I couldn’t see the pool.
We did not like the payment method for using the guests washing machine. You had to sign up for an app , then load cash onto to the and hope it would operate and still have money on the app after using the machines.
But They were a excellent pair of washer and dryer.

We love The Empress Hotel and stay there every time we visit La Jolla. The rooms are spotless and the the breakfast room is delightful and the food is adequate for a free breakfast. Centrally located, with an extremely helpful staff, this is our home away from home!

Overall the room and reception staff was good. The major set back was the breakfast. The lady managing the breakfast was very rude to all of the guests and literally slammed the door on the face when it was 9.30. Also she was not refilling milk and other items though there was 10 to 15 mins left. Being in the hospitality industry this kind of service and behavior was appauling. Suggestion is to remove the breakfast service is such sub par and rude service is provided.

Great location. Nice desk staff. Problems with manager and even when I asked 3 times no one came to make up the bed. Someone finally came to do it while we were in the room. So awkward. Also they wanted to overcharge me for the pets.
Good size room and super location 2 blocks from beach and in the center of everything. Good breakfast.

The service was not good at all! The general manager was not respectful and really had a hard time supporting us as a family with children. This hotel is really more for kid free travel. Also we had some issues with the room that were never resolved. Breakfast was good. Location was good if you want a chill, near the beach experience. Hotel restaurant was upscale, and not great for kids.

Great pet friendly hotel. The staff is always welcoming. The only drawback, we arrived an hour before check-in and they had plenty of rooms available but due to a policy had to charge us $15 for the extra hour. Paid, but I'd prefer not to given we stay frequently when we have our dog. Other than that, great stay with the Empress!

No ocean view from our room, it was only on the 2nd floor and faced north. Breakfast was good and fresh. Room was clean. Bathroom could use a bit more privacy, as the door has slats. Parking is a problem, as you should get the QR code before you arrive and park in the structure across the street before checking in. TV has a sensor for the remote that can easily fall behind the dresser during cleaning, thus making the TV inoperable until you relocate the sensor. Location is great for the surrounding area and the price was decent considering we only stayed for a single Saturday night.

It was okay

Drink options and menu was fine. They were pet friendly. Parking was pricey at a public garage across the street.
They transferred us due to maintenance in the first room. The staff interrupted as they forgot to refill the soaps. The second room blanket smelt horrible. The lady in the breakfast / terrace area was rude. Going to think twice before I stay here again.

The entire place was nice. Kind of pricey, but its close to the beach and its a very nice tourist spot. The lobby has snacks and treats, which is very nice. The room was nice and the bed was comfortable. My issue is with the less than helpful (at least to us) staff on duty for the night shift. We were informed at the desk that there is a 25 dollar a night charge for parking. Parking is across the street in a building that you have to download a code for to get in and out. The person at the front was more interested in socializing with some guy. We were apparently an inconvenience. (we checked in at 7ish pm). I did let the person know my experience and she said she would make sure someone knew about it. The parking situation is less than fantastic but the rest of the stay was great. We did not get to try the on site restaurant but it was certainly hopping and people sounded like they were having a blast. I got a pretty decent discount on the room using this site, but I can't imagine paying regular price, so if I decided to come back, I will be using Expedia again.

Nice hotel, good location - only a short walk to the ocean front. Breakfast buffet was good. I would give a 4 or 5 except for the poor parking arrangement. It is very difficult to get the parking booked through the hotel. We had to try multiple credit cards before it worked and a lot of time was wasted. Then when we wanted to leave on a Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m., we could not enter the parking structure. The key card would not work, and both entrances were locked. So we decided to try the driveway and thankfully, the gate was not closed. Although pedestrians are not supposed to walk in the road way, it was the only way to get to the car.

Hotel was overall nice but I do have two big bites so I’m wondering if they have bed bugs. The soap was SO SCENTED that it irritated my skin and that is my main complaint otherwise it was nice. As long as they didn’t give me bed bugs I’m alright. Will update my review if I got bed bugs.

Swim trip to La Jolla

Solo traveler. In town for the annual La Jolla Cove open water swim races. The Empress is about 10 minutes walk to the cove but significantly less expensive then the hotels next the cove. The place is nice and well kept. The only thing that wasn't above average was the breakfast as it was so so.

Nice stay. The parking garage and expense was a hassle.

I arrived early and was greeted with an early checkin fee so my wife and I decided to wait before checking in to save $30. I felt like it was going to the add on expenses that you get in Las Vegas resorts.

Nice place, but could do with some repairs. The place where breakfast was served was a bit run down. Breakfast was similar to many hotels, had expected something nicer.
Also, didn’t like that had to pay extra for parking.

We have always had a positive experience for several years at Empress Hotel, for some reason, they got rid of the valet. Not user friendly!
Also, yes, we left around 12:00 noon on Saturday, however, no room cleaning service by the time we returned around 6:00 PM.

Upon arrival, the front desk staff were friendly and very helpful, assisting us with securing our two-day parking pass for our stay. The location of this hotel is prime, and we easily walked to everything. Our room was very quiet, and the bed was comfortable. Dining was both excellent and convenient: daily hot breakfast included and a top-rated restaurant for dinner inside the hotel. I would definitely recommend staying at the Empress Hotel when visiting La Jolla and we plan to stay here again.

The Empress is wonderfully located, an easy walk to La Jolla Cove with restaurants, convenience stores, and shops all around. That part was excellent.

Breakfast covered the basics reliably: scrambled eggs, sausages, bread, coffee. Nothing fancy, but consistent. My only gripe was the juice selection: overly sweet mixes and no simple orange juice.

Where the stay stumbled was room maintenance. Our bathroom door lock did not work at check-in, and engineering had to fix it. The toilet’s flush leaked and later failed on our last day. The in-room safe would not open because the batteries ran low while our documents were inside. The iron left a black stain on my shorts the first time I used it, which suggests it was not cleaned after a previous guest. None of these alone would be a deal-breaker, but together they added up.

The hotel was within walking distance of the famous and popular Prospect Street. The location is excellent, and the room on the top floor has a nice view. Very comfortable and clean. Breakfast was ok, not my favorite, but there are many choices in downtown with a La Jolla vibe.
They offered beach umbrellas and chairs upon request for use at the beach. The staff was very friendly and professional. Although the hotel does not have its parking, parking is available across the street for $25, which is complimentary for hotel guests. We only stayed one night and I recommend it.

This hotel was great- except the price. I thought it was expensive, but was the most affordable option i could find for the area. The room was very spacious and the king bed- very soft and comfortable. The pillow were nice too- felt like real down feather pillows.
