The property is really beautiful and authentic with cave stay . It was an unforgettable experience for us on our anniversary day - they provided us with local wine, and special arrangement in the room with a fruit basket . We absolutely loved everything about the property like rooms with candles, sharing history about the hotel, the location is very central, restaurant in a cave setup was so stunning . We loved the cocktails, light bits there and not to forget a lavish breakfast spread was amazing !!

Sextantino was fantastic. Staff and services were incredible. Entire staff was amazing , very polite, accommodating and going extra mile to make our stay as pleasant as possible. We had 3 rooms and each was so cozy with great futures ( cave shower was my favorite). And I have no words to describe our special private dinner , that was delicious and the most amazing dining experience. Thank you everyone who mad our trip so special. We definitely be back.

Matera is truly a unique spot that you must visit and Sextantio is the place you need to stay at.
We had high expectations for our stay at Sextantio. The pictures of Hotel on the website promised a truly unique and luxurious experience.
They did not disappoint.
The caves are rustic, memorable yet luxurious with ample toiletries and comforts available. The location is incredibly ideal to navigate by foot bus or car..
The breakfast were some of the best I ever had in my life. Lorenzo made us feel part of the family and was incredibly friendly and accommodating.

An incredible experience!

We had trouble finding the parking garage! One phone call and Jennifer got us there step by step. Very helpful to say the least.

We were given a warm greeting upon arrival. The staff were all friendly and pleasant to talk with.

Our room was very clean and inviting. There were beautiful candles lit in the bedroom and bathroom. A table was set up with fresh fruit and a pitcher of water. Elegant napkins and tableware were provided.

The most incredible, unique experience

We stayed in Le Grotte della Civita #8 It was incredible! It truly is a cultural, restoration project. The caves are cozy, well lit, candles, soaking tub (I miss). Their afternoon Aperitivo is lovely. The breakfast is phenomenal. The staff goes above & beyond to assist you. Definitely recommend parking at their recommended parking area (they will come & collect you & your luggage). Thank you Sara, Paolo, Brunella Emilia, Pasquale. They will assist you with tours, actives as well

A special experience!

This is an INCREDIBLE hotel...from the initial communication, arranging our ground transportation, being met by Jennifer and given a history of Matera to the stunningly beautiful cave we slept in, this was a perfect place. The breakfast was beautiful and delicious. The setting of Matera is stunning. My only regret is that we only had one night there. I am already trying to plan a return trip.

I wish that I could give 10 stars to Sextantio! The property is stunning, the town is wonderful, the views are breathtaking, and the staff is incredible. If you are visiting Italy, Matera is a must. This property deserves a big thumbs up. Cave rooms were very well designed with a lot of attention to detail (lights, candles, custom shower gels). Breakfast was one of the best I had recently with a lot of local cheese and fruits instead of banal buffet items. Ricotta was simply amazing. Staff was polite and helpful. I would definitely stay again. The only recommendation I would give is that since each room is unique I would put each room and its images separately instead of room category.

It is a very special hotel. Very unique you will never stay in such a place with so much history and so well kept. If you’re a bit of a claustrophobic, I would suggest you to take a Palazzo room rather than a cave room.

The experience of living in a cave was unique and one of a kind (only downside being no bathroom door in the room while staying with kids). It is in the prime location, with amazing views right outside your front door!

Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita is one of the best hotels I've ever had the pleasure of staying in, truly unique
& memorable!

The location was perfect for me, on the outer edge of the Sassi with a beautiful view of the Parco della Murgia Materana. Yet a 5 minute hike to the other side of the hill will have you in the heart of Matera. The room was very clean, furnished with rustic original furniture. When lit with the ample candles provided, one can get a very small sense of how people once lived in the Sassi.

The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet was the best I've ever had in a hotel, stocked with delicious local foods and serviced by a kitchen which provided cooked-to-order eggs and amazing cappucino.

The Sextantio Group philosophy of the \"Albergo Diffuso\" is enlightening and admirable. Their goal is to provide unique travel experiences while preserving cultural and historical heritage, and the result for the guests is an unforgettable experience.

Matera is amazing. This hotel is by far one of the best curated hotels in the world. Sextantio revitalization efforts embody the spirit of the ancient world of cave dwellers combined with the rich culture and hospitality the region values. From the minute you arrive the standard of care is excellent. The location is perfect to explore. Get a local guide or take a cooking class. The views are priceless. The modern elements of design built into the candle lit caves are quite extraordinary. Breakfast service is exceptional, the focaccia is some of the best in the world. What can I say about this hotel? All I can say is that I had a once-in-a-lifetime-experience. It was unreal and it cannot be explained how it was. You have to stay to experience.
We were lucky to be upgraded to suite and it was just sooooo amazing to stay in that suite.
Facility was just amazing and you cannot find any better staff than those guys at the facility I met.
I will recommend this place to anyone who will go to Matera. And Matera was unreal, also.

From the valet service on the way in to welcome refreshments, local friendly & knowledgeable staff, amazing local cuisine for breakfast and our parting is such sweet sorrow departure this experience was magical and stunning. The property is immaculately cared for and staff will attend to your every need. The restored grounds and cave rooms are amazing and hands down one of the best sleeps of our 3 week voyage. The surrounding area is walkable and the views/ setting amazing. they offer a private dining experience and in room massage which we did not utilize. We would not hesitate to go back just for that.
Matera has just been awarded European Capital of Culture for 2019 and for good reason. This was easily one of the more unique, magical and true local experiences we had.
We could not recommend this hotel more. Don't hesitate to book.
If you are a focaccia bread fan their focaccia for breakfast could be hands down the best I've had in the world. Local meats and cheeses amazing as well.

This is our second trip. Sextantio is fantastic.
Everything about it is done well, tastefully, and respects it’s surroundings. Fabulous. Even the grapes hanging outside our sassi(cave) smelled intoxicating.
The view immediately outside of La Murgia is immense and thought provoking.
They upgraded us to an executive suite from a superior - thank you for being so thoughtful.

The reception staff was fabulous -- kind, welcoming, very informative about the history of Matera and the hotel, and helpful with recommendations. We loved our room, and didn't want to leave it -- it was so beautiful, comfortable, and restful, with a warm soak and candlight. The hotel was attentive to every detail -- even the shampoo was so special that I bought a bottle! Breakfast was delicious.

Nothing to dislike! Unique part was that the cave was a renovation of antiquity. Remarkable story, authenticity of the experience, the hard work to not alter the environment yet make it comfortable - even plush - for modern visitors. Staff were exceptional, some from the area who could give first-hand experience describing the recent history. Access to excellent restaurants, natural park across the chasm. Matera itself is a charm, this hotel a perfect introduction to its evolution into a destination worth the detour.

Great hotel, unique, great staff ( specialty Aman and Cristina ).
However, areas for development: bed was not very confortable and neither were the pillows. A suggestion to consider would be a softer bed and two pillow choices.

We were so priveledged to be upgraded to
an amazing suite....I didn't want to leave..
So beautiful and comfortable... candle lit...but also electric sockets for chargers etc...
The adaptation has been done both tastefully and sympathetically..
The whole experience was absolutely fabulous..
The evening drinks and breakfast are served in a very large cave ... which has a very interesting history... breakfast is a banquet..
Can't recommend it enough...
Only one point to make... probably not suitable if youeould find climbing natural uneven, can be slippery, stone stairs.....
Sensible footwear recommended...

Caves very atmospheric. Staff fantastic, extremely helpful. Gorgeous views. Despite heat caves remain cool, only dimly lit with lamps and candles. Beds very comfortable. We had 3 caves. One had bath in room plus a shower, the other two had a bath or shower. Breakfast included which was nice though not a lot of choice.
You will struggle if not very mobile due to steps between levels and uneven cave floors.

We arrived at night...very late and very tired but were insanely blown away by the hotels beauty,
Given a mini tour by the night porter then shown to our room,
Amazing!!
Can't say anything bad about the place it's truly beautiful....if you don't mind steps and a bit of walking book here!!

The only disadvantage is the missus wasn't to happy about the mirrors as there's only small ones (you know what lasses are like)
But me a grown man loved the place and would definitely go back

Do not make a booking with them

An error was made with the date of my booking and although this was explained to them (by myself and Expedia) they have refused to alter my booking and consequently I lost all of my money. They wanted me to pay again (with a small discount!) This is terrible customer service and I have told everyone not to book / stay here.

Where do I start? I have too many amazing things to say about this 'hotel'
We arrived around 10pm and were given a tour and told the history of the caves and this hotel they must've been waiting for us to arrive but we were not rushed at all! Given a free upgrade to our room which was just phenomenal! So cosy and warm and everything so intimately designed to keep the cave 'genuine' it was so beautiful we could've stayed in the cave all weekend and not gone outside!
Breakfast was lovely and all local produce but you can request eggs etc if you want - we didn't. The coffee was to die for!!
The staff went out of their way to help you and were so genuine and friendly! We asked for a map and woo it asking the lady highlighted places of interest and what times they were open til so we wouldn't miss out.
I could go on forever about this amazing place!!!

Unique and beautiful stay in a series of cave rooms, allowing us to fully experience Matera, Italy. Every single staff person was top-notch -- helpful and pleasant and knowledgeable. Fabulous breakfast. Only downside was the cost for parking, but it was worth it to conveniently get rid of the car in Matera, which is tough for driving and parking. I would highly recommend Sextantio and HOPE I will be able to visit again!

Wonderful and totally different experence

We saw the hotel on Alex Polizzi's tour of Italy TV programme and wanted to stay. The hotel is exactly as described n that the rooms are actually caves. We had no windows, cobble stone floors, very few lights and lots of candles. We had a bath and no shower. This I believe is consistent for the majority of the rooms and is part of the appeal in that the hotel keeps its original feel. It is an enchanting and fantastic place to stay for one evening but if you want a plush room with all mod cons then this is not for you. The service of the staff was fantastic as was the breakfast.

Very interesting hotel and an amazing experience. Great location and very friendly staff. Wonderful breakfast of all fresh and locally produced items. Great selection as well. We agreed it could benefit from an outdoor space or terrace/lounge to have a place for guests to sit and mingle overlooking the beautiful view. It could also be improved if there was a turn-down service, just someone to provide fresh towels and re-light the candles in the evening. Otherwise, great experience and would recommend it to other travelers.

STAY HERE......UNBELIEVABLE EXPERIENCE,

IT IS WORTH GOING TO MATERA TO STAY AT THIS HOTEL! Unbelievable! We loved it! Breakfast was fantastic.... You are sleeping in a cave....how much better can it get! Very convenient to everything. Also.....there are a couple of really unique dining experiences in MATERA that the hotel can book for you.......and it would be worth emailing them ahead of time for information. We tried to book the day of, but we're too late.

An amazing experience

My wife and I stayed at this beautiful hotel for two nights in early July. Firstly, it’s really hard to actually find despite having a sat nav. You have to really keep your eyes peeled for the hotel sign. On a good note the hotel will send you directions and pictures before you arrive, be sure to print these off and take them with you as they do help. Upon arrival we were greeted by lovely and friendly staff who gave us a tour of the hotel and explained the history of the caves and that they have tried to keep everything within the hotel original. This includes lifting up the original floor stones, numbering them, installing under floor heating and putting the floor stones back in place. Most furniture is original and recycled also. There are nine cave rooms in total and all I can say is wow. Our room had a bath and a shower, a very comfortable double bed, free water and fruit and was draped in wonderful candle light. The room although dark as it only had one small window (as you would expect being a cave) was amazing and fully equipped with everything you need such as wifi. However, do not expect a TV or full length mirror. Believe it or not you will be so blown away with the beauty of this cave you won’t miss these things. Everywhere you look in this hotel there are signs of the past and a uniqueness that you can’t help falling in love with. I dare you not to lay in bed and look around you in awe. The breakfast buffet was also very good.

5 star cave experience

If you are looking for a 5* experience with a difference then this hotel is the obvious choice. The cave rooms/suites are wonderful and overlook the Murgia valley which is dotted with cave churches. Lesser kestrels and other raptors overhead add to the surreal experience that is Matera.
A holiday experience not to be missed.

Wow! Loved it!

What an amazing place! It is absolutely fabulous and the scenery is breathtaking. I would recommend this hotel and its location to everyone. The cave rooms are so lovely, lots of candles and a sunken bath, it felt a very magical
Place to stay. Would love to return one day.

The caves are great and this hotel is definitely worth staying if you are visiting Matera!

The reception staff were very helpful and overall this was a great experience.
