We really looked forward to staying at the Zanzibar Queen given other reviews. It didnt disappoint. Fantastic location in beautifully kept grounds. The staff are so welcoming and friendly. The pool area was clean and enticing. There was also boules, volleyball and badminton available to keep the body exercised. As well as table tennis and darts. The restaurant was superb. Ingredients and dishes were varied and akin to fine dining. Resort felt very private although effectively right on the beach. Rooms well decorated, hot showers and balconies facing the stunning indian ocean. A top recommendation and thanks to all the staff for looking after us so well.

We added a quick stay here before our safari and we wished we had stayed longer at Zanzibar Queen. The pool and grounds were very nice. For the beach they provided water shoes (which are needed) but best to bring your own. The manager was exceptionally nice. We were initially concerned having just one restaurant but the menu was good and we were totally happy. Some meals were not part of our package but additional meals and drinks were reasonably priced so we never felt taken advantage of. We will certainly come back.

This was an absolutely beautiful hotel in the middle of paradise. The grounds were impeccable, the beach was idyllic, the staff were so accommodating and helpful, and the food & drinks were 5-star restaurant-quality. Highly recommend!

If not for clean white sandy beach

Friendly staff at front desk, but could use more smile and friendly manner at restaurant as well ^&^

When I asked for water, the server told me to get it myself without a smile. A friendly lady manager heard it and brought it for me..^&^

And, clean white beach photos fooled me thinking good to jump.. it wasn't at all cleaned up mixed seaweeds
with trash, had to boat out away from beach to snorkel or swim, away from sea urchins and seaweeds..^&^

Perfect Getaway

Deluxe Apartment Sea Facing- 10/10. Clean. Great size. Quiet. Excellent view. First floor, so avoided noisy neighbours above us. Decent, but small safe. A/C worked well.
Bathroom - 10/10. Clean. Lovely shower.
Bed - 10/10. Very large. Very comfy. Mozzy nets and turn down service at night.
WiFi - 10/10. Very good, considering where we were. Worked fine down by the pool and even worked by the beach!
Pool - 10/10. Good size. Nice and clean laid out pool area, with plenty of loungers and shade. Beach/pool towels provided.
Gym - 8/10. Small, with a ‘multi-gym’ and dumbbells. No CV equipment, but room for a workout and some aerobic exercises. Did its job.
Spa - N/a. Didn’t use.
Staff - 10/10. From check-in to check-out, all the staff were friendly, attentive and most helpful. Special thanks to Abdul and Fatima in the restaurant. Nothing was too much trouble.
Breakfast/Dinner - 9/10. Stayed half-board and enjoyed it all. Breakfast was standard buffet, with an ok choice, that changed daily. Dinner was a set 3 course meal and on one occasion for Swahili Night, it was a buffet. All of these we felt were very good. Never went hungry!
Hotel - 10/10. Could not fault anything with this hotel. The hotel grounds are magnificent and very well maintained. The peace and tranquility was a complete joy. It is right on a beautiful beach and the sea is lovely.
The appearance/decor/furniture is everything you’d want. We’d definitely recommend this tropical paradise.

Fint ophold med plads til forbedring

Hotellet er placeret ved en dejlig strand.
Bungalow er lækker og meget rummelige. Rengøring var meget sent, det var lidt utilfredsstillende.
Service for det meste fin og venlig. Men en utrolig sløv bartender. Bestilte drinks før maden, men de kom først, da vi var færdig med forretten.
Hygiejnen kunne også godt være bedre, fx er håndskrift et must ved en buffet!

I traveled with my wife during Easter holiday, April, and we had a fabulous time at the Queen Zanzibar Hotel. We booked a garden view room, it was spacious and clean. Staff was super friendly and smiley, from reception to restaurant.
We had half board with dinner included and we did not regret for a second. HB offered a la carte menu with 3 courses and ir was delicious.
The beach in from of the hotel was also good. We definitely recommend Queen Zanzibar!

Fantastic hotel.

Fantastic place. I was on a solo trip and the staff made me feel really welcome and even helped me arrange a scooter for the day. The beach is quiet and beautiful. I managed to run in the mornings along the beach which was perfect. I went the the other more popular side and must say that I preferred the more quiet side. The food was fantastic. If you’re anything other than white prepare for the other guests to stare at you like an alien which was annoying but other than that the stay was fantastic.

Beachfront property, rooms are removed from beaches but top floor has beach view. Beach is long and beautiful but many sea urchins and low tides makes it not swimmable at all times. Proximity to Mnembe island however means you can go there snorkeling every day. Restaurant is very good. Breakfast buffet is plentiful. Staff meets every need and is very friendly. I was there during low season and it was calm and restful.

JUST BOOK ! It’s worth it !!

This was a Solo trip for me and This hotel was by far the best resort I’ve stayed at! Everything was 10s across the board ! The staff are superb and the most respectful group of people. The hotel is designed beautifully , the views are sensational and the comfy vibes naturally balanced throughout the garden and hotel yard is beyond well kept ! The food is also to die for , I enjoyed every meal I had during my entire Holiday!

L'endroit est sympa pour un séjours de tranquillité, mais pas beaucoup d'options et grands choses à faire.
Le personnel peut chaleureux et ne portez pas de masques pour le service (cela était très frustrant) surtout qu'il parle à proximité.
Le service aussi un peu deplorable: au déjeuner, il y avait des mouches qui s'invitent au buffet et si vous avez besoin d'un thé où vous l'apporte déjà dans une tasse. (Pas trop fan moi).

Sinon, c'est un endroit tranquille moins bouillant et agréable

I worked remotely from the Zanzibar Queen for three weeks, and it was wonderful. The staff is top notch, managament/front desk/housekeeping/restaurant staff/kitchen staff/security/spa staff were all friendly and helpful!!!

The entertainment and yoga on site were nice additions, and really made my stay enjoyable.

The room was quiet and well appointed. Seems like it was recently refreshed.

The food at the restaurant was really good, and the options at the included breakfast were tasty and diverse, and allowed a really nice way to start the day.

Cast away experience

This hotel is amazing, the service is really good, the view from the rooms is awesome. We liked everything about it, location, service, food, friendly staff, the only small thing that is probably missing is that there aren't a lot of dining options around it, but it is definitely a perfect place for people who are seeking for a stay with a peace of mind, it is really a quiet place to stay in far from the noisy touristic areas.

They really treated us well here. Staff made us feel at home and were always helpful and cheerful. The Maasai guys they hire to look after the beach were friendly and also helped me dig sea urchin needles out of my foot. The evening meals were festive and had great entertainment every evening, including traditional jumping dances by the Maasai guys who look after the beach. Ordinarily I’m not a big fan of that type of thing, but this was all fun and casual and didn’t feel contrived. The setting is spectacular and they have large gardens that are well tended. We were happy with everything and it was one of our best ever beach trips.

This hotel is a lovely peaceful retreat. The food was excellent, the staff friendly, and the rooms comfortable. They have entertainment provided at dinner time every other night. The only problem we found was that this was very loud, and there is no alternative place to eat if you did not want to watch the entertainment. The volume in the dining room was very loud, and meant we were not able to talk to each other during the meal time, which was a shame as we were on honeymoon!

Excellent welcome on arrival from Hawa who took us on a mini tour of the hotel & explained facilities. Stayed 3 nights in this lovely & relaxing hotel; grounds are beautiful, our room was very spacious & clean; buffet breakfast was different each morning with a delicious variety; dinners were exceptional. All the staff were very helpful, friendly & welcoming. I highly reccomrnend Zanzibar Queen & thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the hotel. Don’t be put off by the bumpy road to the hotel.

This is a brand new property and it’s absolutely beautiful. They did not spare any money when it came to details. The landscaping is stunning and there are so many areas to sit outside that are shady and beautiful. So much use of natural materials around the property and they encourage you to refill your water bottle instead of requesting new plastic water bottles daily. There are water cooler is scattered throughout the property. The pool is beautiful and open 24 hours (no lifeguard) and they have one activity a day from Yoga to henna. It would be nice if they had daily activities such as DailyYoga or water aerobics, daily reef walks, something for kids. I went with my 10-year-old and there wasn’t much for her to do other than hang out at the beach and pool. I knew there was not a kids club but they also were not any kids! The one downside is definitely the beds. The mattresses are hard. There’s a great variety of food, we especially love the fresh fruit and juices and fish. One night they had a barbecue and the selection was fantastic! Everyone at the property is extremely friendly and accommodating. It’s a really lovely place and I highly recommend it.

Lovely beach hotel on the beach. We stayed half board and the food was good with different ‘themes’ each night and entertainment most nights.
We had some issues whilst there but these were dealt with efficiently.
Service at times in the restaurant is not up to standard but management are working on improving this.
There is not much to do in the area but you can organise trips. Unfortunately it’s not easy to swim in the sea due to tides and sea urchins.

My husband and I stayed at the Zanzibar Queen (ZQ) for five days mid-Jan 2019 to spend quality time together, and we weren't disappointed. ZQ is a beautiful property: meticulous attention to details with the landscapes and room decor and frontdesk hospitality; relaxed ambiance (no TVs in rooms), and optional organized activities for guests. These included complimentary yoga/meditation sessions, reef walks during low tides, and dinner performances. We also appreciated ZQ's environment- friendly hotel policies: organic gardens, no disposable containers at hotel, and beach clean ups with guests and hotel staff. Alright, the cons: a) Our A/C unit was broken. And despite efforts of A/C technicians and staff who visited our room 4 times in 2days before the frontdesk moved us to a different room where we spent the remaining 3 days@ZQ; It was annoying but we appreciated our new room; b) Following conversations with staff at the spa, where I got a wonderful body scrub, and with staff at the restaurant, where we had our breakfasts and dinners, we realized that ZQ staff were from the mainland Tanzania and NOT from Zanzibar. In the spirit of social responsibility that ZQ has certainly demonstrated with their environment-friendly policies, we hope that ZQ admin would consider empowering their neighboring local communities and offering work opportunities for qualified young men and women in Zanzibar. Otherwise, we recommend ZQ for folks looking for and we wish them all the best!

Stunning solo trip.

Staying at the Zanzibar Queen was an absolute pleasure. As a young, female solo traveller, I felt safe, secure and very comfortable. The staff — from the drivers all the way to the housekeepers — was extremely friendly and helpful. The location, which is along the white sandy beach of Matemwe, was beautiful. It’s a nice, quiet place to rest and rejuvenate!!

No need to think twice

My stay at Zanzibar Queen was fabulous in every way. I travelled solo (female) and was made to feel welcome, at home and safe by every person working there. The service is perfect, and the staff are not stopped from (and are willing to) talking and sharing their stories. The food is outstanding and the hotel and its surroundings are stunning. It is based in a small fishing village (with not much else around but a few other hotels) and, I was told by locals, that the hotel contribute to the community which was the icing on the cake for me.

Beautiful and thoughtful hotel

The Zanzibar Queen is paradise along the North East coast of Zanzibar. The room is big, with everything you need from a hotel room. The bathroom is also a great size. The hotel is perfectly situated along the Matemwe beach, perfect for getting your feet wet in the Indian Ocean. If the sea is not for you, the pool is more than big enough to cool you down. I don't say this often, but the food really did impress. The breakfast was by far the best I've ever had at a hotel, and I've travelled a lot. The lunch menu was great, with a good selection. Dinner was also top notch. The bar staff were also more than capable of making a good cocktail. My favourite being the caipirinha! The staff were helpful, especially management who clearly really did care about each and every customer staying at the hotel. They took the time to explain the tours that they had on offer, which were all well priced. If you like to scuba dive / snorkel, the hotel has a scuba fish branch that make daily trips to Mnemba island, worth a visit. Loads of marine life, including dolphins.
The only one inprovement would be the internet, it's a little lousy. However, the hotel is an oasis and not many of those have good internet. All in all, 5 star hotel, along the the stunning Matemwe coast. I fully recommend this hotel.

I was travelling alone and have a food allergy, and they took extra care to make me feel welcome, and to ensure my meals were all safe to eat. Also, a big thumbs up for the use of paper straws instead of plastic!

Idyllic honeymoon paradise

A wonderful hotel. We stayed 8 nights for our honeymoon and it was just perfect. The staff were amazing - from the moment we arrived at the hotel to the minute we left. They could not do enough for us.

Most evenings the meals were from an a la carte menu. The food was fine dining and of excellent quality.

The beach was clean with white sand, albeit there are a few sea urchins when the tide is out.

A treat to retreat

We spent 4 nights here as part of our honeymoon and thoroughly enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere after a previous week on Safari.
We were greeted warmly on arrival despite being an hour early for check in. We were shown round the facilities to familiarise ourselves before taken to our room which was pleasantly spacious, stylishly decorated and finished with a quality we had missed elsewhere on our trip to that point. It is always nice to feel a positive surprise that it proved even better than our expectations. The hotel website accurately represents the vibe of this haven. A wonderfully relaxing stay and would most definitely return.
The only regret is spending an extra night in Stone Town when we could've been at Zanzibar Queen instead.

Nice hotel but somehow has bedbugs and cockroach..

To be honest, it's really hard to review this hotel. The hotel itself is actually quite nice, and all staffs are very friendly, food was great too. I did have a good time except also got bitten here by bedbugs the first time in my life!! Trust me, it's not pleasant at all.

So I was bitten by bedbugs so badly that it woke me up at 4am in the morning! I requested to change a room but was told it's fully booked, so they offered to change the mattress and everything in my room. They also sprayed my room after that. So the following night was ok. But then... I found a semi dead cockroach on the floor in the morning, still waving its legs...

Well, I do hope my experience was just an individual case as others seems have good experience with them. I also don't know whether I would recommend this hotel or not. Make your own decision.

Wonderful hotel!

I went on vacation to Zanzibar after a work trip in Kenya. I picked the Zanzibar Queen hotel last minute, there was a good deal and the hotel looked nice and had good reviews. I was very happy with the hotel. The property is beautiful, the view is beautiful, the room was lovely and the bathroom was great. The hotel staff were very helpful and entertaining. I had the half board, which is the room, breakfast, and dinner. The dinner every night was amazing and there were 3 options to choose from. The dining area and pool were great, no complaints. The pool was clean and refreshing. The dining staff were so friendly, fun, and attentive. The AC is in the room worked excellent, the room was kept clean, and the water pressure in the shower was great. The beach location is not good for swimming in the ocean, but I had researched the beach location prior to booking the hotel and was aware that I wouldn't be getting in the ocean by the hotel (have to go further north). I honestly have no complaints about the hotel. The only recommendation I have is related to the breakfast. The dinner was so great, that it made the breakfast underwhelming. I would suggest having a larger variety of breakfast items in the buffet. Note that I was here in March, slow season, the hotel was not full, and they may have not gone wild with breakfast, to ensure they didn't have anything go to waste.

Relax and Enjoy

The hotel is new so everything is in great shape. The staff are marvelous - welcoming, accommodating, friendly. The pool is super warm and clean. There are wonderful places to spend the day lounging and relaxing. The food and entertainment were outstanding. As is true of all the hotels on the northeast coast of Zanzibar, the tides are dramatic and held back by the reef, meaning that at low tide there is no ocean in front of the hotel, For people who like to dive or snorkel, the hotel is close to Mnemba Island where there are great reefs and a very diverse fish population. You need to take a boat out but it is worth it.

Best hotel I've been to

it was my best hotel experience and I've traveled quite a lot.
The standard is a relaxed 5*+ hotels but and the staff including management do what it takes and even beyond to make the gurkests feel good and welcome. We met so many new people and it felt like a cool family 5* fun luxury vacation (what it was, it didnt just feel like it). Marta the manager introduced us guests to each other in a very pleasant welcoming way and we the guests quickly became friends, guests from all over the world - very fine people I might say. The food, the service, the rooms, the facilities, hotel campus and then entire experience where just fabulous. I absolutly recomend this place and I'll for sure come back - can't wait. Ahhh and btw the best beach and diving school of the Island is just there in front of the hotel - fantastic. check it out and ask for Marta. Thanks for all. Looking forward to be back soon.

One of the most relaxing holidays

I booked initially 1 week to stay in Zanzibar at Zanzibar Queen hotel but I ended up staying 2 weeks. Fantastic stuff ready to go the extra mile to accommodate all the extra requests , brilliant chill out atmosphere easy to get to know other holiday makers , very tasty food and superb location with no crowded beach , scuba diving and snorkelling facilities next door. Thanks Marta and Kasia , Simba and all the stuff for making this holiday unforgettable .

Small, friendly hotel with beautiful beach

We had a lovely 10 day stay at the Zanzibar Queen hotel in August 2017. The staff were very friendly and helpful - from organising trips to recommending places for bike rides. The hotel was fairly newly opened although it doesn't really show - it is well established already.

The rooms are colourful and charmingly decorated though not the same level of luxury of a 5*. It just depends whether that matters to you.

The dinners were tasty using very fresh, local ingredients although could get a bit repetitive if you are there for more than a few days as they are mostly variations on the same buffet.

Amazing diving and snorkelling nearby via the dive centre in the hotel next door and a simply stunning beach (though swimming is difficult due to low water levels all along the east coast due to the reef around the island).

Recommend it, but has new hotel growing pains

This is a very new hotel and from what I saw of neighbouring resorts, this is a lot nicer. The managers, two Polish women, are fabulous and cater to your every need---totally amazing. We did have some issues and all were attended to promptly. The housekeeping staff were also very sweet and friendly.The lower rating was due to insect problems--not their fault. What was a major downfall was the restaurant service staff. Dirty dishes do not get cleared. At the pool, they can sit for hours. In the dining room, at times we moved them to an adjoining table ourselves. There are less staff than we have seen elsewhere, but they also need more training. Food was mediocre. The Bar BQ night was the best food of the buffet. The lunch, which is not buffet and which is an extra charge was better. Although they seem to make interesting desserts on the ala carte menu, the buffet dessert was poor and only one or maybe two selections. So, in the food and food service department, there is room for improvement. The area is very quiet, a honeymoon spot. Snorkeling and diving are available, but it is a 6 hour expedition, 8am-2pm. All the tours available are pretty much all day. We were told this hotel opened in December, then closed and got new management, so be aware of some of the earlier reviews. New management is working hard.

Etablissement a taille humaine, en bordure se plage, pas très loin de villages de pêcheurs. Personnel hyper gentil et serviable. Le restaurant est un peu trop \"International\" mais on peut manger un excellent poisson dans les restos de bord de plage. Un petit coin de paradis.

Fijn verblijf met heerlijk eten

Mooi, kleinschalig resort met heerlijk eten en genoeg entertainment. Enige nadeel is het openbare strand waar je snel lastig gevallen wordt door verkopers. Maar zolang je op het terrein van het hotel bent, is dit niet aan de orde. Heerlijk verblijf gehad!

Very nice hotel with a lot of attention to sustainability, you find water everywhere as there are safe water dispenser. Breakfast is very good and you do not need lunch. Dinner is a la carte and with classy style. Size of the hotel is not too big as like a village and you really feel that you are in Zanzibar just by walking on the beach. Everyday a new activity for recreation.

J’ai beaucoup aimé cet hôtel. Le service et le personnel est impeccable. La nourriture est également excellente, voire gastronomique. La plage est très belle. Seul point négatif, la baignade dans la mer était plutôt limitée en raison de la présence de nombreux oursins et algues. Mais sinon, je recommande fortement cet hôtel pour ceux qui recherchent la tranquillité.

Eine hervorragende Unterkunft. Anlage und Umgebung sind wunderschön; die Mitarbeiter sehr herzlich. Der Manager / Eigentümer war jederzeit vor Ort und hat sich regelmäßig nach dem Wohlbefinden seiner Gäste erkundigt - Wünsche und Feedback konnten jederzeit geäußert werden.
Wir hatten mit Halbpension gebucht. So gab es jeden Abend ein abwechslungsreiches 3-Gänge Menu. Auch hier war die Qualität top!

Perfect place to stay on your holiday in Zanzibar. Easy to book activities and tours. We had a bungalow/suite by the sea. Fantastic area and private. Nice pool area and good food. The staff was very nice and welcoming. Very good diving center close by and dives can be booked at the hotel. Will book again.

Lovely hotel, beautiful breathtaking views and very kind and serviceminded staff. The most kind I ever met in a hotel in Zanzibar. The only problem I have with this hotel is the expensive restaurant. It is double the price of any nice restaurant in Zanzibar and I don’t understand it. Its sort of Swedish prices wich is ok but than I would like to know staff also get swedish saleries which I highly doupt the have. I seriously think the restaurant should lower the prices. Beacause it pulls down the impression of the hotel and put a cloud over our stay. Other than that it was amazing. Oh by the way, this area is quiet and guests are too. Nothing party happening in the area and everybofy goes to bed at 9. So if you want some quiet time with breathtaking views and don’t mind paying a lot of money for food and drinks than this is the hotel for you.
