The Oratory place ( in Yelverton) was just perfect for us (3 adults, a child and a dog) it felt like a true home away from home in a new area in England that we decided to explore.
The Oratory was so clean, comfortable and perfectly situated as it is an incredible base for exploring Dartmoor National Park. There are 2 local pubs close by and we decided to try the Plume of Feathers (a 10min walk) which had some very friendly pub workers (+ pub manager) and we had some delicious food and local drinks. There are more places to eat in different areas (like 30mins drive or so) around Dartmoor National Park like local cafes and restaurants. We heartily recommend the Oratory to anyone looking for the perfect Dartmoor getaway.

Comfortable, cosy, and beautifully decorated room with private bathroom, and its own access
Kitchenette (hot plate, microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge, freezer, crockery and cutlery, cafetiere) had all we needed to be self-catered while there

On the edge of Princetown with access to good walks on the moors

The Oratory is a quaint beautifully presented property ideal for easy access to the moors and all the excellent local walks. Princetown has two excellent pubs within easy walking distance of The Oratory serving good food. Highly recommend a stay here. I will be back

We had an absolutely brilliant stay in the Chapel. It is much bigger than it looks with gorgeous high ceilings so it feels very spacious. With a two year old and a large dog, it never felt cramped or like we were on top of each other. And the bathroom is HUGE! We felt incredibly welcomed and will be back without a doubt.

Loved the room. Really nicely decorated and great bathroom. Owner provided fresh bread, butter and jam (and a bottle of wine!) Very nice and friendly owners provided suggestions for dinner. Would have loved to stay longer.

This was a great place to stay and accommodating - they moved dishes and a hotplate in so I could do a little cooking and allowed me to drop off my luggage early. Very comfortable with a good selection of books about the area - including 2 different OS maps, which were very helpful. Within easy walking distance of all Princetown attractions and Dartmoor walks.

Pros and cons. Quirky place.

Lovely drive over Dartmoor but be aware that this isn’t in Yelverton as the ad says. It’s in Princetown. Not so accessible with buses at night so we had to drive.
Property was quirky and host greeted us with the WiFi code and left classical music on for our arrival. Enjoyed our stay.
Two negatives were the bathroom taps didn’t work properly. We were advised before we arrived but I have noticed that someone said the same last year and it hasn’t been addressed. The toilet doesn’t flush properly either and you have to jiggle the handle to get the flush to stop. I did report this back but didn’t receive a reply.
The kitchenette is a kettle and a fridge and a cupboard top oven in the living area. All this would be adequate but there are no washing up facilities. We were advised that because of restrictions on the property a sink can’t be installed in the main room. I think a washing up bowl maybe could be given and an indication of where to empty the water.
Lovely for a short stay with meals out. Wouldnt recommend for a family or a weeks stay though.

Generally very good. Bathroom taps didn’t work properly, but the owner did inform us. No shower gel/shampoo. No dog treats or bowls available. Bed very comfortable. Underfloor heating in bathroom brilliant.

Lovely a peaceful

Lovely quiet peaeful property, great that we could bring the dog too. Great access to the Moors. For some reason though I thought it was actually in Yelverton whihc was what we were wanting becasue my husband struggles with his breathing and hills, The Oratory was at the top of the village on a hill, we got round it by walking slowly :)

The host was lovely and left us alone, my only other comment, it would be good to have a washing up bowl somewhere for those that wish to leave everything clean.

Location is excellent if your interested in walking on the Moors. Parking is on the street ,but found a space no problem. Chapel room was clean and roomy. Lovely quality of bedding. Had a small problem with the hot water ,on two nights.and we felt cereal should of been offered with the continental breakfast. The owner, Jeanette,was friendly but didn't interfere with our privacy which we appreciated.

Warm, snug retreat in the heart of Dartmoor

Very cosy, charming accommodation, perfect for exploring the moors. We arrived quite late but Jeanette made sure that we had full instructions on how to let ourselves in. A bottle of wine and local handmade chocolates were waiting for us, and the room was equipped with maps and guide books for the local area, and board games which we really enjoyed. The bathroom was my personal favourite, the bath was exquisite and the underfloor heating was much appreciated after coming in from the freezing winds in the evening.

Two nights in 'The Chapel'

Stayed here for two nights to attend a friends wedding and double baptism. Owner contacted me by phone on day of arrival to say key was in a key safe near the front door, let yourself in, there is a bottle of local ale to welcome you. I was in the self contained 'Chapel' which was AMAZING! Very homely feel, clean, comfy and quite spacious. When I came to leave, met one of the owners who filled me in on why it was called 'The Chapel' and even helped me walk into town with my luggage. Would highly recommend this place to stay if looking for comfy peace and quiet on The Moor!

Spacious and comfortable

We stayed 4 nights in the Chapel Annex - it's a lovely big room split into a lower sitting/kitchenette area (microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge, all crockery, cutlery etc provided...but no sink) and a slightly raised mezzanine sleeping area with a wardrobe, chest of drawers, a sofa and a tv. The bathroom is large with a huge bath and separate shower. The Annex has its own entrance so it's all very private and comfortable. The hosts were extremely pleasant and helpful at all times. The rate given on the website wasn't actually for b&b but they can provide a basic breakfast at extra cost (including home made bread!). Princetown is a good base for exploring Dartmoor, and the Oratory is an excellent choice especially when the weather turns bad as it did during our stay! Would certainly stay again.

Spacious getaway.......

We had a brilliant welcome by the owner who showed us to the Chapel annex - a home within a home with lovely homely touches. Our daughter was invited to use the trampoline in the garden and make friends with the cats. A short walk down the hill in the evening took us to the Prince of Wales pub for dinner. We'd booked the room on s/c basis so travelled in to Tavistock for breakfast where we stumbled across 'The Kitchen' - you have to try the West Country breakfast and Hogs Pudding!! We had a great drive to and from The Oratory over the moors - fantastic scenery.

Comfy and cosy and the Chapel annexe, the Oratory.

A very warm welcome by the Oratory's pet cat, ( Midnight Ninja), and Chris. Room was clean, comfortable and well decorated. Room had all the amenities you could wish for:fridge,kettle and microwave, TV and hairdrer. Tea,coffee, biscuits, cereals and fresh milk provided. Maps and guides available. Info for places and pubs to eat and drink. Sofa and a sofa bed. Beautiful roll top bath in a large bathroom plus full size shower, good water supply. Under floor heating in the bathroom, toastie. Prince of Wales pub a short walk down the road provided lovely food, also very friendly. Beautiful starry night, saw my first shooting star. Well worth the money. Would definately stop there again.

Great place to stay on Dartmoor

We were spending a couple of nights here as it was close to a family wedding we were attending. The B&B ticked all the boxes for us. A large room on two levels (Chapel Annex) with fresh food in the room for breakfast. Large bathroom with bath and separate shower, TV and plenty of sitting space. Short walk to two pubs in the village with really good food.
OK, you twisted my arm, so I've to give a negative point. My only minus would be the steps up to the B&B. I've got dodgy knees and didn't find it too bad at all but if you're really bad on your feet, it would cause a problem. The proprietors are very good and if you have any issues, they will sort it out. Great place to stay if you're wanting to explore the moor.....far better than the establishment down the road (the nick).

The clean and spacious accommodation made it very comfortable for us. There was a very double bed, one single bed and one pull out bed as well as a sofa and a table with 4 chairs. The luxurious large bathroom, with a large window and heated flooring was very much appreciated by all members of the family. My son loved the free standing large bathtub. I loved the two heads shower. There was an all-around sense of space with the tall ceiling and 4 high windows.
There were many leaflets and maps of the local attractions and areas which was perfect as originally this was booked as a walking holiday to walk around the area and moors, however, due to an injury I was unable to walk and had to find alternative attractions. There is also a booklet with instructions though Sally was very pleasant and attentive and waited for our late arrival to explain the facilities. She also helped us in washing and drying dirty clothes and brought them back all clean and dry and folded!!. Additionally, she cleared and washed all the things from breakfast and dinner which made our stay so much more relaxing.
The facilities (microwave, kettle, cutlery, plates, mugs, etc., allowed us to have breakfast and dinner indoors, which helped greatly with my injured foot.
There are many books and games available in the room as well as the TV. We will definitely be coming back as soon as my foot heals to walk around the lovely and diverse areas of the moor.

Zeer warme ontvangst in een hele mooi, zeer ruime b&b. Ligt vooraan in Princetown (hartje Dartmoor NP). Koelkast, föhn, alles aanwezig. Heerlijke bedden. Aanrader!

Séjour de 2 nuits en famille - mai 2014

Séjour de 2 nuits en mai 2014 2 adultes et 2 enfants 13 ans et 11 ans.
Sally nous a accueilli très chaleureusement. La chambre est grande (env 40m²) et les literies excellentes.
Un radiateur d'appoint est à disposition pour les plus frileux. Les enfants ont dormi dans 2 lits séparés.
Un frigidaire est également à disposition et nous avons pris nos petits déjeuners dans la chambre. La salle de bain est grande et tout récemment rénovée avec soins. Le chauffage au sol, spécifique à cette pièce, est des plus agréable. Entrée indépendante. Endroit très calme.

Possibilité de diner avec les enfants dans 2 pubs à deux pas. Ambiance chaleureuse dans les deux pubs et prix très abordables, en particulier pour les demi-portions qui sont aussi volumineuses que des portions entières dans la plupart des restaurants!

Incontestablement une très bonne adresse pour loger en famille dans le Dartmoor.

Wir kamen sehr spät abends an und wurden von Sally sehr freundlich empfangen. In Bezug auf Service und Herzlichkeit gibt es nichts auszusetzen. In Bezug auf Sauberkeit der Betten und Qualität des Frühstücks sollte man aber nicht zu heikel sein.

Sehr großes, geräumiges Zimmer.

Sally hat uns sehr nett aufgenommen, das Zimmer ist sehr groß und geräumig. Es gab ein schönes großes Bad, wir konnten endlich mal warm und ausgiebig duschen. Es war alles da. Die Kinder wurden auch sehr herzlich empfangen und haben sich gleich wohlgefühlt.

Vacanza nel Dartmoor

E' un bed & breakfast situato nella cittadina di Princetown, un paese in mezzo alla brughiera del Dartmoor. La location è fantastica ed anche la quiete del posto. Non è un hotel 5 stelle, siamo in campagna e gli arredi sono molto spartani. Noi occupavamo una dependance con bagno che comunque era completa di frigo e attrezzatura per un te/caffè. Il rapporto qualità prezzo è comunque ottimo. Consigliato per soggiorni a contatto con la natura selvaggia del parco (punto di partenza per gite in bici/cavallo/a piedi). L'accoglienza di Sally è stata deliziosa.
