman running the establishment does not speak English and is unorganized and unprofessional. She gave us a very small one bedroom about 10ft wide when I pre paid for a much larger two bedroom. We wanted to leave when we seen the rooms, but her translator over the phone refused to refund me. I felt stuck. Hotels.com did give me $100 credit but the room I paid for was 300 per night. This woman doesn't always knock. You have to always lock yourself inside because she barged in on me twice! I stayed in two different rooms at this hotel, both were very uncomfortable. One had bugs from a window left fully open before I arrived, and the second had someone else's hairs everywhere. I doubt the shower was clean because there was a used soap bar sitting inside. We asked for a regular clothing iron multiple times, first they said, \"no the next day only.\" Then they flat out said no. There are no phones, no help with your bags, no service what so ever from this place. Once in the night around 9pm we needed something and went to the management door where the old woman stayed and although we heard her inside she refused to answer. On our way out we seen a couple going through the same things we did. I am genuinely worried about future bookings utilizing hotels.com because this was so misleading and made me feel scammed.

Hotel with great location

Loved staying on a hotel located on the beach! In Positano, there is a long walked down (and eventually back up) to the beach - not so at this hotel!! Our room seemed like a small apartment with a tiny kitchenette and small refrigerator. My husband and I like to travel a lot - the price on this hotel was great. You don't have the large staff as other hotels, but we found Rosa very helpful and always ready to give us advise or a friendly greeting (we looked forward to seeing her everyday!) There were a couple of grocery store nearby for snacks and drinks. One night my husband and I bought the best pizza ever and took it back to our balcony - which had the best views of Positano!! Thinking of going back for a longer (month) visit and this place will be perfect!!

There was no \"place\" to check in as in front office or check in . It is a house broken up into rooms so it's ok for that but not what I was expecting . I was disappointed overall .The location was great but had no parking

Do not stay here.

I took charge of booking our honeymoon in Italy and reserved a room on Expedia for 3 nights at La Caravella about two months prior to our scheduled stay. We recived a confirmation from Expedia and were told that we did not need to re-confirm with the hotel.

After a delightful 2 nights in Almafi we drove to Positano for the next leg of our trip and upon arrival we were told they didn't have our reservation and they did not have an available room for us. Rosa, the onsite contact brought us into a basement laundry room that smelled of cigarettes and had half drunk bottles of gin and Campari strewn about. She put us on the phone with someone I have never met or interacted with and after 25min of discussion we were offered one night at twice the cost of our original booking. I have never been so mad in my life, all we wanted was a relaxing 3 days on the beach and instead we were left on the streets without a place to stay in a foreign country.

After being turned away we stopped by multiple hotels to inquire about rooms and were told that we were not the first couple that had been turned away and in fact La Caravella had knowingly over booked 5 rooms to try and drive a higher cost during a particularly busy weekend.

I would advise you to look elsewhere for accommodations when in Positano.

Best location in town but parking is a issue tho. You have to park in 1 o 2 parking garages at 30Euros a day. Unexpected cost. Apartment was clean and nice. Perfect location and quite at night. Wifi is an extra charge which should be included in the price tho. All in all the location is great!

Lovely place. This is not a hotel, this is an apartment rental. It is right on the beach. We had lots of room (one bedroom, large patio, small kitchen, bathroom). I would come back and bring my family here to stay. There is the private beach, although not right on the water, only a few more steps to the beach.

Nice hotel, but don't expect service

While the hotel is nice and fantastically located, there is no front desk, which makes it difficult to check in and check out, or to get maid service or towels. If it had been easier to get in contact with hotel staff, I would've given the hotel a better rating. However, we had a fantastic stay in Positano, a truly fantastic town.

Nice residence, steps to the beach

We had a lovely time at La Caravella. We arrived with our suitcases a bit early but Rosa allowed us to keep them in the room while we explored and the room was cleaned. We loved out balcony which had a beautiful view of the ocean, beach & hill of Positano.
