The staff are welcoming and helpful. The building has a comfortable old-world feel. Meals are well cooked, and delicious. We had trouble with a leaking basin in one room but it got sorted within the evening.
It still felt a little of the same as when I went here over 65 years ago !

We booked this hotel for one night, as we had a friend's party near by. The hotel is stunning from the outside and is easily walkable to the whole town, although we arrived late saturday and most things were closed on sunday.
The room was very nice and big, however we were close to the area a wedding party was being held so it was noisy until 1am. The room was too warm so the windows had to be left open, there was no air conditioning, a fan was provided but this was too loud to sleep with, when switched on. Unfortunately our room was also facing the front of the hotel so we were woken up by people revving their cars on the main road.
The breakfast provided was very good
Overall a nice hotel, however I wouldn't stay again in summer due to the noise

This hotel and its staff were excellent. Since booking my health wasn’t so good but they accommodated us and changed our room to suit.
They were helpful and professional and friendly. Efficient.

Lovely classic Hotel, lots of creaking floorboards, & I’m sure steeped in History.
Staff were amazing, very professional & helpful. Food was good although fancied that second slice of bacon, sausage & egg at breakfast.
Room was clean, comfortable. Portable A/C struggled to cool room temperature but not a major issue.
I would stay again, so thank you Bedford.

Avoid ground floor rooms

Rooms on the bottom floor are the worse in the hotel.
Lots of noise from rooms above and rooms at the sides.
Stayed a few times and I won’t be staying again.
The menu is too fancy and expensive.

Great place for a stay near Dartmoor

We recently stayed a few nights at the Bedford. Right in the centre of town, with its own car park. (Hotel guests pay £8 a day but bar & restaurant guests seem to pay nothing.) Very enjoyable. Only a short drive from Dartmoor. Two National Trust properties within reach. A few plusses and minuses, as with most places. The staff were great. Housekeeping did a great job, the waiting & kitchen staff were very helpful. The bar seemed to be busy all day, with locals having teas & coffees morning & afternoon. Not a problem for guests as there's a large separate guest lounge round the corner. Bar staff were happy to take drinks orders & deliver to the lounge. The restaurant was very good but food fairly expensive and a bit 'fussy' for our liking. Our room was warm & comfortable. Some noise from early deliveries but we needed to be up early so it probably helped! My wife found the pillows too firm but we didn't bother asking if they had alternatives. (Too tired!)

The room was nice, clean and spacious, however seemed rather pricey £160, compared with similar places. Felt car parking at an extra £8 for 24 hrs was quite cheeky. Breakfast was lovely, full English, various options, even kedgeree.

Great hotel, Great location

I stayed overnight and met with friends so my experience was only related to the bedroom and the following mornings breakfast. Staff are incredibly friendly and very welcoming and the room was spotlessly clean and incredibly comfortable. Was very tasty and well cooked and the service was prompt and delivered with a smile. Hopefully I will be back.

Ground floor room was close to car park which did cause some noise which disturbed us night and morning

Loved the hotel, its facilities and the staff.
Didn’t like having to pay £8 to park when anyone using the bar or restaurant could park for free. It felt like a rip off. Didn’t like the rubbish WiFi.
The breakfast was okay but nothing special. Ive had a lot better for a lot less money.

Driven past this hotel countless times & always thought that it looked like a lovely, well presented building. Thankfully thanks to Hotels.com I eventually stayed there last night & it didn’t disappoint.
Everything was pretty much what I expected , couldn’t really fault it, except maybe for the £8.00 daily parking charge, I personally don’t think that residents should be charged this.

Tasty breakfast and a nice late time to check out by. I was able to park my car in their car park and see my car from the room. Thank you for a great stay!

Good traditional hotel in convenient location

This hotel is in a very convenient central location in Tavistock. It’s a short walk to shops and restaurants and pubs, and it has its own parking, so what is not to like?
Inside, it is traditional, but clean and tidy, with a decent restaurant and bar. my room was warm and comfortable, if a little bit small. But I would go back there again if visiting Tavistock. Staff were all friendly and helpful.

As a regular visitor to the Bedford hotel I was very unimpressed when they billed me £8.00 to park my car overnight at the hotel. Just because I booked the room through a third party. If I had booked direct there is no charge apparently. This will cost the hotel money in my opinion. Although only £8.00 its the principal. They are happy to promote themselves through third party websites but then charge the customer for that. I won’t be stopping there again. That £8.00 charge has just cost them approximately £1000.00 per year. Not good business.

We had a lovely time and would stay again. The only problem was when the jacuzzi went wrong and we had no instructions, which would have been useful. Otherwise, no complaints. Staff were friendly and accommodating. The room was clean.
The most comfortable bed I have ever slept in.

We did not enjoy our stay here, the room was very expensive for what it was, and we did not find it comfortable. The bathroom was old-fashioned and the towels were worn and off-white.
The food was not great at dinner although the breakfast was excellent.
We paid for parking which seemed a bit excessive in consideration of the high cost of the room.
It could do with a refurb.

This is a lovely hotel with comfortable rooms and a really good breakfast. The friend I was travelling with has celiacs but there was gluten free cornflakes and bread available so she didn’t miss out, the veggie breakfast was good too.
Having learned it’s dog friendly we will be back with our hounds.

The Bedford Hotel was a charming hotel, full of character and warm, welcoming staff. My only concern was hearing the floors creaking in the room above ours when the guests came in and I was trying to get to sleep - and although they turned out to be quiet, if they were less so, it might have become irritating if they had not been.

Great town hotel; upgraded to a large king bed instead of a single room which was booked which was very quiet even with a 18 year old party downstairs. Lots of sockets to do some work from, only needs a couple of USB sockets and maybe a bit of work in the bathrooms and this hotel would be pretty much perfect!

It looks a lovely hotel with lots of history. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The hotel was clean. I understand this is a old hotel but it was a very small room and looking tired.
The breakfast was of average standard.
The rating I have given is reflected by the price which at £149 for 1 night is over priced for what I feel was not worth the money.

The staff at the Bedford is exceptional. Every person was kind and helpful. The hotel has multiple places to sit and enjoy the atmosphere for a drink or time with a good book and the food was outstanding. There is no lift so be prepared to walk up some stairs but the view was worth it!

Really good location in centre of Tavistock. Large car park and easy access.
Nice spacious rooms and friendly staff.
Although we didnt use restaurant it was very popular and would do if we visit again.
Breakfast was more than adequate.
Pleanty to see and do in the area.

Charming hotel full of character. We stayed in room 6 which overlooks the car park. It was quite small but still very nice and clean. The bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom was a nice size. The room was serviced daily and coffee etc. replaced if necessary. The only two issues we had were that the sheet on the bed seemed to be a bit small and didn’t stay tucked in at the top so moved about a lot at night and stepping into the bath for the shower was quite high so may have been difficult for some people. Breakfast was lovely, there was a nice selection on the buffet and also freshly cooked food too.

Too expensive for what you get

The staff were polite and pleasent enough.

Had room 16, standard but was below standard.
The room had no ventilation, stuffy and uncomfortable, had to run desk fan all day and night. Didnt have a clean feel to it, needs a decor update especially the carpet. The bed had itchy feel. The tiniest wallmounted tv (had a good laugh).

In the bathroom the waterflow was very weak, generally unpleasent.

The exterior is really nice and outside garden was pleasent.

Outside the room I guess they were trying to get a historic feel to it but didnt work, lose the red carpetting and better lighting, it will give a fresher feel. Breakfast was average, cooked breakfast didnt have enough beans and veggie seemed undercooked or microwaved

General feel was uncomfortable, disappointing interior and expensive

Very poor hotel

I booked this hotel for me and my wife as a treat as we live local and wanted a night away from the kids. Check in was good and the girl was very welcoming. I booked a double but we were put in a family room. The condition of the room was poor, run down and grout and silicone in the bathroom was black. Apart from the girl on check in, all of the other staff weren't very friendly or accommodating. Breakfast was poor, raw potatoes which weren't even sauteed. Nobody asked us how our food was? There was no fresh fruit as advertised and service was slow. When we checked out, we weren't asked how our stay was and the lady was not very friendly. Extremely disappointing. I would suggest staff need better training in hospitality. Rooms need some attention and the manager needs to manage the place properly. We will not be staying here again or recommending to friends.
