Well worth a visit

Not a full hotel. Almost self catering but lovely fully refreshed fridge and breakfast every day. We had a lovely private terrace.

This property was amazing! We had a large room that was very comfortable with a fabulous bath. Check in was easy and every staff member encountered was kind and knowledgeable. The snacks provided in the room were a welcomed convenience. The location was excellent and we had so much fun exploring Matera every day. I would definitely stay at this property again.

We stayed in one of the cave rooms- clean, quiet. A good selection of food for breakfast choices in our room- topped up daily. A fascinating old quaint town. I did the walk to one of the caves across the valley which was hard work but interesting. Lots of good restaurants nearby . Recommend this Hotel.

Everything was excellent! Breakfast items were already in our room and the refrigerator was stocked! The only issue one might have is getting your luggage to and from your room. We were lucky enough to have Luigi help us with our luggage because it wasn’t too busy. If you have to do it yourself, lots of rocky steps. You can’t roll your bags, you have to lift it. Luigi was extremely helpful along with the other staff!! Highly recommend this hotel!

Great Sassi stay

The host at reception gave us a brief tour and explained the city to us. Our room was stocked so we could simply have breakfast there. Also the Lucany restaurant beside our place was amazing. Highly recommend

Matera is a very special place. It is difficult to find another city in the world with a landscape like this. Staying in the Sassi, the old cave houses, is something you really should do to enjoy the full experience.

I stayed at San Giorgio Hotel, and it was exactly what I hoped for. It was a special experience, something I will always remember. I really recommend it to anyone who wants to try this kind of stay.

The staff were very friendly, the atmosphere felt real and traditional, and the room was big and comfortable. Everything made me feel like I was living a dream.

The Sassi in Matera is one of the most beautiful and surprising places I've ever been to.

To stay in a hotel like San Giorgio is a unique and amazing experience, which is hard to describe: you sleep in a cave (which, against all expectation, is super confortable), have an amazing breakfast in the room, and walk around at any moment (sunrise or sunset), allowing yourself to get lost and to discover the city once and again.

I can't recommend the experience enough.

Parking is a bit of a challenge, be sure to correspond with the hotel prior to arrival, the office and check in is located in the Sassi and parking is by permit only. Otherwise highly recommended!!’

The architectural features of this ample suite for three or four was tastefully furnished, the kitchen was well equipped, the set up for breakfast was a welcome amenity, and the view of Matera from outside the suite was amazing. The proximity of the intriguing and ancient space just outside the kitchen window, where olive oil is currently stored, was a feature that makes this suite in the Sassi all the more unique. I'd return to San Giorgio to stay any time.

Perhaps I expected something more cavelike. A large space with a dated looking kitchenette in contrast with a lovely bathroom. Suggest better bedding to fluff things up. It’s a room in an awesome location.

People watching and comfort in a sublime setting

Oh my word: this place is amazing! We were traveling in Italy and decided to change our destination to Matera because it was the only place we could get to conveniently where it wasn't cold and rainy. We had no idea how beautiful the city would be, and how this hotel residence would just make the trip for us. It has a balcony with a table and two chairs--perfect for taking in the scenery with your sweetheart and having a meal or glass of coffee or wine. The bed was comfortable and there was even a kitchen. We decided to cook dinner and stay in because we wanted to sit on the balcony until dark. It's a restored building in the Sassi and it's absolutely beautiful. My only suggestion would be for the hosts to stock us with salt and pepper, since they thought of everything else. This is a place not to miss!

A most perfect stay at Hotel Residence San Giorgio

This perfectly situated and sympathetically renovated self-contained studio apartment in Sasso Barisano is both beautiful and comfortable and provides all the amenities and comfort a guest would need. Breakfast was ample. Check in with English speaking staff was swift and friendly with maps and advice on good restaurants given. Contact was made unprompted prior to arrival with information on parking facilities and directions. It snowed heavily and taxi arrangement was offered, again unprompted. Matera was stunning under the snow and the stay at this wonderful hotel and its thoughtful staff made everything perfect. I would not hesitate to stay at Hotel San Giorgio again should I come back to Matera.

Worth the extra money

This place was AMAZING. The location is fabulous, and so is the town itself. The room is part of a restored residence, so it is in a rock cave, which is fascinating, beautiful, and interesting. The room was spacious, the breakfast was great, the bed was comfortable, and the shower was large with strong water flow. The only draw backs are parking, which is likely a problem everywhere. There was a 15 euros fee for valet parking, which is less than we've had to pay at downtown hotels in the US. You also had to drag your luggage uphill for about 120 meters, so if you pack light, it is better. For us, we had two large suitcases so it was harder. The host did drag one of the suitcases for us.

Spacious self contained appartment but in a hotel bed and breakfast environment. Ideal for 2 persons but catered for 4 persons with sofa bed in large lounge with balcony. Excellent couple who own and run it all with great communication and easy, efficient parking service and hotel access.

Great location in Matera with a choice of restaurants and bars along the street and well placed for exploring the sites of the town. Our room was spotlessly clean with a large choice of items for breakfast in your room so no need to fit in with hotel breakfast serving times. Amazing! Wonderful rooms created from newly renovated cave houses, situated right in the heart of the beautiful Sassi. The host was the one who did much of the restoration, which involved not only the rooms, but also a medieval church adjacent to the rooms. He showed us around the church, a truly magical experience. I can’t recommend this place highly enough!

The hotel is in Sassi and very close to many sights you will be interested in seeing. The main room is large and comfortable. The bedroom is in the loft above the main room. While the room is built like a cave it has all the conveniences and comfort of a good quality hotel room with adequate ventilation, air conditioning, amenities.

Great hotel in historic section of city

Matera is a beautiful, old city, unique in having the sassi, where the inhabitants used to - and still do - live. The hotels' rooms are in converted sassi, and though very upscale and comfortable, they still retain the flavor of being in a cave. The city is wonderful to explore - many churches, shops, restaurants, museums, and narrow winding streets.

A night in a Sassi! Too Much Fun!

Our stay at Hotel San Giorgio was a unique and fun experience! The hotel lobby and the rooms (at least ours) are both in the Sassi area but not in the same spot. You check in and they walk you to your room. When you get to your room you find a beautifully appointed, immaculate room in a \"cave\"! The room was right in the heart of the historic area and you can walk everywhere in this incredible, interesting and gorgeous city.
Alexandra, the owner was so very friendly, helpful and accommodating. She actually rode with us to find a parking place (there are basically no cars allowed in the historic area.) and then drove us and our luggage back to the hotel.
If I had the time I would stay a month at the fabulous and unique hotel!

beautiful spot in the heart of the old town

We had our own living room and bedroom space in a gorgeous cave house with its own small kitchen, backing onto a tiny courtyard which made us feel part of the old town not just visitors. The room was spacious, the decor a chic mixture of traditional and modern with high ceiling and rock or brick walls. The bed was very spacious and the room had a lovely bathroom and all amenities. The staff were very helpful and even took us on a personal tour of the archeological site that belonged to the hotel. The location was right in the heart of the old town down at the botttom of the valley with many traditional local restaurants nearby and easy access to all the sites. You could walk the hotel to anywhere in Matera easily. Not a good location for those who don't like steps however, we loved it.

We found the town to be enchanting. It was as if we were visiting the past and expiring something that we never thought we could. We loved every moment of our visit. Matera is not for someone with bad knees or a weak heart. Lots of walking and climbing steps. We're so glad we visited before the arthritis sets in.

truly unique...it's an experience, not a room

The Hotel (sometimes called Residenza) San Giorgio is one of many hotels set into the rocks or sassi of Matera. Its office is on a lower level and you climb (there is very little that is horizontal in Matera) a somewhat steep cobble stone stairway to get to your suite. Our suite was like a one bedroom apartment. It had a kitchen, bathroom, living room, loft bedroom and a couple of corners perfectly engineered into the rock. Oh...did I forget to mention?...It also have a centuries old Cistertian Church in the floor below to which we had access. The church was so large, a real labyrinth, that we did not venture to its full extent for fear of getting lost. Parking was a bit of an issue. Set you GPS to the office or to the neighboring restaurant, La Talpa, and they will park your car for you. (They'll get if for you too. This service cost 35 euros for two days.) Given Matera, if you are reading this in English, you really don't want to be driving in the sassi. Breakfast is self-serve and the hotel will provide you with some basics like cereal, toasts, crackers, fruits, instant coffee, etc. To get to the Piazza Sedile, a main square that connects to most historical buildings, you climb up the stairs following the Itinerari turistico signs. There's a restaurant before the Piazza called the Cola Cola that has an excellent dinner menu that is translated into English and does not change. For 15 euro you get to drink good local wine and have a very finely prepared dinner.

The Heart of the Sassi

A wonderful experience staying in an original sassi. The room (cave) was so unique and very comfortable. We had use of a small kitchenette and the bathroom had the most amazing shower.

Lovely apartment with great location in Matera

Our apartment was in a lovely old building and had a large living room with separate medium bedroom, kitchenette and (the only downside) a small bathroom - plus a balcony with a good view. The furnishings and decoration were tasteful and the people very helpful. Highly recommended, as is Matera itself.

Unique Stay in a Cave...

Fantastic location and surrounding.
Unique rooms, unique ambiente, unique surroundings.
When you found the reception (and a parking lot nearby), do not take your luggage with you straight away, as you most likely will be re-directed to one of the various rooms they have and this might be a pretty steep walk, so you might think about preparing a day-bag only, in case you only intend to stay overnight.

The San Giorgio was a great place to stay and exceeded our expectations. The apartment is one of the classic living quarters that Matera is famous for, it has been tastefully decorated and modernised with all the amenities necessary. Alessandra welcomed us warmly and was extremely helpful with local information and suggestions in making the most of our time in Matera. She took us to the apartment (which was in the heart of the old area also known as the \"Sassi\", which was perfect as it meant we were right beside all the historical points). She methodically went through all the usual hotel information in a clear and consciencious manner. I would recommend this hotel and Matera as a great place to visit, whether for a relaxing few days or to visit a myriad of interesting cultural/historical sites.

It was a fun little place and a completely unique experience. You truly are staying in a cave. It was wonderfully remodelled with a nice bathroom and lots of space. Be warned though, because you are sleeping in a cave it WILL be very humid. They had a dehumidifier set up in the room before we got there and it still felt like we were sleeping on a leaking water bed. That isn't their fault but rather just an observation of the nature of sleeping in a cave.

O espaço do chuveiro para tomar banho é minúsculo. A forma como é oferecido o café da manhã é horrível. Disponibilizam alguns itens no quarto (muito pão e torrada e pouco queijo e presunto e nada de ovos) e você deve preparar o café, esquentar o leite no fogão. Não é prático e deixa muito a desejar. Não voltarei a ter essa experiência.

Das Hotel besteht aus mehreren verteilten Zimmern direkt in den Sassi - eine richtig authentische Unterkunft für Matera und eine lohnenswerte Erfahrung! Der Zugang zu den einzelnen Suiten erfolgt über Treppen und Wegen durch die Sassi - leichtes Gepäck ist daher sehr zu empfehlen. Wir wurden darüber im Vorfeld von den Gastgebern informiert und konnten so umpacken, dass wir nur einen leichten Koffer für die zwei Nächte mitnehmen mussten.
Zum Parken erhielten wir ebenfalls eine kurze Information auf Anfrage an das Hotel - wir entschieden uns für eine Parkgarage (25 Euro pro Nacht), da wir unser gesamtes restliches Gepäck im Auto ließen, es gäbe aber auch eine günstigere Variante mit Shuttle.
Das Frühstück wird im Hotel San Giorgio so gelöst, dass man in der kleinen Küche der Suite alles Nötige bereitgestellt hat - es wurde uns sogar erklärt, wie man Mokka mit der Mokkakanne kocht - zubereiten musste man das Frühstück dann selbst nach Lust und Laune. Großes Plus: zu jeder Suite gehört ein Tisch im Freien - so kann man da gemütlich den Kaffee trinken oder auch ein mitgebrachtes Essen verzehren.
Alle Sehenswürdigkeiten sind in wenigen Minuten erreicht.
Tolle Lage, tolles Personal, eine wirklich tolle Erfahrung mit besonderer Atmosphäre!
