Right in the heart of the historical city of Matera you will find Cavoso Hotel. We stayed in one of the cave rooms which was much more airy and larger than I expected. The room had everything we needed for a very pleasant stay. The hotel gives you a choice of breakfast in your room or the dining area. We tried both and enjoyed the variety. The view from the hotel is simply stunning with an incredible view of one of the famous stone churches on the hill. All the staff at Hotel Caveoso were helpful and had wonderful tips for dining and touring options. Everything we wanted to see in Matera was within walking distance from the hotel. Overall a wonderful stay.

We made the wrong decision how to get to the property as the instructions about “no steps” is confusing in the English translation. The bed is extremely firm, but I personally liked it, while it was too hard for my wife. Staff who checked us in deserves five stars! Pleasant, efficient, professional, and gave an awesome recommendation for dinner! When leaving, an event was happening in the city with many streets closed in pouring rain. It made it extremely difficult to get back to our car. We had to drag our bags uphill to the parking garage. Kind of soured our experience with this property.

Great quiet location back a street from action. Lovely little hotel, very friendly helpful staff. If you are arriving by car get the hotel to prebook parking with Damascus parking. The shuttle to the hotel is worth every penny.
We stayed in room 3. My only complaint would be regarding the bath. It is tired and needs to be refreshed. There is a mold issue around the tub that needs to be addressed. Also the silver on the mirror has worn off in places.

Aside from the hotel being very nice and comfortable and in a great location, unfortunately we experienced an emergency medical situation that drastically hindered my mobility. They quickly relocated us to a ground floor room as I could not traverse the stairs to our original 2nd floor room, mgmt helped my wife with the luggage while is was in ER and arranged cab service for us from hospital, to pharmacy and back to hotel. They went above and beyond in all regards. A special thanks to Denise who made things much easier for my wife while I was receiving treatment. If in Matera again I will definitely look to book.

Hotel.com did not disclose that parking is 10 minute ride away, that it costs up to Euro55. Also not disclosed that there were 30 uneven, steep steps to get to our room and there is no assistance with the luggage. The parking info came one day before arrival on an email from the hotel - at a point where cancellation was not possible.
On the positive side, the included breakfast was great.

Wonderful room in a cave. Simple, but beautiful, and made you feel part of the history. Location was right off the main strip near the Santa Maria Church. Breakfast was varied and good. Many restaurants to choose from. Staff was attentive and helpful. Price was a bit high, but worth it. Nice stay.

Enjoyed our one night stay in the cave hotel. Fun experience with our family to spend night in a cave hotel. Ideal location for seeing sights of the old city and step away from amazing views and many options for restaurants. Breakfast was good. Parking is a bit far (still a manageable walk with our luggage); however the area is a no driving zone, which they notify you in booking.

All advertising is of cave rooms which we were totally disappointed when shown to a pretty basic room with rubbish air on. Manager was extremely helpful and luckily we got a cave room for the 2nd night. Double check what you’ve booked, standard is not a cave

Location was the best feature. Our room’s AC couldn’t keep the room cooled so we had to ask for a fan. TheAC was dripping water where we had to dam with towels to keep water from flooding the floor. Toiletries were not replaced and breakfast choices was minimal. We had a balcony which was South facing which we couldn’t use since an umbrella wasn’t available. Our kids stayed at Hotel S’ant Giorgio and it had a lot more charm with dug out cool cellar, lots of food, meat/fruit basket for far less than we paid for in the Caveoso. Will not recommend! We didn’t point out these inconveniences because it should be obvious-soaked towels on the floor, asking for a little more cheese and or coffee?

Hôtel Caveoso is in a very convenient location to stay for seeing the sites, right in the middle of the historic area of Matera. Near the cave houses and the church of Santa Maria de Idris as well as a host of cafes, restaurants and small shops. It is not an easy trek up to the hotel as the roads leading up to it are cobble stone (especially when you’re hauling up luggage and carry ons) and cars are not allowed to drive in to the city centre. There are parking lots outside of the area that you can leave your car that range from 10 euros/day to 25 euros/day (also hourly rates). Then a 10 minute walk is required to get to the hotel. You can either walk it or take a bus. Contact the property with regards to questions about the parking. They are very thorough with providing the information you need for your stay there. Very friendly, accommodating and helpful staff. Very nice breakfast included with your stay. You order it the night before and they bring it in fresh each day. Great coffee, croissant/matera bread/focaccia, cheese, cold cuts, yogurt, cereal, fresh seasonal fruit. Beds are comfortable, good water pressure in the shower. Free WIFI on site and rooms. The town is beautiful and the people are super friendly. You feel very safe.
One thing to note is that it is a historic building excavated in the rock. So don’t be surprised to feel a dusting of sand on the furniture, floors and bedding. Not a deal breaker though. Would definitely stay again.

The property is located in the historic centre. Really beautiful built into the caves. If you have luggage, it is a bit of a walk up a few stairs and cobblestone streets so I would recommend taking a backpack or ordering an ape to transport from the parking centre. The room gets humid solely because of the cave structure but the AC system is fantastic! You need to order breakfast a day in advance and there is no option for early check in. The hotel is located next to some amazing restaurants and viewpoints. The staff were really friendly and helpful!

The deluxe grotto suite was beautiful, spacious and clean. I misunderstood the description thinking there were two beds rather than the actual bed for two people. The staff brought in another comfortable twin bed to solve the issue. The location was perfect- so close to many options for dining and shopping, as well as the bus stop for getting to the off site parking. Breakfast was very good and was made available earlier than usual to accommodate our early departure. I highly recommend this property for anyone visiting Matera!

We were treated well and provided with good information about Matera. However if you have a car parking is tricky or expensive. For hassle free service where they take the car and park and return it . It 20 euro's a night so we only stayed one night.

Pretty nice place - but could be improved

This hotel is pretty newly renovated, so it's clean and in good condition, but we felt there were a few things that made it less than it could have been. The biggest is that they do not turn on the air conditioning evidently until the end of June. This is much too late - the weather was in the mid to high 80s in early June, and this is particularly important because some rooms (like ours) do not have good ventilation, and the building bakes in the sun all day long. Our only window opened up on the entry courtyard, where people were talking and smoking until late, so we couldn't open the window. It was quite hot at night. Also, the room only had those very cheap little plastic glasses which crush when you pick them up, which made me feel like I was in a cheap motel. Regarding the service, the young lady who worked during the afternoons was fantastic - personable, helpful, charming, but the grump who worked in the morning should be a receptionist at a trash collection site for all the charm and assistance that he offered. He was not helpful in the least. This place has good bones, and is in a good location, but honestly, if these things didn't change, I'd look for another place the next time I came to Matera.

We stayed for four nights and found the hotel perfect. Room number two was huge and had a great view of the Sassi. Centrally located for exploring. The continental breakfast was good and constantly being replenished. Very friendly staff. Wi fi was a bit hit and miss but you are on holiday so not a problem.

The cave rooms were excellent (we had 2) . A couple of tweaks would have helped - room 5 the shower fitting didn't work so taking a shower was a balancing act and the fans in both bathrooms were really loud. However the rooms were atmospheric, the staff were very helpful and welcoming, the breakfasts were tasty and the location couldn't have been better. A great stay overall.

Hotel address is in a pedestrian area, however, with a bit of understanding of the 2 access roads, the hotel can almost be reached by car. For \"first time\" visitors, however, location is very difficult to find. Hotel could have provided basic directions in advance to ease arrival. Local area is very nice and absolutely worth visiting. Room was very, very simple. Bathroom desperately needed a paint job. Front desk staff not particularly friendly and communicative. The use of the English language appeared a significant challenge.

Had to drag our suitcases up stairs along heavily cobbled laneways up a steep hill, not advised of this. Hotel manager very unhelpful and quite rude. Our room was very basic. The curtains on the only window/door were not big enough, people walked right past our room so we had to close the shutters for our privacy. Nice view from this room when we could open the window. Facilities in the room were terrible, bed uncomfortable. After 2 nights we had enough and checked out.

The location is great! Convinient car parking service for small fee. We booked the junior suite. The cave room was spacious opened to a large terrace with a nice bathroom and AC. The breakfast was good. All the staffs are very friendly with amazing service.

Our room was very damp and had a strong smell of some kind of air freshener. The dampness made the sheets on the bed uncomfortable. The air conditioner worked sporadically. The location was good. No mention was made that we had to carry our bags up a cobble stone hill to get to the room. There was no porter or help available. Also the parking situation is unworkable. We had to pay a porter 20 Euros to take our car to a parking area over a kilometer away from the hotel. I would not recommend the hotel to anyone over 50 years of age due to the difficulty getting the bags to and from the room. The staff was friendly and helpful but the novelty of the hotel in the cave was not what we expected.

Location - poor.
Needle in a haystack and residents only street parking for 15-20 mins radius. Nearest car park (50 cents per hour - even over night) is 12 mins walk away with lots of steps to climb.
Hotel is near old town but a trek to get to the lively centre. Couldn't find any supermarket in town.

Girl at reception on arrival was fine she gave us the basic information. But don't assume water in fridge is complimentary. After waiting 10 mins for old man at reception to finish his phone call I asked about the bottles. He barked back \"small bottle 1€ large 2€\". We left them only to be questioned at checkout if we took them and then the chambermaid was sent straight into our room to check. So we left feeling like they thought we were liars.
Breakfast - poor.
For 100€ a night we expected a hot option. Just standard flavoured croissant and biscuits, no milk for cereal only yogurt. Ants crawling around the ham/salami/cheese section.
Room - disappointing
The reception is built out from cave walls so looks nice but room we stayed in is a manmade barrel ceiling, so - fake cave. We could have been in any hotel anywhere. The air conditioning was old so very hard to control also. There seemed to be a big deal made about the Sky box in the room, which might be good if you speak Italian but no English channels - not even sky news. Bed was fine, shower fine.
Overall we wished we had saved some money and stayed nearer the centre or closer to where we could park.

We chose this hotel for two reasons. The location and the parking that was advertised. First, THERE IS NO ON SITE PARKING AT THIS HOTEL. You can drive over a mile to the nearest parking garage and walk back to the hotel, or you can pay \"20 euro\" to have someone come pick it up, but we were mysteriously charged 25 euro upon pick up even though we were there less than a full 24 hour time period. Next, the hotel rooms pictured in the advertisement show beautiful views of the old town. We were given a room on the ground floor with no view, no air conditioning (broken), and a 3 inch mattress that caved in when you sat on it. While the location was great and the breakfast service was nice, we would stay somewhere else if we ever came back.

Stunning location

Great views and right at the centre of the town in the heritage area. Good restaurants and little shops nearby, very handy for the walk down into the gorge, and visiting the main rock church, opposite. Matera is stunning, a very special landscape which has to be seen up close to be appreciated, photographs really don't do it justice. It's the 2019 European City of Culture, visit soon before everyone else gets to hear about it, mostly Italian visitors when we were there.

Excellent location in Sasso Caveoso with great views from our room. Good breakfast with fresh fruit. Pleasant courtyard in which to enjoy a drink.

Interesting hotel in the middle of Sassi di Matera

The hotel is in Sasso Caveoso, with very interesting surroundings. It is not possible to park a car nearby but in the booking the hotel room was advertised with a free parking

Beautiful setting but disorganised staff

Fantastic setting, large rooms and great views from balconies.
But the staff on reception struggled with check in process - seemed very disorganised. The female staff are much more capable and breakfast was very pleasant, friendly and accommodating staff on hand. Parking isn't free. We were advised to park about ten minutes walk away, for 50c an hour. I asked why the website states 'free parking' but this isn't the case.

A bit difficult to find but beautiful location and lovely room. The mention of 'free parking' is misleading - this actually costs 0.5 euro an hour and is about ten minutes walk away. Breakfast was good and balcony very pretty.

Hotel Experience

We stayed in room 3 and after viewing the photo's on all the websites were disappointed. However, the hotel is in a fantastic location (when you eventually find it) and we enjoyed our stay. We felt a little local information in the room would have been useful and clearer instructions on booking as how to reach the hotel. Also the staff could have been more considerate as we were woken at 3.00am by a member of staff talking extremely loudly on his mobile phone outside our door !

Nice but...

A group of friends staying for a two-day visit to Matera. Our room was lovely but the description 'with balcony' was inaccurate being a small seating area off the public footpath - no view as one might expect. The room itself was set into the caves and perfect for the ambience of the town. Other rooms allocated to the group were less entrancing. Breakfast was excellent with a good range of choice of usual Italian fare and some international options. Most staff very welcoming and helpful. Finding the location and then parking was a major issue. Car parks are in the new town some distance away and no solution offered other than 'take a taxi'. We were told that laws had just changed and there had not been chance to make any provision.

However, for a stay right in the heart of Matera, it was ideal.

Unusual hotel as you stay in a cave!

Great hotel which is convenient to everything once you find it if driving. Everything is in easy walking distance. Rooms are crazily good dug out from caves finished off extremely well.

We did not spend much time in the hotel. The room was comfortable and a good powerful shower but a bit tired.

Amazing Experience

A cave hotel in a city built into the rocks - what an amazing place to stay at. We did not quite get the room we thought we had booked - but it was still fantastic and actually consisted of two interconnecting rooms and was extremely spacious. Despite the aircon it felt quite warm and humid at night - hence only the four-star rating above - but I suppose that is to be expected in that kind of space. The staff were friendly and helpful, and it was just a few steps to a number of restaurants. Overall, thumbs up.

Great hotel in the heart of Sassi district

spent 4 nights in this hotel and thoroughly enjoyed it. Staff were welcoming and breakfast was good.(hot tea would be better!!). Plenty of good restaurants around the area and wonderful views nearby. There were plenty seating areas around the hotel and also water in the fridge for our use. This was a great place to stay.

Hidden gem of a village

We loved it here. Highlight of our trip through Italy. Matera is a fabulous place and in a few years time accomodation will be difficult to get. Take my advice go now while you can. Our room was not in a cave as requested but it was still ok. The breakfast room was. It's not about the room in this village it's about the village.It is truly spectacular.
