So be aware, YOU ARE PROBABLY NOT SLEEPING IN THE BEAUTIFUL MANSION. There is long ugly gray motel in the back, where the rooms actually are. Our host was lovely on check in & I kinda feel bad for this tepid review but as our friend said \"this place has all the charm of a upscale Motel 6\". Our room was clean & ok for a nights sleep though & the price was right for us.
Room 24's bed had the DREADED \"constantly roll into the middle of the mattress\" SWALE in it, our friends said, so maybe they could replace that.
The motel connects to the mansion & your are kindly told you can come, \"check it out at night & in the morning there is continental breakfast & coffee\" here. I actually wish they opened the beautiful bar on the weekend so we could have sat there & had a drink instead of going back to the Motel 6.
Anyway, it was fine, but not exactly what we expected.

No usual & customary check in-Envelope put on front door for check in. Unfortunately, we were in the way back of mansion in a double bed room no microwave or refrigerator.
However, Tyler the inn keeper was fabulous. Took my daughter on an under ground tour of the museum, laboratory & telescope.
Interesting history on the Hartness House.
We would stay again, picking a room in the main mansion.

The house is beautiful!!! Unfortunately, I stayed in one of the rooms in the back (which was a bit dated, but clean).
Staff was very friendly and accommodating.
I would definitely stay here again, but I will make sure to stay in a room inside the house.

AC unit was hidden behind curtain, so would have slept better if we had air movement and soothing white noise. Room had odd features, no ceiling fan. Bathroom didn’t have space/counter around sink area. Strange wall shelving around tv that wound not work. Over priced for a mediocre stay.

I visit Springfield at least once a year, this is my second stay at the hartness house, I’ve stayed in the mansion and in the hotel, I have been very happy with both options. The mansion is stunning and enjoying a coffee and pastry in the mansion in the morning is lovely. I’m glad to see this historic building being taken care of so thoughtfully.

The place was very clean and well kept, but we felt like we had the entire Inn to ourselves. We heard coughing from another room, but it felt very empty.

We saw a staff member only in the morning and they were great! Very friendly, very helpful and took us on a tour of the tunnels and told us the history of it all.

What was disappointing is the lack of a restaurant/ bar which was a big highlight when we stayed here years ago. When we came here years ago, it felt lively with what seemed like locals coming for dinner and hanging out and guests enjoying the their time. This time around, aside from the morning we were there with the staff member, the whole experience felt hands off. We even joked that it felt like the \"Ghosts\" were running the business.

Would we return, yes. But as the staff member said, we were in the slowest time of the year, the in between seasons. So, next time, for us, perhaps a busier time and maybe after they open the restaurant/bar for good food and good times.

We were given a room in the very back of the facility by a passcode given to unlock the back door ourselves, and the facility seemed to be a cheaply constructed addition to the original mansion and the whole place seemed to be quite empty. We were already disappointed at the condition of the poor room, we realized that the room also reeked with cigarette smell which gave us bad headache. No staff was to be found in the building to assist us, and after calling a number, a staff person was reached after some time, and came to the property, gave us a different room which was in the mid-section and much cleaner compared to the first disastrous room offered to us.

The cleanness (or the lack of it) was very disappointing for the first room we were given and I hate to imagine if we got there later in the evening and no one could come to fix the problem we had.

The main lobby interior was very charming as shown in the pictures, but there was no air conditioner running so it was stuffy and not pleasant to stay there either.

Check in was a little confusing as we didn’t have the code to enter, however an envelope was left for us at the main entrance. We were in the motel section which was clean and quiet, however not all amenities were present. Arrived around 7:30pm, but disappointed that the bar was to be closing soon. Beautiful house, nice self serve breakfast amenities however again disappointed not to see anyone present to talk to or ask about the details of the house. Perhaps it was because it was a Monday evening/Tuesday morning, but felt like we missed out on more of an engaging experience. Almost seemed like an empty house.

Finding it was a problem. Goggle maps sent me in circles. The mansion itself was lovely but the hotel attached to the back was hardly better than a youth hostel. The room and linens were clean but parking was just bare ground and broken curb stones too rough to wheel luggage over. Most of the time my room had no internet connection. Most of the time there was no staff available on site. There was no ice. The bar was closed by 8 on Saturday night; maybe it was never open. It was comfortable but much too expensive for what it was. The manager was nice.

Staying in a clean hotel/rental is top priority for me and my family. Our room (35) in the back rooms of the Hartness house was impeccably clean. Pay attention to your booking, there are many rooms not in the original house where we stayed and I would highly recommend. You still have access to the charming main house, with its rich history, and if you’re lucky, a tour down underneath the house to check out James Hartness’s private quarters, telescope and small museum honoring him and many inventors from his time. Breakfast was just what we needed before heading to Okemo to ski, only a 25 minute drive. The small town of Springfield is very charming as well, with food options and remnants of an industrial era. The Hartness House is definitely worth a stay

I was looking for an overnight stay after skiing with my adult children and visiting family nearby. We were limited because of only needing a one night stay when Hartness House popped up on the internet. Was a sweet surprise because this place was a gem. I was getting in late so the area was dark but then we pulled up to the mansion being well lit with beautiful string lights. They give you a door code to the front door and to your room so no assistance was needed at the late hour. The inside was wonderful with its old world phones, victrola, grand staircase and all the comfy seating areas on the first floor. The next morning we woke to coffee and scones in the living space and sat in the window seats. Upon reading about the Hartness history and the tunnels underneath we were able to get an unexpected tour of the tunnels, office and lab underneath. The history was really something. The woman was very informative and knew all the facts about the space under the mansion and the family and took a lot of pride telling us about it.

Check in was confusing. I had received emails with conflicting instructions. Tried to register using a kiosk just inside the door then finally gave up. Was able to access our room anyway.
The TV system was complicated but was able to watch a rerun of a tv program. Too difficult for seniors who are not very tech savvy.
Breakfast selection was dissapointing.

Very nice facility. Rooms are pretty basic. No amenities like a coffee maker or refrigerator or anything other than a couple of plastic cups. Coffee station in Main Hotel is quite a distance from the rooms in the back section. Also no cable, but smart TV for streaming was nice.

There was no staff on site. The place seemed deserted. An envelope greeted us with directions, very basic and very expensive for what we got. Chain lock on the door broken. My wife said if she was alone, she would not have stayed here. One other car in the lot of an establishment with 43 rooms. Very weird experience. Perfect setting for aStephen King novel.

Staff is extremely friendly, I would suggest staying in the more modern wings if you’re picky about hotel rooms. They continue to offer tours at convince of guests. Would come back!

This was an unexpected highlight during our trip to New England. I booked it due to convenience but it ended up being an attraction. We received a tour of the Mansion and history of it's original owner and the area. I wish we had the time to stay over another night or two.

Overall, I would rate this property as excellent at the price point. We stayed in the addition on the back for a very good price on a peak skiing weekend (President's Day). Our room with two double beds was very spacious and bright, and was exceptionally clean. The bathroom was spotless with newer tub and fixtures, and excellent water pressure. It seemed like the other guests were mostly skiers; a very nice, family-friendly group. Parts of the facility could benefit from renewed furniture or carpeting, but it seems like the owners/team at the Inn are working with what they have to make it as nice as they can in a small town, tourism-driven operation.

Having left the paper with the front and back door code in our room, there was no way to get in or get a hold of someone after 8 pm. Left messages and online emails and to date, never received a response. Being a Springfield native and staying here multiple times over the years, I've come to the point where I will no longer stay here.

I was looking for a place for the night in VT while on a kayaking trip and picked this one because it seemed like this quaint colonial inn. It seems like it's seen much better days -- there were very few guests, and I got a call at about 7:30pm saying that the staff left for the day at 8 and my key would be in an envelope tacked by the door. When I arrived that was the case, but all doors were locked and all lights off in the main house; it seemed almost deserted. I expect the main house is different, but I was in a room in the back wing, which was veeeeeery basic -- more hostel-with-private-bath than hotel -- and the whole building smelled like water damage.

The Hartness House was amazing !!! Wonderful

and Historic, and kept that way on the inside too. There were a few small things I brought to the Managers attention. The website listed a Fitness center, A restaurant, and DVD player in the room. The restaurant had closed in May. (but working on getting something up and running soon.) Fitness center was closed for good, but, they will give passes to Fitness center next door.(they just did not offer me one?) and after picking out movies to watch, and staff left for the night, we had no DVD player in the room. Overall, the Inn was impressive !!!
