The positive first:Extremely nice staff and ideal location.

How this hotel can be rated a 5 star hotel is beyond me! Even though we tried two different rooms, the experience was the same: Very outdated rooms! Moldy smell from the anything but clean carpet. Bathroom tiles cracked everywhere and mold in the shower.

The rooms were - best case - a 3 star rating worthy.

I have to stress that the room maids were the sweetest and best ever, and that the staff in general did a good job.

But having paid for a 5 star hotel, our disappointment cannot be hidden. Our first and last visit to this hotel.

Lovely location and nice room with great view. Shower was not good - v difficult to get temperature correct and badly positioned so hard to get under the shower head! Air con was feeble. Pool is lovely but beach is v scruffy not nice (and I changed since our last visit two years ago.
Unfortunately a member of staff spilt a whole tray of drinks, including red wine (not even ours!) on my wife which was shocking and resulted in two days of trying get our clothes cleaned. They didn't even offer us a free drink let alone a discount on the final bill.
Not sure we'll be back.

Great hotel quite dated decor but absolutely spotless. All the staff we encountered were excellent very friendly and helpful. Our room was really large with view over the front steps ( there are over 80 up to the road) and courtyard but was nice. Bathroom clean and spacious with red hot water. Beautiful views from the breakfast restaurant and various food options which were all excellent

Very nice hotel in great location on the edge of Valleta town. Good facilities although one of the restaurants was closed and the outdoor pool was not open for season yet. Staff were very friendly and helpful especially the concierge service. Room was Ok though a little tired. Didn't try the Spa services as we found them very expensive.

Indoor pool was nicely heated, so can be used in winter too, when outside pool is too cold.
Smallish, but well-equipped gym.
Nice breakfast buffet.
WiFi throughout, but ideally it needs upgrading, as it's too slow for uploading large files. But OK for basic use.
Decor is quite dated now, but has charm I think!
Great water pressure, so shower was glorious!
Staff are really nice & make me feel welcome.
Rooms are good value out of season.
I would definitely come back here!

The staff were friendly and helpful, and the food at the breakfast buffet was good. The room was large and nice and quiet. The bathroom towels were super soft! The hotel needs a renovation though, as it seems stuck in 2002. The bathroom fixtures had mold and need replacing, and the big red comforter on the bed needs to go. Everything is outdated. Check in and check out were slow due to outdated technology also. Overall good stay, but would prefer room updates next time.

The harbour view level 3 room was very clean with comfortable/firm bed, and staff across the hotel could not do enough, but the interior and fittings are now over 20 years old and crying out for a complete refit to hold its 5 Star billing which in it's current condition it does not merit. Location to walk into Valletta central is ideal. Our first visit to Malta and we will be back, just not to the Excelsior.

This is a great traditional hotel and the staff are marvelous. We had one issue with our room and were quickly switched to another, upgraded, room, and recieved numerous apologies for the inconvenience, which was minimal.
The formal restaurant is lovely and the breakfast buffet (which you may choose to prepay) is excellent. The mushrooms were our favorite.
My wife and I visited in the off season and appreciated the value.
This hotel is located right outside Valletta's walls, so it is handy to everything in the city. And, a small note for those of us of a certain age, the hotel provides an oft running shuttle to the city gates at top of the hill, even though it is not far at all.
Most recommended.

My stay at the Grand Hotel Excelsior was a disappointment, defined by \"nickel-and-diming\" and a lack of transparency that is entirely out of sync with a 5-star rating.

Operational Failures:

Pricing Inconsistency: I was quoted three different rates for the same breakfast: €40 in the lounge, €32 at reception, and €19 via the online platform. When I requested that Guest Relations honor the advertised online rate, they were slow to respond and eventually refused. There is zero rate integrity here.

Questionable Policies: The first interaction upon arrival was a demand for a €150 deposit to cover \"damages.\" Treating guests as a liability from the moment they check in is an insult. Furthermore, charging €5 for a lost key card is petty for an establishment of this supposed caliber; these are budget-hotel tactics.

The Positives: The stay was only redeemed by the cleaning staff, who were exceptionally helpful and diligent, and the shuttle bus service, which was a convenient way to get into town.

Conclusion: While the property is physically impressive, the management culture is rigid and unfriendly. A true luxury hotel prioritizes guest experience over rigid, petty fee structures. I will not be returning and cannot recommend this hotel to business or leisure travelers expecting genuine 5-star service.

We are second time guest in this hotel, this time we come with another couple of friends , we chose de luxe room and we don t received , they offer a lower classed room , we where entitled to receive a bottle of wine per room and we don t received..
We called one day before the arrival asking if is possible to make an early check in the tell us that is possible and they will leave a note at the reception. On the arrival day at the reception they did nt know nothing about it and we wait untill 2 PM to receive that rooms which was note the rooms that we have paid.
We will not come bak to this hotel anymore, this is not a five star hotel!

This is a grand lady of a hotel. A little bit tired in places but it has a good feeling to it. It reminds me of a cruise liner.
The Reception staff are efficient but lack warmth, and the food and beverage staff are mostly chaotic, but if you brace yourself for it and allow for extra time and mistakes, you get there in the end - some more experienced staff at breakfast save the day. The whole food offering could do with an overhaul - it’s neither exciting nor extensive.
However, for all that, the hotel has a charm about it, a location, a setting and poolside that is fabulous, so it makes it my hotel of choice in Valletta.

While I don’t think it merits 5 stars as it shows a few signs of faded glory, I would recommend it to anyone, especially in low season when rates are very reasonable and fair

The only thing that let my stay down was the length of time it took to check out - a long queue with two few staff and a long process, my taxi arrived and almost left it took that long.

With the influx of modern and renovated hotels within the city of Valetta, the hotel needs to renovate its rooms and bring them into the twenty first century.

The hotel is considered to be 5 star. I would give it 4. Overall the room was clean, but dated and the carpet could do with a good cleaning. Service adequate but not overly attentive and certainly not 5 star. The maid would arrive every morning knocking at the door at 8:30am to clean. We commented to reception that was too early and they just shrugged their shoulders and seemed indifferent. On the upside, the location is very good and views over to Sliema are beautiful. It's just a quick walk into Valletta.

The Grand Hotel Excelsior is a lovely property with a charming, old–style atmosphere, even though it was only completed in 2007. The classic aesthetic gives it a warm, elegant feel. My room was very spacious, and the view was genuinely beautiful — definitely a highlight of the stay.

I also loved the spa; it was relaxing, well-kept, and a great addition to the overall experience. The convenient beach access is another major plus, making it easy to enjoy without any hassle.

While keeping the old charm, some amenities, however, feel a bit outdated. The automatic room lights, elevator security system, and bath amenities could use a more modern, functional refresh to match today’s standards. Still, the overall comfort, character, and excellent location make this hotel a very enjoyable place to stay.

With a little updating, it could easily elevate its already pleasant experience.

It is a great place in great location however the hotel is tired especially for a very expensive terrace room. It is stuck in a time warp and worn out - bed, chairs carpets. The staff in the bars were very slow and poor, particularly at the poolside bar.
The addition of a shuttle bus up the hill is great unless 8 Americans want to pile in as well and were abbusive to us and the driver. For 400 euros a night I also expected breakfast!!

This was our 7th or 8th stay here. Having tried others “just for a change”, we now would not go anywhere else. Well worth booking a full sea view. Property perhaps slightly dated, and the building is not a thing of beauty, but acres of space, charming staff and wonderful pools, indoor, outdoor, children’s and jacuzzi.
