I have stayed several times over the last 12 years. It is a perfect location for visiting Valletta and the surrounding area. All the facilities are excellent as are the rooms. A regular shuttle service up to the centre is very helpful. The staff are lovely and always happy to help out. Breakfast was excellent as usual but sadly the food in the restaurant and bar had changed quite a bit since we stayed last year and was disappointing.

This hotel is set in the perfect location. It's a 10 minute walk up the hill into Valletta. There is a free shuttle both ways to the center if you can't manage the hill. Wear flat shoes, the stone in Valletta is now so smooth it was very easy to slip and slide in the wrong shoes. You can go on many trips from Vallarta. We used Get your guide - pool is stunning and the beach area is really nice so you can look at the Harbor all day if you went. We loved staying at this hotel, it is very dated and I believe they're going to be renovating it. It would've been nice to have different music being played in the evening at the bar area but it was OK if you were in your 80's. We had breakfast included which was good and ate once at the Tiki restaurant. Didn't try the other options. Bolt was super easy and efficient. Staff were lovely, room old but clean. There is a ferry 10 mins walk from hotel if you want to go over to Sliema for a few hours. I suggest the day trip to Sicily, Gozo Island, hop on bus to Mlina, 3 cities trip and Marsaxlokk fishing village for seafood dinner- the bus goes there for €2 . We could not have picked a better hotel for the kind of trip we had planned. Looking forward to going back there when it is renovated. Highly Recommend!

Great waterside location , with super pool, mini beach and large rooms. However, as others mention, the property is dated- the bathroom especially needed a refurb. The hotel had a 1980s feel of an establishment that was once grand but just didn’t move with the times. That said, the staff are helpful, the pool is a plus point to cool down in after a day of sight seeing and there is a free shuttle bus to take you up the hill into town .

The property is old and needs renovation , it’s ideally located for visiting Valletta but not for people who have issues climbing stairs as there are lots outside .
For a 5 star property the check in was not good as we were not informed of the free shuttle they provide nor the sauna , steam room costs which we found out later that the indoor pool is free but the spa is run privately and change 15 euros to use the sauna unless your having a spa treatment .

The hotel is some what dated. The main lobby is fine. The pool floor area needs regrouting. The little broken chips are difficult to walk over. Perhaps, a hose down at night would remove the chipped grout pieces.
The rooms are big, clean, and the view is great. The beds were comfortable and cozy. The airconditioning worked well. The bathroom is big. We’d prefect a walk in shower than a deep tub.
The breakfast is a generous buffet with handmade eggs and omlets.

This hotel is beautifully maintained. The rooms are well cleaned and all staff is very friendly and helpful. The concierge helped us make dinner reservations with a good choice. We had a wonderful breakfast buffet in the morning. Charcuterie board for snacks, and well mixed drinks. This hotel sits near the old city center of Valletta and on the port- great location for areas of exploration. The only drawback was not emough outlets for charging electronic devices and the need for the British electrical outlet adapters. The rooms have an old world charm. The pool area is exceptional. So nice to use after a day of excursions.

This hotel has 5 stars on the door but I don’t think this is a good reflection. Upon arrival, staff were friendly, provided us with drinks and allowed us to check in early. All of which is very good.

Unfortunately, whilst the hotel decor is nice, it is dated. Within the room, one of the draws was falling apart, the shower head would never point where it needed to due to the plastic shower hose, and there was plenty of wear and tear. The AC did very little to cool the room to a comfortable temperature. The bed was comfy and large. Although I was provided with twin beds when my booking stated it would be a king. We put the beds together and this did just fine.

The location is excellent, being so close to Valetta as well as having a good sized pool, pool bar and access to the harbour for swimming. I don’t think there’s another hotel that offers the proximity as well as the facilities mentioned.

Checkout was frustrating. It took 25 minutes for me to check out due to large queues. I arrived to check out 20 minutes before my taxi was due to arrive, assuming this would be more than sufficient time. Due to the delays, i almost missed my taxi to the airport.

All in all, staff were friendly enough. But the hotel is dated and needing a refresh. The location is excellent but checking out needs to be improved.

The not so good is that it’s incredibly tired, like it’s in the early 90s still, the foods not great and most of the staff seem somewhat detached. I heard it’s closing in February for a much needed refit. I would avoid until it reopens.

Breakfast was HUGE… bed was comfy… highly recommend if you want a hotel with direct beach access and close to Valetta. Finally, the spa was so lovely and I got a facial that was so soothing! Debora was the therapist and she’s just a sweetheart!

The hotel is in a great location. The pool and bar are fantastic with opportunity to swim in the sea. However, for our taste the decor was a bit dated and in a few places felt it needed updating (cracked tiles etc). Finally, check in was a bit slow. Other than that, I would definitely recommend staying here and would stay here again when we return to Malta.

The hotel is comfortable, in working order and in beautiful surroundings, it is however, absolutely not a five star.
Our room positioning was great overlooking the harbour, we were on level one but the buffet is level five and reception is six!
The rooms were serviced every day but really need more attention - you could write your name in the dust on the bedside cabinets!
The showers are old fashioned, you push the shower head into a bracket. Ours would turn sideways due to the water pressure, saturating the bathroom! We did report this and it got better but there was no sign of a proper repair.
Breakfast was chaos, the couple of times we went, we were met by a queue of at least twenty people in front of us, so we gave up the rest of the week! There's a notice which encourages guests to go to breakfast earlier as it's quieter, but given we get up early for work the rest of the year, we have no interest in getting up at the crack of dawn just to eat on holiday! They need to do better, reorganise and rethink their timings, so it's not a cattle market at popular times! Similarly with check in, waited far too long!
The hotel also charged me £1400 despite being fully paid up through Expedia. Luckily, I'd noticed on my bill a couple of days after and they refunded the same € amount but I was then left £40 short due to the exchange rate. Fortunately, the credit card co are sorting. One Receptionist said yes she's made a mistake, some mistake! The apology was distinctly lacking!

Outside hotel needs a refresh. Beautiful gardens etc. Public areas are great. The buffet is ok but some food appears to be lightly cooked ie sausages. Chairs in di ing room hit and miss as wobbly, staff often unable to understand stuff.
Room was musty, bathroom dated, no spare plugs, no usb, basically room needed to be updated. Balcony very bland, great view but no plants.
Bar areas excellent and coffee good. Pool area good as well.
Position of hotel fine, they did provide a shuttle to main town but that ended 8pm.

Stunning property. You get a sense of grandeur as you approach, and it's to an excellent standard inside. Staff are friendly and helpful. Rooms are also great. Buffet breakfast has great choice, and we also used the restaurant in the evening for a couple of nights ('Admiral's Landing'). The food was very good and has a great view to the harbour. The hotel is in a great location; close to city centre and right on waters' edge of the harbour.

The rooms are spacious and the showers are powerful, although the rooms are a bit dated.
The hotel is in a great position a few minutes walk from the Triton fountain.
The buffet breakfast has a great variety and all well presented. The staff are all so friendly and very helpful.
The outdoor pool area is very spacious and there are plenty of sunbeds available.
The only downside of the hotel is there are a lot of steps or a steep climb from the hotel to the Main Street so not ideal if you have walking difficulties
We have stayed here before and will stay again in the future.

We visited around Easter and the majority of the hotel's features did not seem to be available. The outdoor bar was closed, as was the steam room and sauna. The hot tub was also more of a lukewarm tub. The \"private beach\" is also very small.

That said, the staff we friendly, professional and courteous. The breakfast was pretty standard hotel fare, and the hotel is quite centrally located if you are interested in visiting Valetta.

This is meant to be a 5* hotel. I would say there were elements of 5*, 4* and 3*. The staff were the best thing about the hotel - they really tried hard to make up for the dated nature of the property . The room was nice - had all that you would expect and lovely views of the bay. However, it was a bit rough around the edges but I expected that after reading the reviews. I was happy overall as I paid what I considered to be a fair price. Would I stay again - yes but it wouldn’t be my first choice . I stayed in March when a lot of the other boutique hotels are closed.

We found the Excelsior to be ideally located near the entrance to Valletta, with a welcoming and most accommodating staff. From the moment we walked through the front door, we could tell we were going to have a wonderful stay, from the grand stairway, lobby bar, buffet restaurant and dining room, to our room. We arrived early on a flight from Sicily and asked if we could check our bags. Instead, they found a room for us and we were in our room before 10 AM. We need taxi service to various places we wanted to visit on the island and all was taken care of with a request at the conciere desk. We plan to return next year. Malta is wonderful and the Excelsior enhanced our stay appreciably.

How this hotel can be rated a 5 star hotel is beyond me! Even though we tried two different rooms, the experience was the same: Very outdated rooms! Moldy smell from the anything but clean carpet. Bathroom tiles cracked everywhere and mold in the shower.

The rooms were - best case - a 3 star rating worthy.

I have to stress that the room maids were the sweetest and best ever, and that the staff in general did a good job.

But having paid for a 5 star hotel, our disappointment cannot be hidden. Our first and last visit to this hotel.

Lovely location and nice room with great view. Shower was not good - v difficult to get temperature correct and badly positioned so hard to get under the shower head! Air con was feeble. Pool is lovely but beach is v scruffy not nice (and I changed since our last visit two years ago.
Unfortunately a member of staff spilt a whole tray of drinks, including red wine (not even ours!) on my wife which was shocking and resulted in two days of trying get our clothes cleaned. They didn't even offer us a free drink let alone a discount on the final bill.
Not sure we'll be back.

WiFi throughout, but ideally it needs upgrading, as it's too slow for uploading large files. But OK for basic use.

Great water pressure, so shower was glorious!

Rooms are good value out of season.

The hotel needs a renovation though, as it seems stuck in 2002. The bathroom fixtures had mold and need replacing, and the big red comforter on the bed needs to go. Everything is outdated. Check in and check out were slow due to outdated technology also. Overall good stay, but would prefer room updates next time.

The harbour view level 3 room was very clean with comfortable/firm bed, and staff across the hotel could not do enough, but the interior and fittings are now over 20 years old and crying out for a complete refit to hold its 5 Star billing which in it's current condition it does not merit. Location to walk into Valletta central is ideal. Our first visit to Malta and we will be back, just not to the Excelsior.

This is a great traditional hotel and the staff are marvelous. We had one issue with our room and were quickly switched to another, upgraded, room, and recieved numerous apologies for the inconvenience, which was minimal.
The formal restaurant is lovely and the breakfast buffet (which you may choose to prepay) is excellent. The mushrooms were our favorite.
My wife and I visited in the off season and appreciated the value.
This hotel is located right outside Valletta's walls, so it is handy to everything in the city. And, a small note for those of us of a certain age, the hotel provides an oft running shuttle to the city gates at top of the hill, even though it is not far at all.
Most recommended.

My stay at the Grand Hotel Excelsior was a disappointment, defined by \"nickel-and-diming\" and a lack of transparency that is entirely out of sync with a 5-star rating.

Operational Failures:

Pricing Inconsistency: I was quoted three different rates for the same breakfast: €40 in the lounge, €32 at reception, and €19 via the online platform. When I requested that Guest Relations honor the advertised online rate, they were slow to respond and eventually refused. There is zero rate integrity here.

Questionable Policies: The first interaction upon arrival was a demand for a €150 deposit to cover \"damages.\" Treating guests as a liability from the moment they check in is an insult. Furthermore, charging €5 for a lost key card is petty for an establishment of this supposed caliber; these are budget-hotel tactics.

The Positives: The stay was only redeemed by the cleaning staff, who were exceptionally helpful and diligent, and the shuttle bus service, which was a convenient way to get into town.

Conclusion: While the property is physically impressive, the management culture is rigid and unfriendly. A true luxury hotel prioritizes guest experience over rigid, petty fee structures. I will not be returning and cannot recommend this hotel to business or leisure travelers expecting genuine 5-star service.

We are second time guest in this hotel, this time we come with another couple of friends , we chose de luxe room and we don t received , they offer a lower classed room , we where entitled to receive a bottle of wine per room and we don t received..
We called one day before the arrival asking if is possible to make an early check in the tell us that is possible and they will leave a note at the reception. On the arrival day at the reception they did nt know nothing about it and we wait untill 2 PM to receive that rooms which was note the rooms that we have paid.
We will not come bak to this hotel anymore, this is not a five star hotel!
