I had the pleasure of staying with Hotel Encounter 4 separate times in 2 1/2 weeks, and it was a fantastic experience. The staff was excellent, the food was incredible, and the rooms are a nice safe-haven when you are so far from home. I am so appreciative. The General Manager Mr. Mukunda Pokharel will quickly find you a good transport to airport or wherever you want to go in Nepal. The rooms are big by American and Thai standards. Bathrooms are big and clean. Beds are excellent big and firm exactly as we like our beds to be. Staff are super safe, friendly, funny, considerate, cheerful, discreet, helpful, and can get you any service or tour or info you can possibly need. Two big quiet gardens away from exciting busy hustle and bustle of Thamel neighborhood. Rooms are very clean. Staircase is excellent, wide, beautiful, clean all marble stone for easy fast carrying luggage and running to your free breakfast in the garden. The city of Kathmandu is currently doing a lot of road work, construction, city plumbing, so most hotels in the area temporarily (less than 1 minute) have a short blast of black or grey concrete coming from sink tap, toilet, just a few seconds, so don’t panic, it’s just the city water main lines being worked on. Some hotels also have water towers or cisterns atop their roofs to ensure you have lots of water 24/7, so dusty water for a moment might be normal. Clean water eventually comes out, you’ll be OK. Drink bottled water and use that for brushing your teeth and washing your face, you will be OK. Looking forward to our next vacation in Nepal. The cities are glorious fun chaos and dusty good fun: adventure pure and simple. Do try to escape the city for the mountains! Aloha :) Namaste!

It was a lovely stay. I booked a standard room for one night. Upon check-in at the hotel, the administration upgraded it to a Deluxe room free of additional charges.

The in-house restaurent was wonderful. Food was great. Room service was fast and excellent.

I will definetly stay here next time I visit Kathmandu. Overall a wonderful experience. Highly recommended.

I stayed at this property for my first night in Kathmandu and couldn't have asked for better. I had arranged for their shuttle and the driver stayed even though my flight was delayed. The courtyard is beautiful and relaxing. The view from the room was great and the service from the staff was wonderful. I had had my baggage delayed and reception helped me sort it out.

Best location, Amazing service!!!

The location is excellent. Only one block away from the tourist area but quiet and also close to some convenience store.
The room was amazing. Large, extremely clean, cold A.C., hot water, large T.V. with many English channels, the Restaurant was also very good.
The best part of my experience was the service. The staff was always smiling and checking if everything was Okay and the manager very friendly and professional very concerned about by satisfaction.
Definitely I will return in my next trip Nepal in June.

Great place to stay in Kathmandu

Overall, great place to stay. Staff was friendly. Breakfast was good. Convenient location. Standard rooms are basic but serves the need. They can be noisy since they are close to the street, but this is expected since it is close to the city centre. If your are a light sleeper, then the deluxe rooms are recommended as they are quieter (not to mention nicer as well).

We stayed here before and after EBC. They kept bags safe for us while we were trekking, and before we left, they helped us ship excess clothes back to the US. We didn’t leave the hotel much (because it’s Kathmandu) but the hotel was in close proximity to shops and a bustling area. The food was good too. We enjoyed our stay very much.

The only downside of our trip was that the taxi the hotel arranged to take us to the airport swindled us for more money halfway to the airport. The hotel gave me a price, we were running close to being late, the driver took us halfway to the airport and then said he would only get us there on time if we paid more money. Otherwise, he would take us the long way to the airport.

Hotel location was good, close to bazaar but avoid the old wing as it is noisy and close to a busy street that starts very early in the day. The room is not very well kept and cleanliness can be improved. My Room AC did not work and they could not fix it. It is quite a let down as I paid extra for the upgrade to a higher room in the new wing. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful.

This is great hotel. This hotel has restaurant , spa and Travel desk where you can book almost any of your travel need The whole atmosphere is brilliant and all the staff members are extremely helpful and friendly. I would highly recommend this hotel for budget friendly stay.

Staff double locked himself inside our room

I would have rated this hotel high because of the location and the nice receptionists and waiters at the restaurant. However, a bad incident occured on our third day. We went down for breakfast and I forgot something so I returned to our room after a few minutes. I tried to enter it with my card key but couldn't because apparently it was double locked from the inside! I knocked and tried hard to use my card key several times but couldn't enter, and waited quietly outside. Finally, the housekeeping manager opened the door from the inside. WHY would he lock himself inside? He insisted he was fixing something inside but he did not have any tools, even then he should not have double locked it so nobody could enter. It took him a few minutes to open the room. I complained to the hotel manager and he said it was a \"misunderstanding\" between me and his staff. WHAT???
I also lost cash in the hotel on my first day of stay, and I leave it up to the readers to judge who could have been involved in it. The hotel manager, who said would do an investigation of the matter, was not helpful at all and tried to cover for his staff's deed. This unauthorized intrusion and the hotel manager's poor dealing with the matter are unacceptable.

Free airport pick-up; steps away from Thamel

Hotel is just down the road and across a busy road from Thamel. Set back from a smaller road--with a guard at the gate--and has a lovely garden. Desk staff is lovely; helped me sort out a smart phone charging problem I was having. Free airport pick-up definitely a huge plus and saves hassles on arrival. Fee for airport return trip is reasonable. The room i stayed in was quite basic but adequate with a comfy bed. I enjoyed my view to a school courtyard below and peek-a-boo view of the mountains (with Nepalis in their flats going about their daily routines directly opposite. Also interesting). I recommend this place as price is right, too!

Hidden Gem with Lush Garden and Fine Service

I am a returning guest of many years. I won't stay anywhere else in Kathmandu. I have been to Nepal 23 times and I choose to stay at the Encounter. The partner hotel Norbu Linka is under restoration which is another fine choice. Best masala tea in Nepal.

Hidden Gem in Kathmandu

Hotel Encounter is across the road from the busy Thamel area. It is centrally located and very easy to find. The atmosphere is tranquil and peaceful. The staff go above and beyond to help the guests. I will be back next week!

Comfortable and beautiful

Friendly and helpful staff, we were upgraded to a deluxe room, very nice with big windows. The only issue is the Bell right outside that rings from 4 am on. I recommend ear plugs. Also, you have to cross a busy, scary street to get to the center of Thamel. The restaurant area is beautiful and the food is delicious. There is a spa and travel agent on site. the best hotel for the price.

room description is WRONG

The listed description for the Standard room on Hotels.com is very WRONG. What is listed is the deluxe room description. The standard room is in the hostel wing, not the hotel. Arrived to find a tiny twin-bed, fan room with combo toilet/shower closet. Fine if I was going for a hostel, but not at all the described room.

Kudos to the hotel management who upgraded me to a deluxe room I thought I had based on the description.

The hotel room was small and bedding was ok. Washroom was unhygienic. Hotel charged for extra bedding and provided floor bedding. Overall disappointing experience and would not recommend. The positive things were polite staff and buffet breakfast.

Close to main shopping in Thamal

Excellent in all areas. Staff are so very attentive you feel a part of family. Always a smile to greet you and nothing is too much trouble to them.
Staff at grilled restarant and bar Bhim Tannang, Puttom Tannang and Portik the Manager of transport were outstanding also driver who drove us to Pokhara. The management took care of all details of our tours and allowed us a stress free stay. Overall for price and service you cannot go wrong.
We enjoyed every day.

Kathmandu suffers with regular powercuts which makes it very hard to sleep. The fan fails and the food is not fantastic. The staff are polite and the hotel is better than others. Appropriate location, nothing more and nothing less.

The constant powercuts are frustrating but out of hotel control. Padlocks on the doors are intimidating and the rooms aren't the cleanest, but head and shoulders above many of the other available options in Kathmandu. Location appropriate for transport and walking. Staff friendly but forgot to order a taxi; not quite a paradise in the dust.

Hotel for Service and Hospitality

Started off with a disappointment that the hotel could not send the promised pick-up taxi, but Ms. Suraksha made up for it by asking us to get a taxi for which the hotel would pay. When we reached the hotel we were well-received and promptly assigned the room on 2nd floor (as per our request).
The entire staff from receptionist, security, catering were all very courteous and helpful. So too was Mr. lama of the Travel Desk at the hotel.
The only weakness is the lack of a lift, especially if you are housed in the 4th floor.
Nice hotel, enjoyed the stay and would stay again if opportunity arises.

Stopped here for one night after staying in pokhara, hotel was fantastic for the price was expecting a lot less and a lot worse. It has every basic amenity you may need and hotel staff could not do enough for you ! Food was very good, great service. I plan to stay here again if I go back !!

Wonderful restaurant in a mad city.

Best aspect of the hotel was the exceptional food and staff. The restaurant boasts a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere. We were a family of five and stayed there twice over a couple of weeks. The rooms are average but represented reasonably good value for money. Not really much point in having an air conditioner because the power is constantly cut and wifi is also hard to obtain. Be careful of reception girls when they tally your bill...had the same girl try to sting me twice!!!! Ultimately I would recommend the restaurant over above the hotel. Look out for their grill/barbecue nights! Delish!!!

Positives: This hotel is clean and well-maintained, with a very nice restaurant. Negatives: The traffic noise in our street-facing room was unbearable. We couldn't sleep until we moved to a different room. Also, the travel manager is very pushy to sell his tours, so we had to go elsewhere to get reliable info.

The rooms are nice enough and clean. Sometimes there was no hot water in the shower but most of the time was fine. Staff are friendly, they are keen for you to use their vehicles to get around, although this is much more expensive than tourist bus or local transport. I would stay here again, close to main part of Thamel.

Friendly service, clean and close to Thamel

The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The changed money, got me a SIM card, recommended a good massage, and were always smiling and engaged. The room was clean, nice sunny windows, hot water. The restaurant was good. The internet was slow at times, but functional. The electricity goes off regularly in Kathmandu, but the hotel turns on their generator immediately. I will return to this hotel. The location is just outside the Thamel district, so it was quiet, but close to the action.

Very friendly efficient and responsive staff both in the hotel and the restaurant. Nice environment, and good quality of service, including helpful pickup from the airport. We had opted for a 'budget room' which although pleasant enough and represented good value for money, was noisier at night than we had expected. It would have proved a better experience had we upgraded to the deluxe rooms in the main building and which would have been quieter. Would definitely return to the Hotel Encounter on any subsequent trip to Katmandu.

Whilst I booked a basic room this would be great in the hot season, whilst the evenings were cold I did upgrade with a better room with a heater, because the nights can be cold. The restaurant offer a excellent meal. Staff are very helpful and friendly.

Staff are friendly and helpful. The room was average but provided basic necessities like heater, tv, clean bed. The room cleaned daily during our stay. No problems with the bed, pillow, and sheets - all clean and were bug-free. No toiletries nor hairdryer provided. The latter may be available when requested. Overall, we had a good stay at this place.

Great room for budget travelers

Upon arrival we actually upgraded for a small fee to the newly renovated tower. The room was great, the only downside was that there was an open air vent between our bathroom and our neighbors. Other than that the rooms were superb for budget conscious travelers. In terms of the grounds, they were beautiful and we're secluded from the madness of Thamel as it was set back slightly from the street (located ~3 min walk to Garden of dreams). The breakfast was awesome and the service was spectacular. Overall we would stay again. One more note: the hotel supposedly offers a shuttle pick up for the airport, but make sure in advance. That was questionable.

Overall my experience in this hotel was very good and enjoyed my stay in this hotel except for a dog below my window that barked whole night and every night! But nothing that the hotel can do about it I guess. Overall the hotel has a very nice ambience and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Service in the restaurant seemed slow but this was very common in all the restaurants in Nepal I visited. Things that could be improved - the balcony could be cleaned and well maintained. A toilet brush is also something I missed. The mattresses could have been more soft and comfy. The bath tub could be provided with a stopper to be used for its actual purpose.

The Hotels on the edge of Thamel, so is a bit noisy. However I had already being warned about that, so was not as bad as I expected. WIFi is a bit slow and buggy, but then I think the whole of Nepal is. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful.

The best hotel in Kathmandu !!!

Hotel Encounter Nepal is one of the best hotel i found around Thamel area as it is located just a minute walk to center Thamel. The best thing about this hotel is its staffs very friendly, attentive and welcoming. The rooms are nice, clean, hot water, free wifi, nearby to many shopping area and most importantly the ATM lounge is just nearby. I tried some foods at the restaurant which was named as Kathmandu Grill and it was amazing, so delicious and reasonable price as compared to other restaurant in Thamel. Overall it was nice staying at Hotel Encounter and would be coming here again for sure.

this has become my stay in kathmandu hotel. the staff are all professional and personable. everything from providing a car to the airport, or changing money before i leave the country is provided with friendliness and efficiency. i have stayed at this hotel 4 times now and will continue to do so. when i return to nepal, my wife will be at that hotel waiting for me, and the staff will pick me up from the airport. there are more expensive hotels, but none can outshine this one for service and friendliness at this price.

It's not what they claim to be

I paid US$36 inclusive tax for a budget / standard room for two nights. I paid almost the same price (US$40 for 2 nights, an example is ginger hotel in India) for a real three star rated hotel. The price of food is too much high which is very close to five star rated hotel like Pan Pacific, The Grand Roxy, Novotel, etc. but quality of food isn't as good as provided by those hotels. However, friendly attitude & behavior of it's staffs are very much appreciated.

Good location; friendly 'laid back' staff (perhaps too laid back at times) but everything runs to 'Nepali' time (two minutes means ten minutes/ five minutes means at least fifteen - but the hole country is like this and is part of it's charm if you're in no rush).
