High expectations; bitter disappointment

Modern stylish property, but we cut short our stay because of inadequacies in comfort, service and overall efficiency of the hotel. For example: extra hard beds so guest had to try to sleep in chair, no in-room coffee or tea, digestive illness from dinner seafood pasta, tough filet mignon for other dinner, room safe did not work and was not fixed by staff, promised a la carte breakfast menu was refused by restaurant servers who insisted only 18 Euro buffet available (meaning $20 tea and toast for sick guest!). Finding the hotel was also difficult, even in daylight with two GPS navigation systems. Inadequate street signage in Antequera. This Parador presents itself as a high-class lodging with serious cuisine, but fell far short on both counts.

We stayed at the Parador as members of a travel group that was touring Andalusia. Antequera is centrally located, providing easy access to cities and places of interest. We arrived a day ahead of the remainder of the tour group so we were able to enjoy the property by ourselves. The hotel, sitting atop a hill overlooking the countryside, is quiet and understated, blending well with its surroundings. The town, with its restaurants and shops, is a quick walk away. The restaurant offers a buffet breakfast that includes eggs, bacon and sausage cooked as ordered. Lunch and dinner were also very good, with a variety of menu options. An outdoor patio serves drinks and snacks. The entire hotel staff was very attentive and professional. A delightful young lady named Ledy was especially helpful in the restaurant. If we happen to visit the area again, we will definitely return to the Parador.

A quiet night.

Room small and dark. Wardrobe area all black. Linen good.No english language tv, not even bbc news channel which is usually in all hotels.
No proper reading light, bedside lights very high so disturbs person in other bed if have on. Normal rooms have baths so to get a walk in shower we had to have a disabled room. Shower and sink grouting looked as if a 4 year old child had done it, not attractive. Door into room creaked very loudly and we heard others making the same loud noise. No bidet. Everyone polite and helpful but no friendliness, formal. Very quiet. Areas to sit. Easy and free carpark access. No gym, spa or indoor pool. Was fine for a one night stay.

Very nice little hotel with easy access to the local attractions, while being quiet with a nice view of the sunset (despite two days of clouds while I stayed.) Spa on site was a nice feature, but my masseuse was too gentle - that's just luck of the draw though. Strong wifi.

Antequera is fabulous: GO!
The Parador: airy, bright & done with style throughout & helpful staff. Big very comfortable rooms, great bathrooms,
This Parador was purpose built, not a historical building. Driving in is easy & they have tons of free on site parking!
Walking into Antequera takes 5 minutes (to the heart of the old town 12 minutes.)
We originally planned to stay in town: narrow one way streets, some under construction, changed our minds.
The quiet of the Parador was excellent.
(Staff moved us when kids nearby were blaring car radios: thank you!)
What they can improve: the parking lot had many cars but the vast dining room with huge view windows was unused.
At breakfast it was quiet (no wonder considering the charge!) At dinner time only saw one couple inside.
The bar is tucked into a small recess off the entry hall with zero atmosphere, no windows & staff had to be called to get a drink.
Why not partition the vast dining hall with it's huge view windows & create an enticing bar area? Would've loved sitting there having drinks & snacks there but were told only those having dinner could enter (even tho from 3-6 it was totally empty & when we peeked in later, one solitary couple were dining.)
Real disappointment: we loved having drinks with views in Paradores in Arcos & Ronda and I suspect other guests felt the same as the bar here was barely used.
So we walked back to town for drinks & ended up staying there for dinner.
Hotel is very nice and enjoyed the room!

The hotel was good. But the pool area was disgustingly dirty, broken glass panel. Scum around the pool showers were full of slimy water. It was 35 degrees and so dirty we couldn’t use the pool. Concerns around hygiene and bacteria were very disappointed.

This is a modern building. It smelt a bit chemical on arrival, on 4th December there was a bare Christmas tree in the lobby which looked a bit half hearted. The 1/2 board was alright but much the least good food I had in a week in Spain. Overall the least nice and most expensive place I stayed and disappointing in comparison.

All was good with one important exception. On the afternoon of our first day there was a large private party with lots of noisy people and hyper-active children. Initially they were mostly in the private dining room so we found seats and were able to order a drink, hoping to enjoy the wonderful view. We also hoped to have a light snack in the cafe - but all was overwhelmed,so we had to wait two hours for a full dinner that we did not really want ( though it was very good). Please find some way of separating such a private party from more peaceful facilities for ordinary hotel guests - with a view please!

A nice, modern, spacious hotel, with quality decor, carpets/ flooring and furniture.
Easy free parking on the hotel car park in front of the hotel.
We had a very pleasant and helpful greeting at reception.
We were given a good sized room, which had a good bathroom. Unfortunately the shower was over the end of the bath.
A comfy large twin beds pushed together.
The hotel was spotlessly clean throughout.
All the staff we encountered were friendly and all very hardworking. The hotel does suffer from understaffing! The restaurant and bar/cafeteria staff work extremely hard and are very obliging but lack more help as service tends to be slow with very long pauses between getting service/ordering/ courses/ getting drinks (sometimes after the course had been finished or not at all)
Great views of the countryside from the restaurant. Food is rustic and is served in large portions .
Breakfast is buffet style, with a reasonable choice of both cold and hot fare and particularly good cakes.
The highlight of the area are the 5,000 years old Dolmens and the historic town . All within walking distance.
Although the television had 50 or so channels it was unfortunate that it lacked a British, English speaking one.
Overall, A good hotel and we would stay here again. The understaffing lets the hotel down. ****

I had a relaxing stay, the staff were very attentive, and the facilities were good. The only thing that they could improve especially for European clients is to provide coffee and tea making facilities in the rooms like even the basic B & B properties in the UK do and even the Room Mate hotels in Spain provide.

Very disappointed as there were renovations being carried out during our stay.. we moved rooms but we were still disturbed by the noise... even the pool area was noisy and certainly not conducive to relaxing. The staff did their best but really I feel the hotel should have been closed.. we were never contacted before our stay to inform us of any renovations. Antequera is a wonderful town to visit however with rest historical sites and great restaurants.

Nothing particularly good or bad about this place. Not close to the sights, and somewhat sterile. A \"modern\" parador, not one of the classic ones in other parts of Spain.
Went for a drink, couldn't get served. Waitress actually went into the back room after she saw us and did not come back out. We left after 10 minutes. Not impressed. Clean, modern, but otherwise not memorable. I'd find somewhere else next time.

Ideal stop over between Malaga and Cordoba.

Antequera is an ideal location for a stop over when heading from Malaga to Cordoba, combined with trip to El Torcal national park, flamingo watching at Laguna de Fuente de Piedra, exploring the local Neolithic dolmen's. The Parador is easy to find, and is within walking distance from the centre of town, 10-15 mins, although there is a fantastic restaurant in the vicinity of the Bull ring (Actually under the grandstand) which is only 5 mins away. The hotel also has fantastic views of the Peña de los Enamorados a mountain which looks like a face.

This hotel is modern and beautiful to look at but not really guest friendly.The restaurant was cavernous and echoed. No draws to put clothes in the bedroom and no space for toiletries in the bathroom. The two female receptionists were great but the rest of the staff rather distant. We felt much of the emphasis was on the business meeting being held. Even with a dozen or more guests around the pool there was not a member of staff to be found to serve drinks or tea.Guests had to get dressed then walk some distance to find someone to help and then carry drinks etc themselves down several flights of stairs.

The town of Antequera is often missed as it is at the crossing of the A92 from Seville to Granada and the A45 from Malaga to Cordoba. In itself it is beautiful with a great history dated back to prehistoric times, through numerous conquests to the present day where it is the centre of Spain's olive producing region. Regular markets and numerous shops, restaurants and places of interest meant that we were never bored. The Parador hotel had superb staff,very obliging and informative. The room was spacious, modern and very good value. Food was excellent and the pool was utilised. Antequera is also a good focal point to visit the previously mentioned cities. Hiring a car from Malagacar Hire at the airport ensured a quick journey to the hotel and we could visit places of interest easily.

A nice hotel in a wonderful city.

Very comfortable, lovely view from our room, good bed and bedding. Ensuite with opaque glass wall and the decor of the room was very appreciated. Lovely pool and gardens.
There were some downsides. The bar near the pool was closed all the time. Also the AC was on chiller all day and the room got really cold, we had to open the window. At night though when a cold room much appreciated the chiller was turned off and we had the fan running but the room gradually got too hot so again the window had to be left open. No mosti screen so suffered some bites but at least cool enough to sleep.

First stay in a parador

Paradoxes were recomended to me and I made the mistake of staying in a cheaper hotel first....

Eventually stayed at the parador and the first thing that struck me was how clean it was - I don't think I could find a speck of dust or an area that was not polished - housekeeping was excellent.

Breakfast was also very good and worth the investment - I had been advised that evening meals can vary in quality and this proves to be the case. My advice, now based on 3 different paraders would be to eat out in the evening.

Staff were mainly excellent in every possible way. Just one exception being a very grumpy gent who ran the bar one nofht and seemed to supervise breakfast a couple of times, but apart from him it's a 10/10 on the staff front from me.

Antequera is a great place to explore, and the parador is convenient for that and well worth staying at.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Parador. The room was spacious and very clean. We had lunch and breakfast in the dining room and both were good. Pricier than restaurants in town but very elegant. It was our first stay at a Parador. We could see why people choose them when travelling in Spain.

Typical 4 star hotel with modern decor but rather bland and soulless. Rooms have a frosted glass in room bathroom 'cube' which is the only distinguishing feature. The pool looks like it is set in a post communist public park and the shallow end is 140cm so no good for kids aged 7 and under unless they are good swimmers. Infant pool is 30cm deep so great for tiny tots only.
We had a fold down bed for our 7y.o. which they loved and was very comfy and the room was spacious enough to accommodate us all.
Good location, great for walking around town.

It lacks the character of the more traditional parador but the decor is ultra modern and attractive nonetheless. Very comfortable, helpful staff and plenty of parking. Very convenient to walk onto the delightful Antequera. We only stayed one night on our way to Cadiz. We look forward to returning for a stay of several days on a future holiday..

The hotel is large and does have nice looking pool in nice grounds with lots of tables/chairs for sitting out. Note - the prices for food are outrageous, we did not eat there but strolled 5 minutes into town for evening meal and breakfast. The room and bathroom were great but the air conditioning was rubbish and did not cool the room (even after help from the staff)

Anniversary in Antequera

We enjoyed a great two nights at the Parador de Antequera and would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone staying in the area. Immediately upon arrival the clerk (in perfect English, which is never expected but always convenient) proceeded to give us detailed tourism advice, multiple maps and overall excellent customer service. The room was spacious and clean with modern decor and a view of the pool and mountain range in the distance. We walked to dinner our first night, conveniently only ten or fifteen minutes away (there are multiple dinig options within a five minute walk as well). Breakfast was good, with eggs, toast, meats, a good selection of cheeses, bread, fruit and yogurt. The dining area has floor to cieling windows that overlook the mountiains in the distance, very beautiful. We also dined at the hotel that night, and were pleased with our dinner (cod and pasta). The only (minimal) complaint we had was that we've had of nearly every hotel in Spain...the \"double bed\" actually consisted of two single beds pushed together, neither of which was outfutted with a very comfortable mattress. However, this is to be expected in most European hotels, so we knew what we were getting into. Beside that, the mini bar was well stocked, there were plenty of satellite channels to choose from, the hotel was quiet and clean, and we enjoyed a couple hours basking poolside. If you're looking for a nice stay in Antequera, the Parador is your best option.

Service particularly in the restaurant was very poor, and the food very uninspiring. Would definitely not eat there again. I was disappointed. Only one gentlemen who worked at the hotel smiled.

Absolutely Relaxing

Even though we stayed here for just one night, which we are now regretting for not staying longer. We found the place extremely relaxing and quite. A great place to forget about work and read a book. Would really consider going back again. We have already recommended this place to friends and family.
