Castello di Spaltenna may rank as the best overall lodging experience of my life. Perched on a hill in Chianti, you pass a towering line of Italian Cypress on final approach to the one-time monastery. The Front desk snaps to attention. A warm welcome to introduce us to the gorgeous, quiet property and then we climbed stone steps to room nine. From room nine, we enjoyed a birds eye view of the perfectly manicured lawns, sparking pool, grapevines and olive trees. A feeing of gratitude and tranquility overcame us. We took three dinners and a lunch in the trattoria on site. The Breakfast included in our stay was sprawling, diverse, and healthy choices dotted the offerings. “Capoucino the asked each morning”? Yes! Moto Grazie. The spa has decent offerings and our massages exceeded expectations. We walked down the hill to Gaiole for a simple lunch and beer. In under an hour you can be in Sienna and not much further is San Giminano. Our departure this morning was bittersweet. If you stay here, I hope you feel as we did

This hotel is wonderful with beautiful views from the terrace! The only complaint is the number of stairs you have to take if staying on upper floors (no elevator) - my husband has a bad back so that’s a consideration. Also, wish they would accommodate all the guests in the gourmet restaurant as we couldn’t get a reservation during our 2-day stay! Book ahead of time!

Of all the beautiful places we stayed on our Italy trip, this was, hands down our favorite. From the moment we pulled up, we were met by staff to take our luggage and drive us to the reception area for check in.
We were greeted by a friendly staff members, given a tour of the property and information we might need for our stay.
The property is breathtakingly stunning.
Our room was absolutely beautiful and the perfect blend of luxury and rustic, Tuscan charm. The dinner we had at one of their restaurants was incredible and the staff attentive in the best way possible- while allowing us the time to savor the delicious meal, converse and just take in all the beautiful atmosphere.
We booked time together at their Spa, which we enjoyed, and my husband had a relaxing sports massage.
The breakfast in the morning had the greatest variety, attentive staff and quality choices that we have ever experienced.
We can’t recommend Castelló di Spaltenna enough, truly a magical place, nestled in the heart of the Chianti region.

The jacuzzi at the spa was inoperable at the time of our visit. And I certainly needed cleaning. Also, the staff was unusually loud in spite of the fact that there is a specifically written rule stating to keep your voice amplitude down, a whisper. The staff across the entire property was kind and pleasant, however they seemed to lack the type of training a facility such as this would require. Over all the property itself, and its views are stunning. Very quiet and peaceful. But even though the staff were nice, the quality of the service was sub-par. Even though there was a Michelin restaurant on-site, one would expect the quality of the food at the other dining areas to have been at least above average. This was not the case. Breakfast had what tasted like powered eggs, waffles and pancakes were served cold, but the rest of the offerings were acceptable. Every plate we had for dinner was served late and cold. Given the price, it should have been a more complete experience, not one with as many pluses as minuses.

This is truly my favorite place in the world—peaceful, beautiful, and filled with the kindest staff. I’m so glad we found it. I didn’t want to leave and joked with my family that I might just run away and stay forever. The location and scenery are absolutely stunning. We enjoyed fantastic meals during our stay—even though the Michelin-starred restaurant wasn’t open, the other dining options were exceptional.

We stayed here as a family of six, including our two 3-year-olds, and it was by far our favorite place during our time in Italy! The kids absolutely loved swimming in the pools and running around the beautiful property. It felt peaceful, safe, and perfect.

The breakfast was lovely each morning—fresh, delicious, and a relaxing way to start the day. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and taken care of, which made the experience even more special.

We only wish we had stayed longer! We would absolutely come back and highly recommend it to anyone traveling with little ones (or without!).

The property is in a beautiful spot of Tuscany. Not much around it, u need to drive 15 min to find restaurants. However the view is scenic, rooms are clean.
Staff needs to smile, specially the restaurant and bar. The food that the hotel is just ok, the staff not friendly, they counted 12 euros for one scoop of ice cream and when we double checked they said it was correct!
For a 5 star hotel they need to work on the food (we didn’t try their Michelin restaurant), their breakfast bar, their bar and staff!

Some room for improvement:
- beds and mattresses. Not that comfy. I could feel my husband’s every toss and turn.
- no food after 9pm and you cannot walk anywhere

Great resort hotel in the heart of Tuscany. This hotel was fantastic. Close to wineries and a lot of other fantastic places in the regions. Amazing staff with great attention to detail. The outdoor pool was amazing and had fantastic views of the hillsides, all of which are pure Tuscany. I can not recommend this place more if you are looking for a nice place to stay and relax in the Tuscany region of Italy.

The setting of the hotel is stunning and the property itself is beautiful. Staff were very friendly. This makes up somewhat for the \"tired\" condition of the rooms (our bathroom had an outdated jacuzzi tub and the knob on the heating towel rack was broken so we couldn't warm up the towels. There were also some issues with service. We ordered room service coffee and mint tea and we received every conceivable tea but no mint. Dinner service was also a little off in the supposed Michelin restaurant. We wanted pasta just with tomato sauce for a vegan in our party, but it arrived with the fish sauce. We also ordered mint tea in the restaurant after dinner but were served Roibos. It's little things like this that may not seem like a big deal, but that make the difference between an average hotel and an excellent one. Also, the coffee at breakfast was not very good, especially for an Italian establishment.

The hotel staff is rude and unhelpful. The rooms are in serious need of renovation and the bed was as a hard as a rock. This was such a disappointing experience for a honeymoon couple. We had a problem exchanging our American money and they were not helpful until someone from home called to complain about their rudeness and lack of concern. Even after complaining the staff on that day we left refused to help me change my train tickets. He suggested I call and when I said I could not from my phone from the states because it didn’t work he didn’t offer to call for me or ask if I would like to use the hotel phone. We feel we were treated badly for being young and American. Do not stay here! I promise you will be disappointed!

The hotel is, simply put, phenomenal! It is quaint and steeped in antiquity that oozes Tuscan charm! We had a deluxe double that had a sitting room and a separate bedroom that were both exceptionally comfortable! The hotel amenities were superb with views extending out to the Tuscan countryside and several vineyards well within site. We ate at Il pievano and the meal was without a doubt the best meal I've had in my life. The attention to detail and the service was truly second to none. Dont debate, just book the room!

We loved the location, room was great, clean and we had a private balcony with a beautiful view. Spa was included and was perfect before dinner. All was perfect...only negative point was service at the restaurant in the lower level. Manager was rude when we asked for a specific wine he gave us the wine list and told us if it was there they would have it but wasn’t helpful. Another employee took over and was great but having such a great list of wines we would have appréciated having recommendations based on our tastes as soon as we asked but other than that our overall experience was great! There is an exterior and interior pool so great to relax...we would go back!

Beautiful location, stunning views, wonderful service. For a luxury resort the beds were terribly uncomfortable. Suggesting terrace for high end rooms was also misleading and not worth the price. The ‘casual’ restaurant is not casual at all and best to head into the centre for casual dining and prices.

We had a lovely stay here. Our room was very spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was large with a good-sized shower. We arrived late at night and they greeted us outside and took us on a tour right away. Very nice. The location was private and secluded, yet not too far from the local sights. Gaiole in Chianti is a cute little village right there with a few restaurants and gelato. We ate at the casual hotel restaurant both nights and it was fabulous. Used the pool one morning which was a treat. Beautiful grounds. Would definitely stay here again!

Traditional Tuscan experience

If you’re looking for a traditional Tuscan castle stay, this is the place for you. Rooms are rustic and comfortable, with nice toiletries. I stayed in the suite and the outdoor terrace had amazing hill views. The breakfast in the morning has similarly beautiful views and the buffet is generous. The pool is cold, but refreshing. 10 minute walk to restaurants. Overall a wonderful stay.

One of the best hotel experiences I've ever had. Wonderful 5-star service, gorgeous Tuscan countryside, beautiful building converted from a 10th-century monastery, quiet, comfortable room, delicious food. Great hiking in the local area, 45 minutes' drive to Siena. Special thanks to Fabio, the maitre d' at L'Osteria restaurant, for making our evening dinners on the terrace a delight.

Far to get to and from the main towns in Tuscany

Castello Spaltenna is a beautiful resort & spa with a lovely setting but not a place to stay as headquarters for visiting Tuscany, because in order to go and come from Gaiole in Chianti, you must drive a long, very curvy way for about 25 km, no matter if going towards Siena or Montevarchi.
Our room was of a good size, but not close to the main building, with a lousy shower, and a broken a/c. It lacked basic details, such as face towels, terry hand towels, trash basket in the room, etc.
The staff tried to fix the situation of the a/c, but it was impossible, so they gave us a portable one thinking that this would solve the problem, but this implied in leaving the windows open, so the flies and other insects flew in.
Breakfast was plentiful, served on the terrace, but being outside, smoking was permitted and this was upsetting. If you wanted to eat inside you’d need to sit in a dark room. I must acknowledge that the servers were extremely attentive, always smiling and prompt. The folks at the reception and housekeeping were also very helpful and always willing to please!
I wouldn’t recommend this hotel unless you just want to rest and enjoy a spa. If not, choose some place else, more conveniently located. There are many choices out there.

Loved this hotel! I stayed here with my husband for our honeymoon and couldn't have asked for a better place. The grounds and gardens are stunning with an awesome view of the Tuscan hill sides.The spa and pool are great for relaxing after coming back from wine tasting. This is truly a gem in the middle of Chianti.

The hotel is beautiful. The grounds are beautiful. The restaurant is very amazing. They gave us many small tastes to try that were fantastic. The spa with the steam bath and sauna is to die for. The pool was a little chilly but so fresh and clean. The room had a nice jacuzzi tub. The staff was exquisite. I will be back back!

Spent 5 nights at this wonderful hotel in the heart of the Chianti region in Tuscany. The days began with an incredible breakfast on the scenic outside terrace. Days were spent at the pool, using the spa, or visiting local wineries and restaurants. The restaurants at the hotel were top notch. The hotel staff was extremely helpful and accommodating. In short, this was a five star experience, through and through.

A true 5 star castle in Tuscany

If you are looking for a romantic escape, or a quiet place for your family to unplug, all the while enjoying the fruits of a location in central Tuscany, look no further. This is quite simply Heaven.

We took our eleven-year old daughter and stayed for several days in late September, and enjoyed wonderful weather, even to the point of the outdoor pool. We ate at the fine dining restaurant, which is NOT to be missed with its multi-course gourmet meals that far surpass the prices charged in quality, service, and the sheer number of complimentary courses and wines that accompany your meal. The breakfast bar is fresh and offers anything you could need, and we enjoyed eating alfresco almost every meal without question.

We took over a two bedroom suite, and while it was large for our needs, was perfect for a semblance of isolation that our family needed. The wifi worked well when we needed, the cell reception from the U.S. worked better than I would have liked, and all our needs were met immediately.

In fact, I can't remember a staff person who ever said anything other than: \"Yes, of course,\" to any of our requests.

Go there. Use it as a base to explore Florence, southern Tuscany, Umbria, or Pergia. Drive around aimlessly and find restaurants, wineries, or places to buy olive oil. And at night, go back to the warmth and security of your Castello.

Could be a real gem

Amazing property and views with good location and ver nice breakfast. The fine dining restaurant was good (though expensive for the area) although the less formal osteria was totally over-priced, and not worth it. The spa was a bit small and the pool not heated, and the jacuzzi definitely lukewarm. Overall great property and enjoyable stay although i feel management are missing an opportunity for greatness? Set reasonable prices as to capture your internal demand rather than having people feel ripped off and leave premises.

Charming luxury castle hotel in heart of Chianti

The hotel was fantastic and the service was impeccable. Everyone on the staff went out of their way to make us feel specia throughout our stay. Very personal attention. We had to leave early the last morning so they thoughtfully offered to make us box lunches (no additional charge) and had them ready at 5 am for us. The pool and grounds are breathtaking with the rolling hills of the vineyards and castles in every mountain top. Very well maintained. The location was great to get to many vineyards and castles in Chianti. The two restaurants were amazing, one more casual and one more formal. The rooms were charming with very comfortable beds, sky tv in many languages, and in the castle. local vineyards held wine tastings at the hotel at 4pm. Absolutely loved it!

Complete Disappointment.. Waste of money !!!

Good Property in a far away location. Terrible service, staff is unwilling to please you... seen better service at 3 star hotels ..issues with room left unresolved over 2 nights... Disgusting Service... Poor Wifi... the staff has no solution for any of the problems.. ridiculous !!

Used as an amazing base to explore Tuscany by auto. Really gorgeous hotel and grounds with exceptional restaurant. You may eat on the terrace overlooking the vineyards & olive trees. Very special hotel

Very nice renovated hotel

Driving up the hill to the property the look & views are amazing. It's newly renovated but with an old charm. Lot's of stone & wood coverings. The staff was very helpful, the breakfast amazing and dinner was outstanding.
It was too cold to sit by the pool but we enjoyed a day at the spa facility... indoor pool, sauna, stream room, etc.

Great location for exploring Chianti region.

Beautiful hotel in Tuscany

Fairytale castle hotel in the heart of Tuscany. Everything about this hotel was fabulous! The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The room was always clean and tidy. The buffet breakfast had a wide range of delicious food and lovely service. Thanks for a great stay!

Beautiful resort in the heart of Tuscany

Loved everything about staying at this gorgeous hotel. The hotel itself is beautiful and exactly what we were looking for in a hotel in Tuscany. From the moment you walk in, until the moment you leave, you are treated like valued and important guests. The hotel attended to our every want and need, and then some. When one of our tour bookings (that we had booked ourselves online) went wrong, the front desk dealt with it for us with no issues and fixed it. They truly went above and beyond.
The rooms are clean and are not only cleaned every day, but a turn down service provided every day.
The restaurants, well pricy, are well worth every penny spent. The food is to die for and the staff makes you feel like royalty. The spa and pools are gorgeous and helped us to feel truly relaxed during our stay.
The location is perfect. It's just a quick walk to a small town that has a few restaurants and shops. I would recommend having your own car though as exploring the region would be difficult without it
Our only negative about this resort was that we couldn't stay longer!

Beautiful Hotel with magnificent views

The hotel provided a quiet and restful base for touring the Tuscany region. The building was true Castello style and looked beautiful as we approached along the drive.
We were attending a wedding and were pleasantly surprised to find that the ceremony was to be held in the small, historic church attached to the hotel. Breakfast was buffet style and adequate including many Italian cakes and breads.
Rooms were very clean and comfortable and furnished in a rustic Italian style which gave it even more atmosphere.
The staff were very helpful and there was a small indoor pool and spa which we used one morning when the weather was poor.

Excellent, upscale small hotel

Superior small hotel. Superior service and staff. They couldn't be more helpful and pleasant. Negatives - the location is a bit isolated, ie Gaiole is within walking distance but little or no choices for restaurants, so you must drive the winding roads for minimum 1/2 hour to have dinner; beds in room quite hard and could use some updating; pool, spa and gym on location should open earlier than 8AM.

A Tuscan Dream Castle to Die For

This was the second of five hotels in our 14 day Italy vacation. This hotel in Chianti was fairly easy to find, being just a little bit out of the main square up on a hill in the vineyards...after all, it is Chianti! The castle has like 33 rooms, which is the size hotel we like (not a B&B and not a huge place). Parking is a breeze and they will send a man out to your car to grab your bags. Room was fabulous with a Jacuzzi tub and view over the vineyards with cypress trees that was so beautiful it didn't look real. When we had breakfast on the patio, we were treated like royalty. Antonello was supervising the wait staff at the time and he is a true professional. We could see him making sure the waiters didn't miss a beat in their service. Front desk people were always available and helpful. Property is magnificent. A separate building houses their indoor pool, gym and wonderful spa that had everything you could ask for..also has an outdoor pool. My boyfriend rated this his very best favorite hotel out of the 5 that we booked. We did not eat dinner at their restaurant but the room was beautiful...being Tuscany most of the menu was game/meat related and we do not eat meat

Castello di Spaltenna - A special treasure

This hotel was what we expected and more. It's setting, authenticity to its history, and a staff that made you feel welcome and special made our stay a memorable one. If only we stayed a bit longer. We hope we have the opportunity to visit again. The signature restaurant was outstanding and each day started with breakfast on the veranda. This hotel was a highlight of our trip to Italy.

Faultless. Don't hesitate to book.

We went for a mini second honeymoon abs throughly enjoyed every aspect of our stay. The staff could not have been more professional and helpful.

The food is superb; we dined in the restaurant one evening and it was a superb experience, but not one that we could afford every night as the bill was more than the cost of the room!

The spa is small but well equipped. Everything is immaculately maintained and the staff are clearly well trained and motivated.

No complaints though, for a quiet spell of pampering this hotel is hard to beat.
