we loved our stay! Right on the lake, ideal location to the walking path to the Hallstatt train station. We had a gorgeous view of the mountains, where we were able to watch the sunrise.

Pros: The hotel's location is truly a dream, offering a magnificent lake view. Also, the rooms were very clean.
On a positive note, the gentleman at check-out was very friendly and kind, which we really appreciated.

Cons:
Furniture & Amenities: The furniture is very old and outdated. In the room, there are only two plastic cups—no kettle, no tea, and no coffee. It’s quite disappointing to have zero facilities for a hot or cold drink.
Service: After 3:00 PM, there is no staff available. More importantly, there isn't even a single vending machine to buy water or a soda.
Parking: We paid €18 per day for parking directly to the hotel. Whether this goes to the municipality or not, it is an expensive additional cost.
Verdict: You pay for the view, but the lack of basic hospitality and the outdated interior make the stay difficult.

Really really bad service. Do not recommend. It was 18€ a day for parking plus they charged us for having a smear on bed. They charged us 350€, extra because my wife lipstick fell on bed. Like I said do not recommend this place.

A simple hotel that met our needs. Room was small but comfortable and it was to find and check-in was smooth (note you need to notify arrival time and received details for self check-in using a secure lock-box).

Easy to get too via the Overtraun train station. There are also a couple of eateries near by too.

We didn't eat breakfast - so cannot comment on that, but met our needs sufficiently.

Thank you for helping make our stay at Obertraun and surrounding areas pleasant.

The location is wonderful being right on the water. It is significantly less expensive than those hotels in Hallstatt, which is a couple of miles away, with local bus and boat services. The ice cave and five fingers view point are actually located closer to Obertraun than Hallstatt. The self check in is well organized and easy to follow. Franz and his wife (I assume) are very friendly and helpful, particularly in giving details tour information around the area. Small improvements would help the rating of this property. For example, having a couple of proper glasses instead of the extremely fragile plastic cups would not be much cost but much better. I don’t believe there is a garbage bin in the room, although there is the little one in the shower/toilet. Adding a small safe and refrigerator would be more expensive but their long term benefits would be huge for travelers to leave their passports and other valuables in the room, and have a little option for drinks and simple foods giving the local options are so limited in Obertraun.

I stayed at this hotel recently and had a generally positive experience. The location is excellent — just a short walk to the boat that takes you to Hallstatt, which was incredibly convenient. The views from the property are stunning and definitely a highlight of the stay. Walking to the train station took about 7 mins.

The room, however, was quite small, especially considering the price I paid. It felt a bit cramped and may not be ideal for those looking for more space or comfort.

That said, the owner, Franz-Joseph, was very friendly and welcoming, which added a nice personal touch to the visit.

Overall, it's a great spot if you're prioritizing location and scenery.

Americans BEWARE!This host was awful. He has a huge disdain if your from America. No regard for service. Rude reply to a question my husband presented on the first day. We requested additional pillows and none were provided after he ackknowledged our request. The pillows are utter garbage. We failed to place a request for breakfast and unbeknownst to one person in our party she was thrown out of the breakfast area after pouring a cup of coffee. Upon checkout, he charged her for breakfast. Also at checkout, the host charged $18 per day versus the $12 per day in his welcome email sent the day of arrival. The worst customer service we have EVER encountered in our many travels. The room was the bear minimum.

Breakfast was ok - wish there were more options, seemed more scarce compared to other buffets we’ve visited.

Only complaint was it was noisy above us, early in the morning … it sounded like someone was moving furniture or something.

Would stay here again however, fair price compared to Hallstatt.

There is much to recommend this property. The price is good, the location is right on the lake, and there is a ferry that can take you to Hallstatt, which is lovely. It was extraordinarily clean, self check-in was easy, the gentleman at the desk in the morning was friendly and helpful. However, I had a soft mattress and cheap, lumpy pillow, which would keep me from staying there again until they upgrade.

Not that impressed with the hotel but it was close to Hallstatt and that’s what we wanted. The hotel was close to the boat dock and that made things nice. Our room was very small but we did like the view from the little deck. There is no elevator so we had to carry our bags up the stairs. Overall it is fine for just one night for us.

While the view is spectacular and the area idyllic, the front of house staff leave MUCH to be desired. There was miscommunication on reservations, with cancellations in order to jack up the prices when you try to book again. The guy running the checkout was extremely rude also and frankly should find a new career. I wish I could say I’ll be back, but not with that staff. Save yourself some hassle and get a different stay for Obertraun.

I loved the property, accessible to transportation to go to other towns such as Hallstatt. Nice walking/running/biking trail close by. Walkable to restaurants. Only thing I don’t love about the booking process is that you have to contact property 24 to 48 hrs prior to stay to get lockbox information. We had to call multiple times to get a hold of someone to provide us this code where it should be sent to your email the minute your reservation is confirmed and past the cancellation date. Overall tho good service and staff. Easy parking

For prospective guests: staying here is worth it—read the check in details that are sent, ask questions through the message portal on Expedia, and use google translate if you’re struggling. The only great thing about the room was its balcony and its serene view of the lake. The front desk attendant was racist and very hostile. I just asked for normal black coffee and was ready to pay for it as there aren’t any cafes nearby but I was asked to purchase the whole breakfast buffet. And there is no way coffee was given separately which is such a basic amenity. Location is close to the main area- 5-6 min drive. The room was very basic not many amenities. Another point of concern is safety of the guests as they never asked for our passports to check us in or out or check any identification of the individuals staying. Another one was that how there are misplaced steps on the property which are tripping hazard.

Management was not clear on ordering breakfast and when I tried to verify how, they were extremely rude - incredibly rude and insulting I wish I could upload the conversation... Breakfast was terrible with rotten fruit and stale breads for 18E
No AC, no fan. Dingy old pillows Tiny room. I would never recommend this hotel for anything other than location.
Location and view were beautiful; those were the only thing we enjoyed about the hotel. Pizzeria near by had fantastic food and service

Nice beds with an amazing view of lake. This property has one of the best breakfasts and there aren’t a lot of choices in the surrounding area. We visited mid-June and the dock/lake area not set up for summer. There is a beach next to the property. Hallstatt closed at 6 pm. Literally all but one or two restaurants and all the shops closed at 6. Not many options for dinner in Obertraun or Hallstatt. Apparently summer hadn’t yet “started” as the kids weren’t out of school.

Hotel Haus am See is surrounded by natural beauty. We loved the view of the lake, the numerous mountain bike and hiking trails. It has a cozy family restaurant close by and a few authentic coffee cafes. The rooms are very simple and very small but the little balcony made it better.

We booked this hotel because we want to be by the lake but honestly probably would have been able to get a nicer room a little farther from the lake and it would have been nicer. I think having a lake view would have been nice, but we had a Mountain View/aka view of the parking lot. The hotel is very old fashioned with keys for the rooms instead of key cards. They email on the day of with a self check in where you essentially enter a code into a mail box to retrieve your key and parking pass which costs 18 euro per night. I felt like there were a lot of hidden fees that I didn’t see listed on the site like 18 euro parking and 18 euro breakfast. The beds were not the worst but definitely not comfy. The bathroom was very narrow and the bathtub/shower was very high making it difficult to get in. And lastly the staff at check out were not very friendly. Overall our stay was not what we hoped but we did have a clean room with beds. The lake/surrounding area is very beautiful.

You need to book the lake view rooms! Walking onto the balcony at all hours to admire the lake was the star of the show, especially when there's a boat playing live music in the evening. The owner, Franz, was so helpful to my elderly Asian mom. Her English isn't the best, and she told me he was patient and informative. Parking is 18EUR, but that's standard in that small area. The city enforces it, so the neighboring hotels do it too. The bathrooms are clean and were cleaned everyday. With all our activities, we missed the dinner at the hotel that everyone raves about. There's a pizza restaurant down the street that we decent and stayed open late, but next time we're back, we'll need to try the hotel's dinner!

Our holiday was spoilt by the unacceptable behaviour of the owners. Their communication style was downright crude & unfriendly. Examples -

Can I request for sunny side eggs (during breakfast)?
Female- “No!”

Can I ask you about the heater in the room?
Male: “I cannot talk to you. I’ve not eaten my breakfast yet!”

On the positive side- the lake & mountain view from our room was superb.

The property, although super well located, has a terrible hospitality strategy. I was not aware of the self check in. I never got an email from them. So, I arrived at 11AM and the doors were all locked and the not on the door was only in German. I cannot believe that a hotel in a place filled with Chinese tourists and many other nationals has only signage in German. Then, a hotel worker opened the door but she did not speak any English and after struggling to communicate I had a reservation via google translate, she told me I had to wait outside. Finally, a very friendly older man arrived, some 1.5 later (He worked the front desk and was making breakfast the morning after) and checked me in surprised that I had not received any emails.
Despite the views, I would not stay there again.

Cleanest hotel bathroom and beds were supper comfy. Room was great for my family of 4. No A/C but with the windows opened we were comfortable.

Don’t listen to the hotel when they tell you that you can catch easily catch a taxi back from Hallstatt. Waited an hour for the one taxi and eventually the family had to walk back late in the even for 3.5 miles. Be sure you catch the last ferry or bus.

I never received the check in instructions and had to call the property, luckily someone answered immediately. Once upstair where the rooms are the carpet was filthy in the hall, felt almost like a hostile because it was so small and cramped. Did not feel clean at all as far as the rooms go. If the weather is bad and you cannot go outside you are pretty much stuck inside the hotel. Not fun if the weather is bad!

The Hotel has a good view but others was suck. Nothing is in the room. No water, no tea bag, no coffee. When we want to borrow the kettle and they replied that they don‘t allow to cook nuddle in the room. No staff in the counter to be inquired. The breakfast is too expensive. The location is far away Hallstatt downtown and need to take boat or train which is very inconvenient. The check out is very early(10:30pm), so we need to check out first then go to Hallstatt DT. So we need to put our luggages in the counter, they charged us $3 Euro per person. That’s unacceptable, no hotels will charge this fee. It’s really bad experience ti stay here.

A wonderful stay in a picture perfect location. Definitely worth paying for the lake view room. Breakfast outside of our budget but there’s a bakers and supermarket in walking distance and a friendly cafe next door. Check in process smooth and we received all the instructions we needed. We were also able to buy boat tickets from the hotel. Obertraun is charming and beautiful - much more relaxing and not-touristy than Hallstatt. We would stay here again.

It was disappointment as we opened the door. Decor was dated, old, the only saving grace was the view.

There was no tea/coffee making facility. Cups for brushing were two clear plastic cups. (see picture). We wanted hot water for making cup noodles and we were told we couldn't bring them back upstairs as the owner \"did not like the smell\". PS: we have a balcony.

No floor mats for shower.

Soundproofing is poor. We could hear our neighbours chatting and singing loudly upstairs.

We didn't take their breakfast but it is severely overpriced for what's on offer. Continental breakfast only. Save your EUR 18 and have a nice big breakfast at a proper breakfast cafe.

During my stay at Obertraun. I broke my right elbow. I asked for help at the reception next morning, the lady (I am sorry that I didn’t ask her name at the moment) gave me a very professional first aid, an iced board and bandages to hold my arm and restrained it to movement and also pain killers. Then I was able to travel to Salzburg safely and got X-rays checked and plastered at the Salzburg hospital. Here I would like to express my great gratitude to her.

The stay was okay, the room was clean and pleasant and we did stay in the off season. However there was only one option for dinner and no where to grab a drink or chill asides from the room. Never saw any staff in the hotel, which was fine but just not a lot going on. Just be aware of this when thinking of spending a night in Hallstatt :)

The hotel did not email me the checkin code before we arrived. He refused to give me the code by the phone. I had to call Hotels.com to force him to email me the code. The room is tiny and very dirty, super uncomfortable. I wrote my experience in check-in review of hotels.com. The next morning, they were super mad vaout my review. They cheated me to go back the room with them and were trying to beat me up. I rashed to the balcony and yelled for help. They cheated us to give them our passports and refuse to give us back. I told my husband to run outside and call police. By the end they gave us back the passports. Do not ever go to this place. They take your money and do not want you to stay. They are dangerouse people. You put yourself in trouble and in danger if you book with them.

The staff was unnecessarily aggressive when being asked for basic things such as towels and pillows. Furthermore, they charged us for towels and pillows (5EUR each), which wasn't part of the description beforehand. Generally speaking, the description did not fit the service that was offered. The office desk was closed when we arrived at 18:00, even though it should close at 19:00. The walls and doors are thin and barely soundproof. The staff was vacuuming at 7:30 in the morning right in front of our door. The curtains are thin and do not block sunlight at all. The food was OK and the lakeside view was splendid.

Had a lovely experience staying four nights in this hotel. This hotel definitely has the best views out of all the ones in the area - waking up to the lake and mountains every morning was breathtaking! The hotel is a few minutes walk to the train station which connects you to the rest of the area. Hallstatt is only a short boat ride away, or about an hour walk by the lake, which was also nice. The hosts were kind and very helpful. My only suggestion would be to have a kettle in the room, or even a shared one in a communal area - would be lovely to have a cup of tea on my balcony watching the view. Overall I had a great experience and would certainly stay again! Thank you

Gentleman at the front desk was very friendly but the lady (probably the owner or manager) not at all friendly. She woke us up at 7:40 am for not parking the car properly although it was not blocking any car and asked for 6 Euros for two extra pillows when we said the pillows provided were disintegrated. They knew we arrived late the previous night and moving the car could wait another half hour. Rooms are really small.

Saw some bad reviews about this property but I'e never had any of those bad experiences. Location is amazing. I even liked more than the main tourist area. Sadly I booked a view with mountain instead of the lake. It would be better if I had the lake view. I also had breakfast with extra fee, I loved it. I recommend this place

Just right!

We loved our stay here. Great location in quiet village across from Hallstatt. Beautiful view from our small balcony. Rooms aren’t large, but very adequate. Wish TV was a smart tv we could put YouTube on or stream our own movies in English. 15 euros per check in and 12 euros parking per night we didn’t know about until getting our sign in instructions. But would stay here again!

The price of this hotel is really high for the kind of place that it is. No elevator and it’s very hard to bring your luggage up if it’s heavy and you have been traveling for several weeks.
It’s a very basic place and very high cost.

The only thing going for this hotel is the view. The room was very small. The pillow was horrible. The shower was primitive. The bathroom light went on together with a noisy fan. And it was not cheap.

The location and breakfast were great. You get directions for self check in and there isn’t anyone around in the afternoon to get assistance from. Our room felt small, best suited for one person, but there’s bigger rooms. We just needed a place to sleep so it met our needs. The room had a hair dryer, towel hanger, soap, and a small table with 2 chairs. I feel additional items would have been helpful such as a fan (we went in early September), way to heat water, and a small fridge. There’s about 2 restaurants in town and one grocery store about a 20 minute walk, so storing food would be convenient.

This hotel is significantly over priced. It is very basic, old and expensive. The view however is lovely but that is why you’re paying 3 times what should be charged. There is nothing in the area for dinner other than a terrible restaurant, my food was inedible. If you want to stay in the area as the lake is beautiful stay in Hallstatt!

I was late arriving but was left very clear check in instructions. My single room was perfect for me with a nice shower and sink, only needing to share the toilet with one other room so no problem. The view from the balcony was breathtaking. Possibly my only gripe was that breakfast was a little on the pricey side at €18 and there was a parking charge of €12 per day. Having said that I’ve rarely had breakfast on a more beautiful terrace right on the lake so I guess you are paying for that really. Contrary to some other reviews I found the man on the desk to be very helpful and nice. All in all a fantastic stay in a perfect location

Excellent for a short stay in Obertraun! Easy access to Hallstatt, but I did prefer just spending time in Obertraun around the lake. Beautiful view of the lake from my balcony. Property is advertised, clean and comfortable. Friendly check in and overall a great stay.

Our room was perfect and cleaned daily. We had a Mountain View which was beautiful. I loved how close this was to the lake and really enjoyed seecafe next door. I also used the laundry facilities nearby at the Hotel Dormio which was nice. Check in and out was easy with the lock box. The only downside was the staff was not very helpful with providing knowledge on the area. They were kind enough but whenever asked very basic questions about attractions or transportation they told us we had to look it up.
