Separate toilet and shower rooms. No soap to wash your hands after you do your business, just a towel carelessly left over the tiny sink. Can we say germs!? The owners live on the top floor and every morning we were awakened early by their toddler racing and jumping across the their rooms over our bed. (None the less, she was very cute.)

It's in an excellent location, close to sites, restaurants, and subway station, yet quiet. The room was clean. The only thing is it does not have air conditioning. Even with the window open on 3rd floor, it was still quite warm at night. This was late August.

An easy hop on the metro, 2 stops southbound from the central station. We had a lovely time at the hotel. It's situated in a treelined neighbourhood, walking distance to museums, shopping, and a grocery store. Very relaxing.

Our stay at Hotel Asterisk was delightful! The Hotel is situated close to everything but in a lovely quiet neighbourhood. The family that run the Hotel went out of their way to make our stay memorable. They have a lovely dining room that accommodated our 8 friends, some staying in the hotel. We had a couple of get togethers here and dinner one night which really was above and beyond. We highly recommend staying at Hotel Asterisk.

Jackhammer noises and road construction behind the property were added ‘benefits’ that awaited our stay. Since there was no mention of this in any description or communication, and the rate was comparable to other high-end hotels in the area, it was quite an unwelcome surprise. It appeared that half the street had been torn up, with more work continuing throughout the day. We were told the construction had just started, but since we booked the room the day before our arrival, it was hard to believe they didn’t know it was happening.

Their remedy was: ‘So sorry, out of our control. All rooms are affected, so it won’t help to move you. We can offer you a beverage or a glass of wine. That’s it. Neither I nor my colleague before me has the authority to offer anything else.’

Moral of the story: ask about the situation before booking. This ‘family-run’ hotel—whatever benefit that’s supposed to imply—might mean you’ll be treated like anything but family.

Good value hotel (for Amsterdam) in a quiet street with good public transport options and near the Museum district.

No breakfast on offer but there is a nice lounge and an area that was probably used for breakfast in the past.

My single room in the annex building was unfortunately very noisy due to the machinery for the lift. I was hoping no one would come back late but my prayers didn't work and I had interrupted sleep up to about 3am. I bought some earplugs the next day after asking for a room move (none available) and the hotel desk not having any earplugs. I don't think they should use this room as I can't imagine anyone can sleep through the noise. I don't like earplugs and I removed them half way through the night. I then got woken up by someone leaving early! There's also the concern about sleeping through wakeup alarms and fire alarms.

I had a really lovely experience staying here. The gentleman that checked me in was very nice, professional and helped me when I needed an ice pack for an injury. My room was upgraded which was a very nice surprise, the shower and products were awesome. I also liked that it was close to Heineken and fairly close to a metro station. The only down side was that the building is very old and therefore the stairs/floors can be quite loud with people coming and going so I would suggest earplugs. There was seemingly also no AC in my room, it wasn’t too hot but I did need to use the fan they provided to sleep at night.

What a beautiful, spacious room! Great location, slightly away from the busy centers so you can rest, but close enough to jump right in when you’re ready! Very close to easy transport that takes you right into Dam Square and Central Station. I came in from the train and it was very easy to get to the hotel from public transit.
One word of caution, the building is older so there is only 1 lift (small) and very steep stairs. Would not recommend for ADA.

Charges for all extras including coffee.
Decent shower but only hand soap and shampoo, nothing more.

Room rates are comparable to other higher end properties on our European holiday.

In a quiet residential area and yet we were close enough to nearly everything to walk.
Excellent reception staff and someone available 24/7. I have Parkinson’s and they went out of their way to help me. This included assistance when I found the heavy doors hard to cope with including coming to take my case and other things down to the taxi in the early hours of the morning.
We stayed not in the main part of the hotel but in a separate house next door and it would have been helpful to have had disposable cups with lids to take coffees and teas back up to our rooms from where the drinks machine was situated in the lounge area in the main hotel. The “honesty” bar (you simply told them at check out time) where by you were responsible for paying for drinks, snacks, sweets taken during your stay seemed to work well certainly from a guest’s point of view, saving a lot of time and aggro. A bowl of fruit would have been nice alongside the crisps and sweet snacks also a jug of iced water by the coffee machine particularly in hot weather.
I had “comfy” single room which gave me just a bit more space, well designed wardrobe and shelving unit containing: safe, fan, simple light weight hair drier. kettle usual drink supplies (though no biscuits) and cardboard cups (environmentally friendly but not very tasty - better proper mugs and glasses.)
Spacious bathroom with good sized walk in shower, worked well mixing hot and cold water so no fear of getting burnt or frozen!
Good value.

I stayed here on two different occasions in May and June of 2025. It was a great location; close to transit, dining, museums, groceries, etc. It was quiet and comfortable and the staff was helpful and congenial. My first room was a single which was very small but just fine for one person. My second room was a double which was exceptional. Staircases were steep and narrow, which is to be expected in an older building in Amsterdam, but there were small elevators which made it easy to move luggage and tired travelers to the rooms.

This was a lovely hotel in a quiet area but still close to the action and the metro line. We walked everywhere and were able to grab the metro easily when needed. The office staff was very friendly and hekpful helpful with any questions we had. Our room was spacious. The elevator and staircases are very small since it’s an older property. Just an FYI in case it’s a problem for you.

When I arrived to the hotel for check in the sheets in my room were covered in stains and hair. They did change them for me, but I felt disappointed by this lack of cleanliness. The room was also significantly smaller than it appeared in photos. I could only open my smaller suitcase on the bed and in one small corner of the room. I felt as though this was not worth how much I paid.

I've been a visitor to Amsterdam for over twenty years, visiting 6 to 8 times a year for culture. I usually stay in the same 2 or 3 hotels near Concertgebouw but all were booked out this weekend so I was happy to try Asterisk for the first time, mostly based on the very positive reviews. The welcome was warm, I was given a hot towel on arrival (nice touch and great idea on this cold, rainy day). Young lady at reception was pleasant and helpful. Settling into Room 115 I suddenly noticed something odd. No toilet or bathroom. Just a wash hand basin. Confused, I checked my booking details on Hotels.com and confirmation email from Asterisk. Nothing to indicate no toilet or bathroom. Genuinely intrigued I went back to reception to be told I had to use the toilet and bathroom further down the corridor. Why I wasn't told this when I checked-in wasn't explained but 'apparently' I was informed previously by email. Having checked thro' my email, including spam and junk, nothing there by way of explanation. So for my 2-night stay I had to walk up and down the hotel corridor, past other guests' rooms, in order to use the toilet. I can't help thinking that because I was polite, courteous and friendly upon arrival, it was decided that the 'old fellow from Ireland' won't complain, so give him one of the nightmare rooms. Anyhow, a big, big pity. At my age I hate being taken for a fool so won't be staying at the Asterisk again. Please make sure you don't find yourself in the same situation

It's a nice family run location. We stayed in the apartment across the street from the hotel. It was relatively clean with a nice bathroom. The only issue was it was extremely hot. Not sure what kind of mattresses they are using, but I would wake up sweaty and stuck to the mattress. No AC in the room, only a small fan and because our room was on the ground floor, we were not comfortable leaving the patio door open at night. I would say a little pricey for what you get, no breakfast!

The staff were amazing. They were very kind, prompt, and helpful. However, the room was very small without a bed table or place to put luggage. The electrical outlets were all on the side of the room. They were also needed in the middle of the room. We paid for a room with a window, but the window was blocked by one of the signs on the building.

So happy we booked our stay in Amsterdam at Hotel Asterisk! First, our check in experience with Adam was a delight and he continued to be friendly and accommodating throughout our stay. Our room was large and quiet located in a building across the street from the main hotel. Our room overlooked a courtyard and it was nice and quiet even with the windows open! Location was close to everything - just a wonderful stay!

FANTASTIC place and super close to metro!!

FANTASTIC experience. The front desk was cordial from the very beginning and they took care of our questions and needs at all times.
The owner and his family live on premise and we ran into them a few times and they were absolutely great people. This property is super close to metro and about 30 minutes from the airport. We took an Uber to and fro to airport. Very convenient. Highly recommend choosing this property!!

The staff at this hotel are amazing and very helpful. The hotel is close to the metro and tram system although many of the museums, shopping, and attractions are within a 10 to 20 minute walk. This is located in a quiet area as well. The room was very clean and spacious with a nice carpet rather than hard floor that our other two hotels had. We appreciated the elevator to get our luggage to the third floor we were staying on. We would definitely stay here again!
