My stay was great. The room was generously sized and clean. The location was wonderful - right in the heart of the medina and near everything. The staff couldn't have been more helpful at every turn - really pleasant and good humoured. The breakfast was slightly different every day and was exactly what was needed to set you up well for the day. All in all it was a great experience and I would definitely stay there again when I'm next in Rabat.

I had late night check in because of my flight and I had to call the manager - several times before he answered. Also on informing him that the air conditioner was not working he said it was. Next day I got a change of room (which was fairly cleaner than the previous one) because the attendee Ahmed checked to confirm it wasn’t working. A day after work when I came they transferred everything without my presence and confirmation back to the old room. And seeing it in daylight made me totally uncomfortable. I didn’t take the breakfast on any of the days at the Riad.

Tiny rooms nowhere near a five-star property!

The rooms are a two-stars standard, not five !!

The riad is very nicely located — in the Medina but not too far from outside. The interior is really nicely decorated. Plenty of beautiful common spaces and a nice rooftop. For that the hotel could be a four-stars standard. The staff is friendly.

But while I don’t know the legal standards for Morocco to grant five stars to a property, everywhere in the world the standards include a minimum ROOM SIZE. As someone who spends one third of his life on hotels, I can tell you the room sizes are two-stars — it’s the kind of room size you would find at Ibis Budget, not even at Holiday Inm Express! I am not trying compare apples with oranges — this is an old town typical Riad — but the reason I chose a five-stars property instead of four or three (and paid more accordingly) was exactly room size and room comfort.

Whoever renovated this building did a great job at imagining the beautiful furniture and decorations. But they forgot that the rooms also need to accommodate guests and their baggage…

My son and I couldn’t move around the room at the same time — one had to make space for the other. The suitcase couldn’t be anywhere lying flat (other than on the bed). The twin beds were about 80 cm wide. No space to put things. No space to put my toiletries bag in the bathroom.

Enjoyable 3-Day Stay

We had a wonderful 3-day stay. The staff was so accommodating. Big shout-out to Hamid, the concierge for most of our stay and also our server for a delicious dinner. He was professional and friendly. Also to Ahmed, who carried bags for 8 of us up and down stairs, poured Moroccan tea, and was engaging in conversation. Younis also made sure we were well taken care of. The rooms were pretty and comfortable, the courtyard was clean and lovely and we loved the rooftop glasses of wine and conversation with our group. Fun to wind through the streets of the medina to find our way back after excursions. We felt totally safe in the medina, day and night.

We had a very pleasant and relaxing stay. The whole team makes you feel welcomed and is helpful whatever your need. We arrived quite late in the night and the manager was still here to welcome us.

My only suggestion Dar el Kébira's team would be to be careful not to speak too loud early in the morning.

Dar el Kebira exceeded my expectations and hopes. I stayed for four heavenly nights at this wonderful establishment tucked just inside the medina and would return in a heartbeat.

After my transportation, arranged by Dar el Kebira, dropped me, Yunez warmly welcomed me and led me to the property where Safoune welcomed me again, reviewed an excellent map with me and ensured I would settle in pleasantly.

Thrilled by the elegant interior decoration complementing the stunning centuries old tiles and fretwork, I retired to my large and inviting room. There were all the little special touches such as bottled water, bathrobes and flip flops, making my stay that much more comfortable.

Their restaurant features superb Moroccan cuisine; actually some of the best I've had in three weeks of traveling in Morocco. They sometimes make homemade yogurt included in their sumptuous breakfast.

They provided laundry service, specific maps and guidance. Every person who works there is truly lovely, friendly and welcoming. Safouane was like a gracious host welcoming you to his home.

I loved everything about Dar el Kebira and believe you will too.

Nice small hotel with excellent service by the staff. Just remember that this is a small hotel, no access by taxi or car. You must walk a fair distance to get to hotel. Hotel is not very close to any restaurants or sites. Very narrow street. No elevator with a lot of stairs. Would not recommend for disabled or low mobility.

Lovely decorated hotel in the heart of Medina

The hotel is very beautifully decorated and the staff very welcoming and helpful. The restaurant is also very good, although expensive, and you can have the same meals at half price elsewhere. The rooms are pretty basic and there’s a bit of stuffy smell with the bed, due to old furnitures. Breakfast is also good, although if you arrive later than other guests you get served cold crepes, instead of recently cooked ones, which are a hard bite. Overall a pleasant stay for a few nights stay.

Beautiful Riad in the medina

This is a very beautiful Riad... we enjoyed our stay there. We stayed here for one night on our return trip from Marrakech and didn’t have s lot of time, but enjoyed the beautiful courtyard, rooftop, and had a very nice meal in the restaurant. Our room was not one of the suites and was a spec small for the price. Also, there was a used bar of soap in the shower that was a bit disconcerting. Outside of these two things, the place was wonderful. The free breakfast is huge and delicious. We had a fabulous dinner in the restaurant where the chicken pastilla was one of my favorite bites from my entire trip.

Authentic experience

The Riad is in a good location inside the Rabat Madina. The staff including Noel were super helpful and very friendly. The food was fantastic for breakfast. Our room was comfortable and very authentic. My only concern with the room is that the glasses were not very clean, we had to wash them before using them. The taxi service they use is significantly more expensive than local options so I would avoid booking anything through the Riad.

A beautiful Riad to stay

If you want traditional Moroccan hospitality and service, this is the Riad to book. Located a few minutes walk away from the sea, historical buildings, Andalusian Gardens and the local bazar in the Medina.
The staff try their upmost to cater for your requirements and needs. Inhouse dinning is delicious. And there are lots of restaurants nearby to try out. I loved the traditional Riad atmosphere. Its not same as a commercial 5 star hotel. Its something different for those who want a little variety in their travels.

Outdated dirty hotel staffed by ghosts

This hotel looks nice in pictures but in reality it is a dusty dirty run down riad. The staff were unhelpful and no where to be found. We saw them three times - twice to demand money and once when we were leaving with heavy bags. They said goodbye and offered no help. I guess they had already been paid. The breakfast on the terrace was dismal. Our room was on the main floor off the main area so it was noisy and didn't feel private. It's bathroom was filthy. We were provided flip flops from previous guests to protect our feet from the dirty molding shower floor. The shower doors didn't work correctly and allowed the floor to flood with water. Overall not a good experience at all. Find something else.

So glad we had a ½ day in Rabat before coming back for our stay. The riad is hard to find, and far from the street where taxi let us out. The receptionist gave us her card & told us to call when we arrived on taxi. The driver made the call for us, then someone came to help us carry luggage through narrow, winding roads to the riad. It would have been a challenge without help. Staying there is not for the mobility impaired- lots of stairs! Fine for us, but could be difficult for some. The place is beautiful, the welcome warm and hospitable.

Nice riad, but not the one advertised

When we arrived at the Dar El Kebira hotel, were were told that we had a room at \"Dar El Kebira 2\" and were escorted to another hotel a few streets away, where we seemed to be the only guests. The hotel is a fine traditional riad, but the decor was nothing like what I chose based on the photos. We had paid an upgrade for a deluxe room with a bathtub, but the room we were given had a tiny bathroom and only a shower stall. It didn't seem right at all. My husband managed to sleep, but I didn't, in part because I was kept up by the smell of the furniture (apparently freshly varnished) and the sheets, which were some of the roughest I can recall anywhere. The staff at the hotel was very helpful and professional during our two-day stay and the hostess was sympathetic when I complained about the hotel switch, but for me, it wasn't enough. Instead of advertising their new hotel transparently, the upper management seemed to do a bait-and-switch on unsuspecting guests. The bottom line is, if you book a room at the riad shown on the photos, don't count on getting a room there.

OK Hotel experience

Our stay at Dar El Kébira was OK. The bellman was very nice and very helpful. The hotel is a bit into the Medina so you cannot drive to it, and we ended up having to pay off a police man and a young man to let us through and help us carry our bags to the hotel. The room itself was slightly dirty, and had an odd smell. However it was also spacious and suited our needs for the one night. Breakfast on the roof was fantastic. They did however give us a VERY hard time for asking to pay with Credit Card at check out, even though it was never mentioned until checkout that cash was needed. They also had a card machine so I don't understand why using card was a problem. The check out experience left a lot to be desired because of this.

Wonderful oasis in heart of medina

The décor was tasteful and well thought-through, the room was comfortable and luxurious and the breakfast on the sunny terrace delicious. We had a last minute late arrival, and the staff was incredibly accommodating and helpful. We treated ourselves to the hammam and massage package, and it was worth every penny. Highly recommend Dar El Kebira as an oasis of peace and comfort for your next getaway in the heart of the Rabat medina!

Old Riad, needs upgrading

The worst hotel and the most expensive on our three week trip to Morocco. We booked through Hotels.com and at check in, were given a room that was like a closet. No windows or any natural light coming in at all. The double bed was up a very unsafe small steps with a small closet sized bathroom downstairs. When we complained that the room was not acceptable, we were shown a better room off the main waiting area which was acceptable. Then when we got our bags from the dungeon, we were told that this room was not available. We were then shown a room in the back with a full size short bed, old velvet bedspread and makeshift bathroom. At this point, it was late in the evening and we did not have a choice to walk around the medina to find another hotel. Very uncomfortable night. At breakfast, we were 10 mins late and were told off by the staff serving up on the terrace. Yet there were people there having breakfast. We were served coffee and bread with jams. All done in a surly manner.
This was the first time in Morocco to get a room that was very unpleasant and very surly service. Never again. The place is old and needs upgrading. The sofas in the waiting area have stains on them and the curtains are coming off the hooks.

Gorgeous hotel in the medina

The boutique hotel is simply amazing. Beautifully decorated, located right in the medina with fresh fruits in the room, welcoming mint tea and dates with nuts, this hotel was our favorite! We felt treated like a royal family at breakfast served upstairs overlooking the old city. What a memorable first day in Morocco.

Just one note, the taxi can't drive in the narrow streets of medina, so be prepared to roll your luggage for 5 min or so.

Pros and Cons of the Riyad

Recently stayed there a week. Cons: Beware of hotel reservations issues as they will charge you a full daily rate as penalties if you make any changes to your reservation. Even when giving plenty advance notice of reservation changes, they still fight with you that one member of the staff did not inform them of the changes and do not communicate with you that they received the changes, so it becomes their word against yours - all for an immediate buck with the assumption that you will not return. Office manager is unpleasant and unhelpful. However, new office support Noelle is excellent and is so much better than the residential office manager. No phones in room. Pros: Incredible support staff that go out of their way to help. Quiet and calm. Great location and beautiful interiors.
Summary: Would stay there again IF I thought that there was 100 percent assurance that I had no changes to my reservation dates...that is a big \"but\" given travel uncertainties. Not good for business travelers.

A Hidden Gem

This Riad is tucked away in the Medina in Rabat. Once you find your way around you realise that it's not too far off the beaten track. We stayed in a large suite which had beautiful original furnishings. Breakfast was served on the roof terrace and provided a delicious selection of fresh fruit, crepes, cheese, olives and bread rolls.Unlimited coffee and cooked eggs available on request. The restaurant for evening meals was based in the downstairs salon which was furnished with beautifully decorated bench style seating and cushions.
The main shopping area which caters for every taste in food, carpets, trinkets and leatherware is about five minutes away in the narrow medina streets.
There are very few restaurants within the Medina and no bars or western style cafes. You need to go outside the medina to the riverside to find any more restaurants. These are about 10 minutes away, on a busy riverside road. There are a couple of good fish restaurants next to the beach which is about 15 minutes walk.
The riad staff were very attentive and polite - nothing was too much trouble.
Rabat city is not a destination for beach lovers and although there are some excellent historical sights, the remainder of the place is somewhat bland. Would only recommend as a short break destination.

Wonderful riad, highly recommend

Can't say enough about this riad. It was a lovely place, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The room was beautifully decorated and very comfortable. Like most riads, it was cozy but not so much for it to feel cramped. The staff was amazing and extremely helpful, providing us with the best recommendations for food and sites we shouldn't miss. The breakfast was plentiful and delicious. The location is perfect. You will love it.

Swanky riad in the medina

My husband and I stayed three nights in May during the Mawazine music festival. We were in the king suite - very fancy and luxurious.
One of the music stages was very near the riad, which is good if you want to listen to music from the riad or be in close proximity, but bad if you want to sleep before midnight.
While we paid for our room in advance, we had to pay a sizable tax upon arrival.

To experience the Medina, stay in a Riad

What an incredible hotel! The Riad is the only way to go if you want to stay near the Medina. The twisted alleys make you feel like a local and the shopping is nearby. The inside of the hotel was beautiful. We stayed in a suite to get a little more space, which was a longer room, but not very wide. Every detail of the room was great, from the tile work to the lighting. The staff was great and spoke good english if your French or Arabic is rusty. Breakfast on the terrace was beautiful. We also did the hammam and massage on site which were great experiences.

As atmospheric a setting as could be wished for

We found Dar El Kebira to be absolutely charming in every way. Located in the medina, it is fascinating to walk along the old narrow passageways near the riad. It is well sign-posted, and even at night we felt quite safe. Just a few minutes walk away are the delightful Andalucian Gardens. The riad follows the typical pattern of a central courtyard around which are the rooms. The result is a strong feeling of peace and calm. Dar El Kebira goes beyond this with the congenial attention of the members of staff, the beautifully decorated central area and rooms, and the availability of breakfast on the terrace. We spent six days there, had a relaxing time, and found Rabat to be a very livable city.

Old-world hotel in the heart of the medina

This hotel, a historic riad in the heart of the medina and close to the Casbah, is full of character and warmth. Completely different from the generic Western hotels, this boutique hotel offers stunning décor, tasty rooftop breakfasts, and kind service. The medina is alive until 9pm and felt safe, even though the hotel entrances is on a quiet back alley.

The only challenge we had was finding it, as we decided to walk from the train station (30 minutes), which meant weaving through the dark alleys and eventually asking for help. Had we started on the Casbah (water) side of the medina we would have found it well signposted.

Overnight in Rabat

This is nice property. Staff was attentive and helped us find our way around. The taxi driver did not know where the hotel was, but an entrepreneur quickly led the way through the medina (common in Morocco - they look for small tip). The room was nicely decorated, very tall, but a bit small. Bathroom was clean but tiny. A nice place in Rabat.

Friendly service, convenient location and traditional atmosphere. The rooms are a little narrow, and the lighting dim, which makes you feel a little claustrophobic.

Taxi cant get to hotel gate

Bed has cigratte burns. Taxi cant get to hotel. One has to walk about 250 meter to get in to hotel since its in old part of town.
Staff was very freindly and help full.

Beautiful rooms, lovely staff and great location!

I definitely plan to stay at this Riad again on my next trip to Rabat. The location is just a short cab ride from Rabat Ville train station. If you don't have luggage and feel like a nice walk, you can meander down the gorgeous Mohammed V avenue, into the Medina and through the souks to the Riad. Each of the rooms are decorated a bit differently and are very clean and comfortable. In the bathrooms, you will find nice, soft bathrobes and a huge bath -- perfect for relaxing after a long day of walking. Waking up to eat a delicious breakfast on the terrace is a nice plus.

Beautiful Riad in Media, Expect European Prices

This is a beautiful riad in the heart of the Medina. It is ornate, comfortable, clean and heated unlike some Moroccan accommodations. A great place to spend a special night.Nice to have the option of supper and wine in house when arriving late but expect European prices. Also it is a bit intimidating to find after dark because it's tucked away in the medina.
