This historic hotel is a jewel in West Texas. It is gracious and lovely, with a strong sense of history, but also brings the amenities that you'd want in an upscale hotel: a lovely restaurant and edgy cocktails, and a full, interesting menu. Above all, the people who work here are the icing on the cake: they are down-home in all the best ways and completely unpretentious; they are helpful and friendly and bring a strong sense of pride and ownership to their work. I just love El Capitan!

Had a wonderful stay - all of the staff I encountered were super nice and friendly. Felt safe and the room was the cleanest I’ve ever experienced. Yes, there is a train nearby - embrace it or go deal with the highway noise on the I-10 :-)

Lovely historic and restored hotel! Getting in and out of there is a little confusing. You can't really park out front, so you have to drag your luggage up some stairs from a side door to figure out where the registration desk is.

What a beautiful place to stay. My husband and I are so happy that we found this charming hotel. The place was absolutely antique looking but at tge same time clean upscale. The bed omg, super comfy. Like sleeping on the clouds. The breakfast staff I loved the most. The front desk with those yummy warm cookies. I highly recommend this place. Will definitely come back.

Absolutely beautiful place! Loved the restaurant and our door seating. Food was ok but nothing to brag about. Drinks inconsistent as well as service. Very worst part of stay was the size of the room. The bed seemed much smaller than a queen, which was what was advertised but not uncomfortable. The bathroom was the smallest I’ve ever seen and the commode very low even for a kid. And.. the mirror over the sink was too high. At 5’2”” I could only see my forehead and eyebrows. The refrigerator and microwave was stashed in a little small closet and to add to all this, the coat-hangers were the most difficult ones to use I’ve ever used. Overall I’d give the experience 3 out of 5 only because the place was soo artistically designed and layed out!

Bed was quite comfortable; Room was small but we expected that with a historic property. AC was difficult to regulate, either too warm or too cold. Air blew right down onto the bed. There were two small dogs in the room next door that barked steadily from 7pm to 10pm as well as occasionally during the night and started barking at 6am again. There was no phone in the room to call the front desk. Suggest guests with animals be told to not leave dogs alone in room.
Food in restaurant was very good. Parking convenient.

The good- My Texan wife had always wanted to stay here and this trip to West Texas and Big Bend was the chance. The classic courtyard and shade trees are the entry to a wonderfully restored lobby and library. The rooms are like they never changed but understated new bathrooms. The check-in desk staff was helpful. The breakfast was fine and morning dining space adjacent to the courtyard was sunny. AC was wonderful.

The bad- Rooms have no refrigerators, microwaves of coffee makers. Coffee is available in the lobby though. The evening music in the courtyard and bar was not to our taste [70's rock and very loud], and bartenders bristly and inconsiderate- we left to the library and lobby seating. We chose to eat across the street at The Hangout which was outstanding.

If one is in Van Horn to see Maria arts communities, or Big Bend Ranch State Park or Big Bend National Park, this could be a great choice.

What a great place to stop on our road-trip. This historic hotel has old world charm. The lobby was grand and welcoming, the rooms were quaint and comfortable and the lush outdoor courtyard was the perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail or morning coffee. I appreciated the very well lit parking lot and felt safe leaving my fully packed car there. The restaurant amd bar were closed when we arrived late but had complimentary morning breakfast before resuming our drive. I'll definitely stay here again!

I used the place as a go between to El Paso so I didn't spend time in the room. Despite being very small, the room was nice, the bed comfy, and the shower was awesome. The hotel was very pretty and comfortable. We went at a very busy time because BTS was playing in El Paso so the hotel was completely booked and despite the unusual rush, the staff took excellent care of us. The breakfast was also good.

Upon pulling off the freeway and seeing the area the hotel is in, I was considering scrapping my reservation and heading somewhere safer. I am so grateful I parked and went in because once I stepped into the lobby, I was smitten with the charm and beauty of the historical building. The staff could not have been kinder and the meal out on the patio with live music was magical. I would stay here again in a heartbeat and am spreading word of this gem to everyone!
