First night, we were first told there was no room for us. Then, after arguing with the staff, we we’re knowingly placed in a room with one bed, a strong foul odor and a water leak in the bathroom with an inch of water standing in the bathroom floor. It wasn’t until the 3rd night that they moved us out of the foul-smelling room into the room we paid for, which was a room with 2 beds. After that, our stay was fine, but not great. I will not stay here again. In the future, I’ll be looking for either hotels not run by Wyndham, or an Air BnB.

If you're looking for peace, tranquility, and a breathtaking view, this is the perfect place to stay. The scenery alone is worth the visit and truly steals the show. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and equipped with thoughtful amenities like an ironing board and hair dryer. The layout offers a cozy living room area separate from the bed, creating a welcoming space to relax. The décor blends a charming vintage feel with modern touches, giving the room plenty of character. Overall, the stunning views are what make this place unforgettable.

The best thing about this property is the view! Amazing view! No frills, but they price it right. Right on interstate 81, which makes it easy to get to Virginia Tech for a game when you can't find anything closer to Blacksburg. The people at the desk are very friendly and ready to help!

I booked and paid for a room for Friday evening, May 15th at the Howard Johnson Hotel & Conference Center in Salem Va. . When we arrived at the hotel approx 5:15pm the manager/owner would not release the room to me. He was the rudest person I have ever dealt with. He said I needed to call you at hotels.com to get you to release the funds, he absolutely said this was our responsibility. I did call your number at least 5 times and could not get a live person even though we waited on hold for at least 15 minutes. We did offer to pay directly, but he wanted his \"today\" rate which was over which was 3 times higher than the reservation rate. At that point we knew that we were getting scammed, classic case of bait and switch.! Needless to say, since it was Va Tech Graduation weekend, no other hotels in the area were booked solid, we had no other choice to return home. I am missing my granddaughter's graduation today. How absolutely horrible!!! I will never use Hotels.com again, and I would like my $$ returned.

My room itself was satisfactory and reasonably clean, but the overall property felt very run down. Several basic amenities were missing — there were no ice machines anywhere on the property. Another guest even approached us asking if we knew where she could find one because she needed to refrigerate her insulin. Her room did not have a refrigerator, even though the motel advertised that all rooms included one. We ended up giving her our refrigerator so she could safely store her medication, which should never be necessary at a motel.

The free breakfast was also disappointing: only boxed cereal, no yogurt or eggs, and the waffles tasted like cardboard.

The staff were courteous, but I was very uncomfortable when an employee offered to rent me a room “off the books” for $220 cash. It did not feel legitimate, and it made me nervous.

The room had maintenance issues as well. The toilet handle had to be held down for several seconds just to flush.

Another concern was that the back side of the property appeared to have long‑term residents living there, which made the environment feel less like a motel and more like a residential complex. This added to my discomfort.

Overall, while the room itself was acceptable, the condition of the property, lack of basic amenities, questionable staff behavior, and general atmosphere made the stay uncomfortable. I would not choose to stay here again.

This was one of the worst places we have ever stayed.
The room was filthy, and still had rubbish stuffed behind the locker from previous occupants.
Curtains were full of holes and didn't close fully.
Holes in the room door were filled with toilet paper.
Carpet was covered in stains.
The bed had only three tiny squares of material, about the thinkness of a towel, for pillows.
The fridge had broken shelves, and congealed milk (I think) pooled in the bottom.
The power outlet in the wash space had scorch marks.
The bath was full of stains, cracks and scratches.
The 'heater' in the bathroom didn't function fully on the the timer.
At breakfast, there was no coffee available. The only food out was one cereal option, and some stale waffles - some of which were mouldy. The fridge with milk in felt warm inside.
No staff were available at reception to raise any of these issues with.
The only icemaker we could find was broken.
We selected this place based on price, for a budget overnight stay while travelling. We weren't expecting luxury, but at least a basic level of cleanliness and function.

I'm sure this place was nice in it's prime, the location is beautiful, but the property is worn down now and needs a remodel, everything was done in the cheapest way possible from the 2-ply toilet paper, to the pipes squeaking the whole time the water came out in the shower, to the TVs only having a few channels with extreme static, to advertizing free breakfast only to go down there and there was none. Nor was there an attendant at the desk to ask about it. It was fine to crash for a night, but def should be in the price range of a motel 6 or super 8 bc the quality just wasnt there. Granted, we only paid $109 but it was more of a $50-60 experience.

I had already been 1 week before in this hotel to use it as a half -destination stop. The experience was very good. There were not many people at the hotel and there was no noise. They say in the hotel promotion they offer breakfast but it is very limited. It is more than a quick and go. Upon returning home I stopped to spend the night as a midpoint of destination. I chose the same room again. The front desk attendance that attended me was very kind. The room was clean again but noticed a strange smell but did not give importance. As at 9pm when I open the bathroom door I felt a smell of strong marijuana smoke that came out through the ventilation duct of the bathroom. I know the hotel has no control of that but thanks to the situation my stay was not the best as in the previous occasion.

There was dust on the top of the head boards of the beds and the rooms did not have a fresh, clean feel. Separately, breakfast is advertised as included, but all that was available was some defrosted frozen waffles, a couple of yogurts and a few overcooked sausages. This is a dump. In my 50+ years of traveling I’ve never stayed in an uglier place. Bed cover, sheet, and mattress pad all had cigarette burn holes in them - and I was a “non-smoking“ room. The furniture looked like it came from Goodwill. Two of the three drawers in the chest were broken and couldn’t be opened. Past roof leaks were scraped off and painted over - with a different shade of paint. And the worst part was the carpet. It was one big discontinuous stain. This place hasn’t been renovated in decades. Do yourself a favor and just sleep in your car if you can’t find any other place in your budget.

Technically, everything was functional, and it could still be worse, but other than the staff (who were very nice) it was still a very unpleasant experience. The first thing we noticed was that the room had a pungent musty smell reminiscent of body odor. The bathroom did not seem like it was cleaned at all. The room and the property in general were in a state of general disrepair. Furniture was very worn, towels had holes in them, tub has corrosion spots eating through the surface, the bottom of the tub was somehow squishy, and the plugs were falling out of the outlets (which is a fire hazard). Breakfast was barely there and was even more disappointing than a normal continental breakfast.

The hotel was absolutely horrible and the pictures of rooms and the property are not at all accurate. The room had a very strong smell of musty mildew and stale smoke. It was stated as non-smoking. The room had very old and dirty carpeting and wallpaper that was from the late 1970's partially peeling from the walls. The tub had multiple cigarette burns on the edge. The light fixture in the bathroom was missing a cover and what was there was rusted and flaking. The shower curtain was stained. The sink area had multiple holes that were patched in a haphazard manner. The only reason we did not run out of the room was that it was late at night and the beds were actually not terrible. Mattress was clean and sheets clean. The room overall was about $50 night worth and we paid 4x that. The breakfast buffet was horrible and there wasn't any food left but a few hard biscuits and some toast by 8am. Maybe this property updated a few rooms for the pictures or used some AI. We had a horrible experience

There is nothing to like about this property. Paid around $150 per night but got frogs and ants in the room, dirty carpets, worn-out power outlets with loose connections, non-working microwave, third-class breakfast, no coffee option in the room or after breakfast in the lobby. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

The breakfast food was terrible with very few options. The room only had a double bed and had a damp smell. Most of the outlets didn't work and the TV service was out. I ill never stay here again.

Do not stay here

The rooms were filthy and very dated. Lights broken in the room. Reservation made on hotels.com not honored nor was the price even when confirmation was shown to management. Would not recommend staying here at all.

STAY AWAY!! THIS PLACE IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST HOTEL I HAVE EVER STAYED AT. I ACCIDENTALLY GOT A SMOKING ROOM AND THEY WOULD NOT CHANGE IT UNLESS I PAID 55 bucks extra per night even though they had room. This place should be shut down, nothing worked in the room that was disgusting. I have a video, will try to post. STAY AWAY!!!!!
