Staying in a cave room but having an entryway in the room with windows out on the gorgeous Matera scenery is perfect. We also had a porch with chairs to sit outside. The breakfast was amazing! Fresh and delicious food served to us by the most welcoming people you could ask for, Angela and Agnese. We also had a wonderful piano player, Gianni, at breakfast every day - now that's a first for us!. If we went back to Matera, which we hope to do some day, we would stay here again. The only negative is WiFi is not reliable in our room. Unfortunately across all of southern Italy our 5g T-mobile plan didn't work either so we used physical maps. We stayed a week and so were able to see a lot of this magnificent area. Most people only stay two or three nights and I feel that is not enough.

Our stay at Corte San Pietro in Matera was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warmth and care. The hotel itself is stunning — carved into the ancient stones of Matera, yet designed with incredible comfort and attention to detail. Every corner felt authentic, peaceful, and full of history, while still offering modern luxury. Breakfast was fresh and delicious, and the staff went above and beyond to make us feel at home.
We were also fortunate to meet Fernando, the owner, whose passion and hospitality made our stay even more special. His love for Matera and for the unique spirit of Corte San Pietro truly shines through.
Finally, we want to highlight our wonderful chauffeur, Pasquale, who drove us from Matera to Positano. He was professional, kind, and extremely knowledgeable about the region. The drive was long, but he made it safe, comfortable, and even enjoyable with his friendly personality and great conversation.

Absolutely wonderful experience. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel is made up of several cave-houses, which gives you a very unique experience.
Our room was very spacious, with a sitting area separate from the bedroom. Another sitting area outside your door on the courtyard is a great place to enjoy a night-cap.
Matera has to be seen at night to be appreciated, and the Corte San Pietro hotel is right in the middle of it, providing an excellent experience.

The location and the hotel itself was excellent, truly a unique experience. However, even it paled next to the service, which was simply the best we have ever received. It was in a sassi and I only missed my boyfriend, as I was solo traveling here. Centrally located and I found some great spots close by for cocktails and dinner. I’ll definitely return one day with someone special.
And there is a fabulous spa advertising in the room!! OMG- just do it.

I HIGHLY recommend this hotel and visiting Matera in general. The staff spoke great English, were onsite and were very friendly and personable. We were welcomed with a personal sign outside our door as well. It was walkable to everything you needed. The breakfast included was AMAZING (piano player in the background, sit down white table cloth, table service and plenty of food options). You could explore the hotel and all of the cisterns. The room was clean, quiet and comfortable. If I could rate this 1000/10 I would.

A unique cave room stay in central Matera location
Matera… what a place!! It’s a wow on every corner and Corte San Pietro was the same. Our superior room was one of the original cave dwellings, updated for a comfortable stay. The only windows were in the door to the room, which opened straight onto the street, but we didn’t mind that at all. Not having a door on the bathroom (just a curtain) was a surprise… but only added to the uniqueness of the stay.
Breakfast was delicious and served to live piano music in a room above the hotel’s old underground cisterns (which made an interesting post-breakfast visit).
All the staff were superb, really trying their best to meet every guest’s needs. Sadly they missed our (2) requests for a missing bath towel to be replaced but no one can be perfect.
Finally the hotel’s recommended parking was perfect. Easy to find well sized and secured and a l transfer service can be arranged by the hotel. Just remember that this is all additional cost though.. €20 per night for the parking and €30 return for the transfer.

Lovely hotel. Authentic sassi lodgings, immaculately renovated and we even had a beautiful view of Matera and the Murgia (and Festa della Bruna fireworks) from our private terrace. Fresh water and fruit every morning, and breakfast was delicious (definitely check out the ancient cistern system underneath, entrance from the breakfast room). It was my birthday one of the days and the hotel was so lovely to treat us to a bottle of spumante and some taralli and snacks. What a lovely gesture! Great staff and service.

Corte San Pietro is right in the heart of the Sassi. although you must park outside of Sassi, the hotel communicates with you about parking & recommends a lot ihat you can park in & have a driver pick you up to bring you to the hotel. Once at the hotal everything is within walking distance, with shops, restaurants & historical sights near by. I would highly recommmend this hotel!

Matera is an amazing town and Corte San Pietro is equally an amazing place to stay. Staying the cave rooms is a unique experience, unlike anything we have stayed in before. When I saw this hotel had 10/10 from many other reviews I thought this is the place to be. The location of the hotel is fantastic and our room was a good size with a view of the internal courtyard. However, from our experience the hotel was lacking in service, internal communication with staff and a set breakfast that was the same each day and it was disappointing.

Every detail is spot on at this property. Anna and Giuseppe are awesome and available for any need, question, or concern. From the moment you make your reservation they are available to ensure your stay is perfect. The owner is usually walking around and is also available. We were having a glass of wine and he walked by and noticed I was a little chilly. He brought me a soft shawl to wear. Breakfast is great. Our friends were leaving before breakfast for an early flight so they put a breakfast box in their room the night before for them to take. You will truly enjoy your time here. This was the last leg of our trip and I could not imagine a better ending to our great trip.

Fabulous hotel. Staff was very helpful. Felt like a very open aired boutique hotel. Fernando, the owner I believe, was beyond gracious and super informative regarding the property and the hotel.
