We did enjoy our stay here. It was close to the sights. Our room was clean and comfortable. The two downsides were the constant music next door ( close restaurant) not the fault of the hotel and the WiFi would not stay on. They were very helpful when we needed it.

If you want amazing views this is the place to stay. We had a small balcony overlooking the gorge. Downside is there is no air con & it was very hot. They provided us with a fan when we requested one. We had dinner on both nights we stayed & the food is excellent. We had reserved a table for our first night when we booked this hotel so we had the best table on the terrace. Amazing views. If you want a terrace table reserve as the terrace is quite small. They gave us the same table the following evening.
We had breakfast on the first morning which was not very good. No meat/cheese vegetable laid out. A girl eventually brought out some plates of cling film covered ham & cheese. Some hard boiled eggs that looked like they had been in the fridge for a few days. There were some pastries & fruit. We were the only people at breakfast

We absolutely loved staying at the Hotel Posada San Jose. The views of Cuenca from our room and from the dining room were priceless and so beautiful! The staff was warm and welcoming and very helpful. You step outside of the hotel and you are within walking distance of all of the lovely sites of the historic center of Cuenca. I loved the \"old way\" of leaving your big room key at the front desk.

This hotel is right on top of everything that a history buff would want to see in Cuenca. We looked out our window and we were on the hanging houses. The walkability is amazing. The staff are excellent.

Really nice small hotel located in Cuenca's historic center just steps from the Cathedral. Great view of the mountains, the Parador and the canyon below. Enjoyed the room with old wooden beams and rustic look.
The tasty onsite breakfast for a fee was a bonus since there aren't that many options nearby in winter.

Lovely old business. Helpful staff. Our room had a terrace with the most amazing views of the gorge. Lots of walking options and trails. Lot of bars and restaurants in the old town.
It is steep so good exercise for the legs! Alternatively there is a bus and a tourist train from the cathedral square.
Will def return.

Great location, great view

I had a nice stay here (3 nights). My room was clean and I particularly enjoyed the balcony and mountain view. It was nice to be able to sit outside and relax. The location is great: just a few minutes walk from Plaza Mayor and a relatively short walk up to the area where you can see some great views

The bus from the AVE train station (Estación de Cuenca-Fernando Zóbel) is easy to use and very convenient (it drops off/picks up at Plaza Mayor). There are also buses from the new or lower town that drop you off at Plaza Mayor, so if you walk down the hill to the town and don't feel like walking back up, you can catch a bus back up (L1 or L2 comes every 15 minutes).

My only complaint would be the pillows...they weren't very comfortable for me (way too high and firm, even when sleeping on my side). Despite this, I really enjoyed my stay and I would definitely stay here again!

Old building in a great location

The build is about 1000 years old with winding stairs and just off the main plaza. It is comfortable and quiet, though you can hear other guests in the halls. My only issue was my height, I hit my head a few times on the low door ways. The staff warned me, so all on me not paying attention.

Historical accommodation overlooking the valley and many beautiful rock formations in the Old Town. Historical sites are easily accessible, and include the must-see Cathedral of Cuenca. The bus service from the Ave-Renfe train station is quick and very efficient. Front desk and services were very helpful and accommodating.

Historic hotel in great location

Lovely small hotel in great location close to the Plaza Mayor. Our room was full of character, simply furnished but comfortable, and large enough for a separate seating area. Clean and tidy ensuite with plenty of hot water. Best of all, from our room's large shuttered windows we had an amazing view of Cuenca's famous gorge and surrounding area. Staff were friendly and helpful, breakfast was good, the location convenient for walking to all major sights in the picturesque old town and for the numerous hiking trails. The hotel has a great little restaurant serving well-cooked local specialities - booking essential, especially if you want a table on the small terrace overlooking the gorge. There's no lift or air conditioning, but that's a small disadvantage when weighed against the pleasure of staying in such an historic building. If you can, stay in a room with a 'mountain view'. Wonderful!

Great location for short people.

Location is right next to the cathedral and Plaza Major. The views from the restaurant are great. If the weather is good you cannot get a better view. Parking is difficult and costs 15 E per day with discount from hotel. About two blocks away up hill. This hotel right next to the cathedral was the choir boys dorm years ago. Consequently the door jams are low. I am 5-11 and opened a 1+ inch cut in my forehead rushing around which took 10 minutes to stop the bleeding. The staff was very helpful and gave me supplies to treat the cut. Everyone was very concerned. I think this hotel is best for short people.

Beutiful gem in the heart of Old Cuenca w/ a view!

Wonderful choice for a couple of days to get away and relax. Easy access to good hiking and exploring ruins. The staff was great and very helpful. I had the room next to the kitchen which was a little noisy but totally worth it for the ready nook that had a table with doors that opened to a small balcony with a beautiful view of the convent and the statue on the top of the mountain that overlooks the town of Cuenca. You are close to the casas colgadas, the catedral, the abstract art museum, the museum of natural science(super cool and great for kids) and the tunales(which were used for air raids in the 30's during the civil war). Whether you like history or just a quiet romantic get away. I loved it!!

Historic building in an amazing town

A charming hotel in a historic building looking out (and overhanging) the amazing river valley from which the old town sticks up on a huge stone base. You don't get parador-style luxury but very nice rooms (ours had a fantastic view from a sort of conservatory area) and a good breakfast. The restaurant quite good - especially if some people want full meals while others want snacks though the Fogon next door would be a better bet for a blow out and the Asador Maria Moreno 600 metres further uphill beyond the castle was excellent and very good value. Also worth using the ample free parking up there rather than the nearer (and very expensive at 20+ Euros a day) underground car park nearer by. Cuenca is a really interesting place packed with art galleries (the free one in the amazing 'hanging houses' Casas Colgadas in particular is terrific) and the cathedral is fascinating.

Traditional 'old style' hotel & a friendly welcome

Arrival at the hotel by car left us rather grateful that the car rental company had not upgraded us to a larger car - and offering a recommendation to others that unloading your bags off in the wider adjacent street and walking through would be considerably better for your nerves - the 'road' outside the hotel is used as such - but if you are unaccustomed to narrow roads with tight turns it might seem rather daunting.

The staff at this traditional style hotel offered a friendly welcome. We felt that we might have been fortunate that our early booking had secured a quite simply lovely room with a large terrace overlooking the gorge. The hotel was in a brilliant location for the Plaza Mayor - and only a short walk to the hanging houses. Breakfast was lovely - the fresh juices, fruits, meats and cheeses together with excellent breads, pastries and biscuits offered plenty of choice.

The centuries old building is amazing and Cuenca is one of the most beautiful places I've been. The only drawback with the hotel is there is no air-conditioning and there was no fan in the room. I'd still stay there in a heart-beat, however.

A gem of an historic building in heart of old town with fabulous views. Very special. In 17th c it belonged to a daughter of Velasquez, the master of court painting. Thereafter it was a choir school connected to the Cathedral. It is beautifully restored and exudes its history. Be prepared for hills. From it you can walk uphill for free parking and downhill for river bathing.

A hotel needs more than a good view

If a hotel is rated by the view from its bedrooms, this one would be 5*. Unfortunately there are other factors to consider. We knew there was no parking at the hotel itself, but when i sent an email to ask where to park, I was ignored. The result was that i had to squeeze my car down a really narrow road to get to the front of the hotel. After unloading and going off to park the car - even trying to get off this road was challenging - when i returned, i discovered that no one had helped my wife with our luggage and she dragged everything up a flight of stairs and down a hallway. And then there was the issue of the lock on the door which would not stay closed without physically locking the door. Is this all nitpicking? Maybe, but after a long drive from Toledo via the windmill tour to Consuegra we had hoped for a bit more. This was the least satisfactory hotel on a two week tour.

A gem in Old Town

A privilege to be able to stay in a beautiful historic venue, in a wonderful Old Town. Great condition, lovely rooms, comfortable beds, and friendly and helpful staff. Ask for room with a view and you will be amazed. Cuenca is spectacular town and should be on all itineraries. If staying there and you should to have time to appreciate the history and scenery, this is the best place to stay.

The hotel is located just in the middle of touristy spots and good restaurants, very good position to access to thouse places. The room we stayed was a double room with priave bath, could look down the Parador from the window, which was quite good at dawn with the sunlight! Our room was perfectly clean, well-maintained, we really enjoyed our stay in San jose. Actually felt it can be better to stay here than in Parador.

The breakfast was quite simple but was enough to fill up. The staff was also very kind. Will stay here again if I go to Cuenca again definitely.

Room with a VIEW

We only stayed in this hotel for one night which was fine. It has the unique atmosphere and an amazing view. Staff members made us feel very welcome and were helpful when we asked for information. Our room was super clean and the radiator worked really well at night.
The only reason I wouldn't stay here for more than one night is because of the bed which somehow made a lot of noise, and as other travelers mentioned before that there is no sound proof, so we could hear every movement from upstairs. Well, it is an ancient building but it is definitely worth staying if you like medieval experience.

The hotel was good overall and very central. There were lots of stairs in hotel and no lifts. The car park charged 15euros and was a 10 minute walk. The breakfast was good and evening meal was good but quite expensive and you need to book in advance. It would have been nice to have a balcony as the views across the gorge to the Parador are amazing. The hotel is very difficult to find if driving and it is on a pedestrian road. Head for Plaza Mayor and take a detailed map of the town.

A Quaint Hotel Worth Discovering

We had no trouble finding the hotel - just follow the signs. Free parking is available if you are willing to park near the top of the hill, about 300 metres from the hotel. The view from the restaurant is wonderful! You will be pleased with the quality of the food and the service, as well as the price - good value. Our room was small, the floor sloped about 3% and we shared a WC and Banos down the hall. It was the only room available when we booked, and we don't regret taking a chance on it. I'm sure that there are far superior rooms. Lack of air conditioning was not a problem in September.

Nice view and great location. Basic amenities. No AC in our room so it was unfortunate we apwere there during a heat wave. It did cool off a bit after 2 am. This is no fault of the hotel. I would stay there again but not in the summer months.
We heard their restaurant is very good but it was closed the Monday we were there. They recommended El Secreto which is a walk down the hill and it was great.
Breakfast at the hotel was not great but you should go sit in the plaza and find plenty of options there. Definitely get a room with a view.

This hotel is in a quiet location overlooking the gorge and just a few minutes walk from the main street. There is an underground Car Park about 5 minutes walk away at 15 euros for a 24 hour stay or you can park safely for free at the top of the hill which is 10/15mins walk away.

This hotel would be our first choice if we stayed in Cuenta again.

The views from our hotel balcony were stunning. It was clean and was very impressed by the overall authentic decor. The owner was wonderful and keen to share her knowledge of Spain and the surroundings. There were some language difficulties as not all staff spoke english but we managed through some broken spanish and sign language! Overall an excellent experience.

Stay in this very attractive hotel but eat in Figreron next door. Ask for an East facing room and in Summer you may need fan. In summer the car may best parked for €15 per day just up the road.

Gorgeous views, so they don't try all that hard

Cuenca is a spectacular town, and we enjoyed our brief visit there. While the Posada has an outstanding location and the view from our room was breathtaking, Besides that, the room was adequate and the breakfast at 9 Euros pp was OK. But, my main gripe is below. To be fair, I emailed the hotel before I posted my review to let them know my dissatisfaction.

The night we arrived Cuenca, I left my purse on the train from Madrid, and was in distress about it. My wallet, ID, credit cards and camera were in my purse. I asked the night reception to call RENFE on my behalf, two calls in total, to attempt to report the incident. Because of language barriers and hold times, she terminated both phone calls. I thanked her for her help.

When we checked out, imagine our surprise when we got a bill for the phone calls. I know long-distance calls come at a cost, but to charge us 9 Euros when I'm in a state of panic? Do long-distance calls in Spain on a Friday night really cost that much? Is this hospitable behavior from a hotel, to charge for phone calls when a guest is in need?

To me it suggests that the Posada doesn't care about their guests all that much beyond the niceties of checking us in and out. They will get their business no matter what, so they don't really have to try that hard.

This was a great hotel with nice comfortable rooms and a friendly staff. We had a very large balcony with a fantastic view of the parador and the gorge. It is located about 1 block from the cathedral. There is pay parking less than a block away and free parking uphill less than a half mile.

Stunning Views ...

Charmingly romantic with the most beautiful views. Marred only by the lack of air conditioning but this was always advertised as Spanish traditional ....

Staff were wonderfully friendly, especially the lady on reception in the afternoons who spoke no English (and our Spanish is very dodgy) but whose smile and helpful manner lit up everything.

With the beautiful countryside around, the 4 of us had a wonderful stop off on our travels ...

Awesome views!

A pleasant stay in a historic building. Enjoyed the views from our balcony (we had a large one, our kids had a smaller one). Finding the hotel was a little tricky! Even for our daughter who had been living in Cuenca. Turn right immediately past the cathedral, left at the dead end. The hotel is about a block up the street. You may drive up and leave your luggage (free parking by the castle), but if you are driving a larger car, I recommend walking your luggage up.

Very cute hotel

Very impressed. Knew we were getting a balcony but wow what a large one with amazing views of the valley, the Parador and the town. The room was perfect. Only problem, we didn't speak Spanish or rather poquito amount.

Time in Cuenca

The Inn has great character and a fabulous view. Wish we had a coffee set in our room also as we paid the same rate as our friends. The cookies were a nice touch though. It was quiet and clean which is extremely important in my selections. Bathroom has good lighting.
This area also has a one star Michelin reataurant which was excellent.

Loved this place Very friendly and helpful staff. The view from my room of the Alhambra was spectacular. The in was built in the 16th century and is as charming as I had hoped it would be.

Great hotel in Cuenca

This 17th century hotel has one of the best locations in Cuenca. Our room (no24) had a juliet balcony that overlooked the gorge, bridge and monastery. A fantastic view that we enjoyed throughout our stay, often over a jug of the hotels lovely sangrea. Parking is 100m from the hotel, but very reasonable at 11Euro for 24hrs. Good food in the restaurant. Great location 150m from the Cathedral in the center of the old town. We strongly recommend this hotel.

Semana Santa in Cuenca

One of the most fascinating Holy Weeks in Spain occurs in Cuenca and for the past fifty years it has coincided with Semana de Música Religiosa -- a week long offering of liturgical music performances -- one group who sand there was from Bruges.\
Location of the hotel could not be finer -- much more convenient than the overpriced parador.

The staff could not have been more cordial and accommodating. We have traveled in Spain for the past 40 years and operate an on-line Spanish fine food site in the USA. We know Spain well and I would rank our experience in Cuenca and at the Posada San José way up toward the top.

The dining room and staff are fine -- good honest well prepared unpretentious authentic meals.

Parking is available down the very narrow street. We just parked our care there and did not touch it for four days.

Great posada

I would heartily recommend this posada. The location was great, I had probably the best meal my whole trip there. My balcony overlooked the gorge and with the windows open at night, was so quiet-all I could hear were birds.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 night stay , the Posada de San Jose is situated very centrally for the historic area of Cuenca, our room was delightful with lovely views over the gorge , will definitely return.

fab and perfect location

Far superior to the parador. It has been recently upgraded. The only negative was the lack of English speaking TV and no WIFI. The owner is against TV in general but is buckling to the desire of guests to have it and the WIFI. She cannot understand why anyone would need these things since romance is the order of the day here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Highly recommended.
