I booked Hilton Durban after seeing it listed among the top hotels in the city, and it definitely lives up to its reputation, especially if you’re in town for business or attending a convention. The hotel offers a long list of amenities, including an impressive unlimited breakfast and dinner for around R150, a spa, salon services for nails and hair, a pool, and room service available until 10pm. Convenience is truly at your fingertips. My room was spacious, clean, and well-designed, with a firm and comfortable bed that made winding down easy. The WiFi could be stronger, but it was stable enough for general browsing and work. One thing to note is the location. While it’s ideal for conferences and business stays, the surrounding area isn’t very walkable and there isn’t much to do nearby if you’re hoping to explore on foot. That said, the staff were exceptional—warm, welcoming, and full of suggestions for things to do and places to visit around Durban. Overall, I’d recommend Hilton Durban for business travelers or anyone attending an event in the area. For leisure travelers looking for restaurants, nightlife, or a more scenic setting right outside the door, you may need to Uber around, but the comfort and service here make the stay worthwhile.

Lovely hotel but a ways to go

Recently reopened, it’s very clean and in good shape. Great location for my needs and beautiful, quiet, comfortable room.
What shows that it’s been closed for a period of time are the level and quality of service.
Restaurant and housekeeping staff are very friendly and earnest although apparently inexperienced. There’s not the same welcoming vibe by the guys at the door and concierge desk that was renowned in years past. Check in was not great as my room wasn’t ready until well after 3pm and then there was some confusion.
The food is not up to the standard it was at before it closed and the selection and availability of restaurant hours is reduced.
They are clearly trying to get up to speed and we’ll likely give them another go next year.

Downside was room location, there was very loud music from cultural events playing from the exhibition centre each of the 3 nights, very disappointing as we have a child land we all had problems sleeping before the curfew

A nice hotel but the service has a lot to be desir

Upon check-in we had quite a few problems
One of them was down to a very rude stuff member behind the counter. They told us to sit down and wait. When we eventually got our room we found that someone had already been in the room and had left all their possessions in the room we reported this to staff and admittedly they did upgrade us to a better room and gave us executive lounge access which improved our perception of Hilton however we found that the room service was particularly slow especially when ordering food to the room so honestly I don't think we would stay Hilton again based on that experience we paid a significant amount of money for a 3 nights stay. We obviously expected better for a large chain like Hilton it was really disappointing the only positive thing I have to say is that one of the reception staff was very helpful later on in the week.

I spent one night at the Hilton and chose that Hilton because it was close to the cruise port where I was joining a ship the next day.
The hotel arranged a driver to collect me from the airport who was exceptional. My luggage was lost and the flight was late and he waited for me and was absolutely charming. The staff at check in were so polite, kind and personable. There wasn’t a single member of staff who did not greet me every time I saw them.
The hotel is spotless. I was told by one member of staff it was an old hotel but my room was beautiful and big. I recently stayed in a 4 star hotel in london which was a third of the size and four times the price.
As I had no luggage I was pleased to see the Crabtree and Evelyn products.
I asked the advice of where to go shopping and the front desk sorted an uber for me. I had a lovely meal in the evening and the breakfast was good with lots of variety.
To be honest I travel all the time and it was great to feel completely safe as a solo traveller and to be in a really spotless environment. Sadly as I had no luggage I couldn’t use the gym or pool.
The other Hilton is near the amazing Mall I visited but I wanted to be near the cruise terminal and could literally see my ship from my window.
The staff make the hotel and are a credit to the Hilton brand.

A PREVIOUSLY 5 star hotel , now a 3 Star at best

Arrived at the hotel at 130pm, I was told check in is at 3pm but they will arrange a room at 2pm which never happened , finally got the key at 250pm, only 1 lift in this more than 12 floor hotel was operational for most of my stay, so you can expect long lift delays when it is busy , requested additional towels from housekeeping which never came, after 130 am the room phone would ring twice & cut off, I tried calling reception to find out what the problem was but it seem staff took the the night off, finally at 3am I had to put the phone off the hook, this hotel can now be classified as an ex 5 star hotel downgraded to a 3 star, staff are not professional either in customer services,

It’s a beautiful hotel. I understand since Covid they had been closed till last month so a lot of work is being done to get things running. Some few things may not be working well but generally I loved the place. Their restaurant meal has so many options especially for breakfast. Chefs are all very friendly and ready to get you something of your choice which is not necessarily on the menu for dinning or lunch options. The staff are great from waiters and waitress in the restaurant to all staff in the lobby to room service. I was treated like a queen. Thank you Hilton. They are my best option for hotels in any country unless there’s none☺️

Disappointed Hilton Stay

I was extremely disappointed with the overall service considering this hotel is rated as a 5-star hotel.
It took 3 attempts to make telephonic contact with the reception desk when calling to enquire about the parking options. When I arrived at the hotel, the elevator to the lobby was out of service. The key card system was offline so had to be escorted to the room and the key delivered later. The furniture looked very poor and had water damage. There were stains on the curtain that looked like blood. Water was leaking from the ceiling that woke us which I reported and was promised that a service person would come to follow up which never materialized. I ordered a halaal meal for a specific time at breakfast as suggested by your hotel guide however when I got to the restaurant, there was no special catering waiting for me and my wife. I am sure that Hilton will just offer a standard response as usual and not make up for this poor experience.

Most of the staff was great pleasant friendly. Whatever I ate was great and tasty, however almost everyday they ran out of something or the appliance did not work and so on. Not really the standard of a Hilton hotel. You could not see the bottom of the pool as it was foggy. The windows dirty and by the pool a glass windshield was broken or missing and it is clear it has been missing for a long time. There were amenities displayed on the cctv which did not exist or work. The restaurant opening times changed without notice. there was no draft beer for 5 of the 9 days we were there. Clearly management lacks or funds do. But I still had a very good time. Initially when we got there we were assigned a room on the 1st floor but then the porter said no!! we need to get you a better room and he did. Interesting when we got to our room now on the 9th floor it seemed that some one was just there. There was a half drunken bottle of water in the room... funny things like that happened regularly.

Breakfast experience needs a notch up at this Hilton. Kids are not catered for... no coco pops, chocolate donuts. 'Models' need to hold the coffee flasks and serve coffee at your table.. instead of us guests walking to find it. Location of this hotel is at a good vantage point.

Great hotel, service needs work

The hotel was lovely and room 1217 was very comfortable.

There were however service and training issues:-

1. We arrived late with a tired 8 year old and reception had no record of my checking in via booking.com. The process was frustrating and I had to tell the clerk to please hurry as we had a tired child
2. At the elevator. We waited, with the sleeping child. The first elevator we let others take. We were then the only people waiting. The elevator took a while. When the elevator arrived another group arrived as well and our bellhop then helped them in and blocked us from entering. I objected and said \"Are you serious? We were waiting already.\" He seemed intimidated by the other people but eventually told them to get out of the elevator as we were there first.
3. I ordered 3 beers from room service. When room service brought these to me they were sealed and there was no bottle opener in the room. The room service person was not prepared, had no bottle opener. She agreed to get an opener. Which she brought to me 15 minutes later. Then took away and said I would have to call to open the other bottles. This after 11pm.

More is exoected from a 5 star hotel than a great piece of architecture and decor. Staff should be better trained and should want to help rather than react as if customers are an imposition

I must hiwever commend the chef making the omelletes (01 Dec breakfast) for his personality and eagerness to help. Please convey my thank you to him.

It’s a 5 start and deservedly so! The only downside was that our room was on the second floor and the was an event at the Durban ICC, so sound blasting through the speakers was a bit too much if you just wanted to relax. But overall it’s a great comfortable hotel.

Booked my whole team into the hotel for a project we executed at ICC over a week. Thoughts consistent across 7 people. Lifts are slow and horrific, really bad software or something, but slow and anywhere near peak times adds 15min to your exit time. Breakfast good, but often run out (they bring more, but more waiting). And our last night had a street music something outside that could be heard across all our rooms until early hours. Simply not good enough for a business hotel.

However, great bed, great wifi, great shower and fantastic staff. These are good things done well. Hotel revamped since I last stayed there, so felt fresh still and after a week was good.

Hilton Durban for the win!

We had a wonderful stay at Hilton Durban, from the friendly pick-up from the airport to check-out, the staff were great. The ADA accessible rooms were perfect. It is fantastic that luxury was not sacrificed for utility on that front. Everyone was extremely helpful and the breakfast was excellent. Only a ten minute walk to the beach, which is pristine.

The staff are very friendly and helpful - from check-in, to concierge to cleaning staff.
The room is nice and big, but the bathroom is very small with the toilet half a meter away and right in front of the shower.

It is a nice facility with a lot of staff. The rooms were spacious and clean. The Big Easy restaurant was a nice place to go to do a bit of work. The basic wifi could have been a lot better connected and faster—not really good on the patio. UBER arrives quickly as there is not yet much else around hotel yet. Beautiful, pioneering facility though. Loved the architecture.

Horrendous service, far from 5 star

Certainly does not live up to 5 star rating. On arrival, had to wait for 10 minutes before checking in. Then there were no porters available to take our luggage to our room. I asked about parking in the hotel and was told to exchange the parking ticket for a paid parking ticket. On the 4th day of my stay I was informed that parking is chargeable at R95 a day. I've never stayed in a hotel that asked me to pay for parking, let alone a 5 star hotel. This was rectified only after speaking to the manager. Stayed in a family room. Towels were short everyday. Complained everyday, however it was the same story the following days. Breakfast had very little choice, and even less vegetarian options. New catering students had just started the day we arrived. Had to ask for coffee/spoon etc more than 3 times. Breakfast was too chaotic with the new students. Vanessa at breakfast was however a breath of fresh air. She absolutely echoed the 5 star service that the others lacked. Lindo at reception was another star. Maureen in housekeeping too. Room was spacious. Shower was the smallest I've seen in a hotel thus far. Unfortunately no towels are given if you are going to the beach. 1 lift was out of order for the entire week we stayed there. Definitely disappointed with the lack of service at the Hilton. Doubt I will stay there again.

Stay was good but one of the windows were broken then we had to move rooms after 10pm.

Then at check out at the desk we are told to be R65 for using the mini bar for drinking a red bull but since we diabetic we don’t drink red bull.

To make matters worse the paid parking was R155 for the night, the securicty guard asked us how much we got and we gave his R50 and he let us out. The Hilton Durban she be graded as a 2 star.

One thing I should compliment them is on their staff besides their excellent fluency they all look like they walked out of the cat walk well the ones I have seen with perfect grooming and carried themselves well.

The hotel has lost its star rating, the rooms

The hotel is not as luxurious as it used to be, the bathrooms have things that don't work, like the light or extractor fan. Rooms not cleaned early enough, one day it was cleaned in the afternoon , then there would be no towels, and that would come much later. The breakfast is not as varied and fancy as it used to be. The toaster was not working and there would be an unnecessary que. fried eggs are made early and left for you to take. And no beach towels are provided unlike other hotels that's have them.

Room was not ready at check-in time, then they gave us the wrong room (not sea-facing), let us stay in the wrong room till the correct room was ready, and then had to move across.

Despite paying an arm and a leg per day, you still need to pay additional fee for parking per day as a hotel guest.

Restaurant service not great. Had to ask for everything, where in a 5 star hotel you expect the staff to be on their toes and anticipate the guests needs.

The hotel is in excellent shape. The rooms are nice and the beds comfortable. The amenities are numerous. We had free appetizers and drinks daily from 3 to 5 p.m. and adult drinks and appetizers from 6 to 10 p.m. daily. The breakfast was excellent too!

Not the best experience I have had a 5 star hotel

Arrived late to find the only rooms available were two single beds which wasnt the end of the world. However the bar staff's attitude when requesting a nightcap was totally unacceptable. Trying to have a drink in a 5 star hotel at 10:45 should not be a big ask.
The hotel gym was ok and the breakfast had everything you would expect.
Finally you would not expect to pay for wifi at an business hotel.

The best for Business and Family

The Ocean View. Breakfast and Wifi. Friendly staff members. When you are on business, there is no alternative to the Hilton Hotel in Durban. Taxi Cabs are safe, and there is no night in Durban - Just like New York or Miami.
