The hotel grounds and room were beautiful, reception and spa staff were friendly but breakfast staff not so much. Spa facilities were decent, though the steam room and swimsuit dryer were out of order. Breakfast had a good selection of foods, though some of it was lukewarm and it took around 30 mins and an additional request to have coffee brought to the table. There were oddly a lot of crumbs down the side of the upholstery at breakfast.

We were upgraded to a suite, as I was on crutches, & needed a separate shower, which was excellent. Room was clean, with a lovely log electric fire in the sitting area, which was great for watching tv in the evening. Found the staff very helpful. My o my gripe, was the buffet breakfast, I think the calibre of this hotel should serve breakfast. The hot breakfast wasn’t replenished enough, eggs were hard, fried bread cold, instead of everyone getting a hot breakfast to their table. A big let down for a five star hotel!

Firstly the room wasn't ready on time, ok the hotel gave us a drink voucher, had a lovely drink while waiting.
Room ready by 3.30, but kids had to be out of the pool by 5.30. there was then no slippers and gowns in the room. Tried ringing reception but the phone didn't have a lead, had to move a cabinet to plug it in. Phone then wouldn't work as call was blocked by administrator??
Had to walk to reception and request robes. By 4.45, still no robes and slippers, back to reception half dressed for swimming, complained to reception again. Was then greeted by the director of operations who had no interest in listening to anything I had to say. Apologised on repeat and asked do I need another robe. Waste of time.

A dirty tray from room service with left over food on it sat outside a guest’s room from our arrival at 3pm until 11am the next day despite our raising this twice with reception. Poor quality towels in our room. The spa area ran out of towels for guests to use. Spa was generally untidy, with cups and used towels lying about.

The hotel was decorated well for Christmas as well with several Christmas trees dotted about the communal areas. Pool facilities were very good and kept clean and tidy. Room decor (which we know has been recently updated) still lacking and paint chipped in many places. Two large glasses of wine in bar £30. ‘Colourful’ wedding when we were there which took over most of the hotel. We spent most of the time in our room!!!! We had one drink in Percy French and fabric sofas were stained. What has happened to the Slieve Donard? Potential for 5 star all day long but struggling to reach 4 star I’m afraid

We had a slightly strange experience at Slieve Donard. The hotel is lovely. The room had a great view of the sea and the bed was really comfortable. The gym and spa area are great. Its location is also amazing. However on our first night we were disturbed in our room after 10.30 pm to settle a restaurant bill because we hadn't left card details at the front desk. When I mentioned this to the staff the next day they said they would speak to the manager and get back to us about it, but never did. I was also quite shocked on our last morning to be turned away from the gym and pool because it was only open to members, and not hotel guests, at that time.

Excellent hotel. Great room, very comfortable. Superb Spa. Staff very friendly and helpful. Great stay.

One minor thing that could be changed is the TV. There is no option to input an hdmi. (This is disabled). I know this may seem silly, but sometimes you just want to relax and chill with something on TV you want to watch. Having 'source' input enabled would allow you to watch your own device/program. The 'cast' function wasn't working either.
I know you don't go away to watch TV, but when you have kids and don't get to watch much other than their shows, it's nice to have the option to just relax.
If the streaming apps were even on the TV, you could login yourself. That would be an option.

Like I said, minor point. Love this hotel. Can't wait to go back!

Disappointing. Have been 3 times in last 18 months & this was unexpectedly poor. Main hotel, room & breakfast was good. Breakfast was busy but managed well. Spa however was poor. First afternoon was manic busy, no towels for 90mins, no where to even sit. We went at 8.15am next morning, was much quieter but the steam room & rain showers had not been cleaned. Floors all grime around edges. Staff on spa reception not great either, a few lessons on hospitality needed!

I chose this spot for its proximity to Slieve Donard, it was so close.. way closer than I expected. I loved the location and how it’s nestled off to the side but still in town so you can walk. You are right on the water and there are paths everywhere to get you where you want to go.

Great stay in Newcastle. Staff was very friendly and it’s a fantastic location. We were in N.I. mostly for golf, which Newcastle offers a great location if you have a rental. All of the courses we played were within a 90 minute drive.

For the price there could have been more to offer from the hotel. Breakfast was mediocre.

The room was awesome, however, I thought I “upgraded” from a King Sea View to a Suite with a Sea view. Ended up paying more for no sea view.

Putting green is just thin turf.

The spa and its facilities were great! But, you only have access to the spa facilities the day of your “treatment.”

The bar on site is very nice with a solid selection of cocktails and beer.

Another downside is the lack of food after 10 pm. It’s either a pizza or cold sandwiches for the 24 hour room service.

Overall, felt like an awesome place, just lacking in some areas where you don’t feel like you’re getting what you’re paying for.

Room was dangerously hot for my dog with no way of cooling it down. The windows barely opened and the fan supplied just blew the warm air around. The room was small for a deluxe and there was nothing luxurious about it. No caffeinated coffee provided, only decaf. Cleanliness was also an issue with the bathroom having several hairs on the toilet and bath and the bedroom fixtures were very dusty. No separate shower only shower over bath tub which was not what I expected in the deluxe room.

Disappointing and unacceptable for a hotel supposedly of such high caliber. Despite the fact that we booked a junior suite with sea view the room’s windows were filthy upon arrival. We got conflicting stories about the cleaning schedule: first every 2-3 days, then every 15 days, finally every three months. The manager mentioned that it costs them two-grand each time to clean which is really not our concern. They also neglected to take a credit card for incidentals at check-in, leading to an awkward situation when I tried to charge brunch to the room. Nothing would've been done about the windows if we hadn't followed up several times, including a long call to Expedia. Two members of reception were quite argumentative, almost acting like it was a favor for them to let us stay at the hotel, rather than valuing us as customers. Most of the staff, including Michael at reception, were very friendly, and Hannah and the spa staff were excellent. We ended up leaving with a bad taste in our mouths.

Truly an exceptional hotel. I grew up in the area and it has continued its history of providing an experience that excels (locals just call it “The Slieve”). The amenities are fantastic with the spa facilities, snooker room, drawing room for a peaceful morning. Breakfast in the main dining area with views of the Mounre Mountains is an experience itself. Just 1 night was memorable

My mum uses a Zimmer and the acces for her limited mobility was amazing. The staff truly went over and above from the second we walked in to the bar, restaurant, concierge, restaurant, spa etc.... I don't know how they get to know everyones names as so many people go through the door every day. Everyone was exceptional. The bed was like sleeping on a cloud. Food was out of this world. We weren't bothered too much yet, restaurant seemed to know just by a look, that we were going to ask for something or needed something. The place is warm, airy, fresh and the atmosphere was cheerful. Thank you so much. You made my Mums day and night.

Perfect location and setting but overpriced

I would love to give this hotel a 5star review but unfortunately it was lacking in quite a few ways. The location and setting is superb. Newcastle is a fantastic town with amazing scenery overlooking our gorgeous mournes. Check in was perfect reception was so friendly and informative. Our room looked the part but the bathroom was a bit underwhelming and could do with a refurbish. However is was clean and good shower.
The spa area was also underwhelming.. sorry. We waited until family time was over but the swim noodles where still lying about as was bits of food,plastic cups and a used plaster on the floor beside pool.
I think they should consider a more eco alternative to the plastic cups at water fountain.

The sauna and steam room was lovely with an amazing sea view but you have to look past all the parked cars.
I don’t think the £315 price for room was justifiable unfortunately
Breakfast was really good. Loads of Choices and great quality food. Waiting staff were really attentive and courteous. Breakfast room was stunning!

I booked slieve donard as I wanted to treat my wife to a comfortable weekend as it was our anniversary, and I’ve heard many good things about this property. Unfortunately for us it wasn’t anything like that. The girl at reception was rude as I checked in, I put it down to having a bad day, but she was the same every day. (Our booking was 2 nights) when we went to our room it was nothing like what was on the hotels.com
Website. There were broken tiles on the floor, stains on the walls, musty smell. Etc..
So I tried to call reception, but the phone didn’t work. So I went down to reception, and waited quite a while before the receptionist came out from the adjoining room, I told him ( a different receptionist) I wasn’t happy, and was given another room. I could go on and on, but frankly I shouldn’t be doing this . As i rarely complain.
I rate it 3 stars,
Not worth it.

We had a really lovely one night stay here to celebrate my husband’s 60th birthday. I had emailed the hotel before arrival to let them know of the occasion, and they kindly gave us a room upgrade and left a note and cupcakes in the room. Acknowledgements like this really make a hotel stand out and we were very happy.

It was the first time we had stayed since the refurbishment, and all areas of the hotel are beautiful. The room itself was stunning, with views of both of the sea and the Mournes. We are local enough so the sight isn’t uncommon to us, but looking out at it from the hotel room was just spectacular!

All the staff are very kind, courteous, friendly and hardworking. We dined in the town but had a couple of cocktails each in the Wolf bar which were very high quality. We appreciate a good cocktail!

The breakfast buffet was lovely.

Had a fantastic 2 night stay at the slieve donard hotel,staff are amazing and friendly, got an upgrade room with fantastic seaview, the spa was amazing especially the jacuzzi, could sit in it all day,only slight negative comment would be,we booked a table in jj farrells restaurant on the Friday evening for a festive dinner, but were told that they weren't starting the festive menu for another few days breakfast was absolutely superb, an amazing choice,,thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely come back next year all being well

I preferred my 1st visit last Nov. Hotel -stunning location. Entrance hallway was beautifully decorated.

quick check in but when got to room our keys wouldnt work. A cleaner kindly let us in. I tried to call recept to ask Concierge to bring us new keys but the phone did not work. We had our dog stay with us which was great but i felt that our room had a \" dog\" smell when we entered the room. Couldn't open windows. Some of the decor of the room looked a little grubby (e.g door frame in bathroom, chipped paint , a lamp that didnt plug in). Wasnt impressed for being a 5 star hotel. Delighted we can bring our dog but do feel hygiene standards need to be at highest. There was hair pins lying on my floor from a previous guest.

Bathrooms at recept were disgusting and not cleaned all evening. Bin was over flowing by end of night.

We had a lovely evening in the bar - fantastic singer. Thankfully had read reviews about the service charge added to all drinks bills. Paid £24 for 2 gins to then get a bill for £26.40. I went to bar myself for rest of night. Tips should be at customers discretion.

Got a dirty glass at one point. When i asked for another glass the bar man just lifted the drink and threw it down the sink. He couldnt find another glass as they were all dirty so offered me an alternative then looked annoyed i asked for fruit. not 5* standards.

Breakfast was just ok,cooked breakfast not great and we were put in drawing room without being asked. Didnt have same feel.

It was our first time in the part of Ireland and we had a wonderful stay, we really couldn't have asked for more. Unfortunately we missed the option of getting a sea view but I believe we could have selected this if we spotted the follow up email but apart from the we had a stay that will live long in our memory.

We didn’t like that the room was very small! Four steps to the bed from the door! The hotel was very, very warm and the windows only opened an inch. There was no bath and only one bathrobe in the room. The bathroom wasn’t very clean either. The hairdryer in the room had poor performance and there was only one socket at the door for to plug it in, Overall are stay was average at best! Very unimpressed for a 5 star hotel!

We stayed here as a family with our small baby for our wedding anniversary for 3 nights. As a 5 star hotel you expect top class luxury but I think the days of that are gone. The staff were so inexperienced. I know everyone has to start somewhere but there is a lack of training from reception to bar/restaurant staff. Our room was nice but lighting poor for doing hair etc. no coffee or tea in room and the door was ate which looked like teeth marks and carpet torn obviously from the hotel being dog friendly so left the room looking grubby. The bar for food and drink was expensive and there was no atmosphere. The Saturday night there was entertainment and it was poor to say the least. We’ve stayed in better 3 star hotels for a fraction of the price as here is very expensive. Only thing I will rate is the leisure facilities and a big shout out to Ciara who done my massage in the spa. Such a lady and fantastic at her job.
