First, the staff were very nice. That's why you got 1 star.
The room was not good at all. One bedroom had no working light. There were no bath towels for the bedroom. The cord to operate the blind in BR#2 was broken so the blind wouldn't open. There were no filters for the coffee maker nor were there any paper towels even for the kitchen. The pool was filthy. Instead of providing us a room, we were told we could get a better room if we paid for an upgrade. I didn't want an \"upgrade\" I only wanted a room that was in good working order. I would never stay here again, nor would I give it a recommendation. For the price, it should have been much better. Shame on them.

The room was nice. Didn't like the fact that they have a cafe machine but they didnt supply any coffee, sugar. The bar by the pool horrible! I waited over 15 mins for 2 beers and i was the only one at bar. Then i went back asked for 2 screw drivers the had no orange juice so i couldnt get any drinks becuz there was no orange jui e.i paid almost 20 for a drink and shot and they took it upon themselves to charge me a 10% service charge when they didnt wventake the drink to me.the fridge in our room wasnt cold enough so we had to put all our sodas , water etc...in freezer which didnt even freeze.

We could find this hotel and it was gated which felt safe. Everything else was so so but all the neighboring options felt totally not safe so this was good for that.

Overall it was a good experience. Breakfast was traditional. Gym has the basics you need for a work out. Beach is right in front at a walkable distance, everything else you need transportation.

Poor management as they have a gym below the room we stayed in that had blaring pounding music. It stopped at 9:00 pm but we were traveling and needed rest. It was a poor decision by who ever allowed that business to be in a hotel.

Hotel was ok for a night, the room and pool area were rather run down, pillows pretty flat, and the door to the balcony did not lock. Service was satisfactory for lobby and bags (note, there is no elevator to the second floor). Restaurant food and service were pretty good for dinner. I was pleasantly surprised by the free breakfast, which came with fruit, juice, good coffee, and a choice of one of four mains (the yogurt was a little odd, thin and comes with corn flakes) which were overall good.

We loves the room with a great view of the ocean on one side and the marinas on the othe side. We had a fully funcional kitchen. It was a great location for driving to many excursiones in the surrounding area.

Our stay at Puerto Azul Hotel Y Club Nautico was good overall. They accommodated our very late check-in at 1:30 am, which was appreciated since our flight was late getting into San Jose. The breakfast was good, and we also attended a boat tour to Tortuga Island, which departed directly from the docks at the hotel, which was very convenient. It’s probably the best, safest place to stay in the area, though Puntarenas isn’t really well known for tourists. It was a convenient location for a few different excursions we wanted to do, such as Monteverde and Tortuga Island, and the hotel fulfilled all of our needs. We likely wouldn’t stay in Puntarenas again otherwise, but this has nothing do to with the hotel. It was comfortable and the staff was great.

We were in the tower which has great views and AC in the main room and bedrooms. Kitchen window was broken and wouldn't go shut all the way but only 1cm. Pool areas were beautiful and clean. Rooms were clean and spacious which was wonderful! We enjoyed the floor to ceiling windows that allowed us to take full advantage of the great view.

I liked that it was close to the pick up for the Tortuga Island tour. The cleanliness was missing along with the place is very rundown. Our front door did not even close evenly the top had a two finger gap. The bathroom and the rooms were very dingy and the furniture literally falling off the walls. The bathroom was very strange looking, dim light and run down. This whole place needs to be closed and renovated.

The Elevators were not working and my 80 year old mother in law and disabled sister in law had to walk up 7 flights of stairs. Beautiful view minimally furnished not even big enough couch for all of us to sit and no other chairs. Great food and service at the bar and awesome pool!

the staff was friendly and responsive. the breakfast was typica costa rica, which was tasty. the property is more functional than polished. our room was clean, but sparse of character or color. so, if you're looking for polished, upscale this is not the stay for you. it was fine for us and the grandkids as we spent most of our time at the beach and in puntarenas town center.

This would have been a nice hotel at one time but the pool and room are rundown. The immediate area around the hotel doesn’t look safe for tourists especially at night.

We were a late arrival (11:30PM). We tried to call ahead of time (before 5PM), but no one answered the phone. When we arrived, at a non-manned reinforced gate with absolutely no signage or identification that we had even found the right place, we pressed the button at the entrance, and it was answered with chaotic background noise and speaking; no one even addressing us (in any language). After 2-3 minutes, we were about to leave, when the gate opened, and a security guard appeared. She presented us with the room key, and directed us to our room. So now the condition of the room: One of the two bathrooms had no soap, and did not smell clean. In the other, the sink didn't drain, the shower didn't drain, and the toilet ran until you manually lifted the handle. There was one towel provided, no hand towels, no wash cloths, and no floor mat towel. No one was in the office, so there was no one to call for the issues to be addressed (and perhaps move us to a more presentable and functional room). Apparently there was supposed to be a welcome card with this information, but there wasn't one. The room was hot, and the air conditioner was weak enough that it didn't get cool for more than an hour - well after we went to bed. Mgmt offered little empathy and no compensation.

The pictures of the tall nice hotel posted in there ad is the property next door! Theirs is only 2 story’s tall and is very very dated. Noisy. Tv didn’t work. Shower didn’t drain. Overall not bad for the price but expected more.

I stayed for a few days and loved it there! The amenities offered are great, the staff was so helpful and friendly, the restaurant and bar was convenient if we didn’t feel like going out, and everything was kept clean throughout our stay. I would definitely stay here again!

Nice surprise in Punterenas
Puterenas is a busy port and not really a center for tourism. I reserved here as a halfway point from Tamarindo to Quepos. What a wonderful surprise. Beautiful large condo unit with fabulous views of the water and boats on both sides of the property. 2 great pools, full professional gym with all the machines and free weights, and a great little restaurant.

The pictures are ALL lies! This place was horrible! First of all our front door wouldn’t open, there was black mold on the walls, cold water only.. no hot water, bed was small and very uncomfortable, lumpy pillows.
The reception and servicers were good. The food/ bar was decent, and you can tell they are trying, but overall the building is falling apart with lack of maintenance. It’s a dumpster fire. Would not recommend staying here!

The only reason you want to stay here if you’re headed very very early in the morning to isla tortuga the place would be good for that purpose only! Because there is pretty much no other good options around! Literally the area is in a very rough place! Don’t walk anywhere forget going to the beach.. it’s not good !

Property was in total disrepair. Many things, old, broken and not repaired. Food at restaurant old and tasteless. Breakfast was just Gallo Pinto and scrambled eggs. Hard to get a cup of coffee and no juice. Overall everything was old dirty out of date and pretty gross. We stayed here a couple years ago and it was wonderful. I’m not sure what happens if the owners changed or just decided to give up on repairs and training of staff.

my room floor was terrible and the second floor hallway very bad flooring, it does need to be replaced. most of the lights not working in the room and the door for the balcony did not lock. the first floor and lobby and restaurant perfect, the swimming pool clean and very nice

The staff was super helpful. Much better than in USA. They went above and beyond to help me visit the nearby Tortuga Island. Breakfast options were somewhat limited but everything was delicious. Wifi worked well and we all had a great night’s sleep. Will definitely use this hotel again for any return trip to Puntarenas.

The hotel seemed fabulous when checking in, but we soon noticed what the agent meant by, Needs a little love. The views are amazing from our 4th floor, and the breakfast was great. The best part was 2-bathroom, washer & dryer, microwave, and refrigerator. We did have to wait 2 days to replace a none working TV but that was our only issue. Well worth the visit.

This hotel looks nothing like the photos. It did at one point I’m sure, but it is in need of a lot of repairs on the inside. Many things were broken, the section where our room was had peeling flooring, and it looked nothing like the photos. The only positive was the outdoor area which was very nice. But inside was bad, and the area was even worse. There is nothing close by and appeared to be a dangerous area.

If a hotel is billed as boutique, and charge a hefty sum, then it should deliver. The place looked like a hotel from Soviet Russia. Staff was surly. Paint chipping, floors pockmarked, pool seriously needs a paint job, the grounds were boring and they ran out of fruit! In CR! The food was adequate. Worst of all, the photo is a bald faced lie. That big beautiful building? Yeah, that’s the condos next door. What a waste of money.

The staff is very friendly and everyone works hard. The apartment I lived in was spacious has a big balcony with ocean view and harbor view. It also has two bedrooms and a kitchen with utensils. The rooms and hallway were always clean. The front desk people did all they could to help us. The only issues I had was the restaurant. There was nothing to eat! The breakfast they provided was rather bad.

The staff were so friendly and helpful. The restaurant on site, El Timon, was excellent and Leo was our server a couple of different times. He went above and beyond to make our experience a positive one. The scenery around the resort was spectacular and offered some opportunities for watching wildlife. We had a great experience at Puerto Azul and would stay there again.
