Whilst the public areas are clean and tidy, my room was run down and was dusty and dirty in places

All needs can be met without leaving the complex if your interested in that can of stay in Nepal.

We were amazed when we walk in to lobby and saw the outdoor dining area and courtyards but our happiness ended when we enter the room. The room smell so dump, the rug/mat is dirty like never cleaned for years same as the lobby desk floor mat. The towels were literally not in useable condition. Bed linens smell so bad.The shower head , faucet all are dirty lots of marks/dirt. The chicken curry we had taste like butter chicken also dal is tasteless.Evening live music is nice touch but if the artists has mike/speaker and connected to whole courtyard speaker it will creat nice ambience.
Breakfast service staff talks so loudly that I heard what they had in their dinner last night no professionalism. The stay was way below than what we expect. Only good things is the lady who escort us to room during check-in was very professional and the courtyard sitting areas with bonfire adds nice atmosphere.

The Kathmandu Guesthouse is the first Guesthouse in Kathmandu. Its rich history only adds to the atmosphere of the place. The service is always excellent. The Staff is always professional and ready to assist you with any questions or problems you may have. The rooms are always clean and very comfortable. The food is outstanding. The service is five star. I have stayed here many times during my seven visits to Nepal. The Kathmandu Guesthouse is an experience of exceptional hospitality and excellence!

Ok, this is hard to write because it is a beautiful property! Character in abundance ! Well trained staff ! Great welcome and my room was excellent perceived value for money ! Food for lunch and dinner was served fresh and at the correct temperature!

Now the negatives ! My room was terribly noisy through badly fitting windows with zero insulation between room walls and the ceiling ! All the early evening was clip clop of people walking ! Not other fault of either the people just poor design with the floorings used and the echo off the walls

Then between 1am and 3am a large party of people sounded like 20-30 arrived and made there ways to there rooms with suitcases clanking and raised voices and slamming doors ! Now whenever I have checked in at those hours in other properties I was reminded to be quiet and respect the other guests ! In lots of oversea hotels I was given a card in my language to make sure I understood !

So I maybe got 3 hours sleep as I had a 6am check out to catch my flight out of country !

I truly home when you perform another renovation of the rooms you consider noise insulation!

Will I be back ! Yes I will as your property was outstanding in the visual sense!

Hopefully the nighttime people checking are more respectfull!

I stayed here for 2 nights before and 1 night after a trekking expedition. It’s my first time in Kathmandu, so nothing to compare it to, but nice and convenient in the middle of Thamel. Hotel is pretty clean, the staff are really helpful. I was able to leave a bag at the hotel whilst away trekking and the staff booked a taxi to the airport for me.

The property has a wonderful garden where all can share, it is centrally located in Thamel, and the hotel is gated at both ends giving a sense of great security. I am at the room which can be improved to give it a modern facility. Overall it has a much better condition than many hotels in Thamel

The original KGH is now a distant memory

Good old KGH remains my favourite place in Kathmandu. It went through an overdue renovation recently and unfortunately it lost a bit of its soul in the process. What remains though is a great hotel, fantastic location, nice rooms and the garden remains a great meeting and dining place.

If home is where the heart is, then consider Kathmandu Guest House your Nepali home. The energy is amazing. The Garden was designed by the same architect as Garden of Dreams and it is truly a wonderful dream to explore and settle into the endless, wonderful corners. The staff is warm, authentic, helpful, and a community- dedicated to top-notch hospitality and the well-being of all guests. The rooms are charming, comfortable, with oversized balconies and hot water- always. The food is delicious. Everything will be done to accommodate and please guests, you will find peace in the garden and/or make new like-minded friends, and - in all honesty- it will be hard to leave. A most generous stay that encompasses the best of Nepal. Couldn't recommend enough. An experience. An institution. The best of memories. Authentic Nepali magic. And visit MONA- a museum of Nepali Art on the grounds.

A Thamel Classic

A classic of Thamel, located in the midst of the tourist section, KGH offers a quiet refuge when you need to get out of the chaos.

The buffet breakfast was better many we’ve had while doing the standard US chain motels ‘breakfast included’ buffets; real food, not processed. Great coffee too!

Stayed here several times since 1991 and it keeps getting better!

We stayed at the KGH only one night and that will probably be our last time. Right from the beginning the service was terrible. I asked the male receptionist about the availabilities of their standard room but he said he had to ask his superior. A lady named SONA came and she informed us that they only have Deluxe rooms available and they were $100 per night. I had called KGH the night before to make sure they had rooms available and they informed me there was plenty. They even had standard rooms ($60) and garden view ($85) available on Expedia but because we had foreign ID cards they tried to rip us off. It's off season so they were trying to make extra money out of tourists. I ended up booking a garden view room from Expedia and let me tell you, there was no view and the room floors were really dusty. My feet were black by the time I went to bed. Will not stay here again.

It’s a beautiful property in the midst of Thamel. Initially we experienced some unprofessional handling of our issue with the air conditioning in our room. On the final day, the courteous Duty Manager shifted us to a good room where the AC was working properly. Overall a good experience otherwise. Management should take care of this.

Not enough thought was put in designing the room I was in. There was no cupboard, all my clothes were hanging in the room right on my face. The toilet sink was in the room, not inside the toilet and there was no towel rack next to the sink. Every time after washing my hands or face I had to go to the toilet to dry myself off. The speed of the wifi was too slow and some of the time it wasn't working.

However, in spite of all these, the garden and the smiles of the staff made my day. I will probably stay here again, and enjoy an afternoon coffee in the garden.

This hotel has a cohesive, positive, feel about it - there is a good staff ethos and a can-do attitude. Service is efficient and unfussed, partly because of the long experience this hotel has had with hosting all types of visitors, from gap year students to hardened mountaineers. Good value. I discovered this guest house for myself sone years ago and have not explored elsewhere since. It does the job very well.

It's like a sanctuary in the middle of Thamel. When you go in the gate, you leave all the hustle and bustle behind you. Sometimes they have a fire in the courtyard at night, which is nice. You can have drinks and talk with your friends. The rooms are somewhat simple, but totally adequate. Breakfast is OK if all you want is yogurt, fruit, toast, eggs, and coffee.

KGH is the best place in Thamel to stay. The staff and the garden are wonderful. After our group returned from trekking KGH provided a quiet space to rest. It is fantastic to see so many people from around the globe either starting or finishing their trek from this place.

I stayed at Kathmandu Guest House because of a recommendation from a friend who loved it. I liked the hotel but I agree with the review from the lonely planet that in dollar terms you can get better rooms elsewhere. My room was very very basic, and super noisy because it was right outside the house keeping closet so there was constant hassle and bustle and slamming and chatter right outside my door. My friend paid an extra £12 a night for her room and said her room was lovely and had a balcony so I think you just have to be really careful which room you go for. However I do think £47 a night is too much for a room in Kathmandu. I wasn’t a fan of my room but the garden was very beautiful and peaceful. Overall it was a nice place to stay.

What a disappointment. The room was small and bathroom was dirty and smelly. Each time I needed to wash my hands sink was leaking. No room service menu offered in the room. No welcome drinks offered to our group at checkin when it was offered to the people next to us. So many shortfalls noticed. When I went to mention the issue to the gentlemen working at the reception, I could notice that he did not know how to handle the situation. Did not apologize for issues encountered. No service recovery offered and staff not trained properly. Will never returned again

Our third stay at KMGH between treks and trips further afield.This time I pay a bit more and the room was lovely - in the main block on the 2 nd floor.
We liked this place , lots of activity with trekkers coming and going , relaxing garden and really helpful staff.

Has been upgraded since I stayed there in 2011. Gardens still as nice as I remember. An oasis from the madness of the Thamel in Kathmandu. The recent banning of cars in the heart of the Thamel makes this an even nicer place to stay, although it is a bit harder to get to by taxi. Rates very reasonable for what you get. Overall, a great place to stay in Kathmandu.

High hopes, but...

While the courtyard and grounds were beautiful and the staff friendly and attentive, the rooms were lacking. The beds were clean and the showers were hot, but the towels were dingy and tattered. Wifi was spotty at best- but that was of little significance to my overall rating.

The location is great, it's in Thamel and you can go any where.
The standard room doesn't have any refrigerator, sleepers.
Always i argued staffs about them.
The breakfast was great, very delicious.
There is only pick up from international airport and there isn't for domestic flights. Transfer shuttle is only for pick up service and for back to airport you must pay for reservation service.
They had live traditional music every night. It was very nice.

The rooms and furniture are are getting run down. Although I did appreciate the functioning a/c and lots of lights in the room. The bathroom can be improved. Cleanliness of the sink and toilet need attention. There are no coffee/tea making facilities in the room. You need to request for hot water for the flask provided. Food prices are similar to other restaurants in the area and the menu is extensive. Breakfast is good and service is very friendly, professional and helpful.

An oasis in the midst of Thamel

After nearly 3 weeks in Nepal, we ended with several nights at the Kathmandu Guest House and it was a wonderful way to conclude our trip! The staff was wonderful, the rooms a true delight, and the gardens a welcomed respite for our weary group. While the noise of Thamel is unavoidable, everything else about KGH exceeded expectations.

Sanctuary in the middle of Thamel

I stayed here for two days so that I could acclimate before moving on to Pokhara. It's right in the middle of Thamel, but walled off from the hustle and bustle. Once you walk through the gate, it's like you've entered a sanctuary. A nice place to come back to after a full day of exploring Patan, Bhaktipur, etc. On a nice afternoon, you can even settle back into one of the lawn chairs and sunbathe. At night, there's a fire pit by the bar, which is also nice.

Guest House Stays for our Family Vocation

Located in Thamel, Kathmandu, is a good location. The facility is really classic, many rooms needed to be renovated, especially the followings:
1) Heated water pressure was higher than normal water, we almost got burnt during shower. (Room 825).
2) Air cond loss heated air supply in the middle of the night (2 out of 6 nights) and awaken rudely.
3) Breakfast in the cold morning was not a good experience, the hotel should have provided us discount for that.
4) Pre-Booked room was not available, and the upgrade was not free, we've got charged US$10+ more per room.

Otherwise, breakfasts were great, especially the oats every morning.

If all the 4 \"unpleasant experiences\", it would have been a great stay. We stayed because of worrying of cancellation charges and hassles in a dusty environment.

Hope the management could leverage your power in Parliment, to convince the Nepalese government to focus of recovery effort for the roads, and reduce the dust levels in Kathmandu, and improve all the rocky roads.

Great location, relatively quiet. Nice garden to relax in. Bed a bit hard is only complaint. Nice peace and relaxing environment in the chaos of Thamel.

Oasis in Thamel

It is not a luxury property, but it is comfortable. Once inside you feel miles away from the dust and mayhem of traffic in Kathmandu.

Great. Super helpful staff. Would stay again.

Super quiet given the area it is in. There is a beautiful garden with sunshine to chill out in.
I received a very warm welcome, complimentary coffee on arrival as I was planning the rest of my stay, room was upgraded and despite the hotel being very busy I was always looked after and greeted when I was returning to my room.
Really nice rooms (they look like they have recently been renovated), great shower & modern bathroom.

I booked a Garden view room and got a room near the garden view rooms that had only a view of a wall with a picture of a tree with 5 birds on it. i told management who said they would come back with me but they didnt. Nothing wrong with the picture but paying the extra for a room with a view was misleading esp when there was no natural light. Service and tax are included on every bill but the staff still hover for a tip. not their fault but the greed of the hotel itself. made me feel a bit awkward every time but I'm not paying service twice.

the safe didn't work and it took hours for a new one to come which was left on full display.

the hotel was def not worth the money given what else is on offer in KTM. I think it relies on cashing in on a romantic history which may not turn out to be a terrific long term strategy.

In the heart of Tamal

It was good. It was clean, the breakfast was really good. The wifi reception in my room was very strong. The location of this guest house is the great selling point as it is in the heart of Tamal.

This hotel is in a fantastic location. It's pricey compared to others but the history, tour desk, service and location make this a great place to stay.

Great location for shopping. Great history. A range of room rates. However, our room had a broken toilet seat, no remote, and we needed to request blankets.

Convenient location in great surroundings

I was tucked away in a single room on second floor, which would have been fine except there were no lifts and I have a hip injury. Otherwise it was a really convenient location close to tourist sites and the markets and restaurants. Also the grounds and garden are lovely and the breakfast amazing
