This is a wonderful place to spend a few days. The ryokan is very authentically Japanese. The staff was helpful wherever we needed them. The food Is good, though our best meals were in restaurants in Takayama. Most of all, the hot springs are AWESOME. The water is so thick with minerals, so rich. We didn’t want to leave.

The staff was very friendly and efficient from Day 1. Everything was well taken care of, especially Atsushi. All staff do speak English, so it makes thing easier. In fact after making my reservation, I received an email immediately from the hotel that my reservation is confirmed and asked us for more information about all travelling guests to ensure that we have a pleasant stay there. There’s also a free shuttle from the train station to the ryokan. Love the onsen there too. Overall, we had a good time.

4 star is an understatement

Very, very good. Only thing was the location, 20~30min walk in straight line from the station, however complimentary shuttle bus was good.

Service can be compared to other big named hotels (Ritz carlton, shangri La, Conrad) shame its not a chain hotel to use my gold status.

Food was very good. Chose inclisive dinner and breakfast. Perfect if you can try new things and not too picky. Otherwise, tell them what you dont want in advance amd they are happy to accommodate.

Open air onsen, perfect temperature. Proper onsen so the water is running 24/7. You can hear the water running when sleeping but we found it comforting.

Staff are very friendly from check in to check out.

We had a lovely stay and highly recomended

Great services, nice quiet area, tradition inn

Its away from the main area but we had great quiet time, the shuttle bus to station is good, the food is awesome , both private and public onsen is great!!
When were there was not that busy, even tho public onsen its less than 5 ppl most of the time.
Host can speak English, good enough to communicate.

WONDERFUL

This was the best ryokan I have ever stayed. Everything about this place was perfect. Foot bath, ramen store (night snacks), souvenir store, several big baths, beautiful and delicious dinner that included wagyu (Japanese beef) and the delightful breakfast....The staff was kind, warm and welcoming. I would definitely recommend this place to whoever plans to go to Takayama.

This is a top end hotel with heightened understanding and practice of customer service. Though it is in a residential type setting, you feel a part of nature. The lobby is magnificent. Staff are attentive to the extreme. Couldn’t be happier. Worth the price if you’re looking for a pampered experience.

Hotel had a choice of rooms with or without private bath. We chose the room with private bath which included breakfast and dinner. The rate is very expensive and for the rate paid, you can get other properties with view. Hidatei Hanougi is located in a residential area within Takayama.

Worst Hotel experience ever!

My husband and I stayed at Hidetai Hanougi for 2 nights which included breakfast and dinner.

First night after dinner my husband got violently sick and down with food poisoning.

The staff cannot speak English and hence were not accommodating and left the room unclean and messy despite requesting a basic room clean and extra toilet paper and fresh towels three times. No one came for the room clean.

The attendant assigned to us Tatsu was extremely inexperienced having worked in hospitality for less than a month with Hidatei Hanaougi being his first stint in hotel industry. He left us hanging between courses for over 30 mins and did not understand that my husband was terribly ill and needed sleep for a few hours after a very sleepless night.

I strongly believe that if we are paying this amount of money for a luxury stay, the staff need to be experienced and well trained which wasn’t the case here.

Absolute pity that we had one of the worst experiences we have ever had. We travel the world for leisure and this one is by far the worst experience.

The only pro in all this was the service by this kind man with glasses at reception. He spoke English and was very kind and showed empathy for my husbands food poisoning situation. He was the only one who actually asked him how he was feeling. Thank you for that. We appreciate the kind words and the empathy.

Besides that we wouldn’t recommend this place. Over priced, terribly amateur service with food poisoning capacity food.

I reserved and paid $470 for a room with a private out door bath. The room the hotel gave us was without bath. The price is way too expensive for a room without an out door bath. We opted to pay additional $120 for a room with outdoor bath.

The hotel should have more free shuttle bus service to the train station. The last bus from hotel to station was 11:10am but our train was 12:33pm bound for Tokyo. So, we had no choice but waited more than an hour in the train station.

Excellent Service starts from welcome drink.
Modern Japanese-style hot spring hotel，new, clean and warm.
We book the open air bath room. It’s great for hot spring any time.
Hida beef dinner is awesome.
Japanese style breakfast is very rich.

A nice onsen hotel for westerners

Very nice onsen that is English-speaking friendly. We stayed at a room with private open air hot spring tub, so we didn't use the public ones. Our friends said it's great too. The meals were fine. The location is a bit off town center.

A truly memorable stay

My husband and I spent two nights at Hidatei Hanaougi in mid-March, 2017. I would call this a \"modern ryokan\". If you are looking for a strictly authentic ryokan experience, this place will probably not fit your criteria. The meals, for example, are not served in-room, but in a private tatami room on the 2nd floor (each room is assigned its own dining room for the duration of the stay). But if you are looking for something in between traditional and modern comfort, I highly recommend Hidatei Hanaougi! After a lot of research, we decided on Hidatei Hanaougi because we really wanted our own bathroom, while most of the traditional, smaller ryokan we looked at had shared bathrooms (toilet/shower) between several rooms. We also wanted a room with a private onsen so that we could share the soaking experience together and not have to go to the separate men/women onsen. Of course, in a room with private onsen, you have the option of doing either! The kaiseki meals were beautiful, varied, and left us very full. The main course for dinner both evenings involved the famous Hida beef (which was indeed delicious). It happened to be yakiniku the first night, and shabu shabu the second. Going into our stay, we were expecting that we would want to take advantage of the late-night ramen bar downstairs, but we ended up being too full from our dinner! Wonderful hospitality from every employee we encountered, especially from our assigned host, Hiroko, who was with us for the duration of our stay

the best choice in central Takayama

From the moment I stepped down fm the free hotel shuttle bus I felt the warm welcome from the hotel staff who were waiting dutifully outside on the entrance depsite the freezing cold temp. While checked in I were served with mint tea with biscuit by 2 very nice ladies in kimono who also walked me thro' the hotel facilities and made me understand well evyerthing I need to know for my stay (in good english) . The room I booked was with a private hotspring tub on the higher floor, which was extremely well decorated with tasteful and high qlty funitures and well stuffed with snacks and japanese teas (for free).
The japanese futon was so comfortable I slept thro my night peacefully.
However the real delights were the dinner and breakfast, which included so many courses all with exceptionally good qlty local foods and I was being served by a very sweet japanese lady with good knowlege into the local food and cultures.
The public onsen was very very good, the semi-outside onsen for foot bath was another delight.
All in all my stay was worth every penny I spent and for sure I will stay again in here if ever I will visit Takayama again.

Traditional and relaxing

This is a traditional Ryokan. Dinner is spectacular - if blowfish jelly doesn't scare you. Our room (a suite, really) was enormous for Japan and the service (in a kimono) was great. Also has a very nice onsen spa. The only downside is the location in a residential and light industrial area. Not so picturesque for a walk, although the point really is to soak in the hot spring. They do have frequent shuttles to take you to and from scenic downtown Takayama though.

Beautiful Ryokan in Takayama

We had an absolutely lovely time at this ryokan from the moment we got there and were given a welcome drink and sweet and our yukatas. The baths were beautiful and the service was outstanding. Most of the staff know enough english that you can easily get by if you don't know much Japanese. The dinner was excellent as well, and if you are still hungry later, try the ramen shop!

Fabulous traditional place with 5 star quality.

This traditional Japanese ryokan place was amazing. We loved the food. The room we had was enormous (more like 2 rooms with ensuite bathroom so perfect for our family of 5). The food was served in a private dining room upstairs and catered to our kids as well. The hot baths were wonderful.
The photos on the website don't do the place justice. It is 5 star and then some!

Beautiful ryokan.

We stayed for two nights at hidatai. The outdoor Onsen is beautiful, just as it was pictured and described. The room was equiped with all the modern trimmings. Staff at the front desk spoke English fluently and the food was spectacular. Would highly recommend this place!

Its a beautiful clean ryokan hotel. The staff and ambience are excellent! Really great service. Its on the edge of town, not near anything. The room had its own outdoor onsen/hot spring soaking tub and that was the best thing about the place. You sleep on the floor. Yes they put out matts, not what a futon is in the USA, just a cushion actually, on the tatami covered floors. As is the case with these traditional ryokans, dinner and breakfast are included in the stay. Dinner consisted or many minute sized portions of all sorts of bottom feeding sea creatures and three 1/2 inch slices of hida beef. I couldnt eat most of it and even if I did it would never be enough to consider dinner. Breakfast was worse and SMALLER. We paid $470 for the night. Yes $470 wasted! I get the idea of tradition, and am well traveled, but this was a bad idea. Stay somewhere else unless the private onsen is your goal.

揺ぎ無き名宿です。

今回3回目の滞在となりました。冬の時期は初めてなのですが、滞在中身も心もすっかり温まることができました。昨今の世情もあり厳しい運営が想像されるのですが、ゲストからはその雰囲気を全く感じさせない、温かい人情にあふれた宿です。ウィルス対策はもちろんのこと、細かい部分まで清潔に保たれており、館内素足で歩くことに全く躊躇せずすみました。お料理も京風の板前さんが腕を発揮されているとのこと、十分に堪能させていただきました。
しばらくは大変な時期が続きそうですが、いつでも帰ってきたい、今後も変わらず栄えていっていただきたい名宿です。

建物は古いですが館内はとても綺麗で清潔でした。お部屋も和室で、畳み敷きでしたが床暖房が施してありポカポカでした。お食事は個室で頂きました。お料理は懐石で、見た目もお味もとても満足の行く物でした。朝食に出た胡麻豆乳鍋は特に美味しくこんなに美味しいのは食べた事がないくらいでした。お風呂も、脱衣室はとても清潔でお掃除が行き届いています。温泉のお湯は少しぬるつく感じで、足元に注意が必要です。
トータル的に優れたお宿で素晴らしい旅行が出来ました。有難うございました。

ホスピタリティが高いお宿です。

年に一度のとても大切な家族旅行、前日の宿がイマイチだった為、若干不安で向かいましたが宿に到着する直前びっくりしました。
何時に到着するとも伝えておりませんが道路に2人の男性(明らかに宿のスタッフ)お出迎えして頂きました。
初めての事で驚きました。

チェックイン後、ウェルカムドリンクを頂き専属の中居さんが対応、夕飯・朝食をお世話して頂きました。

出迎え、お食事、お部屋、お風呂、どれもかなり高いレベルでとても満足致しました。
翌日の朝食も素晴らしく、家族満場一致で来年もまた来たいねと話しておりました(初めてですが)

中居さん、スタッフさん、女将、全てにおいて高いホスピタリティ、暖かい人間力を感じました。
(当方、サービス業をしています関係で嫌でもそういった所が見えてしまいます)

最後はやはり人間力が大事です。

来年も趣味の山登りの疲れを癒す宿としてお世話になりたいと思いました。
その節はよろしくお願い致します。

最後にこれはHotels.comに対してですがチェックイン当日直後に口コミ評価のお願いはおかしいですよ(てっきり前日の宿と思い評価しましたがそのせいでこちらの花扇さんにご迷惑をおかけしてしまいました)
宿泊後、1、2日位で評価するようにすると間違いがないと思います。

歴史のある建物で重厚感があり、決して今風ではありませんが落ち着きのある高級旅館でした。

料理、サービス、温泉全てにおいて大満足です。

帰る時信号で車が曲がる時まで見送ってくださって、日本人のおもてなしって素晴らしい文化だなと再確認しました。

各方面都平均的酒店

服務態度十分滿意，食物也可以。唯跟高山巴士站或JR站距離較遠，而shuttle bus只在14:00-17:30運行，每半小時一班，所以要預先計好行程。

The hotel is very traditional. If you like a Japanese style experience, this is a good choice. Staff cannot speak English well but they are polite and helpful.

Guests are required to walk by wearing socks in the buildings which is a bit cold at night.

We stayed for 2 nights in the traditional Japanese style with open-air bath (hot spring) room. The environment of the hotel is excellent, it also has a footbath area for relaxing. The public hot spring is also fantastic.
Food is another forgettable items.
As I stayed for my birthday, the staff given me a Japanese chopstick as a birthday present.
However, the bottle of water is not free, this is the only hotel I visited in Japan which required to pay for the bottle of water.
