The Hotel is a beautiful building. It's architecture alone is a sight to behold, and it's location too is perfect. We received a very warm welcome from the helpful lady at reception.
It was great to see that the bar was open when we arrived just after 4pm. We had driven for hours and needed a break. All the bar staff are friendly and very accommodating. The bar area has great views of the surrounding countryside. We felt relaxed. A table was reserved for us for supper, one by the windows so we could take in the vista.
Dinner menu is not overly complicated and reasonably priced.
The only negative was within our room ( room 14). It was cold and we had to request that the heating be turned on. The windows were letting cold air into the room. We understand that the windows are the originals and need to be in keeping with the building; however some secondary glazing would be ideal. That would also drown out the sound of the busy road below. All night one can hear traffic, especially the lorries which seem to go on all night. We did not sleep too well despite the bed being super comfy and fresh linen.
Check the toilet in the room. It was leaking during the night.
Perhaps ensure there is some heating in the morning too as it was a chilly day and we struggled to take a shower in a cold bathroom.
The breakfast room is lovely, and set up well. The chap who served us was really helpful and friendly.
All the staff there are lovely and do a fantastic job.

I loved this place. It looks like they are doing it up. Some of the areas need work, like reception etc BUT our room was lovely. Very clean. Beautiful bathroom. The bar area was really nice and there was a new deck at the back which catches the sun and an amazing large deck / balcony at the front with amazing views of Launceston. The food was delicious and the staff lovely. Would definitely stay again.

Certain members of staff stood out from the others and made our stay more enjoyable.
There were a couple of issues with lighting in the room but it didn't spoil our stay.A special mention for Becka , she was on breakfast duty every morning of our stay her welcoming smile and conversation was infectious.

Comfortable, friendly hotel

A very comfortable hotel and the customer service was excellent. The only problem that we had was the very poor water pressure in our room and the noisy refilling of the water tanks. It's an old grade 2 listed building and perhaps could do with a coat of paint in some areas. However, the friendly staff more than make up for this.

The welcome email received regarding timings etc is a little confusing and misleading. Room had damp in the corner of the room; 15. Had to open the window all night to help with the smell lingering in the room. Wasn’t able to order food on arrival at 9pm even thought it stated 10pm and no customers in the dining area / bar. Very quiet.

Very good!!

We had a great time. The staff and owners were lovely. The patio at the back of the hotel was great with amazing views. There was a little traffic noise but it didn’t spoil our stay. Great food. We would definitely recommend staying here.

We booked a classic double room after looking at the website photos. We were allocated room 7, in the roof space that is accessed by several flights of stairs. Two sides of the room have sloping ceilings with exposed roof timbers. The toilet is located under the eaves behind the circular window seen at the front of the building. Despite warning notices, we frequently hit our heads and on one occasion, my wife hit her head so hard that she suffered a severe headache.

Ours was a short stay and as we had a busy schedule, we avoided the upheaval of moving to another room. Whilst not an expert, I am surprised that building regulations allow such a room to be used as accommodation. In my view, the room is unsafe for visitors unfamiliar with the layout, its exposed eaves and roof timbers. Perhaps not surprisingly, it does not feature in any website photos.

On a general level, reception is only open for limited periods of the day. The building is very tired and in need of redecoration. Paintwork on the window in room 7 is peeled back to bare wood in places. There are no lampshades on the wall lights; the toothbrush glass is missing; the light over the sink does not work.

Despite the decor being tired, our room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and breakfast was good. We enjoyed a first-rate afternoon tea watching the Grand National. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and we would call out Teri who showed great dedication. Oh, and the gin flavours were fantastic.

Some years ago after a few days in Cairo to visit the pyramids etc., we went on to Alexandria and stayed in a hotel, with all its spender that probably dated back to the old empire days. Entering the room we had at The Eagle House Hotel, although smaller and not as grand, was a reminder of our stay in Alexandria.

There was also a bar at the Eagle, that does very good meals in the evenings to save having to go out again to find somewhere to eat. The bar also had real ale. Very good breakfast in the morning

There is also a Castle, literally just up the road, to visit.

Needs massive improvement. Images of the building are misleading as very run down at the front. The downstairs rooms back onto a busy road and extremely noisy as the windows are not double glazed. Pillows were flat and very old. No blackout curtains. Breakfast was just awful. However the staff were really nice and helpful. They do have a lovely terrace.

Room was really cold when I arrived at 4pm and I was told heating is on a timer and will come on shortly. It did heat up fairly quickly probably because the room was about 2 square metres.

The property is a beautiful house.
It has its own gin distillery. Our food was fabulous and staff helpful and friendly. Our room was beautiful and furnished to reflect the 16th century property. Beautiful views.bathroom unique. Will hopefully return in the summer.

This is a grade 2* listed building which the owners have invested massively in so there is still work to do. We had a lovely stay, magnificent Christmas tree filled 2 stories in the hall! Our room was huge so there was room for a dressing table/ chest of drawers and another chair but we were happy. A shower over the bath would have been preferable but we were OK. So glad this fabulous building has been protected, we know how hard it is to care for listed buildings.

Fantastic!

The hotel was full of history, a castle overlooked and it had wonderful views. The bar and restaurant was great with friendly staff. The fish and chips is quite possibly the best I have ever tasted (worth the stay for that!). The on-site brewed gin was tasty and overall was great. I will stay again.

The hotel looks beautiful from the outside but the rooms are tired and the bathroom too small. Strangely, I asked to borrow an iron and ironing board and was advised that irons weren't allowed in the room because of safety so we had to take our clothes to a ground floor room to iron them. The restaurant was nice and the food was very good.

Spent 3 nights here. The staff were friendly & helpful. There is a lovely terrace with beautiful views just off the bar. The bar area has a lovely modern feel and has the huge Gin Still (called Bob) that is used to produce the Eagle One Gin…..my favourite of their own Gins was the summer blend, although they were all very, very good My room was a lower room at the back, but despite there being no views, it was lovely & cool given the heat wave and gave welcome relief from the very high temperatures at the time of my visit. I had a single room that very clean with a comfortable bed and really nice shower room, Breakfast was great a selection on cereals, fruit etc and a choice of cooked breakfast that was brought to your table. The dinner menu was limited, as I stayed Mon-Thu but there is an a la carte menu Thu-Sat. The walk into town takes just a few minutes and you can go via the castle grounds as the castle gate is literally just outside the door of the hotel. I really enjoyed my stay and intend to go back in the future, probably for a couple of nights again and use it as a base to explore the surrounding area as Launceston itself is limited really only having the castle, a church and the market square. Eating out in Launceston also appeared limited to a couple of pubs and a couple of Indian restaurants which was a real shame. However for me the Eagle House was a real bright spot. Thank you to Rebecca & her team for making me feel so welcome.

Reviews were very mixed and I had almost cancelled. My room was small but appeared recently refurbed.
Some public areas need some updating . Service was outstanding and everyone seemed to multi task seamlessly. The gin was fab and an added quirk.

Room was clean and comfortable, especially the bed.
The staff were friendly and helpful but seemed a little over stretched for the number of visitors, with one person seeming to have to do everything at one point from reception to waiting table. Had to wait a while in the restaurant but the food was very good when it eventually arrived and just the right portion size.

All the staff we met were brilliant. The girl in the bar in the evening was tops and our dinner was of good quality. The Gin was also good. We had room 10 with a lovely view while very nice I was disappointed by the lack of a shower [though I hadn't realised I could have asked for a shower when I booked]. Over all very good and would go again and recommend to our friends.

Lovely stay - only one night (unfortunately), one adult plus child, but will definitely go back.

Great old building (as long as you like old buildings that is!); room that was . . . er . . . roomy, as well as bright, characterful. Evening meal was really good - restaurant obviously popular with locals in the evening, and I don't want to generalise, but I suspect they know good meat and fish when they taste it.

But the main plus was the staff - I think we met four properly, including one whom I suspect was the owner, and they all seemed determined to ensure that our room, our food, our stay, were a really enjoyable experience.

I arrived at Launceston with nowhere to stay at about 8pm and discovered the Eagle online and immediately booked in. When I arrived there was nobody around so I rang the number but again nobody answered. I ended up going into the restaurant/bar and asking if I could check in. The lady was lovely who checked me in and really informative about the local area and helped me with directions for the morning etc.
The room I arrived at was beautifully clean but it did feel like nobody had stayed there for a while the bed sheets were so cold they almost felt a little damp and the room was generally quite chilly. Still I had a pleasant nights sleep and the bed was really comfortable. Unfortunately the bed was next to the window as the room was quite small and it was double glazed so it was a little noisy when cars were on the road this morning. Overall though I would stay here again.

Fantastic mid-journey stopover

The building is in an elevated position in Launceston and is beautiful! Inside, the hotel appears to be in a process of being improved. My room was not one which has had a makeover. The bed was excellent and there were ample tea and coffee facilities, but there was no hairdryer and the bathroom suite was several decades old. Breakfast was cooked to order and perfect for me. The staff are a real credit to the hotel and all were courteous, friendly and welcoming. The price I paid for my room was, in my opinion, great value and I would certainly stay again and would recommend to other travellers. This was a mid-journey stop over, but I would now quite like to stay here and explore Launceston and the surrounding area further!

A lovely stay in an historic building

We had a lovely stay. The building is very old, and externally beautiful. It has a modern bar and lovely outside seating space. The gin distillery was a surprise, and the product was delicious. The entrance and hallways are in need of some redecoration. We had a superior room, which was spacious, with a large bed and wonderful view. The en-suite was old fashioned, but everything was spotlessly clean. This is a great hotel for people who want to break away from the mundane chain hotels. The staff are super and the food, although restricted to a small menu choice due to Covid related problems, was tasty. Launceston is a little gem of a town, so worth a visit.
