Perfectly located with stunning views

Perfect location if you are driving. You can park out of the ZLT and walk 5-10min to the hotel without having to go up and down the hill. The views from my room were unreal and the receptionist Vivian was super nice with her recommendations

If you’re looking to stay in the heart of the Historic Center, this is your place. Be prepared to walk over rocky roads and go up and down the road stairs, which is not bad if you want to exercise a little bit while vacationing. Room was a little too small for my taste but very clean and comfortable. View from my room window was incredible! Hotel doesn’t offer parking (paid or free). You need to find a paid parking spot on the nearby streets (around $10 Euros for 10 hours). Breakfast was good.

You couldn't ask for a better view from the hotel. Staying in a cave was pretty unique but the humidity led to a mildew smell and the sheets felt wet. The staff were not friendly but did their job’s perfunctory. More information about where to park would be very helpful as there is none nearby since the hotel is in a restricted driving area.

Interesting experience

Interesting to stay in one of the \"cave\" rooms. It's a bit of a trek to reach on foot (only option) but worth it. Our room was cramped because if the configuration but had good view from two small windows and external terrace. Hearty breakfast. Helpful staff. Not great value for money. You pay for the experience.

This place is awesome. Our room had a small balcony overlooking the city that was incredible. Yes, the room is small but considering your in a building that is hundreds and hundreds of years old, maybe thousand of years, who cares! You have a window overlooking the 3rd oldest city in the world! Yes, it is about a15 minute walk from the parking garage to the hotel but you have to walk everywhere in Matera anyway, and once you make a turn close to the hotel and see the city for the first time , it will be all worth it. Suggest packing a couple of backpacks with everything need like we did. Would advise against trying to wheel large suitcases over the uneven pavement and stairs.

Lovely setting would definitely recommend. You need to be able to walk as property not accessible via car. Our room needed refreshing with a lick of paint but otherwise really enjoyed our stay.

Someone at the front desk didn’t take the appropriate documentation so at 12:00 midnight, after we were asleep the front desk woke us up and we had to go to the lobby with our passports. It was scary and disturbing to my.

Great view. Heart of the Sassi

Dog friendly hotel near main piazza. Great view of the church and Sassi. Large breakfast selection. Street parking, I was able to find a free spot near the police station.

The location was very good, in the midst of sassi. However the receptionist did not give us the room which we booked which was a cave room instead gave us a normal room, it was only when we asked she gave us a lame reason that it was through some random order and finally gave us the semicave room. Which was still a twin bed and not a double bed which we booked for. We felt like she was trying cheat us and save the good room for others. The room did not feel clean either. On the other hand the breakfast was excellent.

When my wife and I arrived after finding the hotel with great difficulty (it's located in the Sassi which involves many slippery steps and numerous small alleys and turnings - and not one sign for the hotel on the way). The female receptionist seemed angry that I had booked a triple room and there were only two of us (it was the only one available when I booked). That is when she got off the phone long enough to check us in. As noted in the title of this review the bed was like lumpy and so were the pillows. The room (#302) was dark (it's partially a cave but that's no reason not to have adequate lighting). There was one small window above the sleeping loft. The double bed on the main floor was placed over a large cistern covered with glass - not the most secure place for pleasant dreams.

FABULOUs location and spot to visit

If you have heavy suitcases or have any mobility handicaps-don't even think of staying in this location unless you are Atlas. I highly recommend going to this spot. It is exceptional and very authentic and in keeping with the history of the area. DO NOT miss this incredible - unique place. It is so special. Don't come hungry to the breakfast table. Poor selection. Have a coffee and fruit and move on. The ferrel cats in the area awoke us fighting several times during the night. Wear hiking or athletic shoes the entire time. People were so friendly and we ate dinner at a divine seafood restaurant not far from the hotel (in one of the caves). ENJOY!!

Magical Stay

My stay was brief, but magical. I've had knee surgery which encumbers me when carrying luggage. The hotel provided someone to hoist my bag and carry it to the piazza above to meet my taxi. The hotel is lovely. Breakfast is ample. The views are wonderful.

Great location in the heart of the Sasso with a fantastic outlook opposit the cathedral. Short distance down to Sasso Main Street or up to the square and \"la passegiatta\" main drag.
You can drive down into the Sasso on via fiorentini to quickly drop off or pick up bags

Great town. A bit disappointing hotel

Was disappointed with the \"suite\". Balcony was down the stairs and down the hall. The neighborhood makes up for everything though. It was very clean although worn. Staff was fine. Must say, the number of stairs required to reach the hotel makes this a difficult location for anyone who is not in physically fair condition or anyone who has anything more than a backpack to carry. Whew!

Can't get any closer to the Sassi

We loved this hotel. Room was spacious, large enough for 4. We loved that it was part of the Sassi, the caves that were originally built into the side of the mountain. The only drawback was the walk up to the reception, and no elevator, so luggage had to be lifted up the steps. But, I would stay here again, even if it was a little inconvenient at first, because of the ambience and the opportunity to stay in buildings that were unchanged for so many years. There were a few good restaurants and stores right in the area. Once we got there, there was no reason to drive anywhere. A great experience!

Be careful about room location when you book

We had reserved two rooms for three nights, and we had looked online at the hotel website, including at the photos. Unfortunately, our rooms looked nothing like the photos, were quite far from the hotel reception and breakfast room -- involving a steep climb down the precipitous stone paths -- and the room was filthy with sandstone dust. As a result, we cut short our stay and departed after two nights. In fairness, it's possible that had we been assigned different rooms, we might have had a more positive experience. In addition, we arrived in Matera by car, without good directions about reaching the hotel, which is in the sassi, and parking. When I called the hotel upon arrival in the city, the clerk I spoke to tried to explain how to find the parking garage, then gave up and told us to ask someone on the street. Fortunately, a very helpful stranger guided us to both the parking garage and then to the hotel. Matera is worth visiting; be careful, however, if you decide to stay in the sassi area, as we did.

A rock-cut hotel in the famous Sassi

This was our first visit to Matera, arriving by hire-car for two days with deliberately light luggage. The hotel forms part of the extraordinary Sassi (= rocks) part of the town, where there is no vehicular access and the streets mostly take the form of stone steps up and down winding paths on one hillside or another. Some physical fitness is needed. The hotel had provided us with the name and address of a private garage, which was fine (and the custodian very welcoming), but it was quite hard to find on a first visit. The town has few helpful road signs. The walk up to the hotel was also not easy, with a bit of a climb from one of the main squares, and then a winding descent. It is easy to get lost. The hotel staff were helpful and very welcoming, and they led us down more winding stone paths to our room, which was a large, high-ceiling, rock-cut cavern. It had a good bed, a sofa, a second raised seating-area, a small bathroom, also carved out of the rock, rustic furniture, a good chest of drawers, telephone and TV. The room had air-conditioning, which we found impossible to adjust. The room was therefore cool and, being a cave, rather damp. This was OK for our visit in high summer, but could well be inadequate in winter or even spring and autumn. Breakfast was good without being outstanding, served up at the main hotel building. We would recommend the hotel to friends, but only those of physical robustness, and with appropriate warnings.

It's right in the middle of the sassi. I took taxi from the bus station, cost 15eur. Nice view from the room. Very helpful staff who can speak English. Breakfast was good, too!

Historical and beautiful, but not comfortable

Matera is a must-see! Our room at this hotel had a beautiful view on to the ancient city, but the room interior was very humid and uncomfortable. We would not choose to stay in this room again. The cleaning staff was very nice, and accommodated our cat. However, the front-desk hosts were not friendly... For those with much luggage or disabilities, know that there are many steps.

Truly a unique experience

The hotel was as advertised. We enjoyed our stay in the authentic cave hotel. It had a nice breakfast room and a very good breakfast and great espresso and cappuccino. The hotel staff was very friendly and attentive. We had trouble finding the hotel , when we called them for directions, someone from the hotel came to meet us, walked us to the hotel , and took care of our luggage. After check in someone accompanied us back to the car to accompany us to an indoor parking garage. (additional daily fee for indoor parking)

Great Stay at the Sassi

A very unique hotel in a very unique location. We would highly recommend it to friends. Matera is a very special place in Italy and if staying it is a must to stay in the Sassi and Sassi Hotel is a great choice.

Not easy to find and many steps to navigate to get to breakfast, or reception but it is located in a very historicial area so that makes it understandable.

a very unique experience

the matera sassi are a sort of dream city of great beauty. this hotel is right in it. travel lightly as you have to climb twisting stone stairways to get here but definitely worth the hassle. the single rooms are really tiny and i wouldnt advise them if you are tall or portly. they do have drop dead views from window and are steps from the hotel terrace with panoramic vistas. spent second night in a huge jr suite carved out of a cave with soaring ceilings and a combo of typical furnishings of cave dwellers and plastic pop art furniture, liked the big plastic rocker. great buffet breakfast you can eat on terrace or in a cave dining room. a stay here will be very memorable.

Location is very good for exploring this exceptional city. Staff was very helpful, whether to recommend restaurants or explain how to get out of town on bikes. Just two things to consider -- Each room is a separate cave opening to the outside, but sound still carries. If you're sensitive to nighttime noise, you might ask for a room at the quiet end. And there's no \"drive-up\" access to the hotel, so you're hauling luggage, bikes, and whatever else up or down a long series of outdoor stairs. But that's also part of the charm of the city.

Interesting rock cave hotel

We enjoyed a lot our stay at this full of character hotel in the heart of the old stone town of Matera.The views from the veranda of our room was awesome. Each room is different so you can choose.
Very helpful staff provided a lot of info on the area and the surroundings.
Breakfast is not so various but tasty.
Good free internet connection.

We were glad the hotel had an arrangement for parking in a garage, but we were disappointed with the charging arrangements.
When we left the car at the garage we were told it would be €10 a day, but on collecting the car were told it was €15 a day because it was a large car - a little underhand we thought.

For a memorable night or weekend, this is an exceptional place to stay. Close to the town centre and with breathtaking views over Matera, it's well worth a visit.
The room was clean, spacious and very stylish. We only suffered from the air conditioning which didn't seem to work and cool the whole room, while it was extremely hot during our stay.
The staff were very welcoming and helpful. The person pointed out places to see and walk around Matera with very valuable local insights and for which we are grateful.

Arrivare all'ingresso della reception e trovarsi davanti il Sasso Barisano che fa di Matera uno dei patrimoni dell'umanità basterebbe solamente questo per rendere questo soggiorno indimenticabile. Ma se poi alloggi in un albergo diffuso con la camera ricavata dal restauro degli antichi sassi rende questa esperienza indimenticabile.

ロケーションもホテルもとても良かったです！男性スタッフは皆親切でした。受付の女性スタッフは、数分前に伝えたことを忘れているので、しっかり確認した方がいいと思います。注意点としては、ホテルまで多くの階段を上り下りしなくてはならないので、大きなスーツケースはお勧めしません。どうしても荷物が多い場合は、スタッフの方に運んでもらう交渉をしたほうがいいと思います。

La ubicación del hotel es más q fantástica, con unas vista extraordinarias. Lo único q no nos gustó fue encontrarnos bastantes pelos dentro de la cama pienso q hay q tener mucho cuidado con eso daba la sensación que no habían cambiado las sábanas, me decepcionó por lo demás es un hotel perfecto para recorrer matera , el desayuno estaba bien.

Hotellet er bygget ind i hulerne og det giver et interessant sted med nogle udfordringer på komforten. De opvejes dog rigeligt af stedets autencitet og beliggenhed i den gamle by med udsigt over byen og til domkirken.
Morgenmaden var god og lokalet er en oplevelse. Igen en kæmpe hule.
Da vi var i Matera i april var der så mange mennesker i byen at det ikke lykkedes at få et bord på en restaurant. Alt var forudbestilt. Vi fandt nogle panini i en lokal bod og de var fine nok. Kommer vi tilbage vil vi sørge for bordbestilling

噂通り、ホテルの部屋から見える景色は最高です！
ガタガタ道で一人でスーツケースを持ってホテルまで行くのがとても大変でした。
どこから入ってきたのか部屋にムカデみたいなのがいて、怖かった。
部屋は古いですが丁寧に掃除されています。
朝食もイタリアの他のホテルと比べて、良いと思います！

It seemed that the staff didn't have any time for the guests. We didn't feel very welcome to be honest. Everything was very formal and we missed the friendliness we have seen in other places we stayed in Italy. We were happy to stay here only one night. It looked like they had enough business and didn't want to spend time to give guests the best experience in Matera

洞窟ホテルで入浴。

浴室はベッドが置いてある部屋よりも階段5段くらい降りた所にあり、とても広いバスルームで大きな浴槽、キレイなタイルで本当に気持ち良かった。暖房がよく効いていて寒いと感じることもなくとても快適に過ごせた。何より目の前のサッシの光景は素晴らしく感動的だった。

Super Hotel plein de charme, au confort un peu spartiate, mais remarquablement situé. Par contre, totalement inaccessible en voiture, il faut faire environ 500 m à pied, en portant ses valises à travers des pavés disjoints et beaucoup de marches. Personnel délicieux, vue magnifique sur la ville de MATERA.Tous les lieux touristiques sont à moins de 500 mètres.Chambres propres, Wi Fi gratuite, petit déjeuner somptueux et très local délicieux.

Buon hotel nei sassi di Matera senza troppo allontanarsi dal centro, ottima posizione.
Colazione ottima e varia con pizza tipica di più gusti. Abbiamo avuto occasione di visionare 4 tipologie di camere standard e solo un tipo ha il bagno piccolo. Impagabili le camere con vista sui sassi.

Bella posizione tra i Sassi

I punti di forza di questo hotel sono:
- posizione ideale per visitare i Sassi,
- la possibilità di lasciare la macchina in un garage convenzionato,
- personale abbastanza cortese,
- camere pulite (noi abbiamo dormito in una camera ricavata in un sasso e quindi ovviamente era un po' buia ma calda).

Punti di debolezza:
- a colazione la scelta non è molto varia (c'è dolce e salato, molte focacce, ma poca scelta di frutta),
- i cuscini sono macchiati (per fortuna le federe sono pulite),
- abbiamo mandato un'e-mail per avere informazioni e non hanno risposto.

部屋は清潔で、部屋やバルコニーからの景色は最高です。また、朝食にはピザがあり、イタリアらしさが感じられました。
ロケーションは最高ですが、駅からスーツケースを持っての移動はなかなか厳しいです。ローマ通りからヴェネト広場、サンジョバンニ広場までは問題ないですが、サンロッコ通りに入ってからが問題です。
石畳ではありますが、角の取れていない石のため、転がして移動することはできません。

Sulle tracce del passato

L'Hotel si trova nel rione Sasso Barisano, in ottima posizione come panoramica, ma raggiungibile solo a piedi (particolare da tenere presente, se si viaggia con tanti bagagli).
E' un albergo diffuso ed offre diversi tipi di sistemazione, fra cui camere ricavate dalle caratteristiche grotte di Matera (spendendo qualcosina in più, rispetto alle standard). Il soggiorno nelle case-grotte - completamente scavate nella roccia - come comfort , sono eccellenti.

Grazioso Albergo.

Abbiamo dormito in una stanza in grotta molto suggestiva. Spaziosa e pulita. Unica pecca è posizione ma è ovvio trovandosi tra i sassi. Noi con la moto abbiamo parcheggiato in piaz e a piedi abbiamo raggiunto con le valigie la nostra stanza.
