Overall, I enjoyed my stay at the Pousada Castelo de Obidos, but the castle experience didn’t feel worth the room price. The room was small, musty, and didn’t match the photos, and getting there from the train station was a hassle — better communication or a shuttle would have helped. That said, I loved Obidos and the castle’s location was perfect for sightseeing.

Everyone was very friendly and we loved the medieval village inside the castle walls. It is very charming and we enjoyed walking around at night. However while the room itself was very clean, we noticed in the morning (we may stayed one night) that our bed sheets were heavily stained along the corners. We took pictures and understand they’ve been passed on to management.

The town is quaint as well with shops. Had excellent meal in town and great breakfast at hotel. This was one of our favorite experiences!

Stunning setting in a centuries old tower and palace, excellent attentive staff, superb breakfast. ALERT: the property is inside a walled medieval village and not accessible by car or taxi. The hotel will meet you and bring you back to parking outside the walls.

Dining at the pousada leaves much to be desired. The staff was very attentive however it appears that the problem was in the kitchen. It took us about an hour and a half to get our order. I ordered a steak which was raw and was served with fried potato peels. My wife ordered risotto which was good. There were only two other tables with customers. There were also flies buzzing about the dining room.

Walking within castle was taxing . Too many steps .bad for my knees . Shd inform future guests about this. Amenities were also lacking - no kettle for boiling water, no bedroom slippers, no replenishment of water. Check in n check out took a long time. Only 1 porter who I must add was good . We had to wait for van n golf cart to bring luggage to our rooms . Only 1 van n 1 golf cart which starts only at 9 am. Having said all that, the views from the hotel was quite astounding n as a castle , it was interesting n quite beautiful. At breakfast only 1 service staff. The hotel is severely understaffed . The staff was helpful n good but not enough help. Area outside the hotel was nice n interesting with good restaurants n shops

Novel Experience

Beautiful location with a novel concept of “Staying inside the Castle”, it’s more like staying in a hotel room, inside the Castle walls. They created a touch of charm by adding a welcome treat and sharing a letter about one of the Queens. We received an access card into the Castle to view some of the rooms and restaurant. The shops and walking streets inside the Castle walls help to create a village atmosphere. Our room provided standard amenities but appeared old and tired (hair dryer).
No photos of the room as it lacked that WOW effect. We also notified the team via the app that we would be celebrating our 20th Anniversary (no special accommodations were made…for example, there was no note to say congratulations).
Breakfast was good, but for the price point I would have expected more. I would not recommend booking dinner in the Restaurant (there are lots of great places in the village). At check in we were provided a map with recommendations, that was incredibly helpful. The staff was friendly and polite. We enjoyed our ride into the village and leaving the village and getting to talk to the locals.

The pickup & dropoff service offered by the hotel (and specifically Guillerme) was exceptional! We truly enjoyed all of the amenities offered by the \"castle\" ~ a once in a lifetime experience! This is most likely the nicest hotel in Obidos, located in the former medieval Moorish Castle and subsequent Bishops Palace, in the heart of the old city. Note that you must park outside the walls in the free lot behind a nearby bank. The hotel provides a golf cart shuttle for your luggage. The rooms are comfortable. Good included breakfast in the Bishops Palace.

Experience a castle stay

Great hotel to experience the flavor of a historic castle, with many more creature comforts than the original inhabitants had. Clean and comfortable room, great bathroom, even a separate room for the bathtub! We were so impressed. Staff very kind and attentive. Parking is a bit interesting as it is outside the castle walls, but the reception responds quickly to transport you and luggage to your room, so no worries.

Need to know walking here is on cobblestones. Cars are not allowed. If staying at the castle you are walking with suitcases from the bottom to the top. Wear good shoes Lots to do within the castle. Other places to visit are about an hour away

Dreadful, this place is not worth the money. If you HAVE to stay in Obidos, choose somewhere cheaper. This place has zero soundproofing in the rooms, you can hear absolutely everything your neighbours are up to, from using the bathroom, having a conversation to midnight fun & games. Staff are wonderful as is the breakfast, but unless you pay top $$$ for the most expensive Castle rooms, it’s not worth the money. For two nights, we had a total of 7hrs sleep - dreadful.

Timing for my trip was unfortunate due to the Christmas fair that was taking place immediately beside the hotel.

Parking was impossible; the hotel had not contacted me with instructions on where to park & how to contact them when I arrived.

The hotel is very hard to find, but fortunately, I asked a kind shopkeeper to assist me.

The trek up to the hotel is long, steep, and over cobblestones.

The hotel was fine. I would not consider it 5 Stars. The service was good. The room was small, it did not feel like we were staying in a Castle.

The hotel does not have parking , you park 5 min away and they send a car to pick you up. Pack light, you will have issues with large luggage. The village does not allow anyone to park inside.

I would consider spending less money in another hotel nearby.

This is a legit castle that you can walk around and explore. The medieval city within the walls was amazing to see and explore. The food options, drinks, wines and shops were plentiful and all perfect. The people were so friendly and helpful. The city locals and tourists all combine in this area to chat over a glass of wine. The views of the city are breathtaking. I would highly highly recommend this property for a one of a kind stay in a real castle.
Being a real castle, the rooms are not the most soundproof, but quiet enough. It’s your room neighbors that could keep you up. Parking is not the easiest as the streets are tight and crowded during peak times. Otherwise, this is a great place.

Location within the castle is quite unique, and very accessible to the main street of town. Employees were very friendly. Garden room was very nice. Two areas requiring improvement: The tower room was unlivable due to the terrible mustiness and lack of windows in order to air out the room. We had to move to a garden room. The tower room should not be considered 4-star accommodation. Second: The climb up from the recommended parking area is too steep for middle age to older guests, even using the hotel's suggestion of having small luggage. The hotel should offer transportation. We did get a van lift down to the parking area at the end of our stay but it was done using a delivery van and we were told this service is not normally offered to guests.

We booked a room at the castle for just one night. We found hair from previous guests in the shower. The tile caulk had some moldy stains as well. The water glass in the restroom had toothpaste residues.
We told the staff but their response was a simple “we are sorry”. The room service and maintenance wasn’t worth the price paid (over $400/night with taxes).
The village is beautiful and totally worth it. We will choose a different place next time though.

First, remember that it IS inside a castle. It is NOT the Four Seasons. That said, here are some and - points:
staff could not have been sweeter or more helpful!
you will DEFINITELY feel like you are in a castle; it’s COOL:
location is perfect for strolling the shops, bars and restaurants and you can hop on the “wall” from anywhere.
the associated restaurant is amazing; you just have to be able to navigate all the stairs leading up to it.

- First of all, the description of this hotel is very flawed. The “lounge” and “bar” consist of some tables, chairs, and umbrellas outside. The desk guy will bring you wine or beer but the only food or snacks available are ice cream bars in a frig outside.
- These rooms are DEFINITELY not “sound proof.” In my 1st night there, I could not go to sleep until the person above me did. Until then, I heard every step he took, every item he dropped or pushed across the floor. Of course, I also woke up when he/she did. I told them about it at the front desk and they moved me to a more quiet room. It was a much smaller room than I had paid for but I didn’t care, as long as I could sleep peacefully. And I did. Up until 11 pm when all heck broke loose with drilling and pounding right outside my door. I called the front desk but they were unaware of any repairs being done. I heard her come up and talk to the guy and by midnight, the noise had stopped.
- Yes, it is a castle, but be prepared for extremely poor lighting.

It was very confusing to determine where to park and how to get to the Pousada, as no cars are allowed. Once we figured that out, a van picked us up in the designated place and took us to the top of the village to the reception area for the hotel. There are a lot of stairs, so not a good place for those with mobility issues. The room was very cozy and the staff were very friendly. Breakfast was included, but you have to walk up some steep stairs to get to the restaurant. Overall we really enjoyed the town, but not sure the expense of the hotel was worth it.

How often can you say you stayed in a castle? As mentioned before, there are a lot of stairs, but it’s worth it to have the experience! Our room was across the hall from an outdoor balcony, which overlooked the area. My husband took a walk around the castle wall in the morning, which he enjoyed. Breakfast was lovely. Overall a nice stay in a beautiful town.

False information about their property

I chose this property because they indicate \"Free onsite self parking\". Actually the whole village is not allow outsiders' cars to enter the village gate. The property sent me an email 3 days before our check-in, simply said welcome, never mentioned anything about how to get there. We arrived at Obidos village gate before 7pm & drove into village according Google Map. The up and down driving on narrow stone road is very difficult. We finally got to the gate, but the gate is locked. We did not have a local map in paper. So we had to use Google Map and try to figure out how to get to the hotel by other route. It was getting dark. The narrow streets are very steep and slippery, and most of them are one way road. It was very stressful and scary experience. We tried to call the property. But the phone number they give is for loacal callers only. We use Roger's roaming as home program and must mak international call to the property. By 8pm, we finally found the entry of their property. The receptionist was super rude and denied all the facts. My husband had to drove the car outside the village and walked back up to the hill top. It was near 9pm. This property has a restaurant onsite. But they simply decided not open on that day. Other restaurants in the village all closed before or at 9pm. So we could not have dinner. I called hotels.com about it. In the property's respond, they are still insisted that they have parking but fully occupied by other customers.

A special experience. A beautiful hotel with medieval motifs combined with modern comfort. A large room decorated with a magical atmosphere. Heartfelt and exclusive service. It's a shame that all the details are not taken care of. The coffee table is peeling and the toilet paper is cheap. A room with 2 beds and a window was specially ordered and we received a room with one bed without a window. Other than that it was perfect.

We spent two hours looking for our car when we left because the hotel personnel had moved it to a better space but didn’t communicate it to us. That’s unacceptable.

The experience of staying in an old castle was amazing. The lounge areas are very comfortable, I could even have a couple of business video calls there, while enjoying the complimentary tea and cookies
The restaurant were we had breakfast is amazing, it was the dinner hall of the castle and you can feel like in the Middle Ages. Views from there are beautiful, we had dinner one evening and it was very good too
You can start the walk over the ramparts right outside the hotel, it’s a must, you can circle around the whole town enjoying the amazing views
The only con: we asked for a room inside the castle ( we thought it would be more charming), but the rooms there are too small, no closets and the bathroom was so small that the water form the shower was flooding the whole bathroom
We asked to be moved to another room ( this was outside the castle, they have another wing next to the reception), and this was great: ample and comfortable
The ginginha ( sour cherry brandy) little bottle as a gift was a nice touch too
There is no better way to enjoy the Obidos medieval ambience than staying in this hotel

Little parking and nobly brings in your luggage. You carry your own luggage over Corcle stones because you have to park outside the castle. The person inside who Cattie your luggage up 25 stairs was wonderful throughout our stay. We ate dinner in a beautiful hotel restaurant, and they had one lovely waitress for the entire dining room. Give me a break. The food was very good. I loved Óbidos and it shouldn’t be missed, but come for the day and don’t stay over.

Nice opportunity to stay physically inside the castle, albeit the back side and with no real views from the rooms themselves, but still a very nice room! Very comfortable bed, modern bathroom, lovely soaking tub from tired muscles spent climbing the millions of stairs in Obidos!

The only downsides to our stay were:
1. Really no actual parking on site or near the hotel despite \"Parking\" listed (we had to haul our suitcases quite a distance), so don't do this if you're handicapped or not up for a lot of walking and carrying!

2. Saturday, September 16th 2023 was probably a terrible night for the kitchen staff in the restaurant because the dinner was also pretty terrible. I could imagine Gorden Ramsey filming an episode of \"Kitchen disasters\" back there, yelling at the staff and saying things like \"This is BURNT! This is OVERCOOKED! What is THIS?!\" and so on. I can only imagine they had a bad night or something and maybe the food is better the rest of the time, but caveat emptor on the food! Location, nice!

It was very difficult to get to the hotel. Once the taxi drops you , you need to walk about 10 min with your heavy luggage all the way up to the hotel.
We got a very tiny room with 2 small windows, it felt like a basement.
The castle is beautiful but not sure if it’s worth the price to this hotel . Staff were friendly.

This is a unique hotel located inside a castle which we loved. As others have mentioned in othe reviews the parking may be and issue since it's outside the medieval castle walls. It's not far but could be an issue if you have mobility issues. The staff were very helpful with luggage and check-in and gave us recs for town. This is a very small but beautiful town set almost entirely within the castle walls so everything was within walking distance from the hotel. We were alson fortunate enough to be there during holy week and witnessed a church processional through town that included massive candles and a band. Very neat experience all around.

This is a 1000 year old castle. It is impressive in every way in a homey sort of way. The shuttle from parking to our room and back was very helpful. The restaurant was excellent for dinner and the included breakfast. There is an area in front of the reception area that overlooks the town with tables and chairs where they serve drinks. The bathroom is small, but the shower is powerful with plenty of hot water. The staff was very pleasant, from the shuttle driver to the reception to the dining room staff. It is an unique experience.

Medieval royal experience? More like a medieval nightmare! There’s no way for cars to access the castle because of the festival. The back gate to the resident parking lot is closed for reason behind my comprehension. This means residents need to drag their heavy luggages through uneven cobblestone pavement through the festival crowd all the way from the front wall entrance to the castle!!! The staff was nice enough to give us a ride with the company car the night of check in and promised to help again when we checked out…but as expected, on the day of check out, they did not have the car available and simply offered an insincere apology for the inconvenience. Hence, my husband and I had to drag our heavy luggages like some peasants through the streets and then the gravel filled parking lot to get to our car. If the hotel were any serious about hospitality, it wouldn’t ask the paying guests to go through such hassle for the stay. I wanted to like Óbidos but this hotel definitely ruined this town for me.
To add the cherry on top of this nightmare of a stay, we were locked OUT and then IN the room because the door lock is so old that it gets stuck!
Definitely will not return to this hotel or recommend it to anybody! Very unhappy customer!

Castle with a view

We stayed in the castle, and it was a fun, unique experience. Gorgeous views from the terrace! Very grateful a staff member helped us with our bags (the stairs are tiny). Fun experience!

The room was a basement type accommodation- smelled of mold and very spartan. We expected some discomfort being a Medieval Castle property but we were in an annex quite a distance from the main castle and more distant still from the restaurant. On the positive the breakfast was excellent with many choices of cereals, breads and fruits. Overall a 3 star property.

We were greeted with champagne and very friendly and helpful staff. We had a personal assistant to show us the property and room which was a tower. It was a once in a life time experience and the breakfast was incredible. Just keep in mind, no elevators and if you have mobility issues, don't book the tower. Lots of steps and hills but I would go there again and again. Totally fab.

It’s fun to brag about that one stayed at a castle but this wasn’t a comfortable stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful, so that was a plus. But there were a lot of issues - parking lot for the hotel is not clearly marked and is shared by public parking for the castle itself. It’s a decent 200 m walk on cobble stone roads - so be careful in carrying your luggage. Once at reception, staff are very helpful and carry luggage to the room. But, the room itself is small, very dark as expected due to small windows from the era but had limited lamps/artificial lighting, the carpet and bathroom shower were unclean and moldy. The room didn’t have enough space to conveniently put the luggage. The breakfast in the morning was a buffet but there were no servers to guide or help, and lot of the fruits had flies hovering over. The town is quaint and beautiful but overpriced for both the hotel and the restaurants within the town. In retrospect, we would have just visited it for a few hours rather than overnight.

Beautiful view, friendly staff and great breakfas.

The castle is really great to walk around. The breakfast spread was good. Some tables by window has spectacular views. Our room was simple with a great view of the castle tower and courtyard. The bed was not comfortable, however, with a creaky mattress and a headboard designed for a much taller bed. It’s very confusing and vague about parking. We couldn’t find the road to the Pousada so we ended up parking on the side of a road and climb up with our luggages. It’s fun to say I stayed in a castle, but it’s a little overrated to stay in this castle.

This was by far one of the most stunning places to stay. The rooms are small as they must be but they are clean and well maintained. Also the decor is depicts the location. The restaurant is beautiful for breakfast and dinner.

Walking the entire castle wall is breathtaking.

Hotel for a royal couple

A special hotel, located in a palace that is part of the city wall. Excellent and quiet room in a royal style. Very clean rooms. The hotel staff is courteous and welcoming. The hotel is located on the main street of the city, close to restaurants and shops

New management needs some help!

This location is very difficult to drive into with a full size rental car! There was no indication of where to legally park and no one to help us transfer our bags to the check in area which was also hard to find! While the location was stunning and the room we had was very comfortable, you should definitely contact the hotel before arriving and get clear driving instructions beforehand. If you plan to arrive by taxi it may be easier.

It’s management has been taken over by Pestana, a large hotel group in Portugal and I fear it will take a while to bring back the atmosphere of the old Posada. At the moment it seems understaffed and even checking in once we got there took a long time since there was only one person to check in people and get their bags to the rooms!

We stayed in the castle tower which is totally worth the extra money for that experience alone. Lovely breakfast, dining restaurant was closed due to Covid. The shops and restaurants within the wall town were a delight

Stunning, truly special location

The location is truly stunning and we felt very privileged to be staying right in the Castelo itself. Our room was surprisingly spacious and very comfortable, with all amenities we could have hoped for. The management sent us helpful information ahead of our stay, telling us how to enter the castle wall and where to park, and staff are ready to assist with carrying bags up the few stairs to one's room. We found all staff professional and helpful. The restauarnt is a spectacular location with lovely views, although the dinner for was ever so slightly disappointing.

Staff is excellent - very helpful in all respects. Hotel is in the thick of the action at the top of the main shopping/restaurant street. Remember this is a castle retrofitted with modern conveniences. Access by car is not for the faint of heart but eminently doable.
